Apprenticeships

20230306-What You Need To Know Apprenticeships Leaflet.pdf

With Scottish apprenticeship week approaching, I thought I would send out an information leaflet about the 20+ apprenticeships that the RAF has to offer. Our apprenticeships are consistently awarded nationally.

 The UK’s top major apprenticeship employer - Macro Employer of the Year in the 2017 National Apprenticeship Awards and Ofsted Outstanding Training Provider.

 4th place in the 2022 Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers Award.

Our website has information if a particular qualification is needed for a specific role and if it is indeed open for recruiting. The website is the best point of call for that as it’s always up to date. https://recruitment.raf.mod.uk/

Hollie joined Deloitte aged 18 after finishing her A-Levels at St Patrick’s College in Bambridge.

She said: “I knew that I wanted to work in business and did a lot of research into different professional services companies. All my friends were applying for university, but I didn’t want to solely focus on studying the theory of business – I wanted to be in the room where it happens!”

She attended Careers Shapers – Deloitte’s work experience programme for year 10, 11 and 12 students – when she was 17, and decided on a career at the firm after learning about the interesting work they do.

She added: “People have the misconception that you miss out on the university experience if you choose an apprenticeship. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything!”

“I had a career highlight recently when I was presenting to a client with my team. I felt so proud of myself for having responsibility so early in my career, and I can feel my confidence and knowledge growing with every project.”

You’ll deliver outstanding quality services by completing research, administrative and project management tasks. You’ll be working on Deloittes largest and most influential clients while working towards a professional qualification. Available in the company's Newcastle and Cardiff offices.

Summer Journalism Academy

As we begin a new year, it's time to start thinking about what your students will do this summer. If you have a student interested in a career in journalism, writing, communications, or photography, encourage them to apply for the Boston University Summer Journalism Academy, hosted by Boston University College of Communication.

For 14 years, our program has trained high schoolers critical skills in news reporting, interviewing, and writing. Our courses are taught by awardwinning, working journalists, including Pulitzer Prize winners Lara Salahi and Rochelle Sharpe . Students interested in visual storytelling will learn from veteran photojournalist and The Boston Globe photographer Stephen Haines. Regardless of which program students choose, we challenge them to step outside their comfort zone and experience life as a working journalist.

We offer three courses:

 An on-campus residential program from June 24 to July 12, 2024 (for students with some journalism experience)

Page | 39

 An on-campus photojournalism program from June 24 to July 12, 2024 (for students interested in visual storytelling)

 A two-week learn-from-home program for high school students at all experience levels, starting June 17, July 1, and July 15.

Applications for the on-campus session are due on April 19. Applications for learn-at-home sessions starting June 17, July 1, and July 15 are due on May 10. Students who apply, are accepted, and fully registered by March 8 can save $400 off the full fee for the on-campus academy or $200 off the full fee of the learn-from-home academy. We have limited need-based scholarships and financial aid available to students; students must email us for more information.

We hope you'll share this opportunity with your students. For more information about the Summer Journalism Academy, visit www.summerjournalism.org.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Email Flyer 2024.pdf

This would be a really good experience for many of you. See details in email from Michelle Crawford below.

Can Do (SC049885) is an exceptional charity offering fun, friendship and adventures for young people with disabilities living in East Lothian. As a unique, long-running, parent-led Scottish success story, Can Do has been providing fantastic activity programmes for youngsters with additional support needs since 1982.

Page
| 45

We provide school holiday playschemes in Easter, Summer & October, two term time weekly youth clubs & residential weekends. Activities range from arts and crafts, day trips to places like Blair Drummond Safari Park, marshmallow-toasting to trampolining, swimming, encounters with animals and even kayaking.

Can Do has been committed to setting the bar high when it comes to diverse, high-quality activities for children with special needs, and we’re proud to have maintained those high standards ever since.

We pride ourselves on our unique staffing model greatly made up of local volunteers providing support and encouragement to our young people enabling them to access their local communities and enjoy activities.

Anyone over the age of 15 years can apply to become one of our volunteers. We provide a PVG check, induction, and training. Successful applicants would gain skills, knowledge, and responsibility while having fun and doing something extremely rewarding. Volunteering through Can-Do looks great on college, university, and job applications, we also have a number of roles to progress to within our charity which could lead to paid work.

We are now looking to welcome new volunteers to our Playschemes and youth clubs for 2024. I have attached some information to be circulated round your organisation for anyone who may be interested in volunteering with us. We believe this would be a great opportunity for your students.

