The Board of Directors unanimously approved a new rule, which begins January 1, 2022: “Bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) born January 1, 2022 and after will be required to have a genomic profile and parentage markers on file in order to register any progeny with the American Shorthorn Association”. This means that regardless of service type Natural or AI, all bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) used for breeding need to be genomically tested (currently, this is the 100K test but could be subject to change according to Neogen standards in the future). This pertains to AI sires as well as pasture sires/clean up bulls. The rule only affects bulls born after Jan 1, 2022, so this rule won’t really come into play until their progeny are born, late 2023 or 2024. Please be aware that AI sires still require the 3 genetic conditions as well – TH, PHA, and DS.

Send DNA Directly to Neogen As a reminder, breeders can now send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office first. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the office for preprocessing. 3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal 2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number 3. A barcode number for each animal tested Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, (it’s not entirely an automated process) staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to print and send to the lab with samples. Checks/payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

Looking Down the Road

T

ime is running short to register and make your reservations for the Annual meeting this month. Come to Kansas City and attend the American Royal National Shorthorn Show on Oct 20th followed by a Breeder Social at the ASA office that evening. Drinks and hors-d’oeuvres will be furnished at the social for a fun time to meet and get acquainted or re-acquainted with fellow Shorthorn breeders. The Annual Meeting starts at 9:00 am, Saturday, Oct. 20th, so you can enjoy your time with Shorthorn friends and family the evening before as late as you wish. The Annual Meeting is held at the Hilton Kansas City Airport Hotel. Activities during the meeting include the State of the Association Report, the election of ASA Board Members plus presentations to the retiring ASA Board Members. The Awards Luncheon will be at noon which includes a featured motivational speaker, Matt Booth. We will present the Century Club Members, Performance Award Winners, and Show Award Winners, followed by the Heritage, Merit, and Builder of the Breed Awards for 2023. An Awards Reception will follow the luncheon for those who’d like to stay and visit with fellow Shorthorn enthusiasts. This is a fun and educational time to share with passionate Shorthorn breeders. I hope to see you all on Oct. 20th & 21st in Kansas City. Check out pages 26 & 27 of this issue of Shorthorn Country for a list of the elected delegates who will vote for the ASA Board of Directors. Also, on pages 24 and 25 are short biographies of the candidates running for the Board. Looking down the road, our next big event will be the Super National Shorthorn Show at the North American in Louisville, Kentucky. We hold the Deck the Stalls annual fundraiser for the National Junior Shorthorn Show 10

and Youth Conference at this event. All proceeds go to the Shorthorn Youth Development Fund Foundation (SYDF) which functions solely to sponsor the Shorthorn Junior National. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year for the SYDF. Your support of this event is very important to maintain the growth and activity we are seeing in our Junior Programs and the Junior National. We will have 50/50 raffle tickets selling that will be drawn at the Junior National in 2024. This is also a great way to support the youth and have a chance to make a considerable amount of money at the same time. Other contributions can be made through the Red White and Roan Club and the Royal Society Club memberships. If you have a desire to support this great breed cause, just ask anyone at the ASA or an SYDF Board member. Other events coming include the Super National in Oklahoma City and the National Shorthorn Show in Denver. There will be a Summit Sale in conjunction with each of these January shows. Rounding out our National Shows will be the Fort Worth Stock Show in Texas and Dixie National in Jackson, Mississippi. Then the big event for 2024 after the Junior National will be the Summer Symposium in Lexington, Kentucky, July 18-20. Don’t miss this event; there will be topics of interest to all Shorthorn breeders. A lot is happening in our breed. The movement to be part of this Shorthorn community is growing. It is up to all of us to maintain the positive feeling by welcoming new folks into the Shorthorn Family!

