Dr. Andrew W. Hakin In 2020, St. Francis Xavier University welcomed to campus our 19th President and Vice Chancellor, Dr. Andrew Hakin. Dr. Hakin is only the fourth lay President of the university.

Dr. Hakin is well suited for StFX: his career to this point has been driven by his loyalty, his ambition, and his unfettered curiosity about the world around him.

Dr. Hakin, a native of the north of England, completed his degree at the University of Leicester. He stayed at Leicester to complete his doctoral studies in Physical Chemistry in 1987. At the University of Leicester Dr. Hakin met his wife Linda, who is also a Leicester graduate.

Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alberta, the Hakins moved to the University of Lethbridge in 1989, where they remained until their shift to Antigonish in 2020. Dr. Hakin’s academic trajectory reveals a life spent in service to academic and intellectual inquiry, as well as a desire to contribute to the underpinning systems of academia. After five years as an assistant professor of Chemistry, he was promoted to associate professor in 1994, and then to full professor in 2003. While at Lethbridge University he received the Distinguished Teaching Award.

As a researcher, Dr. Hakin spent years investigating the thermodynamics of aqueous protein systems – particularly, the effect of temperature and pressure on those systems. He’s conducted work in biotechnology, bioremediation, and enzymes and proteins. Dr. Hakin received Lethbridge’s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2000, the Stig Sunner Memorial Award for research achievement from the International Calorimetry Conference, and is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

He became the President of the Faculty Association of the University of Lethbridge in 2001, and after earning the rank of Full Professor, shifted towards the administrative branch of the university. He served as the Provost and Academic Vice-President at Lethbridge from 2007 until 2020, and became known as a champion of diversity and inclusion. His work was recognized by the Blackfoot people in a special naming ceremony at Homecoming in 2017; he was dubbed Iinniowmoowakima, which means “Herding the Buffalo.”

As an administrator, Dr. Hakin led the charge in Lethbridge to become a “destination university;” he worked to create a strong undergraduate and graduate academic experience, boosted academic programming, and increased domestic and international enrolment.

Beyond the university, Dr. Hakin has devoted significant time to several organizations, particularly the Sinneave Family Foundation, which is dedicated to building successful futures for adolescents and emerging adults on the autism spectrum.

StFX is proud to welcome Dr. Andy Hakin as the 19th President and Vice Chancellor of our university. In just a few short months, he has led the university through a difficult time with grace and humour, and we are eager to see what the coming years will hold for our community.

The History of St. Francis Xavier University One of Canada’s leading undergraduate universities, St. Francis Xavier University traces its origins to a small school of higher learning founded by Most Rev. Dr. Colin F. MacKinnon in Arichat, Cape Breton in 1853. Two years later, the institution was relocated to Antigonish and the Highland Heart of Nova Scotia has been home to StFX ever since. By 1856, an ambitious curriculum had been developed in nine subjects taught by six professors to 49 students. In just three years, enrollment had tripled. By an act of the provincial legislature full university powers were granted in 1886. Today’s enrollment now stands at 4,100.

StFX’s second president, the Most Rev. Dr. John Cameron, had the foresight and vision to invite the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame to staff a school in Antigonish for young women. This St. Bernard’s Academy was affiliated with the university in 1894 as Mount Saint Bernard College. In 1897, StFX became the first Catholic co-educational university in North America to grant degrees to women.

The early graduates of the university received bachelor of arts degrees. This standard academic program was broadened by the energy of new faculty, and the master of arts degree was available by 1899. Just prior to the turn of the century, the university had departments of law, commercial studies and a faculty of applied science, the first in Nova Scotia. By 1904, bachelor of science degrees were awarded. Programs in commerce, education, engineering, music, nursing, nutrition and physical education were developed over the years.

The Antigonish Movement, a program of self-help through farmer and fishermen credit unions and co-operatives, began on the StFX campus in the 1920s. Today, both the Coady International Institute and the Extension Department continue the work of pioneers, Rev. Dr. J.J. Tompkins and Rev. Dr. Moses M. Coady. The influence of this work is recognized around the world. This heritage has helped shape the special character of the university throughout its history. StFX is also well known for the tremendous loyalty of its alumni, and its enduring sense of community. StFX students achieve the highest standards in academics, research, athletics, cultural endeavours and community service. Today Xaverian graduates are world-ready, combining strong academic credentials with educational technology skills and a commitment to learning, spiritual and personal growth, and community engagement from local to global.

