TO MY REACH FAMILY, “In Genesis 22:14, Abraham has just witnessed an incredible miracle.

Moments after thinking his son Isaac would die as a sacrifice, God steps in, stops everything, and points Abraham toward a ram in a nearby thicket. A substitute was provided, Issac lived, and Abraham (certainly a weepy mess) rejoiced.

Abraham decided to name the mountain as a memorial — Jehovah-Jireh.

“The Lord will provide.”

I look back on the last 12 months, and I see the Provider’s handiwork at every turn.

He provided a place for us to celebrate Christmas as a homeless church. (A big thank you to our generous friends at Cedar Park.)

He provided a temporary place for us to finally regather and worship together at the Bellevue Hyatt, just in time for a wonderful Easter.

(Resurrection Sunday had some additional meaning that day.)

He provided an ideal new Sunday home at Northwest University, where we have been able to grow roots deeper into the ground and reestablish community across the life of the church. (In doing so he also provided a place for people to get baptized…in a pandemic.)

He provided FOUR new staff members, each an answer to prayer — one a former intern, one a faithful volunteer, one from across Lake Washington, and one from across the country.”

“We have an ideal home and a strong team for the season ahead. Amazing pictures of God’s grace toward us. But the foremost thing he has provided is not even visible.

No, the most precious, the most game-changing thing he has provided is a fresh encounter with the Holy Sprit. Hearts have been changed, and bodies have been healed. We did not expect a study of Galatians to be our means of receiving such a gift, but it is because of this provision that we have everything we need to be all the more faithful and fruitful as we step into our tenth year as a church.

As we walk forward we should do so full of expectancy — for Abraham did not name that mountain “the Lord has provided,” but “the Lord will provide.”

Despite having already received much, his eyes were on all that was yet to come from the God who had proven himself faithful.

May we, my friends, be no different. Confident in our generous God, let us give much, risk much, and expect much. Once again, he is bringing hope and healing to every corner of our cities, and he is inviting us to come along. What an honor. And how foolish it would be to not do everything we possibly can to play our role as it all unfolds.”

THIS YEAR WE DECLARED THE 5 THINGS WE WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR...

PEOPLE SAVED Reach is passionate about making room for the skeptical, the curious, and those burnt out on playing church. There is no bait-and-switch here — we want to see our neighbors, co-workers, family members (and you) experience the saving love of God.

DISCIPLES MADE Come as you are, but expect to be challenged way past your comfort level as we learn and grow alongside one another. God has plans for every part of our lives — both our identity and our activity — so we trust him to change us from the inside out as we follow Him together.

LEADERS TRAINED We don’t want to be a place where you just consume content and experiences, but where you are developed into the leader God has called you to be, and equipped for the incredible things he is inviting you into.

CITIES SERVED We love God, each other, and the city. Not just one city, but every city where God has placed us. We are a place that consistently aims its arrows out, serving like crazy so we can be the church our community actually needs.

CHURCHES PLANTED We are a former church plant that plants churches — which means we train and send people to start new communities of faith across the region and beyond. Choosing this path is costly — in resources and relationships — but we can’t imagine a better way to steward the gifts God has trusted us with.

JESUS NEVER STOPS PURSUING THE HEARTS OF HIS CHILDREN

As soon as we were settled into our new home at Northwest University in May, it was time to take advantage of an opportunity to do something that had never happened before in the history of our church — baptizing people during a Sunday in the middle of our morning services. What an unforgettable time this was!

Baptisms are always meaningful, but this particular group represented some of the more powerful stories of transformation we’ve heard, and served as proof that even when it felt like the world was placed on a time-out, God never stopped working — he is so very faithful.

FAITH IS MY MIDDLE NAME Christine grew up going to a Presbyterian church, but only went about ten times in her life. She had also attended a few Catholic masses every now and then.

However, when she went on a girls’ weekend with a group of Catholic friends about four years ago, Christine recalls the priest asking her to answer a question out of a room filled with people. “After that, I started reading a book he gave me. That was the start of something stirring in me.”

