BRASSED OFF

Based on the screenplay by Mark Herman Directed by Liz Steveson

Brass runs in Shane’s family, and in the midst of yet another cost of living crisis he looks back on the last great battle for the local pit and the defiant glory of Grimley Colliery Band. It’s 1994 and the tight-knit mining community of Grimley, Yorkshire, are fighting to keep their colliery open. Meanwhile, revered band leader, Danny, battles to keep his dispirited band of brass-playing miners together with the dream of qualifying for the National Championships at the Albert Hall.

When the uncertainty around the pit’s future becomes too much for the band members, loyalty is tested, pressure mounts and the community begins to break apart. With their whole way of life at stake, can the band find a way to play on?

Based on the smash-hit film, Brassed Off is a much-loved modern classic, full of grit, heart and northern humour. This production will feature live music from local brass bands to deliver a soul stirring theatrical experience.

“One clear advantage of the staged version... is the emotive impact of a large ensemble of brass-savvy professional actors and local musicians blazing through music” The Guardian

SHOW & TELL

Jack’s planning a big party for his wife’s birthday. He’s pulling out all the stops and has booked a touring theatre company to perform in the main hall of the family home. The only problem is that Jack is getting a bit forgetful in his old age and can’t remember all the details of the booking…

The Homelight Theatre Company is on its knees. They desperately need a well-paid gig and Jack’s booking is very well paid. Pinning him down on the details has been tricky and something doesn’t feel quite right.

Alan Ayckbourn’s 90th play is a celebration of theatre, a delightfully dark farce lifting the lid on the performances we act out on a daily basis.

“He is a kind of English Chekhov who is also an incomparably fine director of his own serious comedies”

The Wall Street Journal on The Girl Next Door (2021)

“Ayckbourn’s deft and light touch takes you deviously into darker reaches of the soul”

Scarborough Evening News on Family Album (2022)

“Genius... highly amusing.”

THE WHITBY REBELS

In Whitby Harbour, in the summer of 1991, something extraordinary happened. A humble pleasure boat set sail for the Arctic crewed by misfits, pensioners and the vicar for Egton & Grosmont.

This motley crew was assembled by Captain Jack Lammiman to complete a daring mission: to erect a plaque honouring Whitby whaling Captain William Scoresby senior on a volcanic island hundreds of miles north of Iceland. Their voyage is a classic story of British eccentricity and determination to rival Eddie the Eagle’s Olympic exploits, bus driver Kempton Bunton stealing the Portrait of the Duke of Wellington and crane operator Maurice Flitcroft playing golf in the British Open.

This is the (mostly) true story of a Captain, his crew and a boatload of Yorkshire grit.

“It’s incredibly silly, but it’s also really remarkable - it’s a story of incredible adventure, and of daring and of bravery, and people who are doing something audacious and brilliant”

Writer Bea Roberts

“It’s a really funny and moving play about heroes and about not being written off as you get older”

Director Paul Robinson

ALADDIN

Original story by Hanna Diyab, adapted by Nick Lane

Directed by Gemma Fairlie

For Christmas 2024, we’re revisiting another classic. The story of a poor boy from a distant land, tricked by a sorcerer into retrieving a remarkable lamp from a magical cave... we all know this one. Or do we...?

Because what if that cave was more magical than Aladdin or the sorcerer had ever imagined? What if the cave he wandered into isn’t the cave he wanders out of? What if, in fact, Aladdin finds himself outside Hairy Bob’s cave on a cold winter’s night?

A wind ravaged Marine Drive is no place for a lad in threadbare clothes and sandals. He’ll need to get from Scarbosia (oh yes) back to his home, but it’ll take more than a genie’s three wishes - especially when he’s blown the first two on hot chocolate and a parka!

From the team who brought you Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast expect a brand new adventure packed with silliness, thrills, spills, singalongs and fantastical family fun.

“Wonderful, best Christmas show I’ve seen in years... it really filled us with festive spirit”

John Godber reignites his classic comedy set on the eroding Yorkshire coast. When teacher Matt borrows his parent’s caravan with partner Rose, they were expecting four days of hill running and total de-stress.

But with a Tribfest taking place nearby, Grant and Steph’s pop-up tent is an unwelcome addition to their perfect pitch.

It’s about connection, about music and its ability to heal. It’s also about her last wish: to get high once before she died. Uplifting, big hearted and hilarious.

The Round

The McCarthy

Please note:

Our building has lots of stairs, so do take the lift if it’s easier - use floor 2 for the Round and floor 3 for the McCarthy (if you arrive early and your floor is unavailable, you can wait in our downstairs foyer or in the bar area on floor 1).

Access to most seats involves either climbing or descending stairs - we’ve marked handrails on stairs in red. In the Round, level access to the front row via the stage is often available on request. If you would like advice on seating choices, please contact our Box Office team.