Beef Business

Matt director of Woolfolk performance programs

Quality Matters I believe it’s important to look outside our corner of the industry and examine the bigger picture. As breeders, it’s important to be knowledgeable and up to date on not only Shorthorn cattle, but the entire beef industry. Without the large-scale beef industry, where is the need for Shorthorn cattle? Knowing more about the big world around us helps us better understand our place in it. The National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA) is a nationwide program conducted every 5 years. The NBQA includes studies of carcass data trends, discussions with workers in the industry, and dives into where the industry has improved and can continue to get better in delivering a worthy product to the consumer marketplace. In this article, I will be referencing the most recent audit conducted in 2021, as well the audit prior that was conducted in 2016. There’s way more information to digest from these audit reports than I can fit into this column, so I encourage you to find them online and dive deeper yourself. Some of the data found in these NBQA reports focuses on quality and yield grade of feeder cattle coming out of the packing plant. In the most recent report, 69.2% of cattle graded USDA Choice, 16.4% graded USDA Select, and 7.5% graded USDA Prime. Comparing back to the last audit in 2016, the percentage of cattle grading Choice is basically unchanged. However, the number of Selects is considerably lower (almost 24% in 2016) and the number of Prime cattle has almost doubled. Genetic selection is playing a role in this increase, but so is feeding to a heavier, fatter endpoint in the yard. Carcasses tabbed as a USDA Yield Grade 4 or 5 (fatter, more wasteful carcass) went from 14.6% in the 2016 audit report to 22.6% in the most recent findings. This has come as the expense of YG 1 and 2 carcasses, whose portion of 14

shorthorn country • october 2023

the population has dropped significantly in this period. It makes sense that if we are going to feed steers to a heavier end weight, they’re going to put on more fat, not just red meat. One section of the NBQA discusses lost opportunity costs in the beef sector. These lost opportunities are figured by how many dollars will be given up if industry goals and targets aren’t met by the next NBQA in 2026. Going back to the first audit in 1991, the biggest lost opportunity has been because of quality grade through every cycle of this audit. Cattle not meeting demands for better quality beef has been driving the market for over 30 years now. The lost opportunity cost for quality grade sits at $27.17 in the 2021 NBQA and is driven by if the industry misses the target mark of 10% Prime cattle by 2026. However, the lost opportunity because of quality grade is $18.60 less per head today than it was in 1991 (dollar figures adjusted to 2022 prices). Why is this opportunity loss shrinking? Beef quality grades are getting better! Yield grade has consistently been the second highest lost opportunity. At $18.21 in the most recent audit, this figure is $13 higher than it was 10 years ago. Again, as we make them grade better, they’re getting fatter all over the carcass, causing more waste. The NBQA reports track a mobility score of fed cattle entering the packing plants, rating whether cattle move normally, are slightly stiff, or have extreme difficulty in their motion. In the 2021 audit, ninety two percent of fed cattle scored as moving normally, with seven percent being stiff, and one percent having obvious difficulty. The number of stiff movers more than doubled from the 2016 audit, while the ones with clear mobility difficulties increased tenfold. With the additional weight steers are asked to carry to finish

in today’s marketplace, their skeletons are under more stress. Now more than ever, cattle must be sound in their feet and legs and be able to hold up to the additional pounds they’re being asked to carry through the feeding phase. Looking at the current genetic landscape of our United States cattle herd, there should be an opportunity for genetics that can maintain the upward trend of quality grade, while reducing wasteful fat cover, increasing yield, and keeping the structural integrity to get them through the feeding phase and soundly off the truck at the packing plant. Enter Shorthorn. The data we have collected from progeny studies and breeder submission over the last 5 years demonstrates that our genetics can do that, especially in situations where Shorthorn bulls are used on black-hided commercial cows. I have even seen sets of kill data where Shorthorn sired steers are qualifying for premiums for the most prominent branded beef program in the country at a 30-40% clip. While the earlier section of this article speaks of lost opportunity costs, I believe there is an opportunity for Shorthorn breeders and their genetics. There are cattle in this breed that can make plenty of positive contributions to the commercial cattle industry. Unfortunately, our biggest limiting factor is volume. You can find more bulls of larger breeds selling on a given day in sale season than you can Shorthorn bulls all season long. To rank among the top 5 breeds in the United States by registration numbers, the Shorthorn cow herd would have to quadruple in size. The likelihood of that occurring is less than slim, so we must work harder with the resources we have: our genetics, and our passionate breeders. Keep making good, industry relevant genetic choices in your herd, and don’t be afraid to tell the story of Shorthorn.

