An Eye for Weeds
Practical Weed Control Solutions Throughout my professional landscape career, I have learned the importance of weed identification in our efforts to controlling weeds. Early on, in my eyes, a weed was simply another type of plant. However, with proper training, education, and coaching, I quickly developed an eye for weeds and how best to control them. In this article, I will break down some of the best pre and post-emergent weed control methods to keep your plant beds looking their best. As with most things, the right defense is a strong offense; therefore, weeds should be treated before they begin growing. This is done with pre-emergent weed control, typically applied to the beds in the spring. Most pre-emergent herbicides work by creating a barrier that prevents seeds from germinating. Products, such as Preen (www.preen. com), are available from retailers for residential application and can prevent growth of weeds in beds for up to six months. The next offensive move is to ensure your beds have an adequate layer of mulch. There are many mulch options available, from compost to recycled tires, but the most commonly used is a hardwood or bark mulch.
Applying roughly 2” of mulch will keep your plants’ roots cooler during summer months and protected in winter months. It also limits weed growth and makes it much easier to remove them as they appear. Using less than 2” of mulch would not produce these benefits—but be careful not to use too much, as it could harm the plants. Finally, if your mulched beds continue to produce weeds, you can introduce a post-emergent herbicide. These are applied after the weed has germinated and can be ‘selective’ for a specific plant, or ‘broad-spectrum’ to control a wide variety. The most important thing when using any herbicide is to read the label, and to apply it as directed with the necessary personal protective equipment. It is never too late to start working towards a weed free landscape. These tips can be used at any time throughout the year to improve your experience and help to develop your eye for weeds!
