Library

The library has been a hive of activity this term. The 5th-year library monitors volunteer their time during lunch to supervise the younger students, recommend titles and generally keep the library tidy. This year we saw the purchase of a selection of dyslexia-friendly titles which are proving very popular.

The monitors then turned to their more creative skills in decorating the library for Halloween and as we write are turning the room into a festive wonderland.

November saw the first of our book club quizzes based around “Skullduggery Pleasant”.The 1st and 2nd Years certainly threw themselves into the quiz with gusto-well done to the winning team of Daire, Marius and Harry. Thanks to Ms.Maguire for presenting the prizes.

December marked the return of author Denise Deegan with a series of creative writing workshops for all our 1st Years. As always this proved to be a most popular and useful event.

Remember we have a recommended reading list available on the school website - why not check it out for Christmas present ideas?

McRib treat at McDonald’s!

On October 25th, 2024, I joined a walking tour of Dublin with 20 fellow DCG students and three teachers to explore the architectural splendour of Georgian Dublin, from Merrion Square to the Dáil. Our guide, Dermot, offered fascinating historical insights, which made the tour engaging despite some minor inconveniences, like his speaker malfunctioning. I particularly enjoyed observing the evolution of Dublin’s architecture, such as the terraced Georgian houses with their narrowing windows to create a sense of height and high staircases to avoid street dirt. The visit to the National Museum of Ireland (Archaeology) afterwards, with highlights like the Ardagh Chalice, deepened my appreciation for Irish history. Overall, the trip gave me a new perspective on Dublin’s historical and architectural legacy, and it was an enjoyable and enriching experience from start to finish, including a McRib

Report on Sixth-Year Retreat in Glendalough

The sixth-year students recently attended a retreat in the serene surroundings of Glendalough, County Wicklow

The retreat is designed to foster self-awareness, self-reflection, and focus in preparation for the Leaving Certificate exams provided a valuable opportunity for students to step away from their daily routines and immerse themselves in a supportive and tranquil environment.

Students also had the chance to connect with their peers in a relaxed setting, strengthening friendships and building a sense of community as they prepare for their final months of school. The natural beauty of Glendalough, with its historic monastic sites and breathtaking landscapes, served as an inspiring backdrop, encouraging introspection and a renewed sense of focus. It was followed by a meditation that reflected on their journey to date through Saint Gerard’s.

First-Year Retreat

The first-year retreat, held in-house at St. Gerard’s and facilitated by the NET Ministries team, provided an engaging and meaningful experience for students. The program encouraged participants to explore their unique roles within the school community, the importance of self-awareness, and how their actions contribute to a greater sense of connection with others.

Through interactive activities, small-group discussions, and personal reflection, students were guided to appreciate their individuality while recognizing their shared responsibility in fostering a positive community The retreat was a valuable opportunity for the first years to build confidence, form deeper bonds with their peers, and develop a strong foundation for their journey in St. Gerard’s.

Third-Year Retreat

The third-year retreat also held in-house at St. Gerard’s and led by the NET Ministries team, offered students a much-needed opportunity to pause and reflect during the pivotal first year of state examinations. The program encouraged students to step back from academic pressures and focus on personal growth, resilience, and self-care. Guided discussions and reflective exercises helped participants gain perspective on balancing their studies with their well-being. Students left the retreat feeling more grounded and equipped to navigate the challenges of the Junior Certificate year. The day proved to be both refreshing and motivating, fostering a supportive atmosphere as third years prepared for the months ahead.

Lourdes

This year five Sixth Year students (Trudy Frater, Ordhan Hoey, Christopher Kelly, Katie Fenelon & Tara Carey) had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Dublin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes, accompanied by Ms. Cassidy. The journey began at the airport, where we met our fellow pilgrims and got a sense of the significance of this pilgrimage. We were particularly excited to meet the pilgrims themselves - individuals from all walks of life, many facing serious health challenges. On our first day, we underwent training on how to use the wheelchairs and “voitures” for the sick and elderly, who would rely on us to navigate the holy site. Our responsibilities included ward and stewarding duties; this meant cleaning the pilgrims’ rooms and spending quality time with them, where we not only formed meaningful relationships but also received valuable life advice.

Also add in the following photos

One of the most rewarding aspects was witnessing the resilience and gratitude of the pilgrims. Each time we assisted them, whether it was wheeling them to a service or sharing a meal we felt the immense impact of our support. Stewarding was particularly fulfilling, as we ensured that the pilgrims arrived at each event safely and comfortably, creating a sense of security and care. Wearing our blue shirts, we collaborated with other 6th Years, embodying the spirit of teamwork that made the experience memorable for everyone involved.

Throughout the pilgrimage, we bonded with students from different schools while engaging in evening prairies which fostered a sense of community among us. Although we faced challenges, like the heavy floods on our second day, our spirits remained high! The various Masses we attended brought so much joy to the sick and elderly and it was so heartwarming to witness how much it meant to them. It was amazing to be able to help them even in small ways, like sharing a laugh or simply holding their hand during a prayer.

