Rotary Club 13 Buzz Saw This Week’s Meeting– Muehlebach Hotel, Noon, Trianon Room, Sept. 29, 2011 “Feel the Power” Gail of Gail’s Harley-Davidson Gail grew up around motorcycles. She worked in her father’s motorcycle shop at the bottom of the hierarchy when she was a teenager. Gail quickly learned all phases of the day-to-day operation and later assumed a variety of key positions. Gail purchased the dealership from her parents in 2000, and became one of a limited number of female HarleyDavidson® dealership owners in the country. Today the business is recognized as one of the top dealerships in the country and has received many local and national awards. ―Having a first-class experience at the dealership and then returning and having another great experience – that’s what creates lasting relationships,‖ said Gail.

Bowling News Dick Retrum

We are just days away from this club’s most anticipated event, the annual bowling league draft party. All bowlers are invited to attend as well as those who want to be drafted to play for the first time. Captains are being asked to arrive at 6 p.m. on Wed. Sept. 28 to start the ball rolling (Is that a play on words?). Everyone else can show up at 6:30 p.m., bring a covered dish and a jacket. This will be an outside event. WHERE: Al & Mary Tikwarts house. 2040 Brookwood Rd. Mission Hills, KS. It is rumored that the Chief’s head coach, Todd Haley lives a few doors down from the Tikwarts. Maybe he will drop by and offer pointers on how to draft effective players.

Rotary Club 13 Buzz Saw This Week’s Meeting– Muehlebach Hotel, Noon, Trianon Room, Sept. 29, 2011 Last Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011 Pete Burgess

The great Greeting and Meeting Committee welcomed members to a memorable meeting. President Marc Horner called us to order and invited Bob Lager to lead ―America the Beautiful‖ while Denny Bolte’s brother Carl made the piano sing. Marc called Josh Hill up for a special Meuhlebach-amplified invocation. Julie Cogley welcomed our five guests that included Dr. Kathleen Hanlon and Mike Pedro the president and assistant principal of Christo Rey High School. We have several members doing recovery at home. We add Bob Eltonhead to the group. Bob is home now recovering after open heart surgery at KU Med Center, and we have assurance that Ken Beardsley will be coming home soon from St. Luke’s on the Plaza where had knee surgery this week. Lots of praise for recent Club 13 events; recognition to Sally and Bob Bibb for hosting the Tyro Music Party; to the Entertainment Committee for the Nelson-Adkins event; to the super Camp Enterprise Committee who stood for recognition of their super Camp Enterprise. Busy times are ahead. Debra Shultz needs some help from 1:45 to 3 p.m. on Wed. Sept. 28 at Washington Square Park for the dedication of the Korean War Memorial. That’s the same day Al Tikwart hosts the bowling draft at his house. Then comes the Sept. 30 Big Cowboy Carnival at the American Royal, followed on Oct. 4 by a Tyro party at Christy Chester’s home, and then three famous Fireside Evenings Oct. 11 – 13.

Mark VanLoh discusses the future of aviation in Kansas City

Oh yes, we had another great program last Thursday. Bill Moran introduced Mark VanLoh, director of the Kansas City Aviation Department. Mark’s topic was entitled, ―The Future of Aviation in Kansas City.‖ Did you know that KCI has 11,000 acres and only needs 3,500 for the airport? The rest is farmed and Mark even runs cattle as a profit center. The KC Aviation Department has 532 employees and a budget of $167 million to run the city’s two airports. The current three-terminal design from the 1970’s will be replaced in the next 10 years. A new KCI hub-friendly mega-terminal and parking garage is planned for the north side of Highway 152 at a cost of one to two billion dollars. All costs will be expensed in Federal funds just like the new Denver Airport and the new Sacramento Airport. Mark addressed the $70 million spent on the downtown airport for two new runways, 100 hanger spaces, the self-serve airplane gas station, and for concrete arresting blocks that keep aircraft emergencies from plunging into the river. We enjoyed a good presentation peppered with good humor. Thanks Mark.