“If you’re 48, you can still become a Christian. If you would have told me I’d find myself in a pastor’s office, serving my church, or even having these kinds of conversations I would’ve said ‘No way!’”

Through people at Acuo Crossfit, we ended up at Reach,” she explained.

“These were really cool people in our life and I came to find out they are all Christians. We started connecting the dots. So when I would see people worshipping and waving their hands in the air at church, I was a little freaked out. But little by little, everytime the worship would begin, I would cry.”

Now as a professing Christian who has faced some very hard things in the last decade of her life, Christine has learned that God’s invisible, but compassionate hand, is working all things together.

“I look back and see all the times that God was there for me. I wish I would have known, because I felt so alone at the time. I was trying to control everything myself and I didn’t need to.”

If the last two years have taught us anything, it’s that gathering together with our brothers and sisters in Christ must not be taken for granted.

To the dozens who jumped onto serve teams to make it possible for us to move into our new Sunday home at the university — thank you.

To the hundreds who are yet to rejoin us due to health concerns, personal convictions or other challenging cirucmstances — we see you, we miss you, and we can’t wait to be with you again soon.

About six months into this season of regathering on Sundays, this is what the Reach family looked like on an average Sunday:

Our move to Northwest University has provided Reach Kids an incredible place to have fun and make new friends.

The Spirit was at work as we gathered for our first Worship Night in over 18 months.

It was a beautiful sight this summer as we saw hundreds of folks sticking around after service to meet new friends and eat tacos.

Since this summer we’ve seen dozens and dozens of new faces find their people and a home at Reach.

Middle schoolers are in community and building friendships every Sunday.

You’ll also often find them outside after-service playing ninja.

We can’t exactly express how bittersweet it was to say goodbye to the Shaftos this summer. Nick and Patricia have faithfully served our church since day one. Their fingerprints can certainly be found throughout our community.

It was an incredibly meaningful Sunday this fall with over 17 children being dedicated to Jesus.

God provided a place for us to gather together for the first time in over twelve months. Just in time for Easter Sunday.

Reach Everett started the year with their first ever baptism Sunday.

REACH EVERETT “It’s been 4 years since our family and a handful of friends set out from Kirkland to plant a church in Everett. It’s honestly hard to believe! Much like your community, ours has evolved significantly especially over the course of the last 18-24 months. Plenty of new families have joined our church.

New connections are being made with missionaries and non-profits alike.

But above all, the gathered church is finding its footing and experiencing much joy celebrating the hope we have in Jesus.

With our community now anchored and established in the heart of our city, our prayers are occupied with phrases like, “God, will you align us more closely to your heart?” and “Who are you calling us to be in this season?”

No single year has been identical at Reach Everett so we are eagerly inviting God to shape us into the local church he’s uniquely calling us to be. Your prayers, words of encouragement, and support of all kinds are always appreciated!”

THE NUMBERS “God’s faithfulness to us was on full display in 2021, and especially after the tumultuous pandemic season we’ve all been through together. We have such great confidence in what he has in store for us in 2022!

This past fiscal year, over two million dollars was given to the church, and after deducting all expenses, including our considerable investment in Mission, we ended with a net income of over $140,000 that has been reserved for savings.

Even though giving has been down about 14% from the previous year, our church has not been in a financial crisis. We have more money in savings right now than we’ve ever had with over one million dollars in the bank, and we also continue to be a debt free church. As I reflect on this past year, and where we are at this moment, I believe that God has given us everything we need to do everything he’s called us to in this season.

On behalf of Reach, we are so grateful for your financial partnership this past year. We would not have been able to accomplish all that we did this year without you. We celebrate you and God’s faithfulness in and through you.

In many ways, Reach is just getting started, and we continue to dream and take patient steps towards building a church that will be faithfully proclaiming and demonstrating the Gospel in the Puget Sound region and to the ends of the earth for the next 100 years. There have never been more opportunities to see lives transformed in our community. ADOPTING PEACE It didn’t matter how much information Megan consumed in trying to answer her questions, nothing changed. She was still faced with a marriage struggling under the burden of infertility and a faith that was being tossed about by each year that passed without a baby in their home.