On our final night, we celebrated with a lively party for the blue shirts, cherishing the fun we had together and the bonds we formed with each other as a group. This experience provided us with a deeper insight into the lives of others and the satisfaction of helping those in vulnerable positions. Reflecting on our trip there, the five of us are eager to return next year, but this time as white shirts, ready to continue making a difference and further supporting the wonderful pilgrims we met.

Debating

UCD Debates

This year, we are proud to have eight students participating in the UCD Junior Debates, the largest competition of its kind in Europe. What makes this year’s group particularly remarkable is the diversity in ages, showcasing a broad range of talent and ability. The team includes two First Years, two Second Years, and four Third Years, reflecting a strong depth of skill and enthusiasm. So far, we have completed one round of debates. Our talented competitors are:

● Rosamund Finnegan Quirke

Soroptimist Public Speaking Competition

On the 23rd of November, the regional round of the Soroptimist Public Speaking Competition was held at Loreto Bray. This prestigious competition, run by the Soroptimist organization for over 40 years, offers young women the opportunity to develop their ability to speak articulately, confidently, and with conviction before an audience. Representing St. Gerard’s School were three Fifth-Year students: Cathy Keogh, Choni Wong-Cotter, and myself.

In preparation for the competition, each participant selected a topic from a provided list and crafted a speech around their chosen theme. With the invaluable guidance of Ms McKean, we practised extensively, presenting our speeches to various audiences within the school to refine our delivery and build confidence.

On the day of the event, all three of us delivered speeches we were truly proud of. The presence and support of Ms. Gamiz, who kindly gave her time to cheer us on, added to the sense of encouragement and camaraderie. While the experience itself was incredibly rewarding, as it enhanced my confidence and public speaking skills—a valuable asset for life — I was honoured to be selected as the winner of the regional round. This achievement means I will advance to the national final in the new year, representing both Soroptimist Bray and St. Gerard’s School in the closing stage of the competition.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ms McKean for helping me with this transformative experience and look forward to representing the school atht enational level in the New Year!

Concern Debates

This year, we are continuing with the same team from last year for the Concern Debates. Their experience from the previous competition has been invaluable in tackling the challenges of online debating. The team - Amber O’Donohoe, Bethia Chapman, Charlie Geelon, Isabel McKeagney, Lucy Curran and Michael O’Cuinn - has already competed in two debates. They achieved a unanimous win in the first and are eagerly awaiting the results of the second. With one more debate to go before Christmas, confidence is high in this strong and capable team.

Junior Debating

Junior Debating has been in full swing since September, taking place every Friday morning in the library. Students from First and Second Year engage in lively debates on topics ranging from “Ireland should introduce the Death Penalty” to “School Uniforms should be banned.” Each week brings a fresh topic, providing a fantastic opportunity to express opinions and develop critical thinking on a wide range of issues. The debates will continue in the new year, and new members are always welcome to join.

Leinster Senior Debates - My First Experience

This year, I decided to start debating for the first time. It was an unusual step, as I am in Fifth Year, and most people begin debating in First, Second, or Third Year. Debating had always intrigued me, but I never seized the opportunity to try it. This year, however, I felt a strong urge to get involved. I decided to participate in the Leinster Senior Debates for the school, avoiding additional activities like Model United Nations because I felt I lacked the necessary experience.

My debating partner for the competition was Michéal O’Cuinn, and I couldn’t have asked for a better teammate. His support throughout the competition has been invaluable. Our first debate took place in October, as part of three preliminary rounds. Each debate featured multiple two-person teams competing in one room. We faced strong teams from schools like CBC Monkstown and Loreto St. Stephen’s Green.

With the guidance of Ms. McKean, Ms. Finane, and Ms. Flanagan, we prepared thoroughly. I was the first speaker, tasked with crafting a five-minute speech to clearly present our argument. The motion was “Incentivise fast fashion companies to adopt ethical production methods,” and we were on the proposition side. I delved into documentaries and other resources to fully understand the topic. On the evening of the debate, I was surprisingly calm and eager to speak passionately about a subject I had thoroughly researched.

Eight teams competed, but only the top two were announced as the best and second-best. Unfortunately, Michéal and I didn’t place in this round. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was motivated to improve for the next debate.

For our second debate, the format was the same but with different opponents: Muckross Park School, St. Andrew’s College and Terenure College. The motion was “This house would ban charities from using sensational, graphic, or overly emotional images of suffering in their advertising,” and we were on the opposition side. This time, I felt significantly more confident, having learned from my first debate. My delivery was more convincing, my points were clearer, and my rebuttals were sharper.

Michéal was, once again, incredibly supportive, offering tips and reviewing my speech. His performance was also outstanding. To our delight, we placed first in this round! I was thrilled—it was only my second debate, and the improvement was evident.

With one debate left in the preliminary rounds, we now have a strong chance of advancing further. While it’s early in the competition, our ultimate goal is to win it all. I’m incredibly grateful to Ms. McKean, Ms. Finane, and Ms. Flanagan for their invaluable guidance, as well as to Michéal and the other debaters in my year for their encouragement and support. This experience has been immensely rewarding, and I’m excited to see where it leads.

