Greetings; Alumni, Parents and Friends of the Steubenville Catholic Schools!

I wanted to take this opportunity to reach out to you and introduce myself. For those of you who do not know me, my name is Jennifer (Izzi) Parker and I am a 1990 Graduate of Steubenville Catholic Central High School. I am the new Director of Advancement for the Steubenville Catholic Schools (Catholic Central High School, Bishop Mussio Junior High, and BJKM Elementary). I also attended the former Holy Rosary Central Grade School. For those of you who do know me, you know how excited I am to fill this role and serve my alma mater!

There are great opportunities awaiting our Catholic Schools and I wanted to share some the initiatives that we would like to pursue moving forward. In order to achieve these goals, we will need the assistance of our alumni, parents and friends.

The first of those initiatives is forming a formal Alumni Association through Steubenville Catholic Central. I know we have pockets of alumni across the country who gather regularly as well as alumni who plan and organize their respective class reunions. We would love to bring all of those alumni together under a formal Alumni Association that serves as a resource for all alumni, works to keep alumni connected and up-to-date on the events, activities and initiatives of the Steubenville Catholic Schools, helps to plan and organize regional and local alumni events, and promotes the sharing and up-holding of school traditions.

The second is securing financial support to ensure that our Catholic Schools are available to educate future generations.

This means the establishment of specific funds, fiscal goals and a strategic plan to reach those goals.

• We are rebranding the Crusader Fund as the Crusader Annual Fund. This is an unrestricted fund that provides resources that can be used for a variety of reasons. Donations designated to this fund provide the greatest impact as these dollars can be used where they are most needed.

• We are revamping our Scholarship Fund and working to establish an endowed fund for scholarships. These scholarships benefit students attending our Catholic Schools as well as our CCHS graduates who are going on to continue their education at either 2-Year, 4-Year or Trade Schools.

• We are establishing a Capital Improvement Fund that will provide resources for major purchases, upgrades, and renovations to our schools. The buildings are older, so the need for upgrades and renovations is great.

• Lastly we are establishing restricted funds for The Arts, Athletics, Band, and Campus Ministry. These specific funds will allow our benefactors to invest in programs that are near and dear to their hearts.

The third is the evaluation, planning, and eventual launch of a Capital Campaign. This is an ambitious endeavor and one that is necessary to accommodate the growth of our Catholic Schools. While we are still in the evaluation and planning phases, the overall scope includes a new addition to the grade school building (the former Holy Rosary Central Grade School) and substantial renovations to both the Junior High and High Schools. So maybe you are wondering how can you help? First, fill out the included card and send it back to me. This will help me update our records, keep in contact with you and know where your interests lie. Second, call me or send me an email. I would love to talk with you about how we can best move forward. We appreciate your thoughts and ideas about how we can partner with you in advancing the vision and mission of our Catholic Schools, would love to hear stories about your experiences, and just connect with people who share our enthusiasm for our schools and for Catholic Education. Third, stop in and visit the schools. We would love to show what has changed and reminisce about how things used to be.

The Principal’s Perspective

I have been a part of what we now call Steubenville Catholic Schools since 1980 and I feel a renewed sense of hope and excitement for the future. My very first job as a teacher at Holy Rosary School gave me my first taste of Catholic Education. As a product of the New York Public School System, I treasured the opportunity to combine faith and education. All four of my children received their education in our schools and my entire career has been here. From teaching at Holy Rosary to administration at All Saints and eventually Bishop Mussio Schools, I have been blessed to be a part of the education of thousands of young people and have watched our schools weather the challenges of funding, enrollment and consolidation.

I am proud of our schools’ academic success, strong Catholic identity, competitive athletic programs, vibrant fine arts and the dedication of exceptional educators. I am especially proud of our renewed commitment to growth and system wide strategic planning. This process began with the help of over fifty alumni, parents and community stakeholders. Bishop Mussio Elementary School is almost full and we are excited about the possibility of expanding our building! Strong schools begin with a strong foundation so this expansion is near and dear to my heart.

The shared campus of CCHS and Bishop Mussio Jr. High has seen many improvements and updates and we continue to look at the building needs especially an update to our heating and A/C system. Our beautifully renovated Lanman Hall could enjoy year round usage with the addition of air conditioning. As a school system we are addressing security needs as well in both of our buildings. With a common mission and vision statement we are planning for the future growth and sustainability of our schools. Stay tuned for updates in the near future as we present the plan and seek the input of our stakeholders. With Courage, Character, Heart and Spirit we will continue to provide a strong faith filled education to the students of Bishop Mussio Schools and Catholic Central High School.

Principal Thomas J. Costello The Steubenville Catholic Schools which comprises Bishop John King Mussio Elementary School and Junior High as well as Catholic Central High School all work together for the overall success of our students. The BJKM Elementary school and Junior High serve as a solid foundation in faith, academics, and virtues to prepare our students for success at the high school level. The administrations of the schools collaborate together to make Steubenville Catholic Schools the best it can be.

Catholic Central High School (CCHS) is a great high school with a long history and tradition of excellence in academics, faith experiences, and athletics. The building that houses CCHS saw its first graduating class in 1950.

Since then, things have changed...to say the least. Air conditioning has been added to each individual classroom.

Electrical power has been added to many classrooms to provide for extra needs. There are two fully functional computer labs with additional stations in the Library. Many classrooms have replaced their chalkboards with white boards. Most all classrooms have a SmartBoard or SmartTV as part of their technology package. There are additional laptop charts and iPad charts that are shared between teachers. We have changed and improved with the times in many areas. There is still more to go!

With all of these improvements, there is still a need to continue to change and improve with the times. Catholic Central is looking to add a STREAM Lab (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Math) and associated curriculum. This would necessitate the purchasing of state-of-the-art equipment and a qualified teacher. Secondly, the student lockers are the original to the school. They are too small to handle the books and backpacks of today’s students and they are not our school colors. Many lockers are broken and their parts are hard to come by now. I recommend larger lockers which are blue/gold for our school. Thirdly, Lanman Hall was renovated within the last ten years and is a wonderful venue for many events, programs, assemblies, and plays. The only two downsides are the lack of Air Conditioning and the lack of LED lights. The lack of AC prohibits us from using Lanman Hall during the hot weather. The lights (incandescent) often burn out and are expensive to replace (which we must do twice a year). Forth, it would be of great value to add a cardio room to our school that has treadmills, elliptical machines, and stairclimbers. These could be used by our faculty/staff/ and community, not to mention our students.

Finally, although our school has existed since 1950 without an elevator, it seems like there is not a school day that we do not have a student or two in a wheelchair, on crutches, or using a scooter. An elevator would greatly assist these students, as well as assisting the maintenance workers with moving furniture or equipment from floor to floor.

As the Steubenville Catholic schools, we are addressing all of the needs in both of our buildings. Our common mission and vision statements indicate that we are looking forward to future growth and longevity of our schools.
