frankie.webb@chronicle.co.nz Residents in the Hinemoa and surrounding streets are really ‘pissed’ by the theft of community lawn mowers, which have been a huge asset to the area. Taiapo Rangihaeata who had a mower booked for last weekend said: “Now I have failed a Housing Corp inspection because my lawns need mowing.” The grandmother and Hinemoa Street resident told the Horowhenua Chronicle: “People used to throw bottles and rubbish on the lawns of people who didn’t have mowers because the grass would hide it. This place has changed since those mowers were available, the street is clean, it looks so good.” The mowers had been an initiative of Constable Fiona Barker following a big community clean-up in Hinemoa Street and Morgan Crescent two years ago. Information received by Police indicate the mowers were taken by locals. If that’s the case then “it’s really disappointing that someone in the community could take from their own,” Constable Barker said. “A simple thing like having a lawnmower has given a small community in the south east of Levin an incentive to continue the good work started two years ago. No one has the right to take that away.” The local community united, and with help from a range of organisations there was a real sense of community pride being created in the area and the shared community mowers were certainly helping to keep it that way. “Those mowers were booked up five days a week, every weekend, no exception,” Perry Rackley from Hinemoa House said. “I

believe the people who took those mowers knew how important they were to this community — their community.” Both
mowers were almost new, one had a fault which a local retired mower mechanic was coming to fix this week.
Perry praises locals who have given information to Police. The offenders may think their heist went without a hitch, but they could be in for a surprise. “We received some useful information, I know there’s more out there and appeal to anyone with information to call into Hinemoa House, the Levin Police station or anonymously leave a message on the Crimeline (Ph 0800 555 111)
