SCOTT HARRIS Beacon Foundation CEO Scott Harris wears a few hats. As we approach Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in February, we spoke about how S.H.E Gynae is making a difference for Tasmanians living with cancer and how it helped his own family.

Where did you grow up and where do you live now? I grew up in the northern suburbs of Hobart, in Rosetta. My mum still lives in the family home there. I now live in Sandy Bay. You lead Beacon Foundation, you chair S.H.E. Gynaecological Cancer Group, and sit on the JackJumpers board — three very different organisations. What connects this work for you? If anything, it’s that all three make a meaningful contribution to Tasmanian society and provide support and hope for Tasmanians of all ages. I’ve been CEO of Beacon for 26 years. We aren’t perfect, but we genuinely strive to ensure young people can reach their true potential.

S.H.E. is about creating something for Tasmanians who are doing it tough, and ensuring there is a suitable facility - as exists in all other states - that provides emotional care, support and navigation in a peaceful, sanctuary-like setting.

Hobart has been sadly lacking this type of facility, which is why we’ve been the driving force behind building the Wellness Centre. My late wife Jo found it appalling that Hobart didn’t have such a facility, having witnessed firsthand the difference it made in Melbourne during her treatment. It’s been a tough journey knockback after knockback and plenty of frustration. There were times I could have given up, but it’s simply too important to let go. I’m incredibly grateful for the support of former Premier Peter Gutwein, and then Health Minister, now Premier, Jeremy Rockliff and the Tasmanian Government. I’m also deeply thankful for my close network who never lost faith - Greg, Kate and Ben especially - and now Alex and Mike, who are driving the project forward. Thanks to the University of Tas8

mania, we have a perfect location in the former Theatre Royal Hotel.

Lastly, but no less importantly, the JackJumpers provide Tasmanians with hope and joy by competing on a national stage.

They send a clear message that no matter where you come from, you can mix it with the best — living in Tasmania should never limit what you can achieve. The JackJumpers have also played a critical role in my own personal journey. When life became incredibly tough, they wrapped their arms around my family and brought us joy during a time of deep sadness, while Jo was fighting for her life. The friendship and generosity of Christine, Steve, Scott and Larry, and the broader JackJumpers family, will never be forgotten.

After the loss of your wife Jo in 2023, how has your advocacy for gynaecological cancer awareness and support evolved? It was an incredibly sad time and, in many ways, it gave me a renewed sense of purpose — one that feels closely aligned with Jo. The focus hasn’t changed greatly: building the Wellness Centre and continuing to raise awareness about these insidious diseases. I still find it staggering that ovarian cancer has the same five-year survival rate today as it did in 1975. That’s simply unacceptable.

How is S.H.E. improving early awareness and support for women and families? By being more public about the work we do and openly talking about these diseases, we’re helping create awareness. Simply having the conversation can change lives. For some reason, women’s health issues can be difficult to talk about, but breaking that silence is crucial. The Teal Game hosted by the JackJumpers has been a powerful

awareness driver. So many women have stopped me in the street to say that, because of this awareness, they went to their GP for a check-up.

I think the most animated I’ve seen JackJumpers coach Scott Roth is when there has been a win during the JackJumpers Teal Round! What does this reaction mean to you? It’s deeply personal for Scott. He’s lost family members to cancer and was personally impacted by Jo’s journey. Jo very much embodied the JackJumpers spirit of “hungry and humble”. Scott has been pivotal to the success of the Teal Game — it means a great deal to him. The players and staff have all bought in; many sat with Jo as she shared her story, a journey faced by so many men and women.

Who do you admire? My fiancée, Jo Viney - a successful businesswoman and mum.

Favourite tv show? Yellowstone.

What was your first job? A porter at the Southport Townhouse in Hobart.

KATIE ROBERTSON From Rosehaven to Five Bedrooms, actor Katie Robertson is a familiar face on Australian screens - and increasingly, a creative force behind the camera.

Where did you grow up and where do you live now? I grew up on Paredarerme country and I’m lucky enough to still call it home. My husband and I live in a converted shed. A “shouse”, if you will!

