The Board of Directors unanimously approved a new rule, which begins January 1, 2022: “Bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) born January 1, 2022 and after will be required to have a genomic profile and parentage markers on file in order to register any progeny with the American Shorthorn Association”. This means that regardless of service type Natural or AI, all bulls (Shorthorn & ShorthornPlus) used for breeding need to be genomically tested (currently, this is the 100K test but could be subject to change according to Neogen standards in the future). This pertains to AI sires as well as pasture sires/clean up bulls. The rule only affects bulls born after Jan 1, 2022, so this rule won’t really come into play until their progeny are born, late 2023 or 2024. Please be aware that AI sires still require the 3 genetic conditions as well – TH, PHA, and DS.

Send DNA Directly to Neogen As a reminder, breeders can now send DNA samples directly to Neogen for testing rather than sending to the ASA office first. Starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will be incurred for those samples sent to the office for preprocessing. 3 things will be required to send samples in for testing: 1. A registration (or recorded “U”) number for each tested animal 2. A paper copy of the finalized testing form, (emailed from staff, description below) which includes the Neogen order number 3. A barcode number for each animal tested Breeders can queue up animals for testing in DigitalBeef and select which sample types they have, as well as which tests they want. Once the form is submitted, (it’s not entirely an automated process) staff will process the testing request and get an order ID # from Neogen. A finalized printable PDF of the submission form will be emailed to print and send to the lab with samples. Checks/payments are still made to the ASA. Once staff approves the testing request, the breeder’s DigitalBeef account is billed accordingly.

Association Outlook

Montie D. asa executive Soules secretary/CEO

Demanding Quality

T

his month has traditionally been the beginning of the holiday season. I needed to do a little shopping in early October and the stores already had Christmas decorations and holiday items on the shelf. It was still weeks from Halloween. The retail holiday marketing has grown out of control. Maybe we, in the purebred industry, should learn from this early activity, follow the retailers’ model and get people thinking about and looking at Shorthorns year-round. The fall sale season is in full swing and at this point it is obvious that the very top end of our breed is bringing higher premiums than ever. Buyers are interested in quality and will pay for it. There is less demand for individuals who do not excel in phenotype and documentation. This trickle-down effect is seen in the meat markets as well. Animals with genetics proven to grade choice or better are in demand as we are experiencing one of the strongest markets in history. At the same time, there is not much demand for cattle that grade select or lower. In fact, the price for lower-grading animals has a broader spread and a lower price than ever before. The industry is focusing on quality; feedlots are gnomically testing new arrivals for grade choice when finished. Those that don’t make the mark are moved through the system and sold within days. The technology calculates the cost of production vs. the market acceptability which is not there for cattle that don’t grade choice or higher. This is not just a trend in the beef market. This drift is being seen in most commodity items including automobiles, housing, apparel, tires, oil, lawnmowers, and furniture. The movement is stronger than ever and spills over to include the food we select at the grocery store. The 10

consumer selects for quality and prefers some type of documentation to prove its worth. Society demands that today’s prices warrant superior products in everything they purchase. We, as Shorthorn breeders are not exempt from this movement. The demand for quality is real. It is up to us as producers to provide that product. If at times, we get disappointed, we need to step back and take another look to be sure our product is meeting the quality of the demand. It’s not what we think is good enough, it’s what the consumer or market is demanding that should be our target for premiums. Quality in today’s world is defined by multiple aspects including looks, documentation for strength, longevity, and durability. Through the tools of genomics, EPDs and Indexes, we have access to the important traits that establish the value of our product. It is important to utilize these tools to help ensure a high-quality product. The development for quality with documentation has shaped the new cattle show to be launched at the Cattlemen’s Congress in January 2024 called Exposition Driving Genetic Excellence (EDGE). This new concept assigns equal importance to an animal’s looks and the performance data of that individual. All participating animals must be gnomically tested and have genomic-enhanced EPDs. This is a perfect example of evaluating our product to ensure we have the total quality package the industry demands which will add value in the marketplace. This month is a special time for all of us. We are proud of the family heritage of our breed and feel the understanding and importance when we trumpet the Shorthorn breed as “The Family Friendly

