As another year draws to a close it is hard to believe that the girls and the staff have accomplished so much in the past 5 weeks. While the Upper Sixth and Fifth Year girls got their last exams under their belts and celebrated the end of their A Levels and GCSEs, the other year groups have experienced an array of academic and co-curricular challenges and adventures.

As well as challenging D of E expeditions, our Third Year girls went on their annual History and French visit to Normandy over the 75th anniversary of D-Day celebrations and certainly had a trip to remember, while the First Years climbed, gorge-walked, canoed and hiked their way through the Brecon Beacons.

Following the success of House Athletics (during a break in the June rains!), the last two weeks of term saw numerous House sports events along with House Drama, the House Quiz, Sports Review of the Year, the annual Art Exhibition and Music for a Summer Evening concert. It was wonderful to celebrate a very successful year with girls and their families at our Prize Giving on the last day of term which was a fitting send off to our wonderful Upper Sixth leavers as they head off into their diverse and exciting futures.

END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS

PRIZE GIVING After a busy week of House competitions and end of year events we welcomed parents to St George’s for Prize Giving to celebrate the girls’ achievements over the past year.

Amongst the many academic awards and effort and progress prizes for each year group, girls waited on tenterhooks to hear the results of the hotly contested House Work Shield For Merits and the House Championship Cup, this year won by Becket and Alexander respectively.

During Prize Giving we said goodbye to our leaving Upper Sixth girls, each of whom was presented with a Leaver’s Diploma by Mrs Hewer, who spoke to all those present about the girls’ achievements.

This year we were delighted to welcome James Shone, Founder of I Can & I Am, as guest speaker. James was a truly inspirational speaker encouraging the girls to believe in themselves and inspiring confidence in them to focus on who they are and what they are able to do, rather than focusing on what they can’t.

END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS

VALEDICTORY SERVICE After lots of hard work for their A Level exams we welcomed back our Upper Sixth leavers for an emotional and memorable last day as St George’s pupils. The Valedictory Service was led by Reverend Watts and pupils, staff,

parents and governors were able to enjoy the singing of the Chapel Choir along with readings and reflections on the girls’ time at the School.

SIXTH FORM BALL On Thursday 4 July we said our final farewells to the Upper Sixth at their Leavers’ Ball. The girls began their celebrations with a drinks reception and photographs with parents and staff on the South Lawn.

In the Sue Cormack Hall, the girls had arranged a photobooth and the catering team put on a lovely three course meal.

The girls will be greatly missed, and we look forward to welcoming them back as Old Georgians in the not too distant future.

END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS

SUMMER TERM AWARDS The summer term awards, held on the last Tuesday of term, highlighted the girls’ wonderful achievements over this term. Along with many academic awards there were awards for Music, LAMDA and Music Theatre examinations, the Leiths cookery toolbox course and the silver and Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Congratulations to all girls for their hard work this term.

HOUSE QUIZ Tuesday 2 July, branded ‘Super Tuesday’, saw lots of excitement surrounding the end of term House competitions. The day kicked off with the House Quiz, later followed by the House Tennis and House Rounders tournaments (page 28). We loved welcoming back our Fifth Year and Upper Sixth girls to join the fun.

The quiz, run by Mr Hoar, was a test fo the girls’ general knowledge in academic areas, with a number of ‘beat the teacher’ rounds with questions ranging from English grammar to historical and religious buildings, and more light-hearted areas, of which the ‘Name that Disney movie’ round was a firm favourite with the girls.

Amongst the fun, the closely contested House Championship title couldn’t be forgotten, and girls were keen to win the quiz for their house. Well done to Alexander who won overall, and the top three teams, Alexander 4 in 1st, Becket 5 in 2nd and Alexander 5 in 3rd.

KNATCHBULL CHEESE AND GAMES NIGHT On Thursday 13 June the Lower Sixth celebrated the end of their internal school examinations with a wine and cheese night in Knatchbull. The girls chatted and sang along to Elton John songs together and ate heartily over a huge cheese board and a glass of wine. It was lovely to see the girls mixing well, enjoying each others company and relaxing after their exams.

BIG BOARDING SLEEP The BSA Big Boarding Sleep took place on Wednesday 19 June to celebrate National Boarding Week, and Markham welcomed some new faces to the boarding house. The girls worked with our Resident Artist on making shrink plastic jewellery. They thoroughly enjoyed decorating their individual pieces and watching them form in the oven afterwards. Some boarding house games followed afterwards before turning in for the night in the dorms.