Readers will likely have seen you in TV shows such as Five Bedrooms and Rosehaven. What are you working on next? I’ve spent the last couple of years exploring roles behind the camera.

I have a TV show in development with Endemol Shine Australia and a short film I've written and directed that will make its way out into the world next year. I was also the Showrunners’ Associate on Deadloch season two, coming to Amazon Prime early next year which I'm practically peeing with excitement about.

But yes, more TV is always in the works.

I think where I'm at in my life right now I’m slightly more selective (as much as I can be). It has to be the right project and more importantly, the right people.

You're featuring in this summer's Shakespeare in the Garden season, in Much Ado About Nothing. What can the audience expect from the performance? I love Much Ado. It’s brilliantly funny and features my favourite romantic sparring partners in Beatrice and Benedick, but it also carries a surprising undercurrent of darkness and consequence. That balance is what makes it feel so juicy and alive. I think it’s shockingly topical. But don’t worry, predominantly audiences can expect to be thoroughly entertained, there’s plenty of wit, romance and mischief and if we’re lucky maybe the story can linger beyond the garden gates and spark a few robust conversations on the drive home. We’re approaching the production with a lot of joy, and if nothing else, I hope that sense of play and generosity is something the audience really feels.

Is it different preparing for a role played outdoors? Aside from having to take a Telfast before rehearsals, not really!

How does being in Tasmania affect your work - both in the roles you take and the life you lead outside work?

I’m a Tassie girl through and through. I don’t want to live anywhere else. But in order to sustain a career, realistically, it means leaving the state for parts of the year. I feel really lucky that I've been able to make a home here, a base I can always come back to during the inevitable quiet periods between jobs. But I’d love to work here more. Part of the reason I've extended my craft to behind the camera is because it’s very important to me to contribute to our local screen industry in a more substantial way. I want to help create an industry where younger actors and crew have the option to build viable careers without having to leave home.

What’s something you wish more people knew about what you do? Maybe how un-glamorous it actually is.

Who do you admire? Palliative care nurses. They are made of special stuff.

Favourite podcast or tv show? I listen to Good Hang with Amy Poehler weekly.

Actually, I lie. I watch the podcast. Because that’s a thing that apparently we’re doing now.

What was your first job? I worked at Subway in North Hobart. The smell still haunts me.

What are your daily news/social media habits? I deleted Instagram and Facebook about five months ago and haven’t looked back. We have an old radio my husband turns on in the mornings to get our daily dose of the news but that’s about it.

Your favourite place for…

Breakfast: Ooooh. This is tough and you can’t make me choose just one. I’d go for either a morning bun from Pigeon Hole, a croissant from Six Russell or the hot cake from Born in Brunswick.

Lunch: Bream Creek Vineyard Cellar Door for a Tongola goat’s cheese board and a glass (okay, bottle) of their Pinot Gris.

Dinner: Da Angelo in Battery Point.

Their food is like a hug. And Angelo and his team’s service is unmatched.

Dream holiday destination? I want to take my son to Japan during Cherry Blossom season.

Secret vice? I don’t know about vice, or secret, but there’s nothing quite like hitting up the 24 hour Kmart in New Town after hours.

Favourite Tasmanian secret? You can buy a dozen fresh oysters from the Dunalley servo.

What are you reading now? I’ve just finished A Catalogue of Love by Tassie writer Erin Hortle. I adored it. Actually I want to talk to her about making that a

PERMITS FOR FIRES NOW With a warmer and drier January forecast, fire permits are now permitted statewide and campfire bans are in place in many national parks and reserves for the season. The Tasmania Fire Service declared a statewide fire permit period as of 16 December last year, with Deputy Chief Officer Matt Lowe saying the period was instated then based on current and forecast conditions. “By introducing fire permits, we are implementing measures to allow Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) to mandate and monitor fires in the landscape during expected spikes in fire danger and mitigate the risk of bushfires as best as possible,” he said.