shorthorn country • november 2023

Breed”. As we celebrate Thanksgiving, one of the biggest family holidays for most of us, be thankful for our special breed of cattle and the people who nurture and produce them. Enjoy your family and cherish the times you can get together. It truly is a wonderful feeling to have loved ones around you. Be grateful for friends in all parts of your lives. Reach out and tell them how you feel. Keep in mind how much a 2-minute conversation can mean to folks near to those at a distance. The Shorthorn Fraternity has a special relationship like no other breed of cattle. I know I am thankful for being part of this great breed and the people in it. I believe many more like me have lifelong friends and family who make up the best beef breed of cattle, the Shorthorn.

Maternally Oriented Data As a smaller breed in the seedstock segment of our industry, a common refrain I hear is “We need more data!” We aren’t alone in this sentiment, as all the progressive breed organizations and breeders are pushing for more data all the time. Unfortunately, some of them have 5, 10 maybe even 20 time the number of head to collect data on compared to us at Shorthorn, accelerating their abilities. When you have more cattle, you can get more data! As Shorthorn cattle are viewed for their merits as a maternal force in the industry, there is an obvious source for collecting more data points without having to grow our numbers exponentially. That source is the Shorthorn mother cow. Here are three data points that you should be collecting on your females as we try to keep breeding better Shorthorn females for the entire commercial cattle industry. Udder Scores The scoring of a cow’s udder in beef production is based off two characteristics: teat size and udder suspension. Both are evaluated on a 1 to 9 scale, with increasing numeric values being viewed as the more desirable score for a cow to have. An udder suspension score of 1 is a blown-out udder, while a 9 is held super tight to the cow’s body, with degrees in between from 2 to 8. For teat size, a 1 is a balloon teat that a calf likely can’t nurse, while 9s are super small. This data is best collected by the same person within the first 24 hours after a cow calves. Using the same set of eyes and the same timeframe should eliminate inconsistencies in the data collection. As you track udder scores over time, you start to realize which female lines start their careers with good udders, which ones might see udder quality deteriorate quickly, and which ones were never very good in the first place! 14

Mature Cow Weight We weight our calves when they are born, when they come off the cow at weaning, and near their first birthday. After that, however, we need to do a better job collecting weights on the females we keep in the herd. There is so much talk of cow size in the industry today and how many commercial cows are getting too big. If you don’t know what your cows weigh, how do you know if you are helping make more big cows or offering an opportunity to moderate mature cow size in the commercial market? You can collect cow weights plenty of times throughout the year: when they come through the chute for spring vaccinations, at weaning time, turning out to grass, before calving. If you collect weights more than once a year, you’ll see the fluctuations in the annual cycle. Comparing to the same time year to year will show you how much your cows are growing (or what age they hit mature weight). One of the oldest ways of tracking efficiency in our industry is determining the percentage of body weight that a cow weans with her calf. Without knowing a cow weight, this metric is difficult to calculate. While technology and science have made determining efficiency more complex, percentage of body weight weaned is still a simple, effective way to see which cows are working hard to stay in your herd compared to who might be coasting by doing less. Body Condition Scores Body condition scores (BCS) are requested when you turn in a mature cow weight data point. A cow’s BCS is measured on a 1 to 9 scale from severely emaciated (1) to morbidly obese (9). Most cows in the seedstock world are likely going to score between a 3 and a 7 on the BCS scale, except for the old

shorthorn country • november 2023

donor cows who eat well while she’s at the flush facility. Why does this data matter when you’ve already weighed the cow? Well, because a 1,400 lb. cow comes in several frame sizes, shapes, and levels of fleshing! Body condition score is a variable accounted for in the calculation of Mature Cow Weight EPDs in many breed associations that publish that metric. While we do not have one currently, IGS is working on bring a Mature Cow Weight EPD to the partner breed associations soon as another tool in your genetic selection tool kit. Cows on the low end of the BCS scale are more apt to have problems with breeding back. By tracking BCS scores, you can better know if your cows are in proper condition heading into breeding or calving season. If you collect this data early enough, you can give yourself the chance to change nutrition plans to add some condition to a lighter set of cows. All three of these data points can be recorded into the Digital Beef system for your herd. With numeric scales like these traits are measured on, there is some subjectivity to the reporting. That is why it is important to have the same set of eyes evaluating a group, or if that isn’t feasible, talk with those you work with. Go through a set of cows together and record your data independently, then compare notes and see if you’re on the same page or need to train each other more to what you are seeing. Please reach out if you have questions on submitting these data points and we will be glad to steer you in the right direction.

