Welcome to the third Great Yarmouth Arts Festival, a celebration of music, visual art, theatre, film, heritage and dance.

There is something here for everyone!

Interested in the local art scene? Great Yarmouth Minster will be hosting a combined exhibition of art by the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists, the Great Yarmouth Society of Artists, Guild of Artists and the Photographic Society. The Quill Group will also be displaying a selection of their poetry and writing. The 133 gallery on King Street will be screening films and Ernie Childs and his students will be exhibiting in the Library.

Have you visited St. George’s Theatre yet? It will be hosting a variety of performances including Bernard Shaw’s Man and Superman, a drama about Edith Cavell, a comedy evening with Patrick Monahan and an illustrated talk about Thomas Gainsborough and John Constable.

Come and marvel at the 'Mammoth Parade’ as a life size mammoth standing over 16 feet tall leads a procession of giant animal puppets, dancers, musicians and local schools and community groups across the town to kick start the festival. There is also a specially created puppet show, Neighbourhood Fair, art on the railings and bikes! The fun starts in the Market Place at 11am on Saturday, 6 June. Bring your family and friends and spread the word!

For music lovers we have La Boheme direct from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Carmina Burana, Gilbert and Sullivan, Harp, Harpsichord and Organ recitals, the Cavick String Quartet and an inaugural concert of a Youth Orchestra supported by choirs and ballet dancers as well as a Blondie tribute act.

Have a passion for film? Guy Myhill's acclaimed Norfolk drama 'The Goob' receives a special screening plus the documentary feature ‘Bhopal: a Prayer for Rain’ will have its first showing outside London with David Brooks, the co-author, present for questions and answers. Young film makers will also showcase their talents at the Junior Film Festival.

We will also be showing off Great Yarmouth’s wonderful heritage with special guided walks around the town.

A life size articulated mammoth standing over 16 feet tall, based on the largest mammoth ever found in West Runton, will lead a parade of giant animal puppets, dancers, musicians, acrobats, local school children and community groups across the town to kick start this years festival.

This exciting and special procession will begin at the Fishermen’s Hospital at 11am and will cross the Market Place on its way to St. George’s Theatre.

Great Yarmouth Market Place The Great Yarmouth Bike Project (GYBP) is a new community led cycling hub on Great Yarmouth Marine Parade (North Drive).

It offers families and individuals from all parts of the community an easily accessible opportunity to become physically active and to develop essential cycling, business and life skills. The GYBP is delivered by social enterprise ActivatingCIC on a not-for-profit basis.

This will be the first public performance by the Youth Orchestra established by John Stephens, Organist and Director of Music at the Minster. Also performing will be Dusmagrik Young People’s Theatre Company, Norwich Young Voices, Gresham’s Prep School Chapel Choir and dancers from the June Glennie School of Dance. There will be works by Elgar, Tchaikovsky, Vaughan Williams and others and Sam Aldersey-Williams will play the first movement of Greig’s Piano Concerto in A Minor Op. 16. A concert not to be missed.

St. Andrew’s Church, Gorleston Tickets: £8; Under 12’s Free Jason Lambert will conduct Hannah Long, Trevor Burton and Patrick Monk together with a chorus of twenty five singers performing extracts from many of Gilbert and Sullivan’s well known operas.

St. George’s Theatre Tickets: £4 A great selection of pieces by Mark Moorhouse who was born and educated in North Norfolk. After studying modern and medieval languages and playing the organ in Cambridge he taught English in Europe prior to taking up the harpsichord.

He will be playing works by Bach, Scarlatti, Frescobaldi and Sweelinck.

The Cavick Quartet was formed in 2009 and makes a welcome return to the Festival.

Ben Lowe, Anne Vallins, Ben Payne and Chris Lawrence are leading string players in Norfolk who have a passion for playing chamber music. Among the works being played will be Mendelssohn Op 13 A minor, Haydn Op 76 no 2 “The Fifths” and Frank Bridge’s an Irish Melody for string quartet “The Londonderry Air”.

Great Yarmouth Minster Tickets: £12 in advance and £14 at the door We are delighted to welcome back the Pakefield Singers, an amateur community concert choir based in Lowestoft, which performs across the Waveney area of Suffolk.

