Thismanualisorganizedtoprovideaneasyflowfromproblemidentificationtoproblemcorrection.AlistoftroubleshootingsymptomscontainingthemostcommonengineproblemsisintheTroubleshootingSymptoms,Section(TS). ThemanualisdesignedtousetheTroubleshootingSymptomsasaguidetolocatingtheproblemanddirectingthe endusertothecorrectprocedureformakingtherepair.Completethefollowingstepstolocateandcorrecttheproblem.

Readandunderstandallofthesafetyprecautionsandwarningsbeforeperforminganyrepair.Thislistcontainsthe generalsafetyprecautionsthat must befollowedtoprovidepersonalsafety.Specialsafetyprecautionsareincluded intheprocedureswhentheyapply.

•Makesuretheworkareasurroundingtheproductisdry,welllit,ventilated,freefromclutter,loosetools,parts, ignitionsourcesandhazardoussubstances.Beawareofhazardousconditionsthatcanexist.

• Always wearprotectiveglassesandprotectiveshoeswhenworking.

•Rotatingpartscancausecuts,mutilationorstrangulation.

•Do not wearloose-fittingortornclothing.Removealljewelrywhenworking.

•Disconnectthebattery(negative[-]cablefirst)anddischargeanycapacitorsbeforebeginninganyrepairwork. Disconnecttheairstartingmotorifequippedtoprevent accidentalenginestarting.Puta‘‘Do Not Operate’’tag intheoperator’scompartmentoronthecontrols.

•UseONLYtheproperenginebarringtechniquesformanually rotatingtheengine.Do not attemptto rotatethe crankshaftbypullingorpryingonthefan.Thispracticecancauseseriouspersonalinjury,propertydamage, ordamagetothefanblade(s)causingprematurefanfailure.

•Ifanenginehasbeenoperatingandthecoolantishot,allowtheenginetocoolbeforeyouslowlyloosenthe fillercapandrelievethepressurefromthecoolingsystem.

•Do not workonanythingthatissupportedONLYbyliftingjacksorahoist. Always useblocksorproperstands tosupporttheproductbeforeperforminganyservicework.

•Relieveallpressureintheair,oil,fuelandthecoolingsystemsbeforeanylines,fittings,orrelateditemsare removedordisconnected.Bealertforpossiblepressurewhendisconnectinganydevicefromasystemthat utilizespressure.Do not checkforpressureleakswithyourhand.Highpressureoilorfuelcancausepersonal injury.

•Toprevent suffocationandfrostbite,wearprotectiveclothingandONLYdisconnectfuelandliquidrefrigerant (freon)linesinawellventilatedarea.Toprotecttheenvironment,liquidrefrigerantsystems must beproperly emptiedandfilledusingequipmentthatpreventsthereleaseofrefrigerantgas(fluorocarbons)intotheatmosphere.Federallawrequirescapturingandrecyclingrefrigerant.

•Toavoidpersonalinjury,useahoistorgetassistancewhenliftingcomponentsthatweigh23kg[50lb]ormore. Makesureallliftingdevicessuchaschains,hooks,orslingsareingoodconditionandareofthecorrectcapacity. Makesurehooksarepositionedcorrectly. Always useaspreaderbarwhennecessary.Theliftinghooks must not beside-loaded.

•Corrosioninhibitor,acomponentofSCAandlubricatingoil,containsalkali.Do not getthesubstanceinyour eyes.Avoidprolongedorrepeatedcontactwithskin.Do not swallowinternally.Incaseofcontact,immediately washskinwithsoapandwater.Incaseofcontact,immediatelyfloodeyeswithlargeamountsofwaterfora minimumof15minutes.IMMEDIATELYCALLAPHYSICIAN.KEEPOUTOFREACHOFCHILDREN.

•NapthaandMethylEthylKetone(MEK)areflammablematerialsand must beusedwithcaution.Followthe manufacturer’sinstructionstoprovidecompletesafetywhenusingthesematerials.KEEPOUTOFREACHOF CHILDREN.

•Toavoidburns,bealertforhotpartsonproductsthathavejustbeenturnedoff,andhotfluidsinlines,tubes, andcompartments.

• Always usetoolsthatareingoodcondition.Makesureyouunderstandhowtousethembeforeperformingany servicework.UseONLYgenuineCumminsorCumminsReCon replacementparts.

• Always usethesamefastenerpartnumber(orequivalent)whenreplacingfasteners.Do not useafastenerof lessorqualityifreplacementsarenecessary.

