Rotary Club 13 Buzz Saw This Week’s Meeting—Marriott Hotel, Noon, Count Basie Ballroom, Nov. 3, 2011 Bowling News Dick Retrum

We have ten teams this year. They are: One More Time; No Splitters; Alley Cats - all female; Sporting 13; Hot & Cold; Hall of Framers; Spirit; Too Good To Split; Hard Heads; and Hi Rollers. Our high scorers today were Rick Crouch - 223, Ted Middendorf - 207, Karl Roscoe - 205, Henrik Andersen – 201, and Wesley Gill – 200. Mike Prestia picked up the 6 and 7-10 split. It was clear at the start of the season there was something missing; it was the owner of a bright-pink bowling ball and her trademark enthusiastic dance after a strike or spare. Welcome back, Joyce Sildon. The stars are finally aligned.

Bagel Run Committee Asks for Help The Bagel Run Committee delivers bagels and cream cheese to the Salvation Army on Saturdays. Rotary Club 13 Buzz Saw This Week’s Meeting—Marriott Hotel, Noon, Count Basie Ballroom, Nov. 3, 2011 Last Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011 Pete Burgess Last Thursday we met in Royal Hall where President Marc Horner opened the meeting and thanked the Board of Directors for greeting us. Marc invited Alan Corbet up to lead the singing of ―America the Beautiful‖ accompanied on piano by Past-President Carl Bolte. After the pledge, Kara Bennett delivered the invocation and David King took the podium to welcome visitor Wayne Thompson and visiting Rotarian Jerry Reagan from the University Hills Club in Denver. Several members are serving time in recovery bay. Janet Ellis is doing well as she recovers from the surgery on the day before her birthday last week. John Platt is home after knee replacement surgery; Ken Beardsley is recovering in Claridge Court; and Bob Eltonhead is mending after open heart surgery. Past President Carl DiCapo spoke in memory of John Trantham who passed away at 81 on Oct. 15 after a battle with cancer. John’s life and contributions to his country and to his businesses were many and impressive, as were his contributions to Rotary over a long period of service dating to 1967. Well done, John. Neil Barnett and Tom Davis, our Rotary International Committee Co-Chairs, presented Rotary International Paul Harris Fellows. Neil got in a reminder about the RI dinner on Nov. 5. Many thanks to Marla Svoboda, to Bill and Ivy Mumford, and to Jim Porter who was specifically recognized as our Mr. Comfort station of Youth Camp fame. President Marc congratulated Rowland Nofsinger that Abdillahi Bashir has been selected as a finalist to the Rotary Peace Centers Program. Abdillahi will study at the University of Queensland. Dennis Chapman came forward to bring us current with happenings in our Community-based Rotaract Club. Kent Verden reminded us to help his weekly 2-hour Saturday project that delivers bagels to the Salvation Army. Kent Fulton kicked off the Bill Brown Coat Drive. Never to be outdone, Tony Andresen’s sign-up sheets were hoisted high at the tables for the annual holiday bell ringing.

Adam Winkler discusses gun control legislation at Rotary 13

Vivien Jennings introduced Adam Winkler, Professor of Constitutional Law at UCLA and author of ―Gunfight: Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms.‖ Professor Winkler drew on precedents from history that give basis to our current set of gun laws, including the recent decision in District of Columbia v. Heller. In sum, gun laws get enacted when gun control or gun rights swing too far from the norm. Laws seem to be less about guns than about people with guns who threaten the good of the majority. And so it goes as we balance the reasons for the right to bear arms. Meanwhile, let’s get those Halloween decorations up and cheer the Chiefs when the wicked witches of the west coast fly in for Monday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium. The Rotary Peace Fellowship is part of the Rotary Peace Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution program. Bashir will study at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. The Rotary Foundation and its university partners considered candidates from all over the world as part of its highly-competitive selection process.

Time for the Bill Brown Memorial Warm Clothing Drive Kent Fulton The Bill Brown Coat Drive is one of our annual projects. Thanks to the cooperation of the Marriott Hotel and Salvation Army there will be drop-off containers available in the entry lobby of the Muehlebach Hotel on the Wyandotte Street side. Plan to bring your coats and warm clothing to our Rotary luncheon meetings Nov. 3, Nov. 10, and Nov. 17. This drive is important to the many people in Kansas City who need clothing. If you haven’t worn it in the last couple of years, you probably don’t need it any more. A couple of volunteers are needed to assist with the collections from 11:30 to noon. Tyros can earn 6 points. If you can help out or have questions, contact me at 913-236-7223.

First Greater KC Day Planning Session on Nov. 8 Tammy Neros Please plan to attend our first official Greater KC Day meeting to start planning for the 25th Annual Greater KC Day. I Hope everyone can come to the Hyatt on Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. We will meet in the Boardroom on level 3 on the north side of the building. I Hope to see you there.
