Are Airsoft Guns Dangerous?
Airsoft guns are non-lethal replicas of real firearms. These non-lethal replicas use air or other gases, springs and electricity to fire 6 millimeter plastic BBs at targets or each other - much like real firearms do - making them popular among kids and teens for game use. Kids and adolescents use them in various games; the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends they wear protective eyewear when using any non-powder gun that resemble real guns; children should also learn how to safely hold and handle these guns while not pointing at other people or themselves pointing at others when handling such guns themselves.
Airsoft weapons can cause painful welts when fired onto skin or can strike near eyes or neck areas, as well as bruise them at close range. Furthermore, its small balls (BBs) have the power to shatter glasses or other eyewear. Therefore, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests children wear paintball-style protective eyewear while playing these types of guns; specifically looking out for glasses that meet ASTM F1776 safety standards.
Airsoft guns vary greatly in their potential risk; FPS (feet per second) measures how powerful an airsoft gun is. Springs typically feature low FPS ratings that could easily be mistaken as toys; other models like those made by Tokyo Marui such as the AK-47 and MP5 series must only be used by experienced users who understand airsoft safety protocols.
If a metal BB were to enter an airsoft gun's barrel at any distance considered skirmish play, it could damage internal gears and other parts critical for operation, leading to costly repair bills or replacement expenses if severe enough damage occurs. Rubber parts inside an airsoft gun could also be compromised at that range by direct hits from metal BBs.
Parents must ensure their children understand the importance of safety when playing airsoft or any other type of gun-play. Children should learn to handle and care for their gun properly as well as which types of ammunition is safe to shoot with it. Parents should also make sure their children understand they cannot use an airsoft gun to threaten or hurt other people or animals.
Airsoft combat is not only fun and great exercise; kids can also gain invaluable teamwork skills while engaging in this enjoyable hobby with their friends. Communicating to plan attacks, cooperate and coordinate among teammates for victory is also key - plus there is plenty of physical activity as they duck, dive and run around the field! One of the great aspects of playing airsoft is making lifelong friendships.