“This declaration of a Fire Permit Period (FPP) does not stop landowners burning on their properties, a Fire Permit reduces the risk of escaped fires by promoting responsible use of fire and enables TFS to monitor controlled burning given the impending increased fire danger.” Mr Lowe reiterated the TFS advice to be prepared this season: “I’d like to remind people of the importance to be prepared this summer and to have a plan to keep safe if they’re impacted by a bushfire,” he said. “Know your risk, develop and practice bushfire plans, know how to access alerts and warnings through TasALERT.com or the TasALERT app.”

Seasonal campfire bans will also apply to all national parks and reserves within the Dorset, Break O’Day and Glamorgan-Spring Bay municipalities as well as Flinders Island, Maria Island and Narawntapu National Park, Tooms Lake Conservation Area and Snaky Creek Conservation Area. NEW INFRASTRUCTURE FOR LAUDERDALE PRIMARY Lauderdale Primary School recently completed a $6.5 million redevelopment of modern and flexible learning spaces, with Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, attending the opening with students, school staff and the community recently.

Lauderdale Primary is one of the largest schools in Tasmania and the fastest growing on Hobart’s Eastern Shore and this redevelopment will cater for the increasing number of students. “Our Government is delivering the education facilities our young people need, with additional funds to support the resurfacing of the outdoor courts at Lauderdale Primary,” Minister Palmer said.

But did you know there’s a commitment to keep school sports facilities open for the public to use? “Through the recent election we re-iterated our commitment to opening school gates and giving the public access to school ovals and sports courts, including indoor basketball courts. Funded through the Tasmanian Government’s $10 million Playground and Sports Courts Program, once completed these will make sure the school’s facilities can be used by the community where suitable and there is capacity.” Playground and Sports Courts Program projects are currently being processed for Elizabeth College, New Norfolk Primary School, Newstead College, and Rosny College.

SHOPLIFTING BLITZ A two day police blitz on retail crime recently resulted in 38 arrests and the recovery of thousands of dollars worth of stolen items. The operation involved 35 businesses and 70 stores across the state in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie. Tasmania Police members from task forces Saturate, Accountable, Respect, Scelus and Raven were involved (we feel like some of those taskforce names are significantly cooler than others), as were uniformed cops, detectives and specialist resources. The result was the processing of 60 offenders ranging in age from 13 to 55, 38 arrests, 16 summonses and six youth diversions.

53 of the 60 were identified as repeat offenders. Commonly targeted items included clothing, sunglasses, groceries, and household goods. It’s believed future operations are planned, and in the meantime members of the public can play their own role in lowering retail crime by checking out Crime Stoppers Tasmania’s Know Them? Name Them! campaign, which uses social media to help identify suspected shoplifters and reduce retail crime. Crime Stoppers Tasmania chair David Daniels said the joint initiative with Tasmania Police had helped identify almost 70 suspects over a seven-month period. “We encourage people to visit crimestopperstas.com.au and view the open cases,” Mr Daniels said. “This is a chance for people to speak up and help police, help local business, and help the community as a whole.” To report retail crime, call police on 131 444 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

OUR MUSEUM IS A STAR TMAG, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, stars in a new ABC series this year. Tonight at the Museum sees celebrity contestants go head-to-head in a series of games inspired by priceless objects from the TMAG collection.

SUMMER TEMPS WARNING As much as we are grateful for some summer heat after a long winter, Tasmanians are being warned to be aware of the dangers of heat-related illness this season. Warmer temperature can affect Tasmanians, who are not used to them, more than others, and it is important to be prepared. Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr Scott McKeown recommends you: • Plan your day to avoid strenuous activities and being outdoors, especially during the hottest part of the day.

• Stay out of the sun as much as possible. If you need to go outside, wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and seek shade.

• Use fans or air-conditioners and close blinds or curtains to keep heat out.

• Keep windows and doors shut if it’s hotter outside than inside and reopen them when it cools down.

• Drink plenty of water even if you're not thirsty.

• Never leave children or pets in cars.

• Check on family, friends and neighbours - especially those who may be more vulnerable to heat.