European Youth Parliament

Congratulations to Our European Youth Parliament Representatives

A big well done to the following students for representing St. Gerard’s at the European Youth Parliament in November at UCD and the Institute of Education:

● Harry Owens (Sixth Year)

● Jack Leahy (Fifth Year)

The students performed exceptionally well at the event, making the most of this fantastic opportunity to engage in highlevel discussions and debates. A heartfelt thanks to Ms. Gamiz for facilitating this valuable experience for the students.

Model United Nations - Royal Russell MUN

The Model United Nations (MUN) students have had an active and successful term, participating in several exciting conferences and achieving notable milestones.

In October, a small delegation of Fifth and Sixth Year students attended the prestigious 42nd Annual RRSIMUN Conference at the Royal Russell School in Croydon, London. Representing Kenya, Gus Dolan, Lilly Urell, Sarah Daniel and Matthew Burke showcased impressive diplomacy and debating skills. Special congratulations go to Gus Dolan (Sixth Year), who earned the coveted ‘Distinguished Delegate’ title in his committee for his exceptional contributions.

Meanwhile, Fourth and Fifth Year students embarked on their MUN journey by participating in local conferences. In October, they attended the MUN conference at Terenure College, where they began honing their public speaking, negotiation, and teamwork skills. This event provided a valuable introduction to global issues and collaborative debate with peers from other schools. In November, the students further developed their abilities at a second conference hosted by Rathdown School, growing in confidence and demonstrating leadership in discussions.

These experiences allowed the Fourth and Fifth Year participants not only to deepen their understanding of world affairs but also to build lasting friendships with fellow MUN delegates.

MUN is a student-led extracurricular activity, with regular meetings held every Thursday at lunchtime in G39. These sessions provide a supportive space for students to practice and refine their skills. It has been a productive and rewarding term for the MUN students, and they look forward to more opportunities to engage in meaningful global discussions and represent their countries.

First-Year Team Building Adventure at Hidden Valley Resort

In September our first-year students embarked on a fantastic bonding day at Hidden Valley Resort in Rathdrum, and we couldn’t be prouder of their energy, enthusiasm, and wonderful behaviour throughout the trip.

Blessed with beautiful weather, the students embraced an action-packed schedule that included the thrilling Aqua Park, kayaking on the serene waters, friendly rounds of mini golf, and the excitement of combat laser tag. It was a joy to see them stepping outside their comfort zones, cheering each other on, and creating new friendships along the way.

This day of adventure offered the perfect opportunity for students to connect outside the classroom, and their positivity and teamwork were a true testament to their character. For us, as staff, it was equally rewarding to witness their growth and share in the fun.

The memories made during this trip are sure to be cherished for years to come. Here’s to many more experiences like this as we continue our journey together!

Transition Year Students Visit Lullymore Heritage & Discovery Park

Transition Year students enjoyed an unforgettable day at Lullymore Heritage & Discovery Park, located just outside Clane in Co. Kildare. The trip took place on Tuesday, 12th November, on a cold but bright and sunny day, providing perfect weather conditions for a woodland ecology study.

Upon arrival, students and accompanying staff had a brief rest and refreshments before diving into the day’s activities. The group was divided into four smaller groups, each taking a short train ride to the woodland area. Each group was guided by a facilitator who led the ecology study.

The activities began with students sketching the woodland habitat. They learned techniques for capturing and identifying species and were taught how to use plant keys for identification. Each group successfully identified at least five different plants and animals within the habitat. Students also used specialized equipment to measure abiotic factors, including soil pH, air and soil temperature, soil moisture, and light intensity.

Following the study, students had the chance to explore the woodland trails on foot before returning to the main centre by train. A hot lunch was served in the spacious café, offering a warm and welcoming break. The day concluded with some free time in the playground, where students enjoyed activities such as crazy golf and zip wires.

The group returned to school by bus, arriving in time for after-school sports. The trip was a resounding success, combining hands-on learning with plenty of fun, leaving students with fond memories and valuable knowledge about

Leinster and Irish Representation

In a recent interprovincial tournament, Laura Keogh and Laura Carvalho (Third Year) represented Leinster U16s, while Eva Doyle (Fifth Year) played for Leinster U18s and Lily Moore (Sixth Year) represented Leinster South U18s. Both teams delivered impressive performances throughout the competition.

Leinster U16s

The U16s, led by Laura Keogh and Laura Carvalho, dominated their matches to top the table with 10 points. They opened with a commanding 6-1 victory over Connacht, followed by a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Munster. The team continued their strong form with a 2-1 win against Ulster and an emphatic 8-0 triumph over Leinster South, finishing the tournament unbeaten with three wins and one draw.

Bright Futures for Leinster’s Talent

Both the Leinster U16 and U18 teams showcased incredible talent, reflecting a promising future for women’s rugby in the province. With standout players like Laura Keogh, Laura Carvalho, Eva Doyle, and Lily Moore, Leinster’s youth teams are set for continued success.

Leinster U18s and Leinster South U18s

The U18s tournament saw mixed results for the teams. Eva Doyle and Lily Moore’s Leinster South team had a challenging campaign but showed resilience. They secured a narrow 1-0 win over Munster, fell 4-0 to Ulster, and ended on a high note with a 4-1 victory over Connacht, finishing third in their group.

