As I travel through our vast country I am continually impressed with the abundance of living green infrastructure that we are fortunate enough to have in each of our communities. Every village, town and city is complimented in some way with parks, forests, gardens and beautifully landscaped areas. The value of this green infrastructure is measured not only by its beauty, but by the contribution it makes to cleaning the air we breathe, cooling our urban centers, controlling water run-off and flooding, providing shade, and acting as a source of building materials, as well as providing a natural habitat for birds and many other animals and insects.

The parks and landscape business that we are a part of is continuing to thrive and grow every year. Children learn some of the very basics of nature in the parks and natural environments in which we maintain. As these children become youth they participate in more active recreation on our trails, sportsfields and in our parks. As these same children become adults, they begin to have their own children and they come back to the very places they fi rst learned to run, skate, swim, bike and play. As seniors, the cycle of learning continues as they then come to our parks and green spaces with their grandchildren. Although we understand and appreciate the many attributes of our green infrastructure, we may not realize the tremendous amount of employment and money that is generated by the astounding number of professionals that care for our green infrastructure. In the 2009 “Impact of ornamental horticulture on Canada’s economy” report, Deloitte noted that the ornamental horticulture sector contributes $14.48 billion to Canada’s economy annually. In addition to generating a significant amount of income, this sector also has a substantial impact on employment across the country, with a direct sector employment level of 110,750 full-time equivalent positions. Add in the indirect employment generated by the sector and the number of jobs increases to 132,776. Then of course there are the seasonal staff that are employed each year, making the actual number of workers in this sector much higher.

The combination of all of these jobs results in 3.8 billion dollars being generated in employment income, with another 850 million in end user taxes across Canada. With over 10,000 landscape and horticulture companies operating in Ontario alone, you can now

begin to see the scope of influence and service that you, our green infrastructure professionals, are having on our communities.

start your saw, usually about 15 minutes in a warm dry place like a window sill is all it takes (refer to image 2).

In order to check and clean your air fi lter, you fi rst have to take off the top and/or back cover of the saw and another fastener must release to get the air fi lter off (refer to image 3). It is a good idea to clean the area around the fi lter with a brush before removing the air fi lter to ensure no debris falls into the carburetor once the air fi lter is removed. On older model saws, the application of the choke will serve to block debris from falling into the carburetor.

Have you struggled getting your saw started after a long cold winter?

Have you pulled and pulled on a starter cord so many times that you just wanted to chuck the thing?

If you answered yes to one or both of these questions, then your saw needs fi rst aid. This article is on the basics of starting a chain saw and how to make a hard starting saw an easy saw to start. Just like any fi rst aid course, we start with the ABC’s - Airway, Breathing and Circulation.

It has been said that a chain saw is an air pump. The reason for this is because it moves air more than anything else and every cubic centimeter of air has to pass through the chain saw engine’s air fi lter. An average chain saw engine size is about 50 cc’s with engines ranging in size from as small as 30 cc’s to 100 cc’s and over. The ‘cc’ stands for cubic centimeters, which is the volume of the engine head and every time the piston goes up and down, it draws in and expels cc’s of mostly air. On the compression stroke or upstroke, air is mixed in the carburetor with some fuel and oil. On the exhaust or down stroke, it expels exhaust out of the muffler.

Chain saw engines run at approximately 12,000 RPM, which means the crankshaft does 12,000 revolutions per minute and for every revolution of the crankshaft the piston does an upstroke and down stroke and the saw draws in and expels air on each stroke. If we use a 50 cc saw as an example to calculate how much air passes through the air fi lter every minute, all we need to do is multiply 50 cc by 12,000 RPM; which would mean that 600,000 cubic centimeters of air would go through the air fi lter of a 50 cc saw engine every minute. The air and fi lter represent the ‘A’ and ‘B’ of the ABC’s of chain saw fi rst aid. Be sure the airway is clear and unobstructed.