“What I learned looking back,’ Meagan admitted, “I was idolizing my own understanding of the situation. I was trying to grasp control. We knew that God worked out everything for the good of those who love Him, but it seemed, at times, that God forgot us. Everyone else around us was having babies.”

After some deep healing took place in their marriage, the Mays decided to pursue adoption. Unfortunately, their first experience ended in fraudulency.

The Mays didn’t give up. In spite of the betrayal they felt, they decided to continue pursuing a child. However, what they weren’t expecting was to get a call from their adoption consultant that would ultimately provide them with, not one but, two babies.

“We kept asking ourselves, ‘Are we crazy? Are we really open to this?’ And then we both decided, yeah, we are crazy. Sometimes that’s what walking in faith looks like.”

“Malina and Fynn are called ‘virtual twins’ since they are only three months apart.” The pain of past disappointment didn’t disappear, but it was now saturated in purpose. “We had seasons where we thought God forgot about us, but we realize He hadn’t. He was working everything for our good all along.”

MISSION PARTNERS At the outset of the pandemic, we determined that one of our primary responses to the uncertainty of the season would be generosity. We knew little else at the time, but through your faithful giving, we’ve been able to invest nearly 20% of the church’s income into mission initiatives-- this is one of the great stories of our church over the past year.

Together, we gave nearly $400,000 to support our mission partners-these include church plants, local and global non-profits serving the vulnerable, missionaries in India, Taiwan, and Uganda, and many many needs within our church family, such as covering medical bills, rent, and much more through our Benevolence fund.

Two Feet Project is impacting youth locally and abroad. In Seattle, they are connecting marginalized youth with good jobs in the local community, a crucial step toward long-term success. In Kenya, they are building meaningful relationships with youth through mentorship and education.

Jake and Emily Smith recently began overseeing Word of Life, a school in Taiwan where they teach the Bible using an immersion English environment. Within the first week, three students became followers of Jesus.

DEEP + WIDE Reach is committed to planting new churches. We ourselves were a church plant back in 2012. Since then we’ve sent out 4 plants of our own. All along the way we’ve prayed for and financially contributed to plants across the country and the world.

MEET-UPS Meet-ups are a lot of things: a connecting point for the people of Reach, a place for new people to plug in for the first time, a chance to serve, even a chance to smoke meat to get you through the winter.

Beneath and through all of this, though, Meet-ups are an expression of a body existing in its different and distinct parts, and still being one. They’re about community, and the goal of every one of them is to help us do what we’ve always said we want to: Be the Church, and Reach the City.

Over 930 people participated in the 50+ meet-ups that happened throughout the year.

Kendall Carver and her DNA have been serving a local elementary school by providing meals to teachers, organizing cleaning projects, and a supplies drive for families.

Marie organized a self care day for single moms which gave these women a chance to rest and be served themselves.

DNA DNAs are 3-5 people of the same gender who meet regularly to read the Bible, pray, and point each other to Jesus. DNAs are the main thing our church does to grow towards Jesus and care for each other.

For the last five years, Kelli’s DNA has been meeting with three other women in the life of our church. It was her DNA that kept her in the Word and emotionally afloat where a cancer diagnoses blindsided her and her family.

“When I went through cancer last year, they were the ones who helped and encouraged me.” When Kelli’s life was turned upside down with a cancer diagnosis, she realized more than ever, how important consistent, deep relationships were. “Being in a DNA has been very helpful to me. These women are the closest to me and know all about what’s going on in my life.”

“When picking a DNA, find people who will be consistent. Crystal, one of the women in mine, has always made DNA a priority. That’s why our group works so well. We have had struggles and drama, at times, but we truly enjoy each other’s company, learn together, encourage, and pray for one another.”

FRIENDS LIVING LIKE FAMILY, FOR THE GOOD OF OUR CITY. Because of the faithfulness of their leaders, Groups continued to meet throughout the region this year. Whether in-person or on Zoom, meals were shared, stories were exchanged, and a culture of prayer grew deeper into our community than ever before.

In 2021, we expanded our community efforts with new types of Groups, many of which continue to gather according to geography. New expressions include groups of people in the same stage of life, and groups for those with shared passions for outreach & biblical justice.