•Do not performanyrepairwhenfatiguedorafterconsumingalcoholordrugsthatcanimpairyourfunctioning.

•SomestateandfederalagenciesintheUnitedStatesofAmericahavedeterminedthatusedengineoilcanbe carcinogenicandcancausereproductivetoxicity.Avoidinhalationofvapors,ingestion,andprolongedcontact withusedengineoil.

Thisengineincorporatesthelatestdieseltechnologyatthetimeitwasmanufactured;yet,itisdesignedtoberepaired usingnormalrepairpracticesperformedtoqualitystandards.

• CumminsEngineCompany,Inc.doesnotrecommendorauthorizeanymodificationsorrepairstoengines orcomponentsexceptforthosedetailedinCumminsServiceInformation.Inparticular,unauthorized repairtosafety-relatedcomponentscancausepersonalinjuryordeath.Belowisapartiallistingof componentsclassifiedassafety-related:

• Followallsafetyinstructionsnotedintheprocedures

—Followthemanufacturer’srecommendationsforcleaningsolventsandothersubstancesusedduringthe repairoftheengine.Somesolventsandusedengineoilhavebeenidentifiedbygovernmentagenciesas toxicorcarcinogenic.Avoidexcessivebreathing,injestionandcontactwithsuchsubstances. Always use goodsafetypracticeswithtoolsandequipment.

Attachtheweldergroundcablenomorethan0.61meters[2feet]fromthepartbeingwelded.Donotconnect thegroundcableoftheweldertotheECMcoolingplateorECM.Weldingontheengineorenginemounted componentsisnotrecommended. GeneralCleaningInstructions

SolventandAcidCleaning

Severalsolventandacid-typecleanerscanbeusedtocleantheengineparts.Experiencehasshownthatthebest resultscanbeobtainedusingacleanerthatcanbeheatedto90to95degreesCelsius[180to200degreesFahrenheit]. Acleaningtankthatprovidesaconstantmixingandfilteringofthecleaningsolutionwillgivethebestresults. Cummins EngineCompany,Inc.doesnotrecommendanyspecificcleaners.Always followthecleanermanufacturer’s instructions.

Removeallthegasketmaterial,o-rings,andthedepositsofsludge,carbon,etc.,withawirebrushorscraperbefore puttingthepartsinacleaningtank.Becareful not todamageanygasketsurfaces.Whenpossible,steamcleanthe partsbeforeputtingtheminthecleaningtank.

WARNING

Acidisextremelydangerousandcandamagethemachinery.Alwaysprovideatankofstrongsodawaterasa neutralizingagent.

Rinseallofthepartsinhotwateraftercleaning.Drycompletelywithcompressedair.Blowtherinsewaterfromallof thecapscrewholesandtheoildrillings.

Ifthepartsare not tobeusedimmediatelyaftercleaning,diptheminasuitablerustproofingcompound.The rustproofingcompound must beremovedfromthepartsbeforeinstallationontheengine.

SteamCleaning

Steamcleaningcanbeusedtoremovealltypesofdirtthatcancontaminatethecleaningtank.Itisagoodwaytoclean theoildrillings.

GlassorPlasticBeadCleaning

CAUTION

Donotuseglassorplasticbeadcleaningonaluminumpistonskirts.Donotuseglassbeadcleaningon aluminumringgrooves.Smallparticlesofglassorplasticwillembedinthealuminumandresultinpremature wear.Valves,turbochargershafts,etc.,canalsobedamaged.Followthecleaningdirectionslistedinthe procedures. NOTE: Plasticbeadblastingmedia,PartNo.3822735,canbeusedtocleanaluminumringgrooves.Do not useany beadblastingmediaonpinboresoraluminumskirts.

Followtheequipmentmanufacturer’scleaninginstructions.Thefollowingguidelinescanbeusedtoadapttomanufacturer’sinstructions:

1.Beadsize:-UseU.S.sizeNo.16-20forpistoncleaningwithplasticbeadmedia,PartNo.3822735. -UseU.S.sizeNo.70forpistondomeswithglassmedia. -UseU.S.sizeNo.60forgeneralpurposecleaningwithglassmedia.

2.OperatingPressure:-Glass:Use620kPa[90psi]forgeneralpurposecleaning.

-Plastic:Use270kPa[40psi]forpistoncleaning.

3.Steamcleanorwashthepartswithsolventtoremovealloftheforeignmaterialandglassorplasticbeadsafter cleaning.Rinsewithhotwater.Drywithcompressedair. 4.Do not contaminatethewashtankswithglassorplasticbeads.