The long-range forecast shows a similar outlook to last year's summer condition, with potentially warmer than usual temperatures on the way. Bureau of Meteorology Senior Meteorologist Luke Johnston said: "The forecast shows an increased risk of heatwave potential due to the expectation for warmer than usual daytime temperatures, but especially warmer night time temperatures and higher humidities.” If you think you or someone within you might have a heat-related illness seek medical advice from your GP or by calling healthdirect on 1800 022 222. On a hot day, if you or someone near you is very unwell and does not respond to cooling and rehydration quickly, call triple zero and ask for an ambulance.

TASSIE SALMON OFF THE TABLE? Has the use of the antibiotic florfenicol in the treatment of diseased Tasmanian salmon got mainland media questioning its consumption? In a recent feature for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, food writer and reviewer Dani Valent reviewed the best and worst of supermarket salmon from overseas ahead of Christmas, specifically addressing the question, “Want smoked salmon on the Christmas table but avoiding the Tassie stuff?” In the article, Dani explains, “For decades, it’s been a no-brainer to reach for Tasmanian smoked salmon at this time of year. Since the 1980s, Atlantic salmon has been raised in fish farms in the cool waters south of Bass Strait, then processed locally into a cured product. But many consumers have become concerned about damage to sensitive marine and coastal environments, large-scale fish mortalities, and abundant antibiotic use that affects native lobster and fish and, potentially, the humans who consume them.”

MAKING MOUNTAIN RIVER ROAD AND HUON HIGHWAY SAFER Construction works to improve pedestrian safety at the Mountain River Road and Huon Highway intersection will begin soon. A final concept design for the changes was released recently following public consultation. Safety was the most frequently raised concern, with community feedback highlighting issues such as speed limits, limited visibility, and the need for safe pedestrian crossing points at the bus stops. Changes to the design prioritise pedestrian safety and bus stop accessibility, and improve visibility for all road users.

Construction is planned for early this year, with initial works focusing on: • relocating the two existing bus stops to a straighter and flatter section of the Huon Highway, approximately 100m south of the intersection • installing a new pedestrian island to allow pedestrians to cross the highway in two stages, making it safer and more manageable • installing new street lighting to improve visibility for both pedestrians and drivers • building new footpaths and a road barrier to provide safe, direct access to and from the bus stops at Turn Creek and Mountain River roads, helping separate pedestrians from traffic.

INTERSTATE MEDICATION CHANGES This year Tasmanians will be able to access certain medicines, including some commonly used for ADHD, prescribed interstate. The Poisons Amendment (Interstate Prescriptions) Bill passed the Legislative Council late last year, meaning Tasmanian pharmacists will be able to dispense certain prescriptions issued by interstate practitioners for medicines

(provided it complies with existing State requirements). This includes psychostimulants commonly used to treat ADHD, opioids, medicinal cannabis and benzodiazepines. The reforms are also relevant to visitors to Tasmania who bring valid prescriptions with them, allowing local pharmacists to dispense their medicines safely and efficiently.

PRINCE OF WALES TO GO The Prince of Wales Hotel in Battery Point will be demolished to make way for a new accommodation development. The recently approved development application includes getting rid of the current red brick hotel building, built in 1967, and replacing it with a three-storey complex of 13 visitor accommodation units, a bar and cafe, two townhouses, and a 37-spot basement car park.

BLUE TREE AXED An iconic bright blue tree that was a symbol of mental health awareness along the Midland Highway has been cut down. The tree, between Perth and Longford, was cut following fire damage that left it unsafe. The gum had been painted blue in The Blue Tree.

RICHIE PORTE RIDES FOR BROTHER Cycling champ Ritchie Porte was among a group of inspiring Tasmanians to recently ride 500km on their bikes to raise awareness for mental health, riding in honour of the brother he recently lost.

Ritchie and his friend, Hayden Armstong, chair of the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation, took part in the global Festive 500 challenge but instead of the usual eight days to cover the 500km they did it in a gruelling four! They were raising money and awareness for mental health care through the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation.

