SPOTLIGHT: DAN O’DONNELL AND AL & BETTY MCNAUGHTON
Dan O’ Donnell and Al and Betty McNaughton show their support of EBC in many ways. Not only are they committed to volunteering their time each week, but they are also financial donors as well. In addition to the warehouse space at the EBC - Central Hub in Issaquah, Issaquah Highlands Self Storage in Issaquah, Marymoor Self Storage in Redmond and Red Way Self-Storage in Redmond donate space for donations. While having the space is great, they wouldn’t get out to kids in need without the help and dedication from our volunteers. Dan O’Donnell and his in-laws, Al and Betty McNaughton, are three volunteers that help make this process possible every week. Dan, Al and Betty started volunteering in 2014 and, together, they have contributed 658 volunteer hours at EBC. Each week, Dan, Al and Betty go to Marymoor Self Storage to pick up the donations that have been dropped off in there. They then load everything into Dan’s truck and take all of the donations to EBC so volunteers can sort everything and get it all back out to the kids in need in our community. The happiest of holidays to all of our EBC family! This is my favorite time of year, and I am excited for a great holiday season. All three of our hubs (Central in Issaquah, Northshore in Kenmore and West Sound in Bremerton) will be hives of activity getting items ready for kids and families. If you haven’t volunteered at EBC in a while, it’s a great time to reconnect! I want to welcome our new EBC – West Sound Hub Coordinator, Ashley Hutchison. Ashley will be working with our west sound communities and volunteers to ensure that kids in Kitsap and northern Pierce Counties (Hood Canal to Tacoma Narrows bridges) have what they need to thrive! Recently the staff and Board of EBC have been working on an important project - our Theory of Change (TOC). What the TOC helps us do is create, in simple terms, the “why” of EBC in the community. It is critical that we understand what we are trying to change for kids and families so that our program can be-laser focused on success. We all know what and how EBC does its work – collecting and purchasing much needed items for kids and families and distributing them through a network of service providers and agencies. This ensures that the items that children and their families get are what is needed most for the family’s success. In the Theory of Change, we look at how these things, fundamentally, make a difference (or create change) for families. What research shows us is that when families are able to meet their children’s basic needs (clothing, food, diapers, etc.) their stress is reduced and they have the opportunity to focus on other family needs. This reduction in stress can lead to building family strength and resilience while preventing child abuse and neglect. And when combined with the supports provided by our agency partners, we can help move families to self-sufficiency and success. Working together, our volunteers, donors and partners, ultimately help create a stronger, healthier community. As we celebrate the holiday season and prepare for the New Year, we get an opportunity to reflect on the year that has just passed and all we have accomplished. Thanks to you, EBC has been able to provide hundreds of thousands of diapers, thousands of jars of food and formula, and essential clothing and school supplies for thousands of children. And as we know through our Theory of Change, this helps move families forward. Officers of the Board:

EBC – Northshore Receives Holiday Fund-a-Need from Bothell Chamber
Each year, the Bothell Chamber of Commerce selects a non-profit for their “Fund-a-Need” and this year the EBC - Northshore Hub in Kenmore was chosen. The Bothell Chamber’s Holiday Dinner & Auction on November 10th, raised $3,200 for EBC - Northshore. As of October 26th, 2017, EBC has given out 1,395 car seats, valued at $68,470.64. To date, EBC has hosted six Car Seat Checks, checking 85 seats and serving 57 families. “Many people believe that you can take your car seat to a fire station to have them checked and installed, however that isn’t the case. Due to liability (most) fire departments are no longer assisting with car seat installation and often don’t know where to send parents to get help. Eastside Fire & Rescue reached out to EBC in 2016 asking about a partnership between our organizations to bring more opportunities for car seat safety to the communities they serve. Carter Call Hosts Largest Collection Drive for EBC to Date
For his Collection Drive, Carter Call donated 4,069 items— making this our largest Collection Drive to date! Items included 2,150 clothing items, 876 toys, 353 books, and 152 pairs of gloves and hats. In addition, Carter donated larger items, including 1 stroller, 1 small bike, 1 scooter and 1 play gym. John Winder Collection Drive Collects 1,400 School Supplies
T-Mobile Purchased 300+ Backpacks, Plus School Supplies & Volunteered to Assemble Them A Huddle Up Volunteer Grant from T-Mobile purchased 300+ backpacks and the school supplies to fill them. T-Mobile volunteers spent two Saturdays assembling the backpacks for EBC to give out to local kids so they were ready to go for the first day of school. Thank you, Angela and the Huddle Up program!
John Winder and his Eagle Scout Troop #698 held a School Supply Collection Drive for EBC and donated 1,400 school supplies!
Concur Partners with EBC for SAP Global Month of Service During the month of October, Concur partnered with EBC as a part of their SAP Global Month of Service. During this time, Concur hosted collection boxes on each of their 11 floors at their Bellevue office collecting items from our High Needs list. Concur also sent a volunteer group to EBC to help with sorting clothes and toys during October.
Local Family Hosts Haunted House Benefitting EBC For the second year in a row, the Lopez family in Sammamish has hosted a Haunted House that took collections of kid’s items for EBC. This year they brought in over $950 in financial donations and over $500 in children’s items. This more than doubles what they brought in last year! The Lopez family’s children and their friends volunteered to run the haunted house.