Fall Show Season The ASA staff is looking forward to seeing everyone this fall as we start heading to events and shows. The Keystone International Livestock Expo and American Royal will be here before we know it! We are also excited to be hosting the annual meeting in conjunction to the American Royal again this year. View the full schedule for annual meeting on page 22. The North American International Livestock Exposition comes quickly after the American Royal, see below for the full schedule. If you have any stalling requests for NAILE, please send those in by November 1st. NAILE stalling is always a bit tight, and we advise you to enter more head than you plan to bring to allow room for tack space. In previous years, NAILE reduces our stall space by

30%. Therefore, you will receive 30% less than what you entered. For example: If you enter 10 animals, you will receive 7 stall spaces. This is just an example, and we cannot confirm stalling until entries have closed. Just a reminder before you hit the road to these fall shows, check those registration papers and tattoos for accuracy. NAILE requires junior cattle to be tattoo verified and will be completed during the check in process by NAILE staff. Another reminder for Louisville exhibitors is the barn does NOT open until Noon on Thursday, November 9th. You are NOT allowed to bring anything in to the barn until then; this includes extension cords! The NAILE staff will confiscate anything that is in the barns

before Noon. Should you enter for one of these shows and cannot make it, we ask that you please let us know so we can use the stalling space accordingly. This communication helps your fellow exhibitors so we can reallocate space to others. We are excited for another thrilling fall spent at shows and look forward to seeing past and new breeders and exhibitors. As you prepare for these shows and find yourself with questions, Cassie and Wade are always happy to assist and help. *Stalling requests can be sent to Cassie or Wade via email or by calling the office.*

Shelby director of youth activities, Diehm director of marketing & communications

Season of Change October is one of my favorite months of the year. The weather is starting to become cooler (I live for temps between 50-65), the leaves are changing to beautiful colors, and the show season is kicking off strong. The fall always seems to fly by between American Royal, Annual Meeting, NAILE, and Thanksgiving. Before we know it, Christmas arrives, and we are welcoming the New Year. As we go through this season of change, Seth and I will be encountering some changes of our own. We found out in May that we will be welcoming a little one into our family at the end of January. This baby boy is going to bring a lot of change and adjustment to my professional and personal life. But change isn’t something that I see as bad. This is a good change for our life, one we have been wishing for the last few years. While I may make some

adjustments to my work life, it doesn’t mean I am going anywhere, anytime soon. I love this job and look forward to being here every day. It just means I may have a new sidekick at the junior national, which several of our annual junior national attendees have already volunteered to babysit (no one can avoid babies). And we are so looking forward to all the changes that will come with being new parents. As we think about change, we always have a few updates or tweaks to the National Junior Shorthorn Show. We had a few schedule adjustments and contest changes from the junior board meeting this year. Be sure to check juniorshorthorn.org for that updated schedule and contest rules. If you don’t already follow the American Junior Shorthorn Association Facebook page, we share important details throughout the year about AJSA and NJSS. Make

sure you have downloaded or updated your Shorthorn App so you can easily access information from your phone regarding the NJSS. We keep the same information on the app as the website – it is just easier to get to on the app if you are viewing it on your phone! Change may not always be easy, but it is important for growth and improvement. We have a great group of junior board members who embrace the change so we can make the best possible event for the junior members. If you know our junior board, you know they truly care about what we need to do for our juniors. They make me proud and should make everyone proud of the leaders they are for the AJSA. I want to leave off with a quote by Winston Churchill. “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”