It is recommended to clean your air fi lter by simply removing it and washing in warm water with some dish soap (refer to image 1). It is important to keep the airway open and unobstructed. Your saw engine’s breathing will be good if the fi lter is clean. Give the fi lter time to dry before trying to

Next is the ‘C’ of the ABC’s. Circulation for the chain saw means fuel. Chain saw engines like high octane and they do not perform well with methanol or ethanol. Fuels with these additives should not be used in chain saws.

Ready to use fuel is now available for chain saws and is stabilized to allow for long term storage. This advanced high performance fuel does cost more, but is well worth the time saved in having a saw that starts easily and runs well. STIHL MotoMix® is an example of this ready to use fuel and eliminates the hassle of mixing your own 2-stroke engine fuel.

Chain saws that have been in storage a long time struggle to start and run because the fuel in the tank and/or fuel jug becomes stale when left sitting for too long. Your saws running and starting ability will be reduced after about 3 months of fuel sitting still and this only gets worse as more time passes.

To help your saw start and run better simply empty the saws fuel tank and re-fi ll with a fuel from a freshly mixed jug (refer to image 4). Follow the manufactures mixing ratio recommendations which is typically a 50:1 ratio of fuel to oil. The small convenient little containers of mix oil are made for adding to the 5 litre fuel jugs, but be sure the fuel you purchase is premium grade 89 octane or higher. One fi nal important point about fuels is that dyed or farm fuel is not good for chain saws, as the dye used to mark this fuel can react with the mix oil and result in engine damage.

Finally, top up the bar oil reservoir with bar and chain oil. This is the other cap on your saw and this oil reservoir needs to be fi lled every time the fuel tank is fi lled. The bar and chain oil don’t affect engine performance but they are required for overall saw performance. If you are fi nding the chain is stretching often and the bar is getting hot, then you are most likely running the saw with the bar and chain oil reservoir empty; and although the saw will run with this oil reservoir empty, it just won’t perform. The circulation of the chain around the bar is lubricated and facilitated by the bar oil. The ABC’s of chain saw fi rst aid are; ‘A and B’ clean the air fi lter and ’C’ put fresh mixed fuel in the tank. 90% of the time when this is done, the saw will fi re and run in just a few pulls.

Also, remember a cold saw needs to be choked. A cold saw is a chain saw that has not run in the past hour. Once the engine fi res, even if it only fi res briefly, turn the choke off before continuing to start. Otherwise, you will flood the engine and starting will be very difficult again, but now for other reasons.

So many times students and friends have brought me their saws because they can’t get them to start or run, and the fi rst thing I do is the ABC’s and ‘Voilà!’ the saw comes to life!

Consider having a drop-in time slot every week posted on your company web site. Say, Friday between 3-4 pm. Those who are eager will drop by, the duds won’t bother. Over-relying on the internet for recruitment is trouble. It’s just too easy for a young computer whizz to apply for 10 jobs in 20 minutes.

About the shiny part…we’re all attracted to bright shiny objects… they catch our eyes. But they distract us from looking at what’s really wrong with our operations and taking meaningful steps to improve. We might spend days looking at new equipment, getting pricing, budgeting, and relatively little time recruiting and training our staff. Equipment might be 10 or 20% of our budget, while direct labour is half.

Pay. Landscapers and grounds workers work hard. Really hard. Sure working outside’s nice and working in the green industry is nice, but we all know that can wear thin come July when it’s 30°C. Strive to pay more. Frank Stronach of Magna fame warns us in his book The Magna Man, if we can’t pay close to the average industrial wage, we’ll never succeed in business. Remember, if you can make your employees more productive with less waste and mistakes, you can pay them more per hour, which attracts better people…which leads us to…

IT’S STILL ABOUT Grounds, golf and landscape managers need good people running their equipment for good things to happen. Getting a responsible person on the end of a machine, doing a conscientious job, not causing damage, making you and your grounds or golf course look good, on budget. That’s the key. As managers we must strive to hire, train and retain good people. So it’s 2014, are you happy enough with the performance of your grounds staff last year? What are you doing to change?

