After FIFA confirmed it had won the right to host the 2015 Women’s World Cup, the Canadian Soccer Association promised that leading up to the big event, the women’s national side would play a series of friendlies against marquee opposition in the host cities. Moncton has already got a ChinaCanada match; Edmonton got a South Korea-Mexico game; Vancouverites got the chance to see Canada face Mexico at BC Place. While these were important encounters at World Cup sites, they certainly didn’t have the wow factor of Canada’s friendly at Toronto’s BMO Field — a non-World Cup venue — that saw the U.S. women’s national side come to town. But, in 2014, Vancouver, Edmonton and Winnipeg will all get a chance to host the biggest women’s national sides on the planet. If you asked the average Canadian women’s soccer follower to name the three most attractive road attractions — that person would likely list off the Olympic champion United States, the World Cup holders and Olympic silver medalists from Japan and the European power, Germany. They are all part of an ambitious program of friendlies that the Canadian Soccer Association announced early in 2014, as it tries to build hype for those matches and fill the respective stadiums. Canada will face the U.S. May 8 in Winnipeg, and then take on the Germans June 18 at BC Place. On Oct. 25, the Canadians will take on Japan at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium and the teams will meet again Oct. 28 at BC Place. “It’s a great test,” said women’s national-team coach John Herdman. “Throughout 2013, that was a development year, it was an opportunity to start building the team again and looking for new talent. But, 2014, we’re a step closer, so you really have to get the tier-one teams in.” And Herdman said the doubleheader against the Japanese will be key. Canada plays its first two games of

the Women’s World Cup in Edmonton and, if Canada makes it to the semis, Commonwealth would be the host venue, too. “If you want to win a World Cup you have to beat the Japanese,” Herdman said during a junket stop at Edmonton’s City Hall as the Canadian Soccer Association announced the Japan friendlies. “You also have to beat the U.S. And bringing the Japanese to Edmonton, who knows, this could be the semi-final that we might have to play here. You never know, it might be the first game of the tournament. So we have to learn how to beat them in Canada. “This Japanese team is much different than the one of five or six years ago, when Canada was beating them comfortably. They’re a tough team and an exciting team to watch. That’s the beauty of bringing them. You get to see a brand of women’s soccer that you’re not used to seeing in North America. They’re just technically the best.” Canada opened its bronze-medal 2012 Olympic campaign against the Japanese, a 2-1 loss to the World Cup

champs in Coventry, England. Nahomi Kawasumi and Aya Miyama scored for Japan before a Melissa Tancredi effort pulled Canada to within a goal. The first of the two friendlies against Japan will be as much a test for the City of Edmonton as it is for the national teams on the field. A still-freshly renovated BC Place and a new stadium in Winnipeg are ready for the World Cup. But Commonwealth Stadium, built in the late 1970s, is a concrete example of Brutalist architecture that looks like it belongs in postcards from the old Soviet Union rather than the capital of Alberta. Work still needs to be done, from dressingroom renovations to new scoreboards. The local organizing committee is cooperating with the Canadian Football League’s Eskimos and the city’s brass in making sure the changes are made. Last year, the orange plastic seats were removed, and new green and gold seating was placed in the stadium, which holds a little less than 60,000. But, in a stadium that big, even a decent crowd looks tiny. Unless an event draws at least 45,000 fans into Commonwealth Stadium, you won’t be able to help but notice the empty seats. And that was the case in 2013, when Canada hosted South Korea on a cold October night. Herdman admitted he was disappointed that just 12,500 fans showed up to see the Koreans face the Canadians. But, there were some mitigating circumstances. The game was scheduled for the night before Halloween. Questions were raised in the Edmonton soccer community: Why wasn’t the game scheduled as a weekend matinee? This time around, the Canadian Soccer Association looks to have learned from its scheduling gaffe. The game against Japan will be on a weekend afternoon; in late October, there’s a big swing in temperature between afternoon and night, so the crowd should be boosted by warmer conditions. But, no matter if the national team plays friendlies in Edmonton, Winnipeg or Vancouver, it is clear the stakes have been raised. The best opponents that the Canadian Soccer Association could possibly hand-pick are all coming to this country in 2014. And Herdman knows it is now about managing the team. He has to transform the women’s program from a quick rebuilding project to one that’s ramping up, getting better month after month — and ready to peak when the Women’s World Cup opens at Commonwealth Stadium. “Some of it is an art and a science. You have to be really careful with the physiological preparation and the mental development of the players. But, look — 8 March/April 2014

winning is important, and getting some wins under our belts against those (elite) teams will be crucial,” he explains. “You’ve got to know going into that event (the World Cup) that you can beat those teams. So we want to play top teams this year to get a sense of where we are, of where is the gap and of how big is the gap, so we can close it.”

