The Tagore Lore

Tagore has always invoked a sense of awe for me as that it reminds me of the Indian polymath and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore [0]. It is also wonderful that the roads around that area that is part of the Teachers Estate are all named after literary great poets as Tagore, Munshi Abdullah1 [1 ], Li Po[2], Tu Fu[3], and Iqbal [4].

The run that was organized at the Tagore Drive by Condom and Karanguni was in many ways a great poetic dance with nature. We started the run by crossing over to a steep incline that brought the pack to an open track that led to a T-check. On backtracking, we found our way into the thick growth that expresses the trails of a early struggle of finding one's way through life.

Before long,we exited the forest and were back on the open track that slowly lead us down to the brook that was emptying the waters that were captured in the forest from whence we got out of.

The ground was a nice mixture of moisture (and copious amounts of it) and vegetation that offered what is joy to the hearts of hashmen - shiggy in it's full glory.

That brook went on for a while until it drained into the drainage below the Seletar Expressway.

How fitting it is for the Seletar HHH to be tickling the underbelly of the SLE.

Off-trail terrain popular in hashing, typically consisting of brush, brambles, mud, and stream crossings.

The exit of the drainage brought the pack smack into a filthy, garbage choked sorry excuse of a brook. It is a pity that we have such filth in the drainage system, and we must do all we can to eliminate this scourge.

Navigating this stretch was clearly lots of fun and I must say it was the highlight of the run. There were really soft and sinky portions, but the long grasses certainly helped with keeping ones balance and not having to take an unexpected dive.

Before long, we reached the end of that watery trek to get back on to the dry, boring road. That trek continued to the side of canal that drains into the Lower Seletar Reservoir. It was a good straight stretch to help dry out the shoes. I could see the run site from afar, but the hares, in keep with the poetic twists of great poems, decided to take a detour and went through part of Teachers Estate and brought us to a most welcome drink stop hosted by the hares. I did not spend too much time at the drink stop as it was getting darker and I did not have by trusty flash light with me.

I got quickly underway and the trail soon ended up in yet another brook and a final wetting of the shoes / feet before finally getting up a steep and slippery slope on to Tagore road and thence on to home.

It was a great run, has all the hallmarks of a Run Of The Year, except that the hares are not regulars.

Their saving grace was their collie/consultant, Sticky Tissue, who did a spendid job in helping guide the hares.

I am sure the poets of yore would have written a great rhyme in praise of the run, but this report is my humble contribution.

This run brought back great memories of past wet runs as the last time we ran through so much water was the Chinamen Run 201 2 in nearby Springleaf.

Also, for the first time in over a year, I had to use a torchlight as this was a long and difficult run.

Only negatives ... It could be shorten by avoiding the extra loop after Lentor ( First runner exceeded 75 minutes ) and the drink stop stall closed too early.

SELETAR LOVE NEST

FUK FUK TUT TUT - was seen lifting his shorts when crossing the water obstacle.

WOODSTOCK - was seen falling in the water obstacle.

LOST COCK - was seen holding his handphone over his head while crossing the water obstacle.

STRAIGHT SPOUT - was caught washing his hands with beer, after the run.

STRAIGHT SPOUT was also asked how got his name.

He explained that when in Lim Chu Kang, running through vegetable farms with water spouts ejecting water all over the place, he was caught trying to cup some water to drink.

RUN 1959 14 JUNE 2016

Close to 50 members came for this special run organized by '59 babies GHANDU*, KRETAPI, NEVER COME* and OILY COCK... ( * OFFICIAL HARES ) ... and for many of us, it's hashing on virgin grounds, at a location, we have never been before.

As this is an orchid farm, it was appropriate that the run starts off in the nursery, where we quickly hit a T-Check.

We had to search rows of cultivated orchid hybrids before finally finding the arrow which led us out of the farm and into a drain.

There were some who chose not to enter the drain, wandering off, hoping for a short cut to a drink stop.

The drain's exit wasn't far and it quickly led to a drink stop.

1 5 minutes on the run, this must be the earliest hash drink stop set up, but who is complaining ?

After the punch (alcohol bit weak, but OK as we needed to run), we went on the side of a drain, off Lim Chu Kang Lane 6C, when there was another T-Check. Despite being fully sober, we could not find any clues (hare claimed paper must have been removed by a rival orchid farm).