This year’s ride had immense personal meaning, with Porte joining the challenge less than two months after the tragic loss of his brother Tom Porte, riding in Tom’s honour and shining a light on the urgent need for greater mental health support in Tasmania. Hayden Armstrong, who lives with multiple sclerosis, took on this enormous feat and was driven by a passion for funding medical research and improving care for Tasmanians doing it tough.

Throughout the journey they were joined by groups of local riders who supported the duo with conversation and pedal power. Hayden Amstrong said: “Cycling is really important to me, and it's more than just a hobby. I live with multiple sclerosis (MS) and staying active helps me manage some of the daily challenges of MS, while also giving me a boost in mental health and wellbeing. So I'm really passionate about the benefits of physical exercise, and the positive impact it can have on your overall health.” At the time of print, they’d more than doubled their fundraising goal with donations still open at bit.ly/ rhhrf-haydens-festive-500.

TASSIE COACHES STEP INTO JUNIOR MATILDAS CAMP The CommBank Junior Matildas recently wrapped up a national training camp from 23–29 November, finishing the week with two international matches against Thailand’s U16s in Sydney and Gosford as part of ASEAN - Australia Women’s Football Week. Chelsea Wing and Alfred Hess, the Football Tasmania Greater North and South Lead Coaches, were invited into camp as assistant coaches. The opportunity allowed both coaches to work inside a national team environment, gaining valuable high-performance experience alongside some of the country’s best emerging players. Most importantly, that knowledge now comes back into Tasmanian football. Experiences like this help strengthen development

TOP RUNNERS COME TO TASSIE Some of Australia's best track athletes, including Olympians and Paralympians will be racing on local soil next month.

Hobart will host the Hobart Track Classic, part of the World Athletic Continental Tour. It’s a ‘bronze level’ meet that will give competitors the chance to earn world ranking points, prize money, and possibly impress selectors ahead of the Commonwealth Games and World Under 20 Championships. Olympic finalist and proud Tasmanian product Stewart McSweyn said he is looking forward to seeing Tasmanian locals embrace athletics in their own backyard: "Tasmania is where my athletics journey started, so having a major meet here means a lot.

The support from people back home has always pushed me even after moving away from home, and I’m excited that they'll now be able to see some of Australia's favourite athletes compete in person." The event, on 28 February at the Domain Athletics Centre, will be the second of four one-day high performance meets across the country, joining the Perth Track Classic, Adelaide Track Classic and the Maurie Plant Meet before the Australian Athletics Championships takes place in Sydney.

16-18 January This is the 36th year of the boutique Tamar Valley Folk Festival, featuring loads of Tasmanian and mainland artists. The three day event of Music, song, dance and poetry offers concerts, themed concerts, workshops, a Saturday morning market and much more.

31 January Developed by QVMAG, ArtRage is Tasmania’s premier student art exhibition. This annual curated exhibition showcases the creativity and talent of Year 11 and 12 art students from across the state.

Since its launch in 1994, this exhibition continues to provide an important platform for students studying art as part of their Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), while supporting and celebrating the creativity and talent of budding artists state-wide. Opens 31 January until 3 May at the Imveresk site, 2016. Free entry.

CURATING 40 YEARS OF TASMANIAN ART As Hobart's Bett Gallery approaches its 40th anniversary, the family-run institution reflects on four decades of championing contemporary art in Tasmania, built on enduring relationships, bold vision and a deep commitment to community. Third general gallerists Emma and Jack Bett reflect on this achievement.

What does this milestone mean to you personally and to the Bett family as third-generation gallerists? Forty years feels remarkable. As third-generation gallerists, we’re proud to continue a family legacy - from our grandmother, Elva Bett, a pioneer of New Zealand’s commercial galleries in the 1960s, to our parents, Dick and Carol Bett, who founded Bett Gallery in Hobart in 1986.

It’s also an opportunity to honour and acknowledge our mum, Carol, who has worked tirelessly for the gallery for 40 years, often behind the scenes. It’s really about the people – the artists and our wider community who have been part of this journey. These relationships are central to the gallery’s story and identity.