Anyone who has been keeping up with Toronto FC during the offseason has had plenty of news to digest, and for good reason: this year, with Tim Bezbatchenko and Tim Leiweke running the club, Toronto FC has pulled off many a masterstroke in player acquisitions. First came Gilberto, a leading striker from Brazil’s Serie A, who joined Toronto FC as a Designated Player. Then came the biggest story of the offseason: the double-blockbuster

Designated Player signings of Jermain Defoe and Michael Bradley, to the tune of a whopping $100 million over the course of the next few years. The news of Defoe and Bradley, already such huge signings,

was matched within weeks when the club picked up Brazilian international goalkeeper Julio Cesar on loan. Another loan-in was Bradley Orr, a right fullback from Blackburn who linked up with his friend Steven Caldwell, the TFC captain. On the local front, Toronto FC drafted well, picking up Nick Hagglund and Dan Lovitz and signing the two to contracts. The club also traded for All-Star left fullback Justin Morrow, F.C. Dallas’ fiery Brazilian, Jackson, and sent Matias Laba to the Vancouver Whitecaps. To wrap this busy offseason up with the best present possible, Toronto FC also re-signed hometown hero Dwayne De Rosario. “Dwayne was my old captain when I first signed,” Doneil Henry told InsideSOCCER Magazine during the

team’s media day event at the KIA Training Grounds. “Dwayne is an exceptional player, I’m happy to have him back home. Between Dwayne and Julian de Guzman, they’re probably my two favourite players on the national team.” With plenty of new faces on the team, the younger players on the squad are more than excited to get the season going. For midfielders like Jonathan Osorio and Jeremy Hall, the chance to play alongside a player like Michael Bradley is almost hard to believe at first. “It’s funny because he was here with Roma and I didn’t think anything of him coming back to MLS at any time, playing with a club like that, at a level like that and in the prime of his career,” Hall said. “I didn’t have any idea he was coming to the league but to have him is awesome, a world class player and a general in midfield.” Last season, Toronto FC marginally improved over its tumultuous 2012 season, picking up only one more win (6-17-11) but drawing more games. With added quality across the pitch, fans and players alike are expecting more wins in the 2014 season. “There’s so much potential here,” Kyle Bekker said. “I think we were waiting for someone to come and get everything together and I think we have those guys in place now. “ “We have to get used to the idea of winning,” Bekker continued. “Hopefully we can go in and know how to win.” While much of the Toronto FC core has remained in place from last season, a few new MLS regulars are raring to go with their new club. Morrow, who spent last season with the San Jose Earthquakes, sees Toronto FC as a chance at making history. “I want to be a part of the first Toronto FC team to make the playoffs,” Morrow said. “I think we have the quality here to do that. I’m hoping to bring some experience and some leadership to the team.” “I know Toronto FC has always been a club that’s committed to winning so I was excited to be a part of that and help the

team grow,” Morrow added. During the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, Toronto FC made a statement move, swapping the 16th overall pick with the Philadelphia Union to move up to spot #10 and draft Nick Hagglund from Xavier. “It was a complete surprise,” Hagglund said. “I knew Toronto was interested but I didn’t know they were that interested. I hope to live up to that, for sure.” “I’m ready to grow,” Hagglund continued. “I’m ready, if I have to step on the field, to meet that challenge. You only grow when you have challenges set before you, so I’m ready to do that.” Some players, like Julio Cesar, Defoe and Bradley, are expected to join their respective national teams (Brazil, England and the United States) for the FIFA World Cup in the summer. This means players like Joe Bendik will have a chance to practice alongside World Cup quality players. “When you look around the league, it’s such a unique opportunity and situation where you have somebody my age and Julio Cesar who still has a couple of years to play,” Bendik said. “[Julio Cesar’s] going to play in the World Cup – to learn from that is going to be incredible.” So, how will Toronto FC perform in the 2014 season? With Julio Cesar and Joe Bendik as options between the posts, goalkeeping should not be an issue for Toronto FC. Rarely do clubs in MLS have two starting quality goalkeepers and Toronto FC is certainly lucky in this case. The backline has been reinforced with Orr and Morrow on the flanks, and captain Caldwell and Henry should prove a solid twosome in central defence. Bradley and Osorio are the preferred pair in the middle of the park with Jackson on the right and Rey on the left. Up front, Defoe partners with Gilberto, who has made no secret of his desire to score 25 goals this season. Whether or not Gilberto manages to net 25 times remains to be seen, but with a starting XI like that on paper, the Reds

do look a side capable of at least making the playoffs this season. That’s the goal for Toronto FC. Anything less will be cause for extreme levels of concern. A safe prediction for the season is a third-place finish in the Eastern Conference and a spot in the MLS postseason for the squad. It will take at least 15 wins out of 34 games to do so. If ever Toronto FC needed to have a breakout year, it’s this one. With Defoe, Bradley and the rest of the new Toronto FC line up now geared up and ready to go, the 2014 season should be an entertaining one for fans of Canada’s first MLS side!