Start at the beginning: recruiting. Look at your best 5 employees... where would you get them? Find out where/how, and go get more.

Referrals from existing employees, college programs, job fairs. They can all help. Maybe even offer a finder’s fee to employees, paid after 30 days of employment. Your employees care about their reputation at work, normally they won’t recommend duds.

Training, oh training…(full disclosure: I sell training!). Employees crave structure and a little guidance, and most of us as landscape industry employers don’t give them much. Remember the last time you started a new job? A little nervous, anxious and excited all at the same time. Well, your employees are no different. Start your employees out on the right foot with a simple but structured on-boarding and training plan. Make them feel welcome, invest a little time in them, then tell them how much you expect of them.

Turn your workers into professionals! This is what they want.

Those who recruit, hire and train well, will reap the rewards. It’s more important than choosing the right equipment.

Interviewing. Try an online questionnaire, something to get them talking and that requires a small commitment of time from the prospect, and narrows the field for you. In the Blink of an Eye

How much work or what can you accomplish in the blink of an eye? Next time you sit in conversation with someone, observe their eye. We all do it; the involuntary action of blinking. Our eyes need to be moistened for good eye health and vision. What, you say, does blinking have to do with technical issues? Consider this. An engine running at 10,000 RPM fires the spark plug 167 times per second. That’s right...per second. Think about that. Every second the spark plug fires, it lights and goes out 167 times. Honestly, my mind struggles to understand that. How can it go on and off 167 times per second? Let’s break it down a little bit. Remember your buddy that you’re chatting with and watching his eyes? Each blink is approximately 300-400 milliseconds or 1/3 of one second. So in the length of time it takes your buddy to blink, the spark plug fires, goes on and off 55 times. Incredible!

Not only does the spark plug fire 55 times each time your buddy blinks, but the cylinder of the engine fills with air, fuel and oil and empties 55 times each time your buddy blinks. Imagine, fill and empty the cylinder 55 times each time you blink. You begin to understand how difficult it is to control the air-fuel entering the engine and not let it escape out of the engine before it burns. Not only does the plug fire, the engine fills and empties 55 times each time you blink, but the piston comes to a complete stop 110 times in the same time frame. After it comes to a complete stop, it races to the top or bottom of its travel to another complete stop. Hmm…imagine the loads on the piston, bearings, crankshaft and internal engine components. Amazing, isn’t it!

With the engine running at these speeds, it is critical that clean, fresh fuel is always used so the engine can control the combustion process. For this reason, STIHL requires fuel with a minimum octane rating of 89. Your machine also needs high quality engine oil. The speeds and temperatures at which modern engines run in this industry demand a very high quality oil, specifically designed for 2-cycle air-cooled engines. STIHL markets a premium 2-cycle engine oil made from petroleum products, as well as, a fully synthetic engine oil. STIHL Ultra Oil is fully synthetic, biodegrades 80% in 21 days and offers lower emissions, less carbon, enhanced lubrication and the ability to lubricate at higher temperatures...maybe your engines are worth the little added investment given the fact that you want them to fire and burn the fuel and oil 55 times each time you blink! Remember air filter maintenance as well. I know Grandpa told you to clean it every day. Well Grandpa may not have been right, usually he is though. An air filter that has dirt on it, or filter cake, actually cleans the air more completely than a new or recently cleaned filter. Now be careful; ignoring the filter is not good either. Never clean filters with compressed air, this will shorten engine life.

Back to the bad thing that’s happening - major automakers predict they’ll have self-driving automobiles on the road by 2020.

Self-driving cars will be safe, law-abiding and probably more intelligent than you are.

I have about five levels of bosses I answer to at work at any given time. Plus, I have a 25-year-old daughter and if you’ve got daughters, you understand that at some point, you go from bossing them around to being bossed.
