Lacrosse County Selection Success!

On Wednesday 9 October 2013, selected girls from both the 1st and 2nd Lacrosse teams and the U15 team competed at trials for the West County Lacrosse team. Just getting selected for the trials was a big accomplishment for the girls and they all played with great enthusiasm and effort. Anna Mason (5Y) and Octavia Mason (5Y) were both selected to move forward for the U19

training session. Esme French (4X) was selected for the U15 A team and Emily Hughes (4Y), Rosie Fisher (4Y), and Stephanie Bankole (4X) were selected for the U15 B team. Scarlet Mason (4X)and Devon Mather (4X) were selected as reserves for the U15 team. Congratulations to the girls and good luck to them in their first West Counties Match in November!

On the Friday 27 September, the w hole of the First Year went to Marw ell Zoo. We left scho ol at 10.00am and it took us an ho ur to get to the zo o.

When we arrived w e walked to the Le arning Centre and snow leopards and on the way we saw owls! The Sutton Life Centre by Ruth Tav

I had a great time at the Hi I am Ruth and I am in 2X. what happened. We left Sutton Life Centre. Let me tell you journey was one hour and the school at 9.30am. The coach el sick, I had a great time 15 minutes. Even though I get trav we learnt many important on the bus. When we got there to handle online bullying, things about life such as how ny other useful things in dodgy boyfriends, the law and ma of telephone numbers just life, and at the end we got a list in a difficult situation. in case we ever found ourselves we also did something As well as this learning experience We all went rock climbing. fun for an hour before we left. k climbing wall. I know it This is me at the top of the roc not because I trusted in my looks as if was scared but I was team mates to hold me.

And all and all we all had a great off for the weekend.

On Friday 27 September, St George's very excitingly had an outings' day and the Third Year were lucky enough to get to go and spend the day in Dorking in the outdoors, doing bush craft. When we arrived we were told the rules of this game called ‘survival’ and it was basically instructing us what to do if we were in a plane crash and had to fend for ourselves - SCARY. We were told we had to make our own lunch, build our own campfires and construct our own tents/shelter. My team quickly got off to a good start making our shelter.

Some of us went off to collect dry wood which was particularly challenging as it had rained the previous night and everything was soaking! When we had gathered together enough wood we started on our tent. All we were given was two waterproof, camouflage ponchos, a cooking pot, two bungee cords, one long piece of string and something to set the pot upon to cook with. Once we were done with the tent and satisfied with it it was time to build the fire. Not as easy as it may sound.

We set off again to find dry substances, kindling and dry bark for the fire. After we had made the basis for our fire we came to the struggle of lighting it which believe me – was a struggle. We were given two ways to light the fire an old fashioned way and a modern way.

The modern way was unsurprisingly easier. My group struggled to keep the fire alight so our lunch didn’t turn out quite as well as we’d hoped (we were supplied by the school with an alternative meal)! When the day was coming to an end it was time for the ultimate test.

The tent test. My teammates and I had to clamber under our tents and get water poured over it to see if we would get wet or not. I was unfortunately sitting directly under a discreet hole and managed to get very wet. It all added to the fun of the day and I really enjoyed our day out, thank you to everyone who organised it and I definitely would recommend anyone doing it!

On Friday 27 September, Olivia, Grace W, Scarlet, Ese and Anna M all joined as a team for Third Year Team Building Day. We were getting down and dirty in the middle of nowhere for survival.

We didn’t really know what we should name our team so we got the word “Geek” from my beanie, the word “Homies” from Anna’s beanie, we also got a machete for survival so we thought we’d add it in there and we also got “New York” from Anna’s beanie. All together we produced the spectacular team name “The Geek Homies with Machetes in New York”. We were all enthusiastic and excited so when it came to building a tent for survival, we all had our own marvellous ideas.

With help from Sam, the instructor, we realised our tent should be low to keep warm so we took that into consideration and we ended up with the greatest waterproof and warmest tent ever!

When it came to making fire, we struggled. We tried absolutely everything. Grace was getting really good at lighting the fire. She was making fireworks everywhere! Unfortunately, our fire never kept burning as we did not have enough dry stuff. We tried tissue, everything! We never got our fire to keep burning so unfortunately we didn’t win but we had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs which was really what it was all about.

On Friday, the third year went on a bush craft outing to Dorking. We were split up in to groups of five and then set off to go and build a camp for our team.

In our team we had Chloe, Charlie, Lily, Grace and Ellie and Mick who was looking after our group. We were given a bag full of all the equipment we needed. We were given two army ponchos to make a camp with and some stretchy ropes and some string.