Futsal Kingston started in the fall of 2013 after partners Alex Fletcher and Phil Benevides saw the potential of FIFA’s official indoor game for the beautiful eastern Ontario city. Known for its numerous historical buildings, spectacular shipwreck diving, and home to a series of top class post-secondary institutions, Kingston is a sports-crazy city home to over 100,000 residents. After attending the Futsal Canada League Owners and Operators Conference last summer, the two decided to pull the trigger on creating a league that has seen great success in attracting top talent from Kingston and the surrounding area during the inaugural season. The league currently has 10 teams with a fall and winter division — the top teams from each play for the city championship — and a cast of 11 referees who were recently certified The duo has also been working hard with Futsal Canada to host a major National invitational event in early 12 March/April 2014

May, working in partnership with the prestigious Queens University and Tourism Kingston. More information on that will come. At the other end of Lake Ontario lies the working class city of Hamilton, which will play host to the soccer tournament at the 2015 Pan American Games. The Hamilton Futsal League was

recently given the green light by its district and will commence play in the fall of 2014. It was established by Pete Townsend, sadly not the legendary guitarist from The Who, who decided to move forward with the creation of a FIFA rules league after attending the aforementioned conference attended by Kingston’s Fletcher and Benevides.

The aim is to create an eight team men’s division that would start in November with a focus on starting two youth divisions as well as an eventually being able to offer a women’s program. Townsend hopes to setup a series of events within the city, including a tournament in the Steel City for 2015.

On the college scene A great development coming from the Prairies is the creation of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference futsal program. Built in a similar fashion to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference, the MCAC program is utilizing a three tournament series for both men’s and women’s varsity teams that will culminate with a championship event in mid-March. The five participating schools are Canadian Mennonite University, Universite de Saint-Boniface, Providence University College, Red River College, and Assiniboine Community College. It’s a massive step forward for the sport as well as a boost to collegiate athletes looking

for a highly competitive winter offering. Meanwhile two doors over, in Alberta, the ACAC continues its strong futsal competition and finishes up its championship tournament at Keyano College in Fort McMurray. The hosts headed into the final weekend of play on top of the table in the men’s division and were looking to win their second consecutive title, while the Medicine Hat Rattlers lead the women’s program ahead of last year’s champions from Lakeland College.

National Coach Jorge Braz recently led his squad to the semi-final of the UEFA Futsal Euro in Belgium. The 41 year old Braz, was actually born in Edmonton and moved with his family back to Portugal at age eight. He has seen a rapid rise in the game and is widely considered one of the top futsal coaches in the world. Though it is hard to compete with the talent and opportunities Portugal offers, many are hoping that Braz will one day make his way back to the Great White North to lead Canada to futsal glory.

The pedigree of a conference can often be assessed not just by how many attend but by how far they and the speakers are willing to travel. The University of Toronto’s National Soccer Coaching Conference certainly logged the numbers and the kilometres: This third annual event attracted almost 400 participants, another increase over the previous year. Attendees from British Columbia to Newfoundland and Thunder Bay to North Carolina braved both Toronto’s winter weather (and its equally unpredictable mayor.) While not in the same league, attendance-wise as the NSCAA Conference in Philadelphia, Toronto certainly matched it in quality of presenters while the camaraderie and more social atmosphere were seen as big plusses. There was an all-star list of speakers and they had to make serious efforts to be present: Martin Vasquez flew in, overnight, from California, direct from helping coach

the US team to victory over South Korea, while FC Edmonton head coach, Colin Miller, came all the way from Alberta. However, the long-distance award went to Dr Juan Pedro Benali, former Sporting Director of Real Racing Santander in Spain and currently running a soccer academy in Abu Dhabi! These were all in addition to Tony Fonseca, Tony Dicicco, Danny Dichio, Kristine Lilly, Marc Dos Santos, Richard Bucciarelli and Isaac Raymond. Also seen in the audience were TV commentator Dick Howard and Vanessa Martinez Lagunas, coach of the Winnipeg Bisons women’s team, both who also happen to be FIFA Instructors. Coaches enthused about the quality of the conference; the distinguished speakers, the coaching demonstrations, the pearls of wisdom imparted and the reminiscences

of the top-level participants. As Ron Smale, president of the OSA commented; “A tremendous conference. It was great to observe coaches networking and sharing best practices. Candace Chapman, still excited about her Olympic bronze medal, talked about the experience as “fun” but described the training as “hardwork,” “relentless” and “exhausting.” While acknowledging that parents are perhaps the biggest limitation to a young player’s development, they agreed that the underlying ingredient for success is dedication and perseverance by both coach and player. Similarly, improved coaching has been identified as the key to Canada’s future soccer success. Events like this and the OSA’s March 23 Coaching Conference certainly make a world of difference.