The Leinster U18 team was dominant throughout, winning all but one of their matches. They recorded decisive victories over Connacht (6-0), Munster (4-1), and Ulster (40). In their final game against Leinster South, they secured a 3-0 win. Despite this loss, Leinster South’s earlier 4-1 victory over Connacht capped off their campaign on a strong note.

Senior 1

With four games played so far, the team has proven themselves a force to be reckoned with, securing three wins and just one loss. Sitting level on points with St. Andrews College at 9 points, they find themselves in a strong position ahead of the Christmas break. While the next phase of the season will bring a series of challenging fixtures, the team remains confident in their ability to perform at a high level and continue pushing up the league standings. The team kicked off their league campaign with an impressive 3-0 victory at home against Rathdown School on a rain-soaked day—an ideal way to start the season. Up next was a tough away trip to Holy Child Killiney, where they had struggled in previous years. However, this time they came through with a hard-fought 3-2 win, demonstrating resilience and skill in a closely contested match.

Their third fixture saw them host Loreto Kilkenny at home, a team known for their tough defense. It was a gritty contest, but the team stuck to their game plan and secured a narrow 1-0 win, thanks to a wellexecuted team effort.

The next challenge came in the form of an away game against Muckross Park, where they unfortunately fell short, losing 2-1. Despite the result, the team showed strong commitment and determination, keeping the pressure on throughout the match.

One of the most memorable moments of the season so far came in the first round of the cup, where the team secured a 1-0 away win against Muckross Park. In what was a thrilling encounter, they demonstrated excellent discipline and tactical awareness to overcome a very strong Muckross side. The win puts them through to the quarter-finals, and the team is now eagerly awaiting their next opponent. One of the biggest challenges the team faced came immediately after their league loss to Muckross Park. Less than a week later, they had to face the same team in the cup, this time on Muckross Park’s home turf. The way the squad bounced back from the league defeat to deliver such a disciplined and wellexecuted performance in the cup shows the team’s resilience and belief in their abilities.

The students have been training tirelessly for the next round of the cup, facing numerous challenges. Despite the harsh weather conditions and the added pressure of final exams, their determination never wavered. The highly anticipated final match took place on December 7th, just after a weather warning had passed, but the team was ready for the challenge. Juliette played exceptionally well, making impressive strikes on goal, but unfortunately, her efforts just missed. The match ended in a tense penalty shootout, reaching sudden death with a 3-3 score. Despite a valiant effort, we missed our final shot, and Wesley College scored to win. While the result was disappointing, the entire team showed incredible resilience and spirit throughout the match. We are incredibly proud of their performance, and we shift our focus to the upcoming league matches, confident that their hard work and dedication will carry them through to future success.

Senior 2

The Senior 2 hockey team has shown significant growth in both strength and character as the season has progressed, delivering impressive performances both individually and as a team. The team started with several preseason friendlies to build cohesion and sharpen skills. Notable results included a 1-0 victory against St. Andrew’s 2’s and a 1-1 draw away to Loreto Foxrock. Both games showcased the team’s determination and resilience.

League Matches Recap

● Rathdown School: 0-0 Draw

A match we dominated from start to finish but were unable to convert our chances into goals.

● The Kings Hospital: 2-1 Loss

After taking an early lead with a penalty corner goal from Lucy Curran, the team maintained control for much of the game. However, Kings Hospital mounted a strong comeback, scoring a late winner.

● Kilkenny College: 4-0 Loss

An away match against a formidable Kilkenny side proved to be a challenging but valuable learning experience. Despite the scoreline, the team performed well in the second half, gaining insights for future games.

● Newpark Comprehensive: 2-0 Win

A comprehensive victory and an outstanding team performance. The squad created numerous chances, hitting the post twice and being denied additional goals by an exceptional Newpark goalkeeper. Both goals were expertly scored by Amber O’Donohoe.

Team Dynamics

The squad comprises a well-balanced mix of players from Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Year, all dedicated to improving and bringing phenomenal energy and focus to both matches and training sessions. Training has emphasized developing individual skills, enhancing team play, and ensuring the process remains enjoyable and engaging.

Leadership

Captain Ellie Bourke (Sixth Year) has led the team with exemplary dedication, work ethic, and skill, setting a high standard for her teammates throughout the season. With continued hard work, commitment, and camaraderie, the Senior 2 team is set to achieve even greater success in the remainder of the season.

Senior 3

After a challenging start to the season, the Senior 3s have shown remarkable resilience and determination, bouncing back to claim the top spot in their league pool. Despite a tough 6-0 loss to Wesley College in their opening match, the team used the experience as motivation to fuel a remarkable turnaround.

In their next game, the squad responded with a commanding 4-1 victory over Kilkenny College, highlighted by a stunning goal from Ali that showcased the team’s attacking prowess and individual talent. Building on this momentum, the Senior 3s delivered another impressive performance with a 4-2 win over Loreto Bray, demonstrating excellent teamwork and strong defensive organization.

What makes the team’s success particularly noteworthy is how seamlessly they’ve blended players from Transition Year, Fifth Year, and Sixth Year into a cohesive and dynamic unit. The youthful energy and enthusiasm of the TY students, combined with the experience and leadership of the older players, have created a squad with exceptional balance and chemistry. This unity, both on and off the pitch, has been instrumental in their recent achievements and continued improvement.