BOARDERS GARDEN GAMES

On Saturday 22 June, the boarders enjoyed an afternoon in the sunshine playing garden games, and doing face painting and glitter tattoos. After a lovely BBQ the girls huddled around the fire pit to toast marshmallows and make s’mores. It was lovely to get the girls outside to enjoy some fresh air and the wonderful English summer... even if the games did get a little competitive!

KNATCHBULL BOARDING TASTER On Wednesday 19 June, the Fourth Year came to Knatchbull to have a taste of what will be in store for them when they move houses in September. They enjoyed touring the house and exploring the facilities on offer before enjoying games and s’mores with the current Knatchbull girls. It was pleasing to see a number of day girls who are converting to boarding attend too!

SALTERS’ SCIENCE FESTIVAL Four First Years, Chloe, Orla, Rosie and Mila, took part in the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry at the University of Surrey on Thursday 23 May. They competed with teams from other schools in two very fun and interesting challenges. The first was to solve a mystery linked to the 150th anniversary of the modern periodic table. The pupils had to carry out analytical tests to discover the identify of the thief who had stolen one of the elements. After lunch in the beautiful university grounds, the pupils began the next challenge based on slime. They had to write about the science behind slime, make slime and dyes, then create a colourful slime sculpture.

The day was finished off with a science magic show, where the girls were fascinated by a range of exciting demonstrations. The girls were a

credit to St George’s with their enthusiasm and determination throughout the day.

LIVING RAINFOREST The Second Years went the Living Rainforest on Wednesday 5 June to follow up on their work on rainforests in Geography. The girls explored the enormous glass houses, filled with plants and animals adapted to the rainforest environment. They spotted a number of amazing and interesting plants and animals, but the firm favourites were the blue poison dart frogs and the pygmy marmosets! Unfortunately the two toed sloth was feeling shy and wasn’t spotted on the visit!

KALLOS GALLERY The Kallos Gallery specialises in the sale of antiquities from the ancient world. The name ‘Kallos’ means beauty in Greek. On their trip to London the Fourth Year Classicists were lucky enough to be shown around by an ex St George’s pupil, Hayley McCole, who is the gallery’s specialist. They saw marble statues of characters from Greek mythology, ancient pots in different styles, and jewellery and rings which had been worn by people in Ancient Greece and Rome. In the afternoon they visited the British Museum and the rooms which exhibit

artefacts from Ancient Greek and Roman life, such as surgical and musical instruments, and drinking cups used at the symposia. They also saw the Parthenon Frieze from Athens which was very impressive. Before leaving, they had the opportunity to visit the Bassae Frieze which was very significant for those studying Classical Civilisation GCSE as many of the characters in the course can be found on this frieze, such as Achilles, Hercules and Penthesilea. It was a very interesting day and the girls learnt a great deal.

READING BUDDHIST CENTRE The Third Years experienced a meditation session led by the internationally renouned Buddhist Teacher, Gen Kelsang Nyingpo at the Reading Kadampa Centre on Tuesday 11 June. The calming meditation experience was perfectly timed before the girls commenced their internal examinations the following week. The girls had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Buddhism and find out more about life as a Buddhist nun in the UK today. Gen Nyingpo gave some thought provoking answers to the insightful questions that the girls asked.

JANE AUSTEN HOUSE AND MUSEUM On 24 June, the Fourth Year paid a visit to Jane Austen’s House Museum. This was designed to complement their study of “Pride and Prejudice”. On arrival, the group met their guide (Ms Annalie Talent) who delivered an Introductory talk on Jane Austen in context.

This talk was very interesting and informative, and it gave the girls a true insight into what Jane Austen’s life must have been like. After the talk they were split into three groups which meant they could spend a more useful amount of time in each activity in smaller groups. One activity was visiting Jane Austen’s kitchen, where they made lavender pouches, and wrote with a quill feather pen, which was very exciting. For another, Ms Talent showed them some objects that would have been around during Jane Austen’s time. For example a glove stretcher, coin purse, needlework, etc. This was very intriguing as the girls could not guess at first what the purpose of all of the objects was.

Most importantly the girls had the chance to explore the cottage Jane Austen spent most of the last eight years of her life, which was

incredible as they walked on the same grounds as Jane Austen, saw her writing table (which was smaller than anticipated) and her letters.

After lunch, the groups reconvened and took a stroll to visit Chawton House, which was owned

by Edward Austen Knight, Jane’s brother. At Chawton they got the chance to try Regency dancing, for which they learnt a simplified version of the routine; they all felt like they were part of the Regency Period (the only thing missing was Colin Firth). They had the chance to explore the grounds, including the Chawton estate chapel, St Nicholas’s church. In the churchyard, they saw the graves of Cassandra Austen (Jane’s mother) and Cassandra Elizabeth Austen (Jane’s sister). In addition, they were given a tour of the House, it gave a grand impression. The most impressive aspect of the house was the stained windows as it showed the people that owned the house and their crest. Returning to Jane’s cottage , the group finished the intriguing and amusing day with a tea break with strawberries and cream and scones and jam.