Canada’s National SPORT By Les Jones, Covershots Inc. TFC is not the first Toronto Football Club -

That honour goes to Toronto FBC, a club formed over a century before, in 1884, following a name change by the East Toronto club and when football was two words. They played ‘the kicking game’ although they may also have played rugby and were known in the vernacular not as TFC but as the ‘Torontos.’ They lost their first game to British American Business College 1–0 and also lost to Berlin High School but managed a tie with Brampton Wasps. This was a marginally better start than TFC, who lost their first four games, failing to score, but then went on to a quartet of successes in the Canadian Championship for the Voyageurs Cup and performed creditably in the CONCACAF Champions League.

The Vancouver 86ers can boast one of the most impressive unbeaten a in North American sport It was a remarkable 14-month unbeaten streak, lasting from June 7, 1988, to August 8, 1989. Following a loss to the North York Rockets, the 86ers went on a jet-propelled run of 46 games, racking up 37 wins and nine ties, before hitting the wall against the Edmonton Brick Men. Nonetheless, the team retained the CSL title that year, beating Hamilton Steelers 3–2 in front of 8,000 fans at Swangard stadium. The team was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Montreal Impact suffered one of the most heartbreaking losses in Canadian history. It was February 2009, the quarter-final of the CONCACAF Championship round. The Impact had surprised everyone with a convincing 2–0 win over Mexican 2008 Clausura champions Santos Laguna in the first leg.The second leg was probably the first soccer match ever played in Montreal in the middle of winter, and it was played indoors at the Olympic Stadium rather than at the regular home ground of Saputo Stadium. Impressively, the game attracted an Impact and CONCACAF Champions League record crowd of 55,571. Despite being outplayed by the skilful Guerreros, Montreal astounded even itself by taking a 2–1 half-time lead. With away goals counting double in the event of an aggregate tie, Montreal could afford to concede three more second half goals and still progress. At the end of regulation time they were losing the tie 3–2 but were ahead 4–3 on aggregate. Only two goals in extra time could end their dreams of an appearance in FIFA’s Club World Championship and a potential game with Barcelona! Incredibly, two goals in the final minute saw Montreal eliminated. It wasn’t the first time Montreal had given up late goals. In the opening match of Scotland’s 1927 tour of Canada, Montreal was four minutes away from a memorable and unexpected victory. However in front of a then-record crowd of some 10,000 they conceded two late goals, the winner from the penalty spot, and lost 3–2. Scotland went on to win 18 of their remaining 19 games, losing only to the Toronto All-Stars, but beating Ontario – which featured the same 11 players –10-0.

NEW TEAM? EVALUATE THEN PLAN YOUR PRE-SEASON BY DAVE KENNY In the last issue of Inside Soccer Magazine, I wrote that I would be coaching with a new, smaller club for the upcoming season. After more than twenty years affiliated with the Guelph Soccer Club, I decided to coach closer to home and agreed to take a position with Fergus-Elora and District Soccer (FEDS). An old teammate is the Technical Director with FEDS and he had been encouraging me to join his club since I moved to the community nearly four years ago. FEDS does not have the resources or facilities that Guelph has but that does not prevent the club from instituting similar programs for its players. Nor, as I was very quick to discover, does it affect the enthusiasm of the players. After a relaxing four month sabbatical, between my last game in Guelph and first session with FEDS, my personal gas tank was re-fueled. It was my first extended rest period in the past four years and it got me ready to attack my new position with vigour. Previously, winter training started a couple of weeks after the outdoor season ended. With FEDS, the winter training started during, well, the winter! After an introductory coaches’ meeting,, my first session with my new U12 team was scheduled. The temperature was colder than minus twenty Celsius outside, but fortunately, our training session was booked for the local high school gym. FEDS does not have the luxury of its own dome

and turf facility so most of its winter training sessions and winter leagues are conducted in local schools. On opening Sunday, I was pleased I would not be forced to begin my new assignment inside a cold dome. From my initial discussions with the Technical Director, Rick, it was very clear that Guelph and FEDS have both committed to the same type of programPlayer Development First and Foremost! (This is why I also accepted the position of Junior Development Officer, overseeing the u8-u10 program). The question I needed answered was “How far along was the development?” In order to properly prepare for my season and develop my action plan for player improvement, I first needed to assess the skill level of each of the players. Not only was I unaware of the talent level, but I was also unsure of how many players would even show up to our first training. After all, a new coach, unknown to all players, can be daunting to some. Guelph has a registration of around 4200 players including 30 travelling teams. FEDS, on the other hand, have 1400 players and 14 travel teams. In Guelph I would get at least 40 players to attend the winter sessions. In a small town like Fergus, other sports schedules need to be respected.