Now sitting at the top of their pool, the Senior 3s face a series of challenging fixtures ahead. However, their recent form reflects a team with the talent, confidence, and determination to rise to the occasion. They’ve shown that hard work, resilience, and strong team spirit can turn setbacks into opportunities for growth and success. With their confidence building and their sights set on further league success, the Senior 3s are proving to be a formidable force—definitely a squad to watch as the season progresses.

Junior 1

The Juniors had a slow start to the season, with two losses and a draw in their first three practice matches as the team worked to integrate players from Third and Fourth Year. However, once the league began, the team found their rhythm, starting strong with back-to-back wins: a 2-1 victory against Newpark and a 1-0 triumph over Kilkenny.

In their next league game, the team delivered their best performance of the season so far, dominating the match but struggling to convert chances into goals, resulting in a narrow and undeserved 1-0 loss.

The first round of the cup saw the Juniors face St. Conleth’s, a team from a lower division. The difference in levels was evident, with Beth Shirwin putting on an incredible display by scoring five goals to secure a commanding win.

In their most recent outing, the Juniors faced Mount Anville in a hard-fought match. Despite an outstanding performance in goal by Charlotte O’Reilly, the team lost 1-0 to an exceptional strike that was impossible to stop.

Looking ahead to the new year, the team is keeping their focus firmly on the cup, eager to build on their progress and compete for success in the upcoming matches.

Junior 2 and 3

The Junior 2s and 3s have launched their hockey season with energy and determination. Transitioning from the familiarity of Minors to the fast-paced world of Juniors has been an exciting and growthfilled journey for the players.

The Junior 2s, supported by an extended squad and regular joint training sessions with the Junior 1s, have started the season strong. This collaboration has enhanced their skills and added depth to their play, leading to several impressive wins and solid draws, setting an encouraging tone for the months ahead.

The Junior 3s, on the other hand, have faced a challenging start to their league campaign. Despite a tough run of fixtures, the team has delivered thrilling performances, playing with determination and showcasing incredible resilience. Their unwavering spirit and refusal to give up have been standout qualities as they continue to improve with each match. Looking ahead, there is much to be excited about. Both squads are eager to regroup and come back even stronger after Christmas, ready to build on the hard work and promise they’ve shown so far this season!

Minor 1

The Minor A team started the season strong, earning draws against top-level opposition and feeling unlucky not to secure wins. As the season progressed, victories proved elusive, but the girls showed incredible perseverance, continuing to train hard and demonstrate their commitment to school hockey. Transitioning to Second Year hockey comes with an increase in intensity for both training and matches, and the team has risen to the challenge, showing great development as players throughout the first half of the season.

Minor 2

The Minor 2 team has shown encouraging progress despite facing tough opponents. Following a loss to Wesley at the start of the season, the team rebounded with a hard-fought draw and a strong overall performance where every player gave their all for the team. Their unity and dedication to one another are evident, and we’re excited to see this continue to grow for the rest of the season.

Minor 3

The Minor 3 team has made an impressive start to the season. A big win at home against Newbridge set the tone, followed by a well-earned draw with Sion Hill. One of the season’s highlights was a dramatic comeback draw against Kilkenny, where the team showed incredible determination to fight back under challenging circumstances and secure a crucial goal. This resilience makes them a formidable opponent for any team.

First Years

The future of St. Gerard’s girls’ hockey looks exceptionally bright. Over 40 First Year students have showcased outstanding athleticism, impressive hockey skills, a strong desire to learn, and exceptional sportsmanship. Coaches have found this group to be respectful, eager to help, and full of enthusiasm.

We’ve fielded four teams for the Leinster 8-a-side competition, with three teams currently on track for their respective semi-finals. A special shout-out goes to Bella O’Reilly for her fearless goalkeeping and to Taylor McGillycuddy, who has transitioned from defense to forward, scoring countless goals with ease.

The season began with a trip to Kilkenny College, where the only complaint was the noisy singing on the bus—a testament to the team’s fantastic spirit and camaraderie. Coaches in Kilkenny commented on the special bond evident on the pitch, a sentiment we wholeheartedly agree with.

A special mention also goes to the First Year One and First Year Three 11-a-side teams, who have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Leinster 8-a-side friendly league.

After Christmas, the games will transition to 11-a-side, a new format for most players. In preparation, our A and B squads recently played a friendly against Wesley College, with the A team winning 1-0 and the B team narrowly losing 1-0. The quick adaptation to the larger pitch and new tactics was a promising sign for the future.

Looking ahead, we plan to watch a high-level EYHL match, introduce indoor hockey, and of course, aim to bring home some silverware. With such a talented and dedicated group, the future of hockey at St. Gerard’s is incredibly exciting!

RUGBY

Senior Cup Team

The senior training squad kicked off preseason in August, preparing for three tough away matches in Belfast against Methodist College, Wallace High School, and Campbell College. These games were closely contested, with the squad facing powerful opposition, including several Ulster Schools representatives. St Gerard’s secured a win against Methody, while suffering narrow defeats in the other two fixtures. These matches provided invaluable experience for many players stepping up to senior rugby for the first time.