ROYAL ACADEMY SUMMER EXHIBITION

CORINIUM MUSEUM & CHEDWORTH VILLA

On Wednesday 26 July the Lower Sixth A Level Artists and Second Year pupils visited the Royal Academy of Arts for the Summer Exhibition, which has run without interruption since 1769.

This year the girls saw lots of abstract and colourful pieces. One room which was particularly interesting showed ideas for architecture and small models of newly designed buildings. This was a fascinating way of exploring the architecture side of art.

This year’s British painter Jock McFadyen RA co-ordinated this, the 251st Summer Exhibition. Over 1,500 works were on display, most of them for the first time. Highlights included an animal-themed ‘menagerie’ in the Central Hall, with works by artists including Polly Morgan, Charles Avery, Banksy and Mat Collishaw. Artist sisters Jane and Louise Wilson RA had curated two galleries, one of which showcased work exploring light and time. Further artists exhibiting include Jeremy Deller, Marcus Harvey, Tracey Emin RA and Frank Bowling.

After visiting the main exhibition, the girls went downstairs to see the Royal Academy Schools graduate students’ work. This involved many installations and interactive pieces using lots of different materials, which the girls thoroughly enjoyed seeing.

On Friday 21 June the Second Year went on a Classics trip. Travelling by coach, they left first thing in the morning for the Corinium Museum in Cirencester. At the museum, they looked at the many mosaics and artefacts which dated from the period of the Roman occupation and which had been found in the local area. They learned about the jewellery the Romans wore, the food they ate and the games they played.

After a visit to the gift shop, the group got on the coach again and headed to Chedworth Villa, where they had their picnic lunch and got into two groups for the guided tours. The guides showed them the indoor baths, the dining room, the shrine with its freshwater pool, still supplied by a local spring and inhabited by snails which were brought to Britain by the Romans. They learned how the occupants of the villa would have spent their time in comparatively luxurious surroundings, and were also shown the areas of the villa which had not been excavated or restored yet. A lady, called Gaia, who was dressed in Roman clothing, showed them how the Romans were able to use plants and crushed beetles to make dyes for their garments. The last building they visited was the ‘latrina’ where they learned about the crucial role played by a sponge on a stick!

NORMANDY This year marked the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy and the Third Years were fortunate enough to embark upon the annual trip in such an important year.

After leaving the school at a very early hour, the group headed towards Folkestone for the journey by Eurotunnel to Calais. First stop was Arromanches, where the famous 360 cinema showed a short film about Normandy’s 100 Days. After an exploration of the beaches of Arromanches, complete with World War Two relics, and a stroll around the town, it was time to check in to the Centre Bon Sejour.

Day two was jam packed with activities as they visited Bayeux, home of the famous Tapestry, Omaha and the D-Day landing beaches, the American Cemetery and Caen for the Memorial Museum. Despite so much activity, the girls still had enough energy for a disco in the evening.

On Thursday a more leisurely breakfast was followed by a trip to the Merville Gun Battery, a decommissioned coastal fortification that

was one of the first to be attacked by the Allies during D-Day. The afternoon was spent enjoying a beautiful day in the sun at the seaside town of Cabourg before returning to the Bon Sejour for swimming and time to cool off in the pool. At various points throughout the day they were privileged to see Dakotas flying the exact route taken on that important day 75 years ago. The sight and sound really resonated and made the historical event feel even more real. Of course, there was another disco to enjoy in the evening.

The final part of the trip was a visit to the Pegasus Bridge Museum, site of one of the pivotal victories in the early stages of D-Day as it was the first taken by the Allies in the fight to free France. While at the memorial, the girls were lucky enough to meet with a Veteran who spoke of his experiences of that time. On the journey home they discussed, and reflected, upon all that we had experienced and everyone agreed that this was a once in a lifetime trip to remember.

FRESHERS’ BBQ Despite the rain we welcomed our 2019 First, Second and Third Year Freshers on Friday 7 June for our annual welcome BBQ. The new girls and their shadows from First and Second Year enjoyed a game of benchball and experienced the SGA photobooth in the sports hall before heading to the dining hall for an indoor BBQ consisting of sausages, halloumi and butterfly chicken.

The steel band added a hint of summer to the event, that had to be moved inside this year, and the ice cream van was a lovely addition which was enjoyed by girls and staff alike. Thank you to all of the girls and staff for welcoming our new joiners, and we look forward to seeing all of the girls again in September.