Simply put, in Fergus we do not have the numbers to be able to tell the players they need to make a choice of which sport to play. To be honest, I also do not believe players should make a choice. I like the idea of players participating in other sports, particularly in younger age groups. I strongly believe there are benefits from cross-training that the clubs running year round are missing. (Even Wayne Gretzky did not play hockey all year round). As it turns out, attendance at my first session was 11 players and another 6 who came late due to hockey commitments. Twenty or twenty-one is apparently the maximum number to expect overall, so seventeen in attendance at an initial session was not bad, especially in the middle of a snow storm. My initial evaluation involved some simple ball skills including dribbling, turns, passing and receiving. I am a big proponent of the Coerver method of coaching, which includes “ball mastery” as the first step of the training pyramid. Using some of the Coerver moves and turns, for evaluation purposes, is an excellent assessment tool. For those coaches unfamiliar with Coerver, I urge you to educate yourself by looking up the videos or attending a Coerver Clinic. (www.coerver.com) After my initial “Coever” testing, I discovered the level of my u12 group is quite varied. We have some very advanced players that will definitely lead the pack, as well as a few with some catching up to do. What I love is that all the players are keen to learn and willing to try new things. As a coach, I would rather work with players who want to learn than those who already “know it all.” Often young players are reluctant to try difficult tasks for fear of failure, especially in front of a new coach. To overcome this, I introduced the moves in slow motion which made the skills much easier to visualize and duplicate. As a result, the players were able to gain confidence and thus increase the tempo InsideSOCCER 59


in a very short period of time. Individual improvement and interest in improving, was clearly evident. After my Coerver introduction to the players, we progressed to a game scenario where players had to use one of their new found moves prior to scoring a goal. At the end of our first ninety minutes session, I could definitely see an improvement in every one of the players in attendance. That is instant gratification for me, a coach who promises parents every year that I will make their child a better player. After returning home and assessing the group as a whole, I knew where I would concentrate my attention for the balance of my twelve week winter training. Ball skills, ball skills and more ball skills would be followed by 1v1 and other small sided games. Game tactics would not be introduced until much closer to the start of the season. With my revised enthusiasm I developed practice plans, for the next six sessions, with the flexibility built in to alter sessions as skill, interest and time permits. It is important to continually evaluate the progress to ensure that the players are challenged and remain interested each and every session. This ensures the continuation of the development of the player. Now that my “technical” pre-season had been planned, in order to properly prepare for the summer, I had to let the parents know what my intentions are for the upcoming season. Playing in the u12 age group in Ontario, there are restrictions in the distance travelled for games and participation in tournaments or festivals. This has altered my normal projected seasonal adventures. I like at least one weekend away each season. I believe it not only creates a great soccer experience but it also helps life skill development as well. In order to introduce myself, talk about my goals and aspirations, I scheduled a brief parents’ meeting immediately following our first session. It is important for a new coach, in a new club, to keep the parents informed so that everyone knows what to expect and hopefully everyone will work together for the betterment of the group as a whole. After introducing myself and my “Coaches’ Code” (see below) the first question I answered was how many players would make the team. Since we 60 March/April 2014

are playing at an age where scores are not kept and standings are abolished, my answer was very simple. “I will take as many as want to come out”. We are permitted to carry up to 25 players, some of which can be assigned to the house league. I explained that my responsibility is to all the players and therefore all will have an opportunity to develop. “Ideally,” I said, “I would like to have enough players come out on a regular and consistent basis that we could field two teams but the numbers right now will not allow that to happen.” Not cutting players is a difficult concept for parents to accept, especially if they are rep hockey parents, where players have been cut since they were seven years old. How can we possibly win if we don’t put our best line up on the field? My response is simply this, the wins will come when the development occurs. My promise to parents is to improve the

Inside Soccer Magazine, releasing players is the worst part of coaching youth teams. Under the FEDS system, no player will be “cut.” Some players will train with the rep team, participate in some games and play regularly in the house league as well. This is a great way to develop players and ensure a player pool for the future, especially when we progress to 11-a-side soccer. My parent meeting also brought up the question of what should happen if there is a conflict between hockey and soccer. Years ago, hockey and soccer seasons did not conflict. Now, with spring hockey tryouts and winter soccer, there definitely is a time when there will be a conflict. My opinion on this is a bit different from many soccer coaches and Technical Directors throughout Ontario. The guidelines for player development now encourage a 10 or 11 month program. (This is emphasized in the

players NOT win games. This is going to be a unique season for me. This is my first year coaching in a league that will not keep stats and my first year playing 9 a-side. Next season, results will matter and we return to 11 a-side. As a result, I am going to use this season as an opportunity to prepare as many players as I can to be ready for the “competition” of u13. As I wrote in the previous issue of