One of the most exciting additiions at Reach this past year has been the launch of Care Groups. These environments have been in development for over a year, and are designed to help people find healing in specific areas such as grief, trauma and addiction. We are truly excited to care for our church all the more as we invite people deeper into God’s story and the hope he has for all who are hurting.

“Being in a Group has truly changed the way we do life together.”

“Our Group remained consistent online since Covid. Every time we met together we came with a prompt or topic we’d like to cover. This ranged from marriage check-ins to very fun virtual games. Since summertime, we’ve been meeting on the first Wednesday of the month at a park. It’s BYOD (bring your own dinner) and we can all feel safe gathering outdoors.

God in Himself is community—Father, Spirit, Son. He deeply cares about people and genuine relationships, and so should we. This also models to our children that people and community matter.

We believe it’s so important not only to feel connected to the church, but to foster lasting relationships to serve the neighborhood and city around us. We pour into other peoples’ lives and vice versa. God has used our community to give us the boldness to meet new neighbors and share the Gospel.”

“It’s impossible to live life to the fullest without experiencing it together.”

The Gross family first met as a Group in 2019 and have done all sorts of things to keep theirs going this year. “We met at Spuds for dinner and walked Juanita Beach as well as had Zoom Family Gatherings and Zoom Pictionary. We’ve planned Secret Santa during stay-at-home days, and hosted Tailgate Family Dinners in a parking lot with our neighbors.” They’ve done it all to stay connected: bonfires, tailgates, dinners, and Zoom gatherings; even during uncertain times.

One thing they’re sure of? You have to be flexible to host a Group and believe it’s worth the effort. “We had two different women’s study groups last fall – an indoor one and an outdoor one! Differing comfort levels has been hard to navigate, but well worth the effort. Some things worked great, others not so much. And as always, we’ve had many group members move away and new friends have come along.”

When asked if they would encourage others to start or join a Group, they were quick to respond. “Things are challenging right now, and it is also the ideal time for us to intentionally support and love others. Over the past couple years, our family has been through some of the hardest experiences we will ever face. Without community we would have been isolated and lonely. We are all called to be in a close community – it’s what God intended. Whatever is holding you back from getting plugged in, let’s figure that out together. You won’t regret it!”

REACH KIDS At the outset of 2021, Reach Kids was completely online with a collection of 62 original videos. These videos featured content contributed by over 25 different families and were reaching hundreds more families each week.

We’re still blown away by how God used YouTube to keep us connected, continue teaching kids who he is, and allow us to express ourselves by having fun and being silly along the way!

Returning to in-person services brought a whole new set of challenges as we entered into a season of rebuilding. God has continued to move faithfully within Reach Kids by providing exactly what, and who, we need.

We now have a team of over 60 volunteers, including 3 Coordinators and 11 Room Leads. This team is dedicated to helping 68+ kids each week know Jesus, worship Jesus, make friends, and make a difference in the lives of those around them.

We’re eager to see what God has in store for this next season as we work toward adding more folks to our team, dialing in our training process, and re-starting our one-on-one Kids Support ministry.

This summer we did all we could to create points of connection for students and their families. Our family BBQ, fun day at the lake, and trip to the Mariners game all led to friendships started and memories made.

COVID brought a lot of twists and turns into youth ministry, but we took it as an opportunity to establish new culture, set new goals, and welcome new students and leaders into the fold. Every step of the way we have seen students grow in their love for Jesus and their understanding of the mission God has invited them into. We’re already having a ton of fun through it all, and it’s only the beginning.

This summer we introduced Bella Pronovost as our new Youth Lead. Bella previously served as a youth intern here at the church, and to have her in this role is a dream.

REACH COLLEGE GROUP

A year of masks and social distancing could not tame the College Group’s passion to build community, and see their friends come to know Jesus more. Amidst the joys and challenges of this year, Jesus shaped the lives of many students through the simple weekly rhythms of singing, studying Scripture, and eating together...usually tacos.

Kelsey Nerland joined the team this year as our College + Young Adults Director. In just a few months she’s already overhauled our intern program and started creating new opportunities for community for young adults at Reach.

