FORTNIGHTLY NEWS AND EVENTS FOR ST GEORGE’S PARENTS

From the Principal Tina Campbell

“ Your attitude, more than your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” John C. Maxwell, Failing Forward: How to Make the Most of Your Mistakes. Father Gift led his first service with us on Monday afternoon at St George’s Cathedral and it was wonderful to have a School Chaplain back in our midst working amongst the students.

Managing the restraints of COVID -19 upon our lives and striving to make sense of the increasing conflict in the Ukraine, are just two aspects of the world today that are difficult for us to make sense of and fully comprehend.

Thank you for being with us Father Gift, you are indeed a Gift for St George’s and the whole School Community.

Building resilience – the ability to adapt to challenges, to tackle difficult situations positively and to learn life lessons from our experiences, all help to develop the ability to manage stress and the associated feelings of anxiety and uncertainty.

Father Gift spoke of the importance of resilience and integrity at these times and on challenging us all to believe that we will get through these times together by supporting one another and by celebrating our successes along the way.

The first step in supporting resilience is to keep believing in oneself. Father Gift supported us with this by telling us we could do this together – the sense of connectedness within our community and in seeking to support each other are important in developing a resilient mindset. I hope that the Year 9 students experienced such connectedness as they faced challenges in Karrakup this week. Every successful individual needs to know that they have at least one person in their corner that truly believes in their ability to thrive and who loves them unconditionally, no matter what. My hope is that outside of immediate family, St George’s students find this one person amongst either the staff or student population at St George’s. Father Gift as School Chaplain has his door always open to any student needing that additional support or who might be wanting to talk through any problems or concerns.

Bouncing back from challenging situations and adapting to the many changes within our lives currently can sometimes be difficult. It was wonderful to see the Year 9 classes head off on their Adventures Days to Manjedal Activity Centre this week and I thank Miss Jamie Pedler for working so hard behind the scenes to ensure these experiences continued for the students even in COVID times. To Mr Collins, Mr Hardman, Mr Dempers, Miss Kelly, Father Gift and Ms Donovan, a huge thank you too for preparing yourselves to escape the safety of your classrooms and the School for a day to take on the challenges of archery, high ropes, mountain biking and the aerial runway with your Year 9 groups. 1