OPDL mandate). Even in Guelph, we were encouraged not to select players who could not attend winter training. My personal policy is simple. If there is a conflict, during “hockey season”, September to March, go to hockey. During “soccer season,” which is May to September, go to soccer. I expect players to finish the sport that is in season, when there is a conflict. A coach should accept the fact that there will be players who


play multiple sports, particularly in a small town. It is not a “lack of dedication” if a player misses winter training sessions in order to fulfill other commitments. It is life skills being developed- the ability to prioritize. Just because I think children should participate in multiple sports or activities, it does not mean I do not agree that there are benefits of year round soccer training. Operating a ten or eleven month schedule means thousands of extra touches on the ball. The more often a player has a ball at his feet, the better he will become. What I am concerned about is the cost that has become associated with winter or indoor soccer. Soccer has always been seen as a “cheap” sport and one of the reasons why soccer has become the largest participation sport for Canadian children. Indoor soccer is changing that reputation. With domes and other indoor facilities popping up

all over Ontario, it is becoming difficult to fill the available space and clubs that control their own facilities are feeling the pinch. Domes are expensive to operate and are often only utilized for six or seven months a year and only for about six hours a day. The high costs of operating indoor soccer centres also puts pressure on Technical Directors to develop new programs. More programs means more rental time. More rental time equals increased revenues. As more programs are added, the cost is ultimately passed along to the players. The annual cost to play travel team soccer in Guelph is approximately $600 plus $225 for the mandatory winter sessions. That is over $800 before the season even starts. It is also before fundraising, tournaments, hotels and gasoline. By contrast, FEDS registration for a travel player is $240-345 depending on age and level of play. There

is no additional charge for indoor training as the club covers all rental fees. Guelph has a dome, FEDS use school gyms. The FEDS winter training program is watched closely by the Technical Director. Rick has put in place a futsal based program, which is ideal for player development. A futsal ball is smaller than a regular ball and is weighted to decrease bounce. As a result, the ball is at a player’s feet more often and not bouncing away. More possession means more touches. More touches mean more development. More development gets my team ready for the outdoor season. Good plan in my books!

DRILL OF THE MONTH: “FIRST TOUCH SHOT” “First Touch Shot” is a shooting drill that encourages players to gain possession and get a shot away as quickly as possible. It is the next progression following “Take The Shot” outlined in the last issue of Inside Soccer Magazine, and uses the same set up.

SET UP • Set up a 40yd long x30yd wide grid with a goalpost at each end of the length- one goalkeeper in each goal • Grid size can be altered for younger age groups • Divide the squad into 4 even teams, 4 different team colours • Keep a selection of balls inside the goals at each end

START • 2 Teams start on the field and two teams “rest” outside the field of play, each team on the field defends one of the goals and attacks the other • 1 goalkeeper starts play by throwing a ball out to a teammate

THE GAME

• Ensure proper shooting technique is used and proper body position

• Once a team gains possession of the ball, it attempts to score against the opposing ‘keeper as quickly as possible, by keeping possession until passing to a player who will shoot at goal . The player taking the shot MUST do so on his/her first touch.

VARIATIONS

• If the opposing team gains possession, it attacks the opposite end

• Have the goalkeeper add an extra ball if there are not enough shots

• If a goal is scored or a shot misses the net, the defending goalkeeper throws another ball into play, from inside his net

• Minimize the number of passes before a shot is taken

• The two teams “resting” should act as ball boys to make sure there is an adequate supply of balls at all times • The game continues for a set time period (suggest 5 minutes) and then teams 3 and 4 enter the field and teams 1 and 2 rest

COACHING POINTS • Encourage players to shoot when the opportunity exists- do NOT overdribble

• Encourage players to be vocal. Players should call for the ball and give teammates information i.e. “Man-On” or “Shoot”

• Alter the number of players per team or time of game

WHY THIS WORKS • Players love shooting drills • Players learn to shoot with minimal touches • Players learn to properly position their body for first time shots • Players learn quick transition from defending to attacking and back to defending • Communication improves

• Have players move to space to receive passes and gain space for a shot 5 February/March 2012

The Golden Boot: Luis Suarez There is simply no forward more in form than Luis Suarez is for Liverpool. That goal scoring touch will translate smoothly with Uruguay, making Suarez a safe bet for at least four or five goals. Is that enough to take the top scorer’s title? Certainly! Last time around, Thomas Müller took the title but he, too, only scored five goals and notched three assists. Suarez is in the prime of his career playing South American football in South America, in a Brazilian climate that is favourable to Uruguay and not so favourable to European sides. In the 2014 FIFA World Cup, no forward is more capable of scoring goals in bunches than Luis Suarez.

