MIKE BERNARD, RI

Born in 1957, Mike Bernard studied at West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham, followed by postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy Schools.

Mike Bernard’s work has been shown at the Royal Festival Hall and he has exhibited widely in London and the provinces. He has won many awards including the Stowells Trophy, the Elizabeth Greenshields Fellowship, the Silver Longboat Award and the Laing Award. In 1999 at the R.I. Exhibition at the Mall Galleries he was awarded the Kingsmead Gallery Award. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1997.

His paintings portray a great sense of mystery, perhaps because he finds the painting of every picture an adventure and experimental journey through colour, shape and mark. He paints in almost any medium –acrylic, collage, pen and ink, watercolour or oil and often a combination of all these is used to achieve his end result. His unusual use of such adventurous techniques and mediums give spark, texture and life to his semiabstract landscapes, seascapes, street scenes, still life and figurative compositions.

‘Collage has become an essential component of my work, the spontaneous and unpredictable results hopefully keep my work fresh’ he says.

HARRY BRIOCHE

Born in the Seychelles in 1965, Harry Brioche’s early life was shaped by island adventures until political upheaval forced his family to relocate to England in 1980. A self-taught artist, he pursued a career in illustration and graphic design, working with major brands like Dr Martens and Coca-Cola before focusing on fine art.

From a young age, Harry was captivated by the drama and beauty of the British landscape, its idyllic shores, and the ever-changing atmospheric sky. This endless source of inspiration drives his desire to capture and share the beauty and poetry of a moment. His objective is to convey the atmosphere and ‘spirit’ of a place through his art, with mood and light becoming the central themes of his paintings. His paintings are held in private and corporate collections worldwide and regularly feature in exhibitions, including at London’s Mall Galleries.

Harry Brioche’s journey from the serene landscapes of the Seychelles to the dramatic vistas of the British countryside is a testament to his artistic vision and dedication. His work continues to inspire and captivate audiences, ensuring his place among the celebrated artists of our time.

PETER KETTLE FRSA, RCA

Peter Kettle creates oil and mixed media paintings by immersing himself in landscape and considers himself a documentarian and expressive landscape artist. Each year, Peter takes on planned journeys around his native Wales and remote regions of the world; and incorporates journalistic narratives and social geography into his projects. His previous expeditions have led him on a personal journey across the desert plains of Patagonia and to the Andean Foothills to retrace the steps of the Welsh Settlers. Peter’s following project embarked on a physically challenging environmental expedition hiking to Everest Basecamp. In sub-zero temperatures, Peter collected rubbish along a 10-day hike to reuse in collage and mixed media works made en plein air at Everest. In 2023, he spent 3 weeks painting across Japan, hiking ancient pilgrimages in Hokkaido and to the summit of Mt.Fuji. With each project, he aims to celebrate the local stories, people and landscape through paintings, collage and documentary film. Most recently, he has been travelling across the Basque Country of Spain, Rioja and Andalusia.

Where the story captivates him, he will record elements and nuances of the space to rework into ambitiously scaled and expressive paintings; using paint and other media poured, rubbed and splashed onto the canvas.

Peter started his career in Wales and now lives and works in Bristol, maintaining his travels to his native Wales which remains a continual spur for his work.

He was voted in as an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and the Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA). He has featured on the BBC News and published in The Guardian and Money Week as ‘One to Watch’. His work is held in private collections internationally.