Intent to Run Members Announce Intent to Run for ASA Board of Directors Cory Bollum Fellow Shorthorn Breeders: It is with great pride and honor that I write this letter asking for the opportunity to be elected to a seat on the Board of Directors at this year’s ASA annual meeting. I am located in Austin, MN and our multi-generational farm that was homesteaded in 1863 is located in Goodhue, MN. Bollum Family Shorthorns (BFS) ownership today consists of 3 siblings (Cory, Carl, and LeAnn Bollum) and our respective families. Mary and I have 3 grown children Connor, Josh, and Emily that are also involved in BFS. The operation today runs over 600 acres and the cow herd consists of 125 cows, mostly all purebred Shorthorn and a few commercial cows used as recips. We have held our own annual on-line “Red, White, and Roan” production sale for the last 13 years. I have been involved and on the MN Shorthorn Association Board of Directors since 1998. I have made a career at Hormel Foods Corporation, for over 32 years. I have been involved in various different positions and locations for the Fortune 500 Global Branded Food company. Currently, I am the Director of Pork Operations and Procurement and involved with many aspects of leadership of a Packing plant operation and one of the most iconic and popular brands in the meat industry. I believe the Shorthorn breed is positioned to capitalize on the many opportunities available in the cattle industry today. We have the ability due to our breeds maternal, heterosis and disposition advantages to take a sizable 24

shorthorn country • october 2023

chunk of market share away. I welcome the chance to represent this great breed and try to help bring both the show side and the commercial side of Shorthorns to unify and be “the breed” for the next generation. Tyler Cates - It is with great honor and careful consideration that I accept the nomination to run for the American S h o r t h o r n Association Board of Directors. My life has been Shorthorn cattle from the time I was old enough to walk alongside my grandfather, father, and uncle. I would anxiously await each months Shorthorn Country and I learned how to read by memorizing each issue. My passion and love for the Shorthorn breed is as strong today as it was then. My wife Cortney and I, along with our daughter Piper, who is a fourth generation Shorthorn breeder, are very excited with the leadership and the direction our breed is heading. I have the privilege of attending and judging many cattle shows across the country. I can say with great pride that the Shorthorn breed has done more to make the cattle, in all facets of our industry, as uniform across the breed as any other. The cattle we exhibit in the yards and in the show ring have never been more similar and I believe that the record numbers we are seeing in all avenues of our breed’s beef business is a true testimony of our continued success. I think that the Shorthorn breed has an image of a family friendly, wholesome environment that is inviting and conducive for raising children. Our junior program and junior nationals are

second to none, I feel it is very important to keep the same amount of focus on it, to insure our place in that part of the industry. The dream I envision for the Shorthorn breed is not limited to only being junior friendly but to provide opportunities to all beef producers in every aspect of the business. I am very proud of the commercial acceptance that our breed has gained throughout the beef industry and there are numerous Shorthorn breeders that are to be commended for this accomplishment. Things do not happen by chance or overnight, but only through many years of dedication and innovation. It was the belief that we had the right product, and it just needed some modification, that allowed us to achieve acceptance and success. The cattle business is constantly evolving and I think it is important to stay current among other breeds. I agree with the current board that we must continue to submit more data and do more DNA testing to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses in our breed and the cattle that we have to offer. We are currently seeing record prices for feeder calves; cull cows, as well as, a thriving freezer beef market for producers across the country, the cattle industry is currently in a good place. I am a firm believer that whether it is the cattle business or any other business, success is still achieved by simple supply and demand. I think it is important for our membership to identify what consumers and buyers in their area want, and work to supply that product. I feel that it is the leadership’s responsibility to make sure that we continue to encourage the membership to make our product as desirable and competitive as we possibly can. In my opinion, it is our job as a Shorthorn family to unite in showcasing all that our breed has to offer, no matter

what our targeted clientele, and to support one another. If elected to the board I believe that my strongest asset is my passion for the Shorthorn breed and my dedication to improving all aspects of the breed and our organization not only for my daughter but for many generations to come. Mark Gordon It has been an honor and privilege to serve the members of the American S h o r t h o r n Association the last 3 years. The opportunity to represent the members of this organization is something I take great pride and honor in. With beef demand at an all time high, it is vital that we as an association, stay in tune with the industry and the consumers of our product. Technology and genomics have become tools needed to advance our operations in the beef industry, and I am a firm believer that our Association needs to stay progressive and current with all tools ,technology and programs to ensure breeder profitability. We need to be attentive to our customers demands, and provide the best product on the market.

