01 [ SYN ] LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE : A BIOLOGY CLASSLAB PROPOSAL

( prefix) - with or together SYNERGY: the interaction or cooperation of two or more components to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.

Since the dawn of consciousness man has sought to harness the power of the natural world, and the very act of doing so is what distinguishes humans from all other known life - also known as “original sin” or “mans fall from grace”.

SYNTROPY: the tendency towards energy concentration, order, organization and life

Our design proposal, however, argues for design to function as the mechanism which knits together the fabrics of man and nature to form a symbiotic matrix yielding net positive feedback loops.

The mission of the LBC is to promote the way of life of the future which is possible through a relearned syntropic relationship between ourselves ourselves and the synthesis (self-organization / evolution) that makes all life possible. We aim to achieve this goal through our design philosophy and application.

The main overlaps between our personal inspirations involved the notion of gestalt (in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts) as witnessed in nature and the works of Alvaro Siza is evident in Siza’s contextual strategy balancing stark simplicity with rich complexity. The natural world abounds with examples of symbiotic relationships (lichen is a composite organism arising from algae and/ or cyanobacteria living symbiotically among fungi filaments - properties of the combined organism are much different than the individual organisms), and the ratio of human genes to microbial genes in one’s body is 1 : 360.

We aim to form a symbiotic relationship between the built and natural worlds resulting in a composite organism that functions more efficiently than either components would individually.

Our design process began with an understanding of the balance between the human and non-human forces present on-site. In this way, the systems and formal approaches developed alongside one another, symbiotically.

Our investigation, like that of the other teams, began with formulating our system of core values and a critical lens to help us focus to the larger problem and issues of the competition. In our case, the top five key values are, starting with the most important:

The existing landscape ecology systems and the human settlement systems were observed in terms of their ‘resilience’ (or lack thereof) and the crucial issues associated with each were brought to the forefront. The accessibility to resources is a major issue for the people living in this area, so a strategy was developed which uses architectural and site systems to engage the limited supply of these resources so as to provide for a more long-term sustainability. Another aspect of the project site that needed attention is communal growth. To address this, a parcel system which uses private spaces publicly and a large boardwalk with a network of pathways to revive the Latin American tradition of the ‘paseo were designed’. This allows for a greater communal network and inscribes the residents with a framework for a healthy lifestyle. When challenged with the task of creating a ‘resilient’ housing module, we looked at existing prefabricated homes and worked to adapt them to our specific needs. An elevated floor plane is used to keep flood damage to a minimum, but when accompanied by the masonry block foundations, they also react to the seismic events which are so common near the San Andreas fault. Our system also needed to respond to the harsh temperatures of the region, so we implemented passive cooling techniques within each individual module. Some of these techniques include cross-ventilation and a solar shading system. Finally, the cost effective SIPS panel construction allows for users to very easily build their own homes.

The majority of the workers in the Coachella Valley are migrants from Mexico. All are seeking a better life or the American Dream. This is what they hope to achieve, but in both an individual and a collective sense. The Breaking New Ground housing project may be framed around the double dialectical diagram of success vs. identity. The project must support the sense of self-actualization and belonging that these workers strive for. Without it, insecurity and revolt may occur among the people.

We understand that site design and housing design are interdependent in terms of their possible impacts on resilience, and critically understand ourselves to be designing resiliences as much through processes as through things, with governance and stakeholder participation being a major part of this.

The 5 key values to my design process are: Performance and Functionality, Site Context and History, Conceptual Communication, Social and Political Impact, and Aesthetic for users.

By developing a parti which revisits the history of the site, the preexisting infrastructure and context is revived and given new purpose.

When appoacing the challnge to design a fire station in Savannah, I first chose to isolate 3 vital issues which I felt I needed to address. The issues I chose to work with are: restitution, elasticity, and sustainability. I operate on the idea of elasticity by designing a resilient space, that is, capable of responding to incoming change and disturbance. I address the issue of restitution by acknowledging the existing historic urban fabric and implementing a formal configuration which responds to that urban fabric. To develop a principle of sustainability, I propose to orient the building to make the most of solar exposure and to design a training tower which works in tandem with the principles of a thermal chimney, which can heat and cool the station without mechanical intervention

04 SPLICE A SMART TEXTILE FACTORY FOR MAKERS AND CONSUMERS

SPLICE: join or connect (a rope or ropes) by interweaving the strands.