The focus then shifted to the highly competitive Leinster Schools League. The first match was an away fixture against Kilkenny College, a notoriously tough opponent at home. The team fought hard to earn a respectable draw, though there was a sense of missed opportunities. Next, St Gerard’s faced Presentation College Bray under the ‘Friday Night Lights’ at Greystones RFC, where they delivered a dominant performance to retain the O’Connor Cup. The next fixture was away against Gonzaga College, where St Gerard’s started strong, leading at halftime. However, a clinical second-half performance from Gonzaga College saw St Gerard’s fall short. The final fixture of the league phase, at home to Roscrea College, saw St Gerard’s dominate the first half, building a 22-0 lead. Unfortunately, an error-riddled second half saw them lose 36-29. Despite these setbacks, the league phase provided valuable lessons and growth for the team.

In the quarter finals, away to unbeaten league leaders Wesley College, St Gerard’s rose to the occasion with a stunning victory. Special mention goes to Jack McGovern, who recorded 19 tackles and was a standout performer. Zenon Chambers displayed remarkable composure, kicking the matchwinning penalty in the final minutes. This victory marked St Gerard’s qualification for the semi-finals for the first time since 2017. Although the team was defeated by threetime defending champions Gonzaga College in the semi-final, the match was closely contested, and the team’s improvement was evident. The experience boosted their confidence moving forward.

Special thanks go to the leadership of Turlough McCracken-Brown and Ellian Desmond for their guidance throughout the first half of the season. With qualification for the Leinster Schools Cup secured, the team is now preparing for the upcoming showpiece event, with friendly fixtures over the Christmas and New Year period.

Senior 2

The Senior 2 rugby team at St. Gerard’s School has enjoyed a season marked by significant growth, thrilling encounters, and memorable victories. This group, comprised of players ranging from 6th to 4th year, has demonstrated grit, adaptability, and a commitment to constant improvement.

The season began with a series of challenging fixtures against some of the strongest schools in Ulster: Campbell College, Methodist College Belfast (Methody College), and Wallace High School. These early games were designed to test the team against elite opposition. While results were mixed, the matches provided invaluable lessons. Facing such well-drilled sides forced the players to sharpen their defensive structures, improve their fitness levels, and build cohesion. It became clear that this squad had the resilience and potential to grow into a formidable force.

The team’s league journey began with an electrifying encounter against Kilkenny College, which was decided by a single point. The razor-thin victory showcased the team’s determination and mental toughness under pressure. Next came a home game against Presentation College Bray, where the Senior 2s built on their momentum with a strong performance, ultimately securing another hard-fought win. One of the standout moments of the season occurred in the clash with Roscrea College at home. The pack delivered a dominant display, culminating in a driving maul that resulted in a penalty try. This victory was a testament to the forwards’ power and precision, underlining the team’s ability to execute in critical moments.

Perhaps the most dramatic game of the season came away to Gonzaga College. Trailing 28-5 at halftime, many teams might have crumbled, but the Senior 2s displayed remarkable resilience and character. A storming second-half comeback resulted in a 33-all draw, a result that felt almost like a victory given the context. The match will be remembered for its intensity, skill, and sheer willpower as the team clawed their way back against one of Leinster’s top sides.

Having triumphed on our side of the league, the team progressed to face Wesley College, winners of the opposite draw. This matchup provided another opportunity to test themselves against high-quality opposition. The performance demonstrated their ongoing development and set the stage for the next phase of the season scoring 9 tries.

With the league behind them, the team now aims to refine their game further, with aspirations of breaking into the Senior Rugby squad. The competition within the group, spanning 6th to 4th years, has fostered a culture of ambition and accountability, as younger players push older ones to perform at their peak.

This season has been a story of growth, resilience, and teamwork. With continued focus and dedication, the Senior 2 team has the potential not just to achieve more success this year but also to leave a legacy for future squads to emulate. Their journey is far from over, and the whole school community eagerly anticipates what lies ahead for this talented group of players.

Senior 3

Well it’s been a busy first half of the term for our TY Students on the Rugby front, coming under the Senior 3 banner. Working with our Senior Head Coach Charl Malherbe, my job is to prepare & develop the Senior 3/TY boys for the Senior Rugby ahead of them in not only Transition Year but going into 5th & 6th Year in St Gerard’s. We work very closely with Senior 1 & 2 & have aligned with their calls & procedures in order to maintain high standards on & off the pitch.

We have had 10 matches up to this point with a squad of 38 young men !!! It takes a bit of organisation,to ensure that everyone gets some form of game time. As Coaches we cannot put anyone in harm’s way, Player Welfare is important, particularly with everyone developing at different stages, all still growing & constantly looking at different positions for them in matches as they develop. Constantly learning & improving, I identify players that for me can play at a higher level & after discussion with Charl we move them up to play Senior 2 & Senior 1 if they are ready, Physically & mentally.

We have a number of players that have played & trained with Senior 1 & 2, Adam Moore, Even Kenny, Nino Leddy, Noah O’ Neil, Harry Dunne & Matthew Breslin, these guys have shown that they are hungry & have the attributes to play at this level, which is fantastic for the group. There is great energy within this group of players & I look forward to continuing to see them playing in a St Gerard’s Jersey at as high a level as possible.