DOCTOR OF LAWS HONORIS CAUSA DR. LAUREL HALFPENNY MacQUARRIE Port Hawsbury, NS Judge Laurel J. Halfpenny MacQuarrie was raised in Melford, Guysborough County, NS. She received her BA in 1984 and her B.Ed. in 1985, both from StFX. Before attending UNB for her LL.B., she worked as an aid to an MP in Ottawa. Admitted to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1990, she entered private practice, before joining the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service, during which time she prosecuted everything from speeding tickets to first degree murder. Judge Halfpenny MacQuarrie was involved in continuing legal education for Crown Attorneys and served on the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. Before her 2003 appointment to the Provincial Court, she did a two-year secondment with the Provincial Prosecution Services’ Appeals Branch. Judge Halfpenny MacQuarrie presides in Port Hawkesbury, NS. In 2012, she established the first Wellness Court in Nova Scotia, which examines the underlying cause(s) of offending behaviour of high-risk clients and, together with a Court team, determines a wellness plan to reduce and/or eliminate further criminal activity. In 2016, Judge Halfpenny MacQuarrie began working with the Wagmatcook and We’koqma’q First Nations Chiefs, Councils and Elders to establish a communitybased Court. On April 4, 2018, Wagmatcook First Nations Court held its first sitting. Judge Halfpenny MacQuarrie is humbled to preside in the Wagmatcook First Nations Court, were the sentencing, healing and restorative justice plans reflecting the Seven Sacred Teaching are designed in collaboration with the Elders’ Community Justice Council. Judge Halfpenny MacQuarrie has been an invited speaker at many universities and has presented across Canada for the Canadian Bar Association, the National Judicial Institute, and others, including presenting with Senator Murray Sinclair at Six Nations of the Grand River, ON regarding Indigenous justice. Judge Halfpenny MacQuarrie has had a close relationship with the StFX forensic psychology special concentration. She’s had students do placements in her Wellness Court and has presented at the annual StFX Forensic Psychology Day. She is also a longtime volunteer, serving as President of Leeside Transition House Society, the Port Hawkesbury chapter of Canadian Parents for French, the Strait Area Soccer Club, and the Port Hawkesbury Highland Dance Association.

She chaired the Town of Port Hawkesbury’s Planning Advisory Committee, the Port Hawkesbury School Advisory Council, the Port Hawkesbury Courthouse Users’ Committee, and she currently sits on the Board of Directors with Soccer Nova Scotia. Professionally, she is a past President of the Nova Scotia Provincial Court Judges’ Association and is a board member of the Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges and the Canadian branch of the International Association of Women Judges. In 2018, Judge Halfpenny MacQuarrie was recognized with the Canadian Bar Association - Nova Scotia Branch’s Distinguished Service Award.

OUTSTANDING STAFF TEACHING AWARD ADAM BADEN-CLAY Coady International Institute Adam joined the Coady in August 2011 as youth programs coordinator.

He transitioned to the education programs coordinator role in March 2014 and then returned as manager of youth leadership programs in August 2014. Adam brings significant experience in new project development, Australian indigenous development and international youth programming in East Africa, Canada, Switzerland and Australia.

Adam previously managed a livelihoods & community engagement adult-ed. residential program for young indigenous men in northern Australia, and before that facilitated experiential learning and volunteer opportunities in East Africa for North American youth. He served for several years in the Australian Army, including a peacekeeping deployment with the UN to East Timor. Adam has a Graduate Certificate in International and Community Development, a BA (History), an Advanced Diploma in Management, a Diploma in Personnel Administration, and a Certificate in Vocational Instruction. He is also a Coady grad, having completed a certificate in Facilitation and Training Approaches for Community Change (FTACC) in 2014. He is currently studying towards a Master of Adult Education, with a focus on supporting youth leadership for social change.

