SHORTHORN HISTORY SHORTHORN HISTORY
“Missouri is Shorthorn Country” is not just a slogan, it is a fact. Many members of the Missouri Shorthorn Association (MSA) have raised Shorthorn cattle for over 100 years. Names like Alden, Hendrickson, Merideth, Betteridge, Sneed, Naylor, and others have a rich history in the breed and based their business on Shorthorns. The Missouri Shorthorn Association is the glue that binds these breeders. It provides a common ground for members to gather, share ideas, and promote our breed. Founded in 1945 the MSA not only promotes the breed but also provides support for our future generation of ranchers through the Missouri Junior Shorthorn Association. Our juniors learn the value of hard work, leadership, responsibility, and teamwork as they compete at both local but also national events with the cattle they have raised.
Missouri Shorthorns are on the rise! The interest in Shorthorns has grown rapidly in the last several years. New breeders are coming in and existing ranches are looking to Shorthorns to bring back to their herd the solid structure, easy handling, and maternal traits they are known for. Also, as we bring farm to table end consumers are placing value in the quality of beef with the marbling and yield Shorthorn cattle produce. The MSA has felt this wave greater than anyone. We have had a 50% increase in members along with MSA being ranked as one of the top associations in the nation. Membership has its privileges. Members in the Missouri Shorthorn Association enjoy the benefit of having a marketing team promoting their breed. The MSA provides a number of services such as social media, marketing materials, and promotion at trade shows and events. In addition, the greatest service the MSA provides is to give members the platform to sell at our annual state sale. This sale held the last Tuesday in March has enjoyed great success and has reached buyers nationwide. It has been so successful that we have decided to add a second sale the last week of October. Only members can participate in this sale with the majority of the proceeds going back to the consignors as well as donation lots providing revenue for our juniors.

MSA PRESIDENT REPORT MSA PRESIDENT REPORT
The Missouri Shorthorn Association (MSA) had a dynamic and impactful 2024, marked by significant growth, youth engagement, and breed promotion. Here’s a comprehensive overview of their year:
Membership Growth & Breed Promotion
MSA experienced a 50% increase in membership, positioning it among the top Shorthorn associations nationally. This surge reflects a broader resurgence in interest toward Shorthorns, known for their solid structure, ease of handling, and maternal traits. Additionally, Shorthorn beef is gaining popularity among consumers for its marbling and yield, aligning with the farm-to-table movement.
To support its members, MSA organizes two annual sales—the first on the last Tuesday in March and a second addition in late October. These sales have reached buyers nationwide, with proceeds benefiting consignors and funding junior programs.
Youth Engagement & Awards
In 2024, MSA introduced its inaugural 4-H and FFA Youth Awards, offering financial support to young breeders. Awards included:
• $750 First Place and $500 Second Place for 4-H and FFA members.
• Naylor Bonus Donation Award of $750.
• Honorable Mention awards of $250 each.
Recipients were required to submit a written application and a short video titled “Sharing My Dream With Shorthorns.” These awards aim to assist in purchasing registered Shorthorn or Shorthorn Plus breeding stock and encourage participation in local, state, and national shows.
Breeder of the Year
Dameron Livestock was honored as the 2024 MSA Breeder of the Year. This accolade recognizes breeders who actively promote and advocate for the Shorthorn breed. Past recipients include Legacy Ranch (2023) and Naylor Shorthorns (2022).
Looking Ahead
MSA continues to foster a family-friendly environment, offering various events throughout the year, including the annual state-sponsored online sales. Membership provides access to marketing resources, promotional platforms, and opportunities to participate in these events.

MJSA PRESIDENT REPORT MJSA PRESIDENT REPORT
This past year has been a great year for the Missouri Junior Shorthorn Association. This past summer at the Missouri State Fair, we elected a new slate of officers and wrapped up our meeting, and enjoyed pizza. The annual water fight took place shortly after, with competitive fun.
The MJSA is a growing organization that has used this past year to start new traditions. This past fall, the officer team put together a fall meeting. The members gathered at Fahrmeier Farms in Lexington, Missouri, for our first annual fall meeting. Members got to enjoy many snacks, outdoor games, and each other’s company. It was a great success, and we hope to continue this for years to come. Furthermore, this fall and winter, we had multiple members who showed nationally and represented the state of Missouri well on the national level. This spring, we continued to have members showing throughout the state of Missouri, having great success.
As we roll through 2025, we are continuing to see a great amount of engagement from our members. We have many families attending the 2025 Shorthorn Junior National in Grand Island, Nebraska, this June. With the continued growth within our Junior Association, the officer team is very excited to continue to grow our Association and can’t wait to see what the future holds.