Group Stage Upset: England Call it the group of death if you’d like, and you’d be right, since both England and Italy face stiff competition in Group D. Costa Rica should be a walk in the park for the two, but Uruguay most certainly won’t be. I’m throwing my hat in the Uruguayan ring and will comfortably predict that Diego Forlan and co. will move on to the next round, leaving one of Italy or England on the outs. Who will it be? Well, Italy was knocked out early in the last World Cup and has learned its lesson, but England’s aging side coupled with inexperienced young internationals makes them the most vulnerable for a group stage upset.

World Cup Runner Up: Brazil Yes! This is the boldest prediction in the list. Brazil is a heavy favourite for the World Cup, having beaten Spain in the Confederations Cup and proving itself under Luiz Felipe Scolari. With goalkeeper Julio Cesar, and wingers Oscar and Neymar, Brazil is a side that should cruise to the final. The only team that can beat them is Germany, but despite their strength, this final requires Portugal to top Group G so that Brazil can meet Germany in the final and not in the semi-finals. A BrazilGermany final would be a treat to watch but ultimately, it’s tough seeing Brazil actually win the title at home.’

TOP10 WORLD CUP By Armen Bedakian

The Dark Horse: Belgium Though Germany, Spain and Brazil will be favourites for the tournament, one team that should be fun to watch is Belgium. This is a dark horse team through and through, filled from top to bottom with quality players. You don’t need to look far to find talent young and old in Belgium. Between Vincent Kompany, Romelu Lukaku, Marouane Fellaini and Eden Hazard, Belgium is a strong team that could just surprise a few people this time around.

The Golden Glove: Manuel Neuer The predication for best goalkeeper is made easy when taking into account the pure level of quality that Manuel Neuer has for Germany. He is an elite goalkeeper in every meaning of the word. Sure, he’ll face competition in the form of Spain’s Iker Casillas (who hasn’t featured as much with Real Madrid these days) and Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon (aging well but nearing his final playing days). Still, when it comes to goalkeeper prowess, Neuer stands alone.

The Golden Ball: Neymar Regardless of whether or not Brazil wins the World Cup, the Golden Ball is certainly Neymar’s to lose. He’s going into the tournament with the weight of a nation on his shoulders and the eyes of the world on his back. Those expectations have never fazed the Brazilian maestro before, and on the grand stage, Neymar’s swagger and confidence will translate well. The Golden Ball is given to the tournament M.V.P. and if Brazil shows in the tournament, it most certainly will be because of Neymar’s skill and quality.

World Cup Winners: Germany Like Bayern Munich, Germany is the best team in the world who somehow didn’t win the major international tournament they should have won. Or so the sentiment goes, after finishing just shy of a final spot in the last World Cup. From roster spots 1 to 23, Germany is filled with class and quality, a World Cup champion quality side.

Best Young Player: Mario Götze He is, by far, the best young player in the tournament. Götze possesses the kind of quality in his first touch that comes around once or twice a generation. His vision and goal scoring ability is matched by his intelligence and chance creation. He is a complete footballer already for Bayern Munich and for Germany. The best young player award is given to players 21 and younger, and while Götze will turn 22 in June, the tournament organizers will surely shoe him in. If not, the award might go to France’s Paul Pogba, who remains young enough to qualify.


Repeating Champions: Nope YFor the better part of the last 12 years, Spain has dominated the world of football. La Furia Roja won the UEFA Euro Cup in 2008, before winning the FIFA World Cup in 2010, and then doubling on the Euro Cup in 2012. Spain then went to the Confederations Cup where Brazil deservedly triumphed. It seems the days of Spanish rule is coming to an end – Xavi and Andres Iniesta are not getting any younger. Up top, neither Fernando Torres nor Roberto Soldado are in superb form, though David Villa and Diego Costa certainly are. In Brazil, Spain will have a tough go of things and it would be difficult to imagine Casillas hoisting the World Cup once again.

Breakout Star: Eden Hazard One player who will enjoy a breakout World Cup is Eden Hazard. The Belgian winger has been in superb form for Chelsea. He is probably one of the top five footballers in the world right now and just needs an international stage on which to show it off. Chelsea is, of course, a huge side and his talents haven’t gone unnoticed, but Hazard is not a name on the same level of Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi just yet. But it soon will be. This World Cup is Hazard’s chance to shine, and shine he will.