OUTREACH AWARD DR. LISA LUNNEY BORDEN Professor, Faculty of Education Lisa Lunney Borden is a Professor in the faculty of education who holds the John Jerome Paul Chair for Equity in Mathematics Education striving to improve outcomes in mathematics for Mi’kmaw and African Nova Scotian youth. As an undergraduate student at StFX, Lisa began volunteering with X-Project which led her to a teaching career in We’koqma’q First Nation where she spent ten years as a secondary mathematics teacher, a vice-principal and principal, as well as the provincial mathematics leader for all Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey schools in Nova Scotia. Lisa credits her students and the Mi’kmaw community for inspiring her to think differently about mathematics education which continues to shape her work today. She is committed to research and outreach that focuses on decolonizing mathematics education through culturally based practices and experiences that are rooted in Indigenous languages and knowledge systems. She is a sought-after speaker nationally and internationally and has a passion for working with teachers and their students. Lisa has helped to create the Show Me Your Math program that inspired thousands of Mi’kmaw youth to share the mathematical reasoning inherent in their own community contexts, and an outreach program called Connecting Math to Our Lives and Communities that brings similar ideas to Mi’kmaw and African Nova Scotian youth as an afterschool program. She currently serves as the vice-president of the Candian Mathematics Education Study Group and sits on the Canadian Mathematical Society’s reconciliation committee. And, 31 years later she still volunteers for X-Project. She is a transplanted New Brunswicker who lives with husband, Anthony, and her three cats–Kitty, Nono, and Buddy–in Antigonish NS

COMMUNITY PARTNER AWARD RECOGNITION VENCEREMOS DEVELOPMENT CONSULT Coleman Agyeyomah is the executive director of Venceremos Development Consult. Venceremos is an experienced provider of safe and enriching international education programs. This organization has collaborated with StFX Immersion Service Learning since 2015 to develop and offer immersive experiential learning opportunities for students in Ghana. These Immersion experiences have been integrated with a 3-credit and a 6-credit course. Students received credit upon completion of; reflection assignments, a majorpaper and required hours of work in community placements. The team at Venceremos delivered on-site orientations for students including a tour of its facilities, anoverview of relevant policies, safety and emergency response requirements, and local norms. They provided ongoing supervision, cultural guidance and the necessary resources students might need while in Ghana. Coleman ensured that he and other Venceremos representatives were available on an on-call basis for emergencies and, scheduled student check-ins while in the field. He and his team arranged safe housing and food options for students and, were present to support and guide individuals with personal health concerns and issues for the duration of their time in Ghana. Coleman delivered in class lessons and lectures giving context to Ghana in Africa and the local dynamics of change development and facilitated reflection on experiences on a regular basis. The Ghana Immersion Service Learning classes provided students from a wide variety of disciplines the basis from which to critically analyze their experience and build a nuanced understanding of the global conditions that have framed Ghana’s development, and the current situations that influence efforts to contend with these

GRADUATING STUDENT SPEAKER TIFFANY GOULD ’20 We’koqma’q, Nova Scotia Ms. Tiffany Gould is a community member from We’koqma’q First Nation and a proud mother to 4 children. Since graduating at We’koqma’q high school in 2006, her plan was to continue her education and pursue a lifelong dream to become a teacher. She enrolled at Cape Breton University right after high school and completed her B.A with a focus on Mi’kmaq studies in 2010. Tiffany took some time off to focus on her family, then returned to school to take the next step in her education journey and moved to St.FX in 2012 for her B.Ed. She completed her B.Ed in 2014 and starting working within her community. Again in 2018 Tiffany wanted to further her education and signed up for her M.Ed., which she has completed in Summer of 2020 and is receiving her Degree on December 5, 2020 with her fellow grads. Since she was a young girl, Tiffany always dreamed on coming back to her community to teach and help strengthen the Mi’kmaw language. Today she teaches in her community at We’koqma’q Mikmaw school as the Grade 1 teacher. Tiffany is a determined individual who doesn’t let nothing get in the way of achieving something she wants. Her next goal is to return to St.FX in the near future for her PhD and become a Professor, so she can teach more about her culture. Tiffany’s most important goal in life is to be the best role model for her children and teach them that anything is possible!

Description of Degree Hoods All hoods for earned degrees at this university follow the approved design and colour coding of the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume. This guarantees uniqueness of design and colour arrangement for the academic hoods of each university.

For purposes of academic regalia, the university colours are described as Yale blue and white, and they are used in identical fashion in the hoods for all earned degrees. That is to say, the lining for hoods are all the same and serve to identify the university rather than any particular degree. This lining, therefore, is blue divided by a chevron of white.

The binding or edging of the hood is of velvet, two inches wide for all bachelor’s degrees and three inches wide for all master’s degrees and five inches for PhD. The academic discipline is recognizable from the colour of this velvet binding or trim.

Degree candidates will wear gowns and the hood of the degree to be received. Colours of the lining of the hood are exposed over the left shoulder, velvet trim and black shell on the right shoulder.

Diploma candidates will wear collars. If candidate also has a degree, the colours of that degree should be worn.