To make our den stronger we added lots of ferns to make it waterproof and more camouflaged. We decided to call our group the FERN-ARMY which suited very well. Next we had to make a fire and we layered ours with kindling and with lots of sturdy sticks. We were given poles to hang pots over the fire.

They gave every one a raisin cake mix and then challenge was to see who could make the best. Our group had a very strong fire and all the teachers gathered round it to keep warm, we loved our cake and so did the team leaders and they decided to give our team the prize for best camp. But there was one more thing, all five of us had to go in our den while everyone poured water on us to see if it was water proof, we didn’t get a drop on us. We were so happy with our achievement and then ate our raisin cake all the way home.

We had lots of fun!!!!!

The Fourth Years spent the day at Chessington; they had a great day at the park and zoo where some of them confronted their fears of creepy-crawlies and snakes!!

The Fifth Year spent the day in school learning some practical and fun life skills including: Cookery, Financial Management, Skin Care with a consultant from Molton Brown, Nail Care and Colour and Style.

Boarding Life The Boarders got in the mood for Halloween in the last craft club before Half Term by making Pumpkins!

Before coming to the UK I was a parish priest (vicar) in Hillcrest, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. I was responsible for five churches in Hillcrest and the Valley of 1000 Hills – one of them was the church at which Alan Paton worshipped and his book Cry the Beloved Country describes that church and countryside. Once here I did some teaching at Farnborough Hill before joining St George’s.

What is your greatest achievement?

Academically – my masters degree. Personally – surviving an international relocation and leaving behind my job, wider family, friends and homeland.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Not that interesting!

Who is/was the most influential person in your life?

At the moment: my husband, Andreas. Over the years: impossible to choose only one.

What was the last book you read?

‘Radical’ by Maajid Nawaaz.

What would you do if you won £2m in the Lottery?

The sensible answer is: pay off our cars, build a home somewhere breath-taking, put some money aside for our daughters, make a few donations and then have an awesome holiday with all my family. Maybe the £2 million won’t be enough.

If money was no object where would you travel to?

The moon and beyond.

What is your ultimate Desert Island Disc?

Which person alive or dead would you most like to spend a day with?

My mother. She died when I was 14.

SE Berkshire Netball Tournament

St George’s Launches Amnesty International Amnesty International is a world-wide organisation that promotes human rights. The fight for rights has been taken up by Mrs Magill and some dedicated activists of St George’s. We are committed to fighting injustice on a global scale.

So far we have made a music video to “What makes you Beautiful” by One Direction. We chose this song because one of the lines is “you light up my world like nobody else” and the symbol for Amnesty is a candle wrapped around barbed wire.

Isabella Loughlin was heavily involved in the music video along with Charlotte Coates. We are now working on supporting the ‘write for rights’ campaign. Girls in all years are welcome to come along and join us!

Seraphina Westcott 3X

On Monday 7 October, the U16 netball team took to the courts for their annual district tournament. Having been entered into the main cup competition the standard of play was very high. The team started off well, winning their first 2 matches respectively against Waingels and Ranelagh. Next up was Wellington. It was an exceptionally close match and the game was swinging one way and then the other. With the game tied and time running out unfortunately Wellington scored with the last play of the game winning by 8 goals to 7. The girls were extremely disappointed but reacted in the best way possible by being determined to win their remaining games. This target they achieved by beating Abbey, Marist ‘A’ and Charters, all by considerable margins, which meant that the team finished runners-up overall.

Mentions go to the whole team for their play and determination throughout the whole tournament: Jade Agnew, Eliza Ballin, Darcy Coop, Megan Dawson, Olivia Haig, Anna Mason, Octavia Mason, Caitlin McArthur and Emma Streatfeild.

Forthcoming Events Dr David Mitchell from the London New College of Humanities is coming to St George’s on Tuesday 26 November to meet the AS Religious Studies Students. His talk is entitled "Enlightenment in Ethiopia: A Philosophical Mystery," which he will relate to themes in our A level syllabus on the arguments for the existence of God. Professor Carolyn Muessig and Dr George Ferzocco from the University of Bristol will be delivering a Sixth Form lecture on the evening of Wednesday 27 November. Professor Muessig will discuss Visionary Women and Dr Ferzocco will give an insight into Dante. Parents are extremely welcome to attend. Lottie and Emily visit Downing Street Lottie and Emily Hughes had the extraordinary opportunity to visit Number 10 Downing Street recently with their parents, at a reception for the Catalyst Club, a branch of Cancer Research UK. Both girls, with their parents, have taken part in many fundraising events for CRUK.