The Pakefield Singers will be joined by other local singers to form this massed choir, “Fortuna Voices”, with a choir of boys from Saint Felix School. Local professional and semi-professional singers will be the soloists, led by international baritone Njabulo Madlala.

Vetta Wise, Director of Music since the choir’s inception twelve years ago, is well known in the UK and overseas as an inspirational choir trainer, conductor and voice coach.

VISUAL ARTS GREAT YARMOUTH GUILD OF ARTISTS AND CRAFTSMEN The Great Yarmouth Guild of Artists and Craftsmen is a group of over eighty artistically talented individuals who paint and craft in a variety of media. The Guild promotes art in many varied forms and The Annual Exhibition is a showcase of the eclectic mix of the artis’ works and abilities.

Throughout the year the Guild exhibits and sells its works in the Victoria Arcade.

EAST ANGLIAN GROUP OF MARINE ARTISTS

GREAT YARMOUTH AND DISTRICT SOCIETY OF ARTISTS

The East Anglian Group Of Marine Artists (EAGMA) was formed in 1979 by six founder members at Pin Mill on the river Orwell, all inspired by a shared enthusiasm for depicting the maritime scene. Today, over 35 years later, the group has 25 well known and highly regarded artists with a leaning towards East Coast subject matter. The group has exhibited at The Mall Galleries, London and regularly exhibits at renowned galleries throughout East Anglia.

The Society was formed in 1927 to bring art to the people of Great Yarmouth and to provide a good standard of work so that the people of the town would see high quality artworks.

The Society is justly proud of its history and its past members include: Sir John Arnesby Brown R.A. who was knighted for his contribution to the nation’s art, Campbell Mellon R.O.I. who exhibited over fifty works at the Royal Academy and Rowland Fisher RSMA. R.O.I., a landscape and Marine Artist.

GREAT YARMOUTH AND DISTRICT PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY Founded in 1948, the group has around 30 members, meeting every Wednesday evening in Bradwell Community Centre from September to April and outside at photofriendly venues in the summer.

Although the majority of members are using digital photography others use film in a variety of formats. New members are welcome whatever their interests or level of expertise.

QUILL WRITING GROUP Quill was founded in 1999. It meets each month to share poetry and prose. This is the third Art Festival Quill has been invited to write for and are proud to see their work exhibited at Great Yarmouth Minster. This year they are writing about Prehistoric times and especially the Mammoth to complement the Carnival theme.

MAN AND SUPERMAN Tickets: £10 Bernard Shaw’s witty and provocative classic starring Ralph Fiennes as Jack Tanner is screened from the National Theatre during a live performance. In it there is the dream debate about heaven and hell. The romantic comedy raises fundamental philosophical questions about how we live.

Tickets: £5 Mark Mitchels MA taught English and History at Woodbridge School, Suffolk and subsequently was appointed Head of Cultural Studies. He is a successful author, photographer and a superb lecturer on a wide range of subjects covering Elizabethan Theatre, Dickens, Mozart and many aspects of East Anglia. This lecture compares and contrasts the lives of Gainsborough and Constable and is lavishly illustrated by their paintings.

In 2014 five bursaries were awarded to four schools in the borough by English Heritage to help them work with local film makers on projects relating to their built heritage or to commemorate the First World war.

The James Paget Interactive Exhibition

James Paget was born in Great Yarmouth on 11 January 1814 and went on to become surgeon to Queen Victoria and the leading surgeon of his time. Although born to wealthy parents by the time he was aged twelve his father’s businesses were failing and he suffered severe poverty for more than the next two decades. In order to celebrate and raise the profile of this great man, Cliff Park Ormiston Academy and Ormiston Venture Academy are designing their own interactive exhibition about James Paget and what life was like in Great Yarmouth in Victorian Times.

The exhibition will be displayed with a film made by Southtown Primary School at the following venues:

HOW DO YOU GET HERE? RAILWAY Trains terminate at Vauxhall station which is 7 minutes’ walk from Town Centre.

Buses and coaches provide a good service to the town centre.

CAR Cars from the south or north approach Great Yarmouth along the A12.

Those coming from the west travel along the A47.

BUS Buses run regularly to Great Yarmouth Town Centre and stop at Great Yarmouth Market Gates (Bus Station).

BOAT Boats from the Broads or further afield can approach Great Yarmouth via the rivers Bure, Yare or Waveney. Those coming from the North Sea travel up the river Yare.