After Canada was eliminated from the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup, coach Stephen Hart chose to fall on the sword, handing in his resignation papers. He was replaced at the helm of the Canadian men’s national team by Colin Miller, who was allowed to take time off from his duties with FC Edmonton to be the interim coach of the men in red. The line of succession saw Hart move over and Miller take the crown before the Canadian Soccer Association finally appointed a new coach — Benito Floro — in the summer of 2013. There weren’t many people who felt worse for Hart than did Miller, who maintained that the 8-1 loss to Honduras, which did in Canada’s hopes for Brazil 2014, was an “aberration” and that the players let Hart down on that awful afternoon in Central America. Hart, now the coach of the Trinidad and Tobago men’s national team, remains a friend of Miller’s. And, the Eddies had great success with Trinidad and Tobago international Carlyle Mitchell; he was a standout defender for FCE through the first half of the 2013 season, after he arrived in the Alberta capital on loan from the Vancouver Whitecaps. But an injury crisis forced the 64 March/April 2014

Whitecaps to recall Mitchell last summer, even though the plan was for him to stay in the NASL for a full season. Mitchell played so well when he got back to Vancouver, he was never sent back to the Eddies. Fast forward to 2014: Mitchell and Hart were keys to FC Edmonton making one of its most important off-season signings. They both worked on Miller, convincing the FC Edmonton boss that T&T international Kareem Moses was set for a move to the NASL — and that the Alberta capital would be the perfect fit. “Carlyle Mitchell was here last season and he and Colin still have a very good relationship,” said Moses, after an FC Edmonton preseason training session in the cozy indoor confines of the Commonwealth Fieldhouse. “Colin talked to Carlyle about a centre back and Carlyle said I might be a good fit, (since) I played with him on the Trinidad and Tobago team. I sent a video of highlights to Colin, and we set something up. He came down to see one of my games and then

he told me he was interested in bringing me on board.” Moses made the move from his domestic club, North East Stars, to FC Edmonton. But he also has CONCACAF Champions League experience, having played in that competition as a member of Joe Public FC. The deal came after Miller’s visit to the Caribbean, where he met with Hart to discuss Moses. There is a bit of irony, here; when Hart was the head coach of the national side, he never called up an FC Edmonton player; his only dips in the NASL pool of Canadian talent came when he made the decision to bring Ali Gerba, then of the NASL’s Montreal Impact, to the 2011 Gold Cup. So maybe to the outsider it is a bit surprising that Hart would become such an enthusiastic booster of FC Edmonton as a place for his T&T players to find work. That’s right, players, not player. Not only did Hart provide a lot of positive feedback about the defender, there were suggestions of other players who could help out FC Edmonton in the future. After seeing the talent firsthand, Miller was convinced; he believes that Trinidad and Tobago is a region that has plenty of undiscovered players, and he hinted there may be more T&T trialists or signings in the future. Moses believes his country could produce many more players for NASL and MLS.

“It does have a lot of good talent, but it’s hard for the players to get found,” he explained. “We have a lot of really good young stars, actually. But we’re a thirdworld country, so we don’t get a lot of scouts, and it’s so hard for our players to get noticed.” But, Moses admitted that adapting to life with a Canadian club won’t be easy. When he arrived in Edmonton, he was greeted with -20 C temperatures and hiphigh snowbanks. And while FC Edmonton held the first month of its preseason in the great indoors, Moses knows that April and May games will be played in a climate that’s a lot colder than what he’s used to. He’s already got advice on how to stay warm from both Mitchell and FC Edmonton left back, Lance Laing, a Jamaican international. Laing joined FC Edmonton in 2013, from the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. A Jamaican who played a significant chunk of his pro career in south Florida, Laing had to adapt quickly. In fact, the Edmonton Supporters’ Group created a meme entitled “Cold Lance Laing is Cold.” The series featured Laing’s head Photoshopped into a variety of winter scenes. And, Laing made the decision not to go home after the FC Edmonton season was done. He chose to stick out an Alberta winter. Heck, there are many Albertans who don’t try to stick out a whole winter, taking off for Arizona, Hawaii, southern California or Mexico to break up the dreary season.

Laing played the final home game of FC Edmonton’s season — a win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies — in subzero temperatures and snow. So, what did Laing and Mitchell tell Moses? In cold-weather games, never stop moving your feet. “There are so many things I have to get used to,” said Moses. “I am so used to playing in the heat, now I have to get used to playing in the cold. But this is the life I have chosen. I have to be a good professional, which means that I have to adapt. “Carlyle also spoke to me about the conditions. And the one adjustment you have to make is to always keep yourself warm. You have to wear whatever they provide to you, the Under Armour, the jackets. When you play in the heat, you are warm when you go out on the field, and you stay warm when you are out there. But here, you need to work on staying warm so you don’t get injured. You have to continue to move. When you are on the backline, even when the ball isn’t near you, you have to keep your feet moving.” If Moses adapts, the Edmonton Supporters’ Group may need to launch a “Cold Kareem Moses is Cold” meme.