I currently manage Croft Fertilizer Service Inc., in central Illinois. I have held this position for the last 38 years, and am involved in the daily operations of the facility, its employees, and keeping current with all state and federal regulations. Purchasing of products and retail sales to customers are also duties I oversee. Financial growth and stability of the business are of my up-most priority and responsibility. My family, along with myself and wife Denise, own and operate Rockin’ G Land and Cattle. We currently run 35 cows, with an emphasis on raising

functional, productive cattle that will perform and be profitable in all aspects of the industry. We have an extensive embryo transfer program on the ranch, which we believe give us the capabilities to multiply superior genetics. We recently cloned our first female to also propagate those genetics into our herd. Once again, it has been an honor to serve the American Shorthorn Association, and its members the last 3 years, and would be a pleasure to continue this service.

Performance Award Winners for 2022 Recognized at the American Shorthorn Association’s Awards Luncheon on October 21, 2023

On the following pages, you will find a list of the Shorthorn breed’s honor roll of performance champions, also known as the Pacer Performance Awards for 2022. Congratulations to all breeders and their animals who qualify for these designations. It’s not an easy task for a sire or dam to qualify for these awards! To understand the standards these animals must meet to qualify for these various categories, check out the last page of these award winners. The cows listed are all that are newly

qualified for the Performance Award categories based off their 2022 calves. The youngest cows to qualify for this set of awards are the 2018 born females that qualified on their first three calves in 2020, 2021 and 2022. We treat the Performance Awards recognition like a “hall of fame” induction: once you get recognized, you’re in for life! A cow could certainly meet the qualifications for Performance or Pacesetter Dam multiple times in her life (and many do!), but the cow is only honored with the recognition the first

time she qualifies. If you have a cow that you feel qualifies for the 2022 awards and do not find her on the list, it’s likely because she was a past qualifier who has already been recognized. In Digital Beef, each qualifying animal has an “Awards” tab you can click to see when and what recognition your animal has received. A cow can be recognized as a Performance Dam and then later in life be recognized as a Pacesetter Dam as well.

Updates ASA IMPORTANT

FROM THE

New Rule for Milking Shorthorn/Lincoln Red Dual Registration

As of July 1, 2023, all Milking Shorthorn and Lincoln Red cattle that are to be brought into the American Shorthorn Association herd book as dual registered animals must be tested as an AI sire or donor dam prior to herd book acceptance, due to the lack of information available in their online registries.

Update for DNA Testing

Starting July 1, 2023, all animals tested through the American Shorthorn Association must have a registration or recorded number to be accepted for testing. This is only a slight adjustment to the current rule, which applies to samples sent directly to the lab. This rule adjustment includes any animal tested – whether the samples are sent directly to the lab or to the ASA office for pre-processing. Also starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will also be incurred for those samples sent to the office for preprocessing. We are trying to encourage breeders to send their samples directly to Neogen, once their DNA submission form is approved and in their hands. If there is an error in the registry holding your animal up from being pushed through as registered, you would need to go the ‘recorded number’ route. In the birth entry screen, you can un-check the ‘Register?” box, re-validate, and commit your animal to the registry as recorded to receive that ‘U’ recorded number.

New Digital Invoicing for ASA

I. n an effort to reduce the amount of paper sent out of the office, statements will now be emailed, rather than printed. Please be sure to double-check that you have a correct email on file in the registry. If you wish to continue with the printed version, simply log into your DigitalBeef account and go to the ‘Prefs’ tab to update your Invoicing preference (see screenshot). You can also call the office to make the switch.

Washta, Iowa

What do you want to be when you grow up/future plans? I plan to attend Iowa State University this fall to major in agricultural education. I hope to become an agricultural educator and FFA advisor. What is one thing you have learned through showing cattle? The most important lesson showing cattle has taught me is that sometimes things do not go our way, and we have to move on and keep pursuing our goals. What is your favorite cattle show you have exhibited at? Why? My favorite cattle show I have exhibited at is the Iowa State Fair. I enjoy showing here because there is always a lot to do and a lot of new food to try. I also enjoy hanging out with the other exhibitors from my county.