Can you take us back to the early days - what was Dick and Carol Bett’s original vision after moving from New Zealand? When Dick and Carol Bett returned to Hobart from New Zealand in the 1980s, the Hobart art scene was active but conservative. They wanted something different: a gallery dedicated to the very best contemporary art, with the

aim of building a vibrant Tasmanian art market. Dick got his start managing Chameleon, Hobart’s first artist-run initiative, where he met now-legendary Tasmanian artists including Raymond Arnold, David Keeling, and Helen Wright - it was these artists who would form the early foundations of Bett Gallery. Forty years later, many of these artists are still with us. That kind of loyalty says a lot about the gallery’s approach: trust, consistency, and providing steadfast support to artists at every stage of their careers.

Bett Gallery has evolved across several locations and eras. How has the gallery’s identity changed, or remained constant? We’ve definitely moved around, but the gallery has a strong identity, which has remained constant despite the different locations.

We began on the corner of Wooby’s Lane, Salamanca Place, then expanded to a larger space above the Salamanca Fruit Market. At the time, Salamanca was a vibrant hub for artists, but this changed, and in 2003 we moved to a classy shopfront on Elizabeth Street in North Hobart,

in the historic Soundy’s building. People still talk about its iconic art-filled streetfront windows. After Dick passed away in 2011, the gallery entered a new phase, and in 2018 we relocated to our current architecturally-designed CBD space - a larger, flexible space with movable walls and an Upper East Side feel. We love it here and we can present a much larger program, with the capacity to host two exhibitions at one time.

The gallery has championed more than 100 Tasmanian artists. What does it mean to you to have played a role in shaping these careers? It means a lot. Our stable holds many artists who have had both national and international success; recently, our international sales included purchases by the National Gallery of the USA and the Harvard University Collection. Our senior artists have been part of our lives since we were young, so we’ve experienced their journeys along the way. As we continue to support them, we focus on establishing our emerging and mid-career artists’ development which is both inspiring and rewarding.

What do the long-standing artist relationships reveal about the gallery’s philosophy and approach? Longevity matters to us. Working with artists over decades is what defines Bett Gallery. It’s not just about exhibitions; it’s about trust, support, and showing up year after year.

Seeing artists’ careers evolve and being part of that journey is hugely fulfilling, and it really reflects our approach: relationships first, everything else follows.

Environmental and social consciousness have been part of Bett Gallery’s DNA. How does this align with your values? Right from the very beginning, community-focused exhibitions have been central to the Bett Gallery ethos. We see the gallery as a platform for sparking public dialogue and fostering meaningful engagement across a wide range of issues. Recent examples showcase this diversity: Watershed, marking the 50th anniversary of Lake Pedder, featured works by fifty leading Australian and international artists; The Footy Show celebrated the intersection of football and art; and Kanalaritja Tunapri encouraged intergenerational involvement in presenting works by Tasmanian Aboriginal stringers.

As siblings leading the gallery today, how do you balance honouring the family legacy with driving the gallery into its next chapter? We draw on

Discovering new talent and championing bold projects keeps the gallery lively and relevant, while maintaining impeccable standards ensures we always showcase the very best in contemporary art. With anniversary events planned for 2026, what can the community expect from the celebrations? We have an ex-

Looking to the future, what are your hopes for Bett Gallery’s next decade - both for the gallery itself and for the broader Tasmanian arts community?

It’s tough out there in the arts right now, but the gallery will continue to grow as a bold, dynamic space that not only presents the very best in contemporary art but also drives and supports a vibrant, forward-thinking arts scene in Tasmania and beyond for the decades ahead.

TASSIE MARKET WATCH Momentum Uptick in Hobart Real Estate The selling season momentum continued in the last months of 2025. National Australia Bank (NAB) reported that Hobart’s housing market maintained steady growth in November, with both houses and units recording price increases. House values rose 0.9% over the month, lifting quarterly growth to 1.9% and annual growth to 4.6%, bringing the median price to $749,079.

Units outperformed houses, growing 2.6% in November and 4.7% over the quarter, with annual growth at 5.0% and a median value of $567,828. This continued upswing highlights the resilience of Hobart’s market despite broader economic headwinds, with unit performance suggesting strong demand from downsizers and investors seeking more affordable entry points.