Volunteering Opportunity and Work Experience

About the Scottish Holiday - The Newman Holiday Trust is a voluntary organisation which provides free residential activity holidays for children and young people with additional needs who are from disadvantaged backgrounds from across the UK. The Scottish Holiday has been running for around 25 years and will take place from the 13th to the 21st of July this summer at Glenalmond College in Perth. There is no cost to volunteers for attending – all food and accommodation is provided, and car shares can be organised. All training is provided at the start of the holiday (with optional online training beforehand) and no previous experience is necessary. You’ll be giving the holiday of a lifetime to a child that wouldn’t otherwise have one. To be a full helper you will need to be 18 by the start date of the holiday. However, we can take two 17 year olds on each holiday for them to gain experience and support others. More information about the holidays can be found at our website here, and if you want to apply the application link is live here and closes at the end of March - so get them in quick! Any questions, please contact scotland@newmantrust.org

About the Newman Trust: The Trust provides holidays with one-to-one care for over 140 children aged 3-18 every summer in various locations around the United Kingdom. The holidays are provided at no cost to the children’s families.

Due to the high level of skilled care, they require or financial circumstances, the children selected for these breaks would not otherwise receive a holiday. The holidays provide a range of fun activities in a safe and supported environment and use a care ratio of one helper to one child at all times. Each holiday includes at least one fully qualified nurse whose sole task is to take care of the children’s medical needs.

The Trust is an entirely voluntary organisation and owes its success to over 200 people who dedicate their free time to helping these children. This voluntary structure ensures that every penny raised goes directly towards a child’s holiday.

Page | 47

About Volunteering: Being a volunteer helper on a Newman Trust holiday is a wonderfully rewarding experience. You will enable deserving children to have a holiday of a lifetime and contribute to a unique experience for all involved. The holidays are FUN, FULFILLING and strangely ADDICTIVE!

That said, the holidays are tiring and sometimes emotionally demanding. Real commitment is required before the holiday and on the week.

All new helpers are required to attend a recruitment session to meet a representative from the holiday so we can complete background checks. On the holiday itself it can be tough work looking after someone with additional needs and you'll need to put every effort into helping your child and working within the group. However, there's a lot of support, it’s great fun, and incredibly rewarding.

No prior training is needed - just a strong will to help others, lots of energy, and a sense of humour. There is also a very supportive and friendly environment with the more experienced helpers actively helping those newer to the role.

I would absolutely suggest that any prospective apprentices keep an eye on IBM social accounts (LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok) as well as register their interest on our IBM Apprenticeships Website to be the first to hear about National Apprenticeship Weeks 2023’s events. There is a real focus in 2023 to provide guidance and support for how to apply to IBM Technical Apprenticeships and what life is really like within IBM as an apprentice – Anyone can join these sessions! With my strategic view of the Apprentice Community, the community strives to collaborate with other groups such as the internal mental health and wellbeing team for early professionals.

Malgorzata Jagoda - Data, AI and Automation Sales.

I applied to join IBM in March 2021 (the very last round of applications) and was very fortunate to get assigned to a Talent Acquisition Role in HR.

Initially, I was planning to go travelling to South America in my gap year, and then apply to university. At that point, I still wasn’t sure whether I really wanted to go to university, but the ‘uni experience’ was very appealing. Then, along came the pandemic which took everyone by surprise and complicated many plans. IBM came up in a conversation I had with my friend, who was an apprentice at the time, and he explained what the futures scheme was. I applied, and found out I was successful within a couple of weeks of sending my application in. My role was in HR - something I never thought I’d find myself doing! I was then on the other side of the application process, recruiting Futures and University Placement students for the following year. This involved managing the applications, running Exploration Sessions and communicating outcomes. In my spare time, I took advantage of many giveback opportunities.

Page | 52

I was the co-lead for the PwDA (People with Diverse Abilities) community which enabled me to gain a better understanding of different disabilities and how I can support colleagues who may have them. I was also able to get involved in career fairs, mentoring schemes and many other great giveback initiatives.

In September, I started my Digital and Technology Solutions (DTS) Degree Apprenticeship at IBM. This means that 20% of my working week is dedicated to university, so I work for IBM 4 days of the week and study on 1. I am doing my 3year degree at Northeastern University in London which is remote. This year, I am also in a new role - Data, AI and Automation Sales. I am excited for the next 3 years and what’s to come afterwards.

Dr Jess Johnson is Associate Professor in Solid Earth Geophysics and, on 18th March, will present When hazards meet: What can earthquakes tell us about volcanoes?

Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are generally considered individually but earthquakes always accompany volcanic unrest. Jess examines the use of measurements of earthquakes to tell us about what is happening inside a volcano prior to and during an eruption, helping to manage response and mitigate risk.

This is an excellent opportunity for Geography students, in groups or individually, to understand the intersection of these two hazards and how this helps us to respond to the risk.