Embracing Gratitude: Family, Friends, and Thankfulness sales, exchanging thoughts about cattle while sharing laughter and camaraderie. One of the most remarkable aspects of being thankful is its simplicity. It doesn’t require extraordinary circumstances; it can be recognized through the ordinary moments that make up our day-to-day lives. When we take the time to reflect on our daily experiences and express gratitude for the people, opportunities, and moments that bring us joy and support, we unlock a treasure trove of thankfulness. As I reflect on the past year, my heart brims with gratitude. It has been a year filled with opportunities, laughter, and an overwhelming outpouring of support from friends and family. To all those who have been part of my wild journey called life, your contributions never go unnoticed. As we step into the winter months, I extend my warmest wishes for good luck and good health to all. Remember to stay warm and take a moment to say “thank you” from time to time—I know I don’t personally say it nearly enough.

Words of Advice

Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts. - Winston Churchill

Fall has always held a special place in my heart. It serves as a gentle reminder to embrace gratitude. This season is filled with occasions, including sales, shows, and cherished family gatherings, all of which contribute to the fall’s unique charm. Thanksgiving, in particular, has been a cherished tradition in my family for as long as I can recall. It’s a time when my sprawling family converges upon our home, dedicating the day to preparing food, sharing hearty laughter, and recounting stories until we can hardly catch our breath. It’s cherished moments like these that fill my heart with gratitude for the presence of everyone in my life. Fall, for me, is not solely about family and food; it’s also about shows and sales where Shorthorn breeders and juniors come together, forging new friendships, and nurturing old ones. We gather around stalls at events like Louisville, savoring the camaraderie during activities such as Deck the Stalls, and making time for heartwarming reunions with longtime friends. Additionally, we’re fortunate to engage in meaningful conversations during

Updates ASA IMPORTANT

FROM THE

New Rule for Milking Shorthorn/Lincoln Red Dual Registration As of July 1, 2023, all Milking Shorthorn and Lincoln Red cattle that are to be brought into the American Shorthorn Association herd book as dual registered animals must be tested as an AI sire or donor dam prior to herd book acceptance, due to the lack of information available in their online registries.

Update for DNA Testing Starting July 1, 2023, all animals tested through the American Shorthorn Association must have a registration or recorded number to be accepted for testing. This is only a slight adjustment to the current rule, which applies to samples sent directly to the lab. This rule adjustment includes any animal tested – whether the samples are sent directly to the lab or to the ASA office for pre-processing. Also starting July 1, 2023, a manual processing fee will also be incurred for those samples sent to the office for preprocessing. We are trying to encourage breeders to send their samples directly to Neogen, once their DNA submission form is approved and in their hands. If there is an error in the registry holding your animal up from being pushed through as registered, you would need to go the ‘recorded number’ route. In the birth entry screen, you can un-check the ‘Register?” box, re-validate, and commit your animal to the registry as recorded to receive that ‘U’ recorded number.

New Digital Invoicing for ASA I. n an effort to reduce the amount of paper sent out of the office, statements will now be emailed, rather than printed. Please be sure to double-check that you have a correct email on file in the registry. If you wish to continue with the printed version, simply log into your DigitalBeef account and go to the ‘Prefs’ tab to update your Invoicing preference (see screenshot). You can also call the office to make the switch.

Tyler DeGroot Edgerton, Minnesota

What is one must have item at a cattle show? Why? Feed scoop, because I always forget to bring one along! What’s your favorite song? “Shake The Frost” by Tyler Childers What is your favorite cattle show you have exhibited at? Why? My favorite shows are Cattlemans Congress and the National Western. I like getting to see all the people I have met across the country who share the same passion as me and I enjoy competing against so many great cattle.