REACH WOMEN

“This year has been one of rebuilding for Reach Women as we begin new rhythms and restart old ones. One thing remains: the women at Reach know how to love and minister to one another.

As we embark on a season of figuring out our new normal, I am encouraged that the care and intention our women have towards one another and Jesus has remained the same. We’ve had an outstanding response to our invitation for women to serve, get together, and come alongside one another. The vision of Reach Women is to equip and connect one another by creating sustainable and supportive rhythms of learning, studying, rest and relationship.”

Over 80 women from all over the region gathered together to worship and build new friendships in September. The Holy Spirit even provided a spontaneous moment for the women to pray for specific needs at this incredible night.

REACH WORSHIP We’ve seen some special moments in our church when it comes to singing over the past year. A dozen new folks stepped into leadership roles on our worship team. Our community of musicians and creatives navigated venue changes, new tech, and setup/tear down with incredible attitudes and hearts to serve our church.

In October, we got to gather as a church for a night of worship and prayer for the first time in nearly two years. We have been wildly encouraged by what we see the Holy Spirit doing during our gatherings, and we can’t wait for what he’s got in store for 2022.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM REACH YOUTH LEAD

GET TO KNOW BELLA Bella’s heart is to raise up young followers of Jesus to be bold in their faith, live on mission, and do life together. She landed at Reach her freshman year of college at NU, where she was a stand-out leader in campus ministries. She loved attending Reach College Group, where she met her wonderful husband, Liam. She will never turn down a trip to Target, and really enjoys funny memes that help her not take life too seriously.

REACH WOMEN’S LEAD

GET TO KNOW ERIN Erin is an Arizona girl, but has called the PNW (and Reach) home for the last several years along with her husband, Joseph, and two wonderful kids. Erin received her Masters degree from Fuller Theological Seminary, and is a licensed therapist. She is passionate about spiritual formation, and loves seeing the women of Reach connect with God and one another.

MEET KELSEY NERLAND Kelsey joined the team this year as our new College & Young Adults Director. Her years of previous experience working with college students in the Seattle area has already served her well, evidenced by the way she has already overhauled Reach’s intern program and established a board of leaders to help her champion ministry to young adults for the season ahead.

DIGITAL IMPACT While much of our church was hungry to return in-person this year, many weren’t quite ready. Resourcing our people in the digital space remained essential. Through new initiatives, dozens of people were equipped to care for others through our online Gosple Care class, thousands of folks heard the Gospel through our Sunday livestream, and hundreds of kids laughed and learned through online videos created by the Reach Kids Team.

Simply put, our media team, led by Stephen Garcia, has been absolutely incredible this year. We are forever grateful for the way they have kept us connected to one another in a precarious time.

A MISSIONARY IN OUR BACKYARD In 2021, we began supporting the unique work that Jonathan Rainey is doing in Seattle. This was our first year financially supporting Jonathan’s ministry as a chaplain to the Seattle Seahawks and the University of Washington football team.

He has the privilege of discipling hundreds of athletes and coaches, and has the opportunity to be a light throughout the Seattle area and beyond.

Jonathan has blessed us with powerful sermons several times over the years, and is an elder just down the hill from our Sunday gatherings at Antioch Bible Church.

DEVELOPING NEW LEADERS For the last year and half, one of our most important priorities has been identifying and developing new leaders -- some to be elder candidates, and others to serve and lead throughout the life of our church and city. When Gerry Breshears finishes his season as an outside elder at year’s end, he will have taught 3 rounds of seminarylevel theology courses at Reach, impacting nearly 80 men and women who have participated.

MEET THE TEAM Reach is led by a team of people with different backgrounds, experiences, and passions. We’re honored to be in the roles we are in, and we have a lot of fun, but our primary focus is to equip you for a life of purpose in God’s family, on God’s mission.

This past spring we installed Mike O’Neil as Reach’s newest elder. Mike and his wife, Val have been faithful leaders since the earliest days of the church. At the time of printing, two more leaders have opted into the elder candidacy process, with several others potentially joining in the months ahead.