This diagram represents all of the various processes and actions working together to create a machine that is seemingly both organic and machinic. Ideally, all of these components are working together to create a whole that, when considered, can be seen as greater than the sum of its parts.

When confronting the challenge of developing a textile factory in Ghana, our team felt it was important to first outline several parameters under which we would operate. Firstly, we feel it is imperative that our proposal works to serve the people of Ghana at the maximum capacity possible. This includes the social, economic, and cultural realms. We seek to accomplish this goal by first researching the agricultural exports of the region and developing an infrastructure which is capable of locally sourcing and processing the product into the final stages of its production.

In the endeavors of producing, processing and manufacturing raw materials, the systems involed in such task should stay true to their purpose while maintaning efficiency and cost effectiveness. Understanding the textile production process, the internal systems can be grouped intoo three main “processors�. We seek to accomplish a system that is both exquisite to work with, and self explainatory for outsiders who wish to educat themselves in the realms of Kente weavings. The final outcome of this entire system is a singulariity that resem bles an organism, where the entire weaving process mimics a biological cycle of any sort.

Cotton production expanded rapidly in the early and mid-1970s, reaching 24,000 tons in 1977, but it fell back to one-third of this figure in 1989. Since the reorganization of the Ghana Cotton Development Board into the Ghana Cotton Company, cotton production steadily increased from 4 percent of the country’s national requirement to 50 percent in 1990. Between 1986 and 1989, Ghana saved US$6 million through local lint cotton production.

splice One of the most sumptuously colored textiles used for clothing is Ghanaian kente cloth, made by Asante and Ewe weavers using specially designed looms. Kente was probably introduced from the western Sudan during the 16th century, when heavy, elaborate, labor-intensive versions of this fabric were designed for wealthy tribal chiefs and simpler designs became available for the general citizenry. Kente is woven in four-inch (9.5 cm) narrow strips that are sewn together. A characteristic Asante kente has geometric shapes woven in bright colors along the entire length of the strip, while Ewe kente often displays a tweed effect by plying together different colored threads in many of the warps. Ewe kente may also incorporate pictorial symbols.

The site we are looking at is the place of a former children’s park for the city. The park is currently in a state of complete deterioration. It is overgrown, unkept, and fully underutilized. Our proposal seeks to restore the park dynamic to this area. The building form acts on the regulating lines of the adjacent buildings. Dirt that is excavated is used again as berms to support the building mass as well as to provide a playful experience to the users.

05 Apex MULTI-SKYSCRAPER

As is common knowledge the skyscraper evolved from a combination of diverse factors: the invention of the safety elevator; steel frame construction techniques; and, as important, the increasing power of corporate capital. The image of Manhattan as a three-dimensional graph of land and property values is one of the icons of the twentieth century. What is less well-known, however, is that in Europe from very early on the skyscraper haunted the dreams of revolutionary minds. El Lissitzky’s Wolkenbügel (“Sky Hook”, 1924), for instance, was meant as what we can only call a horizontal skyscraper: a constructivist structure lifting itself from the ground to occupy the sky with a massive, horizontal cantilever, freeing itself from bourgeois life down below. Similarly, there are the fantasies of Yona Friedman in the 1960s who extended this horizontality into extensive systems of bridges. Not intended as the privileged spaces of companies and their headquarters, they were envisioned as a city in the sky, as a network of verticals and horizontals.

From the Brief:

The studio will start by researching networking techniques based on various operations such as branching, webbing, bridging, and networking that allow for a strategic weighing of the contribution of verticals, horizontals and diagonals to the structure, depending on the choice of site. Students will be using a mixture of analogue and digital techniques to develop these systems while working in pairs: physical model making alternated with diagramming and scripting. The students will advance through a constant going back and forth between research and design, testing ideas against various parameters such as site, structure and program. Our main question will be: can the three-dimensional network be more than architecture? Can it be a three-dimensional urbanism? NB.

The studio is sponsored by ThyssenKrupp, a company that developed the MULTI elevator system allowing cabins to move both vertically as well as horizontally. The extra budget will enable us to build large-scale physical models and bundle our efforts into a small booklet.
