WPB men take on Movember!

GET used to the images above, for soon they will start to become a reality as the male members of our team are taking on Movember! For those not familiar with the concept, during November each year, the Movember movement is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world, the aim of which is to raise

vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

Once registered, each ‘Mo Bro’ must begin on the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face and for the entire month, grow and groom a moustache while gaining sponsorship for their efforts. In 2011, the movement raised a staggering £79million. If you’re interested in sponsoring our team’s efforts, please ask at reception or email info@WPBPhysio.co.uk!

Physio tips!

UNFORTUNATELY it’s that time of the year again when it’s cold, dark and worst of all SLIPPERY! Already, I have seen a few patients who have lost their footing on slippery outdoor surfaces, such as algae covered paving slabs or decking. The worst offenders seem to be females, young and old, due to the type of footwear ladies tend to wear. An interesting article in the Journal of Rehabilitation, Research & Redevelopment suggests as a fall prevention strategy, middle aged/older people should wear low heels and a firm slipresistant sole with tread outside the home. This goes for younger females and yes, men as well. Please try and choose the appropriate footwear for the time of year and task you are doing. But beware, when it starts getting icy, even the best walking shoe in the world may not save you, so if in doubt, don’t go out! Or try a pair of ‘Mighty Ice Grips’, which provide very effective traction for flat shoes on ice and packed snow, they even a pair for high heels! David Bradbrook

County Clinic set for official launch IT may have been 18 months since the main building work was completed, but the County Clinic and WPB reception are set for their official openings next month. London 2012 Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford is scheduled to cut the ribbon on the building at a press-launch on November 26th. Combining years of expertise in surgical care, medical care and physiotherapy, the partnership between the two clinics will deliver a centre of excellence that Northamptonshire can be truly proud of.

Duo shine at London 2012

WPB PATIENTS Julia Bleasdale and Ava Hutchinson both did themselves proud at the London 2012 Olympics this summer. But there was disappointment for David Webb who had to pull out through injury. Julia put in an incredible performance on Friday 10th August to finish eighth in the 5000m final in a time of 15m14.55. Julia and team-mate Joe Pavey

showed their international class as they were first home after the Ethiopians and Kenyans, who traditionally dominate the event. Ava was the second of the Irish contingent to cross the finish line in the marathon, ran in the rain. She managed a time of 2hrs37.17 and finished a highly credible 68th. Unfortunately a stress-fracture meant David had to miss the men’s event.