SILVER DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD PRACTICE This year St George’s girls in Fourth Year undertook their first ever hybrid Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition to the Lake District.

The girls set off bright and early on Thursday 6th June and drove by minibus to Coniston Water, arriving in time for the rain clouds to clear and the sun to come out. They enjoyed a short day walk with their instructors in the beautiful setting by the lake, with the Old Man of Coniston (the local mountain) looking on from above.

On days two and three the groups were introduced to canoeing. They were kitted up in wetsuits and buoyancy aids and went out onto the water to learn how to paddle, turn and reverse stroke. They were soon whizzing up the lake to lunch on an idyllic beach nearby. In the afternoon

they played games to help improve their paddling technique. On their second day of canoeing the girls were taken on a journey down the lake to the island that inspired the stories of the Swallows and the Amazons - what an adventure! However, that night, the rain poured down and the groups were grateful for the shelter of the school minibus as they drove across to Ulverston to stock up on some food supplies for the next few days.

The expedition finished with a two day journey on foot through the valley of Elterwater, with stunning views and beautiful sunshine.

Congratulations to all involved on a successful training and practice expedition and good luck for the qualifying expedition.

OTHER NEWS GOLD DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD PRACTICE During the May half term our intrepid Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award group went up to the stunning Lake District for their practice expedition.

There they embarked on two days training in open canoes on Lake Coniston, before heading off on foot, trekking across the National Park to Langdale where they camped, then onward to Easdale, to finish off their expedition in Ambleside beside Lake Windermere. Despite some quite challenging Lakeland weather, the group pulled together and kept their spirits high. Well done Golds!

DESERT ISLAND DISCS The final desert island discs of the year took place on the morning of Friday 28 June, and this time it was the turn of Mr Lee, whose eclectic choices were somewhat different to those who have previously taken part. Telling stories of his time at, and life before, St George’s, Mr Lee shared his favourite music, from Shostakovich’s Leningrad symphony to George Benson’s ‘On Broadway’.

BRECON BEACONS On Monday 17 June the First Years set out on a marvellous adventure to the Brecon Beacons. They travelled by coach to Merthyr Tydfil where they boarded a steam train to take them on the remainder of their journey up into the highest mountain range in South Wales. Once encamped at Plas Dolygaer, the girls enjoyed a fantastic programme of activities including kayaking, canoeing, hiking, geo caching, gorge walking and climbing. In the evenings they played games, did a quiz and had a lovely campfire with marshmallows and hot chocolate. Great fun was had by all!

OTHER NEWS

We were thrilled to be highly commended in the “Best School Menu Secondary” category of the City Kids School Food Awards this term. Our catering team work tirelessly to offer girls and staff a large range of choices for breakfast, lunch and supper, not to mention break and tea time too! We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their hard work, and congratulate them on receiving this commendation.

WORK EXPERIENCE In the penultimate week of the academic year, a number of Fifth Year girls completed work experience. They were given guidance as to how to make the most of this time in their sessions with the “Tinker Tailor” programme earlier in the year. The girls spent time in a variety of organisations including Atkins, Paul Smith and Accenture and will have gained enormously from the experience in thinking about their post-18 future. Olivia spent her week at Jo Downs Handmade Glass in Ripley and the following are her impressions.

“For my work experience I approached a gallery selling hand-made glass artwork. I was particularly interested in learning about the public relations and marketing side to the business as I will be going to their Cornwall head office to spend some time in the summer with the Head of Marketing and PR to learn more. I thought it especially useful to have first hand experience beforehand in one of their galleries. I undertook a range of activities during my week including making jewellery to sell, participating in customer workshops, working with the furnace, firing products, stocktaking and categorising all products. My favourite task was mapping out bespoke designs for commissioned pieces of artwork. I really loved working with the team and I felt I learnt a lot from them. They also explained the whole life process of making the products and what goes on with the business beyond the gallery. I picked up a range of skills and enjoyed new experiences, as well as learning about what happens behind the spaces open to the public.

Furthermore, I hope my new awareness of the business will help when I find out more about the public relations and marketing strategies used.”

HOUSE ATHLETICS With a wet and windy week leading up to House Athletics, there was some doubt as to whether the competition would take place. But the sun shone and warmed the pitches and House Athletics got off to a cracking start! Every girl in every house took part in an event which meant that every run, throw and jump earned points for their houses. Medals were awarded for the top 3 in each event and the girls rose to the challenge. There were some outstanding achievements and girls pushed each other to achieve their very best.

All four houses gave their very best but there was one house that really surged ahead on the score board.