Fortunately, SKINNY by instinct (and he knows his ABCs) took off by himself and ran down Lane 6D. After 300m of running without any clues, with the whole pack following him blindly, SKINNY spotted KRETAPI's car.... we (or rather the hares) were saved !

We found the OILY 'beer on tap' stop, where we were also given a jungle hat as souvenir.

The jungle hat was a great gift as we soon entered a jungle and it soon started to rain.

We spent some time in the shiggy jungle before the exit at Lane 6F (A,B & E missing).

Here there was a another drink stop with more alcohol added.

The way home was via a short cut to Lim Chu Kang Lane 6.

With the multiple drink stops, it was an enjoyable run and we could even get used to the smells of Lim Chu Kang.

All set for a great evening

It was a relatively short run of 5.5 km and even with the multiple drink stops, FRBs could return in slightly over an hour.

As it was a potential ROTY and we appreciated the efforts put in by the hares, we accepted their explanation of the missing clues after the T-Check ( rival orchid farm sabo them by removing paper ).

Many of our younger members, being city boys, are not familiar with ulu kang.

They behaved badly.

They stumble on many jungle creatures on their run and never break checks.

As HASH WHISPERER recorded very little, except " GOOD RUN, GOOD JOB , ROTY ", I will give a summary of the positive & negative aspects of the run.

LOCATION

Some complained that the run site was inaccessible via public transport and others who drove had difficulty reaching without GPS coordinates.

The run site was reclaimed at the time of our birth as the East Coast Reclamation started in Bedok in 1 966 and completed in Tg Rhu in 1 986. Carpark was free, there was privacy, nice breeze and a great view.

MARKINGS

Using biodegradable toilet paper only was good and useful to pick-up Sol's poop.

However, on the home trail in the park, clues were missing or paper removed

by NParks. Helpful if Chalk was used here.

RUN

It was a good run as the hares did a great job for a run in this area. They managed to make full use of whatever shiggy and forested grounds they could find. What it lacks was a drink stop and instead we were given T-Shirts halfway on the run. Thirsty, we had to complete the 2nd half of the run carrying our T-Shirt home.

VERDICT

Overall, as positive feedback overwhelmed the negatives, it was declared a GOOD RUN .

RUN 1962 28 JUNE 2016 DEMPSEY HILL

From the carpark near Saint George's Church, the trail led us to Holland Road, before crossing over to the new Tyersall Avenue.

This new Tyersall Avenue was opened only in January this year, after the Botanic Gardens was expanded by taking over a 9.8ha plot of state land across the old Tyersall Avenue. It was lucky that even after the expansion, there were still some 'jungle' left for our hashing pleasure.

Following clues including this pontianak banana tree, we were led to a spooky deserted mansion.

If the run was done in the reverse direction, the slow ones could have ended here in the dark and perhaps get an 'Out-of-this-world' experience.

As it was still early, the hares could have laid some paper inside Woodneuk for members to explore or even set up a drink stop, so we may enjoy some ' Nikka spirit '.

This majestic mansion was built by Sultan Abu Bakar in 1 890 and it seems that the thick overgrown vegetated land surrounding it, still belongs to the Sultan of Johor ( probably why it could not be included in the Botanic Gardens expansion ).

Exiting at Holland road, publicity seeking members got distracted and posed for photos ... Did the hares led us to tresspass onto forbidden premises ?

From Holland Road, we went to Queensway, then crossed over to go up Holland Hill.

Going up to the end of Holland Hill, the trail like previous runs in this vacinity, decended down to the Commonwealth Crescent area and to the Hakka Cemetery ( another photo taking opportunity ).

Nearby the hip and bustling Holland Village and in the middle of HDB flats, lies a cemetery with nearly 3,000 graves.

Hares are fond of setting runs through here, as sooner or later, development will force this Hakka Cemetery to close.

Crossing back Queensway, we made our way back to Dempsey Hill passing this familiar landmark. We had many runs in Dempsey and never a Durian Stop ! ( Hint, Hint, Wink. Wink )

The run was 7.6 km and would take a runner around an hour to complete if they do not stop too many times for photographs and selfies or get distracted by Mountain Cats and divert to the durian stall.

If this report is accurate ( Had to scribe although I could not make it for this great run ), I hope the hares will give me their unusual, rarely seen brown color, SHHH souvenir T-Shirt ( XL SIZE please... Hint, Hint, Wink, Wink ).

The hares pledged ONE BLACK & ONE WHITE and later, SLAPPER was iced for posting photos on the run.