David Kirke

Junior Cup Team

The Junior Rugby squad began their season with a preseason camp at the University of Limerick, laying the groundwork for the challenges ahead. The team’s commitment to strength, skill development, and expansive rugby became evident early. Under the leadership of Simon Daniels, a standout figure in Limerick rugby, and Joseph Costigan, a seasoned member of last year’s JCT squad, the group set high standards on and off the pitch.

Preseason matches showcased potential and resilience. Against strong Northern Ireland schools, the team drew with Methody College and secured an impressive victory over Wallace High School. These performances hinted at a promising season, but defeats to Campbell College and Wesley College revealed areas for improvement.

The team rebounded strongly, earning consecutive wins over CUS and CBC Monkstown. These victories boosted confidence as they entered the Junior Leinster League. However, the league proved challenging, with narrow losses to Presentation Bray and Roscrea College. Despite these setbacks, younger players like Sam Hegarty, Shane O’Dowd, and Stephen Quinn stepped up, becoming consistent starters and contributing significantly to the team.

Now participating in the Father Godfrey Cup, the squad is determined to carve a path toward the Leinster Junior Cup. With their first-round opponent still to be confirmed, the players are focused and ready to face the challenges that lie ahead. The team’s blend of experienced leaders and emerging talent demonstrates their resilience and potential. Simon and Joseph’s leadership, paired with the energy of their younger teammates, positions the squad for future success. The season has been a testament to their determination, growth, and ambition as they continue their journey.

Billy Ngawini

Junior 2

As the season reaches its midpoint, the Junior 2nds squad has faced a challenging campaign, with only two wins to their name — against Roscrea and CUS. Despite their efforts, the team has struggled to convert hard work into victories in other matches.

The early part of the season saw some tough defeats against teams like Kilkenny College, Presentation Bray, and Gonzaga. However, the win against a strong Roscrea side, followed by another victory on home soil against CUS, highlighted the potential within the squad.

Frequent movement between the Junior 2nds and JCT squads has contributed to inconsistencies in team structure, making it harder for the squad to find its rhythm.

Nevertheless, standout performances from players like Sam Grant and Liam Lin have provided bright moments, boosting morale and keeping the team competitive.

While the season has been difficult, the squad remains optimistic. The players are using these experiences to build resilience and create a foundation for stronger performances as they look ahead to the remaining fixtures.

Billy Ngawini

U15 Rugby

Following a successful season last year, a number of 2nd Year players have progressed to JCT level, leaving a fantastic opportunity for the current group to step up and develop.

The season began quickly with challenging matches in early September against Wallace High School and Campbell College from Northern Ireland. Despite two losses, over 30 boys had the chance to showcase their potential, with encouraging performances.

Momentum built in the next block of games, with impressive wins over Blackrock College, St. Michael’s College, and Temple Carrig to close out September on a high note.

However, November brought its challenges. A tight squad was further tested by a high injury count, including several fractures, leading to losses against a strong CBC Cork, St. Andrew’s, and an improving CBC Monkstown. Both players

U15B Rugby

and coaches were disappointed, but the group showed incredible resolve, using this period to reflect and refocus. The group have resolve, we can say that now.

Six wins from eight matches tells a positive story, however it’s the manner of the performances and the style of play that is helping the feeling of continued growth and development. We play to win, we learn to lose, the cycle of improvement never stops.

Victories over CUS, King’s Hospital, Clongowes Wood, Wesley College, Temple Carrig, and a standout win against St. Mary’s demonstrated the group’s progress. Tough losses to strong Pres Bray and a physical Kilkenny College provided further learning opportunities.

For only half a season completed, it certainly has not been easy, and it certainly has also been rewarding. There’s no stopping now.

I’ve been a part of the U15 rugby this year at St Gerard’s and have been really enjoying coaching and growing the boys skill set while being in Ireland. Coming from New Zealand it has been good to share my experiences and style of play with the team.

I’ve been working with all players but am with the U15 B team on game day. The boys have had some tough results but have put together some good performances along the way so far this season, most notably against strong sides in Blackrock College, St Micheal’s College and CBC Cork.

Some moments that have stood out to me is the way the boys have come along from when I first arrived. Their work at the breakdown has improved a lot and is now a very strong part of their game allowing them to retain a lot of possession and then steal opposition ball at the breakdown. The boys have overcome some challenges this year. Firstly would be the breakdown, they are now a very dominant team in that aspect of the game. The handling of the group has also improved and is something that we keep working on each week.

The main skill we are working on is our tackle technique, being able to get into a good position to make a dominant tackle. This is our biggest work on and are improving each training session.

I am looking forward to where we can take this group and improve as a team together to get some good results to finish out the rest of the season.

Reeve Satherly

U14A Rugby

As the boys returned to school in September there was great excitement and enthusiasm for the season ahead.

After only one weeks training behind us our games program began with games against Wallace High School and Campbell College. Unfortunately both these games resulted in heavy defeats but provided valuable insights for both players and coaches as to the areas of our game that we had to improve on.