Extra funds on offer The expansion of the Home Guarantee Scheme from 1 October 2025 has provided extra support for eligible buyers by reducing the deposit requirements and helping more people enter the market. Since the end of September, Hobart has seen value growth across all price points, with the lower quartile leading the way, up 3.5%. The middle quartile rose 2.4%, while the upper quartile recorded a more modest 1.7% increase. This trend reflects the stronger demand for affordable properties, driven by government incentives and ongoing affordability pressures.

How about the rentals?

According to NAB, Hobart’s rental market remains one of the strongest in the country, with house rents up 6.2% over the past year and unit rents surging 8.8%. This growth ranks as the second highest among all capital cities, highlighting persistent demand and limited supply. Investors are also benefiting from attractive returns, with gross rental yields sitting at 4.3%, well above the national average of 3.6% and the combined capitals average of 3.4%. These conditions reinforce Hobart’s appeal as a high-yield market, particularly for those seeking strong rental performance alongside steady capital growth.

AMY SHERWIN'S WELCOME RETURN TO TASMANIA We also had a nightingale, a highly acclaimed singer of the late 1880s, nicknamed ‘The Tasmanian Nightingale’. Her name was Amy Sherwin, and she even met and became friends with her idol, Jenny Lind.

Opera singers were the Taylor Swifts of the nineteenth century. You may remember the character of Jenny Lind from the film, The Greatest Showman. Jenny Lind was an opera singer, known as the ‘Swedish Nightingale’.

Like her Swedish counterpart, our Nightingale also toured the world, singing in all the grand theatres in America, Europe, India, China, Japan, South Africa and Australia. She was the first Australian to achieve international success in the arts. Crowds amassed everywhere she went. People shouted themselves hoarse. People burst their gloves clapping! 3,000 people threw their hats in the air at Covent Garden!

She was also reported to be an exceptionally kind and generous person. She made time to meet and thank her admirers, one by one, long after she had finished a performance. She also put her family first on several occasions, returning to Tasmania to care for her parents, and caring for her daughter who eventually succumbed to tuberculosis.

Beautiful detailing

She never forgot Tasmania. She named one of the homes she bought in the UK, ‘Huonville’, and always included Tasmania on her world tours. She also performed for many fundraising concerts, especially those in aid of communities affected by bush fire, since her childhood home had been lost to fire.

While she was living in London, she taught several homeless girls to sing, a simple but profound gift which changed their lives dramatically.

Our Nightingale has not been as well remembered as Jenny Lind, but a group of Tasmanians are determined to change that. A committee of volunteers, led by Dr Bob Brown, are raising $200,000 to for a full-length marble statue of Amy Sherwin being made by acclaimed Australian sculptor Peter Schipperheyn. It’s an ambitious project, but Bob Brown is no stranger to ambitious projects.

CAPE DESLACS NATURE RESERVE PLANT TRAIL Looking down cliffs

Words and pictures: Elizabeth Osborne Cape Deslacs Nature Reserve Plant Trail, in the Clifton Beach Conservation Area, contains a wide diversity of native plants that have adapted to the light sandy soil and dry conditions.

The reserve is approximately 40 minutes south east of Hobart. Drive through Clifton Beach, turn left onto unsealed Bicheno Street. Drive approximately 1.5 kilometres, then turn right onto the gravel road that leads to the Cape Deslacs Nature Reserve carpark.

On the left of the road, before the carpark, a gap in the roadside fencing gives access to Cape Deslacs Track. The circuit track is unsigned, but its white sandy surface makes it clearly visible.

It is an easy walk along the Cape Deslacs Track through native coastal vegetation and wildlife, to the cliffs of Cape Deslacs. These sheer cliffs offer panoramic views stretching from Dodges Ferry, to Sloping Main and the Tasman Peninsula.

The track goes down a gentle slope to the commemorative plaque on the Cape Deslacs headland, recording the opening of the Clifton Beach Coastal Reserve in 1988. Large conifers that dominated the headland have been removed, revealing views over Clifton Beach, Pipe Clay Lagoon, extending as far as Kunanyi/Mount Wellington on the horizon.