Alexander House won by a comfortable margin to give them valuable points on the overall leaderboard, Becket House came 2nd, followed by Darwin House and Churchill House. The points difference between Becket, Darwin and Churchill Houses was incredibly close showing how tight the competition was. Well done to all our competitiors and thank you to all our staff and pupil helpers!

SPORTS REVIEW OF THE YEAR Closing the year in style, the Sports Review of the Year brought much entertainment to girls and their parents on Monday 1 July, as we welcomed former GB and Olympic swimmer Mark Foster to celebrate the girls’ sporting successes over the year. This year’s new format saw a ‘Kahoot’ quiz and a ‘guess the teacher’ picture round in between awards, which caused much amusement for girls and staff alike. Congratulations to all girls on their wonderful sporting achievements this year.

HOUSE TENNIS After the excitement of the House Quiz, Super Tuesday continued with House Tennis, where the senior and junior teams worked exceptionally well and played some fantastic tennis. Congratulations to all girls who took part.

HOUSE ROUNDERS Super Tuesday was finished off with House Rounders for the junior girls, which had been rearranged due to the bad weather earlier in the term. The girls were excited that the competition was able to take place and were very enthusiastic about playing. All houses entered two teams from First, Second and Third year, and excellent team work was on show through out.

SECOND PERSON NARRATIVE Second Person Narrative by Jemma Kennedy explores the life of one woman, from birth to death. Our Second Year girls successfully produced a performance which explored many crucial moments of a woman’s life, with innovative physical theatre and superb characterisation.

The main character of ‘You’ was portrayed by a number of girls, each of whom brought their own unique performance, evoking humour and creating poignant moments which resonated with the audience tremendously. An original, creative and memorable performance was produced by the Second Year girls, following their enthusiasm and hard work. It was a pleasure to see the year-group work so collaboratively and to witness the incredible talent the girls possess.

MUSIC FOR A SUMMER EVENING Our final concert of the year was the fabulous Music for a Summer Evening, which began with a drinks reception and canapés on the South Lawn. The evening saw performances from the Chapel Choir and Jazz Group as well as soloists, and, as is tradition, Mr Hillier said goodbye to the leaving Upper Sixth choristers. The audience joined for the final numbers, some favourites from musicals including ‘The Rhythm of Life’ from Cy Coleman’s ‘Sweet Charity’, and ‘Somewhere’ from Leonard Bernstein’s ‘West Side Story’.

SUMMER ART EXHIBITION On Monday 1 July St George’s held a Summer Art Exhibition for girls and parents, consisting of a variety of work from Textiles to Photography to Fine Art. Those who attended were able to observe a wide range of pieces, varying from younger years to GCSE students, as well as being able to view outstanding pieces made by this year’s A Level girls. A highlight was experiencing the fantastic work displayed by our Artist in Residence, who, with great talent, has created beautiful ceramics, paintings and sculptures.

The girls thoroughly enjoyed being able to exhibit their work, we were delighted to have this opportunity to portray the high level of art that the girls are capable of.

LIONS OF WINDSOR The Lions of Windsor & Maidenhead 2019 public art event will see a giant pride of supersized lion sculptures displayed across the Royal Borough to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria. This will raise funds for local charities and raise awareness for the increasing endangerment of lions. ‘George’ the lion cub, arrived at the school three weeks before the end of term, and the Sixth Form art pupils worked on a collaborative design that represents the school. The lion was painted with acrylic paint and had an extended tail design made from mod rock. The design composed of three St George’s girls linking arms whilst watching the Ascot races. The amazingly painted, intricate horse was painted by Miss Finnigan, the Artist in Residence. On the other side of the lion a red dragon was painted to represent St George and the dragon, and gold leaf was added to emphasise the highlights on the scales.

HOUSE DRAMA This year’s House Drama competition took place on Thursday 27 June and was enjoyed by staff and girls across the school. We saw fantastic individual, paired and group performances from each house, including pieces from Gut Girls, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Congratulations to all girls who performed, directed and created artistic programmes for the competition. ART COMPETITION Girls in all year groups were invited to enter the Summer Term Art Competition. The theme was Dragons and there were many lovely drawings and painted entries to judge as well as some 3D artwork. The artwork was displayed and admired at the Summer Art Exhibition, and with so many wonderful entries, the winning and highly commended pieces were chosen from the First, Second and Third Year entries.

First Year - Rosie for her tiny, delicate fimo dragons inside a matchbox world, as well as an

imaginative drawing.

Second Year - Oona for her detailed painting onto stones

Third Year - Lucy for her large, skillful painting of a dragon’s face