As the hard work on the training ground continued results began to improve with a very good 21-10 defeat of St Michael’s followed up by a narrow defeat away to Clongows Wood College.

As we moved into October the team’s performance continued to improve resulting in a 14-14 draw with St Mary’s and an excellent 29-12 win away to Newbridge College, a notoriously difficult place to go and win! There then followed a narrow defeat away to Terenure 7-12 before finishing out the month with a 50-7 victory over St Andrew’s, a game in which we managed to give A team experience to no more the 25 players!

November started with disappointing losses to both CBC Monkstown and St Mary’s. We then had the first of the Leinster Branch Blitz’s where we were placed in one of the Division A groups along with Terenure, St Mary’s and Wesley College recording a win, a draw and a narrow loss while playing some excellent rugby.

As November progressed we saw further improvement in the team’s style of play and results with a resounding 38-12 win over local rivals Pres Bray followed by a really impressive 24-0 victory over Willow Park.

The team has faced a challenging start to the season, with tough matches against strong sides including St. Michael’s College, St. Mary’s College, Newbridge College, CBC Monkstown, and Willow Park Junior School. While these games didn’t go our way, they provided valuable experience.

The turning point came with a well-earned first win against Clongowes Wood College, which gave the players a boost in confidence. This was followed by a strong showing away to Terenure College, where the team narrowly lost by two points but showed clear signs of improvement and teamwork. Their progress was further evident in the match against Presentation College Bray, where they delivered a controlled performance, keeping the opposition scoreless and securing their second win of the season.

The team’s development over the first few months has been encouraging. If they maintain their current work rate and focus, there’s every reason to expect further improvements and successes as the season continues.

GOLF

Our senior and junior boys and girls golf teams have participated in Golf Ireland’s Leinster Regional Qualifiers. The senior boys and girls teams teed off at Old Conna Golf Club in September. With only the top two to go through, the boys fell short of qualifying for the All-Ireland Championships, Daisy Jolly however, secured her place by finishing second in the senior girls category. This outstanding achievement will see her compete at the prestigious All-Ireland Championships in Milltown Golf Club next April.

The junior teams played their qualifier in Bray Golf Club in October. Unfortunately, the junior boys missed out on qualification spaces. However, there was more success for the girls as Pippa Jolly also secured her spot in the All-Ireland Junior Championships in April.

Our extra-curricular golf coaching program has once again proven to be very popular. Over fourth six pupils from both junior and seniors took part in eight weeks of coaching at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club.

The program was fully booked throughout its duration, and provided comprehensive coaching on all aspects of the game. From the fundamentals of grip and stance to advanced techniques like chipping and putting, our young golfers received expert guidance from the three PGA professionals in the club. We will announce the plan to offer another eight-week program in the spring. Further details will be shared after the Christmas break.

We will also be announcing the date for our Parent and Child golf tournament which has been moved from autumn to the Spring.

SENIOR SOCCER

We had 6 returning players coming into the new season with many new faces added. Included in the team were two new students who play at a League of Ireland standard.

To date the team have played 5 games having won 4 and drawing the other. We have progressed to the 2nd round of the Senior Cup which we played late November.. Unfortunately, the game was abandoned after 35 minutes with a serious injury to our goalkeeper, Callum Dempsey. He will certainly be a massive loss to the squad, and we wish him a speedy recovery. Hopefully he will be able to join the squad on the side line in the New Year!

In the Senior Metropolitan league, we have only played one game to date against Presentation College Terenure, and came out on top by a score of 2-1. Plenty of more football ahead in the coming weeks and into the new year as the team go chasing the achievements of last year’s winning Cup side.

U16 BOYS BASKETBALL

Thats it I think Marina

Thanks

The Under-16 boys basketball team recently made an impressive debut in the school basketball leagues, marking a major milestone in their sporting journey. Led by captain Darragh Donnegan, the team reached the quarterfinals in what was an outstanding display of skill, teamwork, and determination.

Throughout the season, the boys showed incredible growth and improvement in their basketball abilities, and their dedication was evident on the court. A special mention goes to the team’s top scorers: Darragh Donnegan, Ethan Brooksbank Piercy, and Yanbo Chen, whose performances were instrumental to the team’s success.

Despite the challenges they faced, the Under-16 team’s performance this year serves as a testament to their hard work and perseverance. With a young and talented squad, we are excited to see what next season will bring, as many players will be eligible to compete again in this age group. The future looks bright for these young athletes, and we have no doubt they will continue to make us proud.

As the season progresses, the Under-15 girls’ team is hard at work training for their upcoming league competition, and our 1st-year boys team is also gearing up for their own challenges ahead. We look forward to supporting all of our athletes as they strive to reach new heights in their respective competitions.

The spirit of teamwork, growth, and dedication displayed by all our teams is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for these talented athletes!

SAILING

Our sailing team made a fantastic start to the season, winning the first round of the Shanahan Cup, School’s Team Racing event, which was hosted by the INSS in Dun Laoghaire harbour. The team consisted of a mix between our experienced and younger sailors, and it was amazing that they beat eight Leinster schools on the day. We look forward to more school events in the new year and of course hosting our own Inter-schools sailing regatta in May.