Along the gravel access road that leads to the carpark are ten signs that highlight native plants suitable for home gardens.

The Cape Deslacs Nature Reserve Plant Trail is sheltered behind the dunes from coastal winds. The circuit track is a relaxing walk of approximately five kilometres along clear, white sandy tracks over generally level ground, with abundant native flowers to enjoy.

TOMATO AND CHICKEN PASTA Inspired by simple Italian home cooking, this summery tomato pasta is packed with vegetables. The celery, carrot and onion are known as soffritto, the basis of many Italian dishes.

INGREDIENTS • 3x400g tins of diced tomatoes • 1 onion, finely chopped • 2 sticks celery, finely chopped • 2 medium carrots, finely chopped • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 chicken breasts, cut into smaller cubes • White wine (optional) • Capers and pine nuts (optional) • 500g pack of pasta METHOD Finely chop the onion, celery and carrot. In a large frypan or large saucepan, fry the onion, celery, carrot and garlic in olive oil until softened. Add the cubed chicken and fry until sealed. Add tomatoes and ½ cup of water or white wine, and the capers and pinenuts if you’re using them. Add the lid and simmer for 20-30 minutes. Meanwhile, cook the pasta and then add pasta to the sauce to serve. Top with parsley and parmesan cheese. This is a great recipe to customise according to your preferences - you could consider adding fresh basil leaves, spinach, chorizo, bacon or mushrooms.

THE TASSIE BOOK CLUB The Woman Booker Prize Club is a local Hobart book club. Here they share their thoughts on books by Tasmanian authors, set in Tasmania, or about Tassie topics.

This month we review two books by palawa/pakana (Tasmanian Aboriginal) authors. In Trouwerner, Aunty Patsy Cameron takes a conversational approach to memoir and sharing wisdom, collaborating with Martin Flanagan and Kate Warner.

Adam Thompson’s short story collection, Born Into This, presents glimpses into different lives and ways of being Aboriginal in Tasmania today.

inghana petroglyphs, George Augustus Robinson’s mission, and back to Kate Warner’s family farm. A picture begins to emerge that emphasises relationality above all – each story shades its own unique part of a much bigger picture, but so gradually that a reader barely notices the process.

Although a far cry from a rom-com, this would nonetheless make an excellent ‘beach read’ this summer, especially for those in your life who tend more towards non-fiction. It’s also an excellent companion piece to Truganini by Cassandra Pybus, which I recently reviewed in this column.

Trouwerner is a wonderful, unassuming, understated contribution to the small but nevertheless substantial and growing crop of powerful First Nations stories from trouwerner/Lutruwita/Tasmania.

Born Into This comprises 16 stories that feel real, personal; deeply connected to communities and Country. What struck me most was how vividly Thompson captured the tensions between cultures and histories in day-to-day contexts. There’s pride, frustration, heartbreak and plenty of humour. I laughed out loud multiple times at perfectly pinpointed observations.

Trouwerner by Aunty Patsy Cameron and Martin Flanagan, (Magabala Books, February 2025) Review by Melanie Ross Aunty Patsy Cameron grew up on Flinders Island, steeped in the traditions of her First Nations ancestors yet living firmly in what us whitefellas would call the modern era.

This book is a wonderful conversation between Aunty Patsy, Martin Flanagan, and former Governor of Tasmania Kate Warner. Unlike anything else I have read, Flanagan centres Aunty Patsy’s deep cultural knowledge while contextualising white audiences’ understandings of both the history and the present of Tasmania.

Born Into This by Adam Thompson (UQP, February 2021) Review by Megan Tighe I had this on my TBR pile for over a year before I finally picked it up. I was instantly captured by the relatable, personal and vernacular story telling, and I didn’t put it down again until I’d finished the whole book in the same sitting.

In 2022, UQP announced they had acquired the rights to Adam Thompson’s next two books. We’re crossing our fingers and toes that we might see a new release this year!
