PROJECT OVERVIEW As human dominated areas increase with time, natural areas decrease making it more difficult for animals to create their own habitats. The project will explore and encourage the idea of reconciliation ecology which will facilitate in creating biodiversity between aquatic life and human life within an urban setting. Through the use of intensive research and interactive aquarium exhibits, the community will be stimulated to become better informed in order to ensure that they, as well as future generations, know how to preserve, conserve, and restore natural aquatic environments.

This chapter is a description of the evolution of the different typologies that the project has. Its is the breakdown history of the typologies as well as the current trends that each. After further evaluation the information is taken in order to create design guidance.

1960 • Early laboratories were relatively simple; they contained a work area and some storage (Watch, 2001).

• Laboratory design was modified, scientists felt the need for a space that was appropriate for their particular research (Braun & Gröming, 2005).

The laboratories are giving up the traditional setting of cubicles and fixed systems and adopting a new open plan layout. This layout brings more collaboration between workers and it will enhances productivity.

The Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida has visible lab spaces spread throughout the aquarium. The image on the left demonstrates the trend of transparency.

With all the controversy that has been surrounding aquariums in recent years, many aquariums want to be transparent when it comes to the conditions of their research labs and the treatment of the animals. Giving transparency to the user will create a bridge between the users and the scientist/aquarium staff in order to help the users to understand what is going on behind the scenes.

DESIGN GUIDANCE Labs should be a collaborative work space in order to improve efficiency of the research being conducted.

Research labs should have visual access to the general public to educate them.

The lab design should create a sense of connectivity between the users and the scientists while maintaining the appropriate levels of privacy and security..

1829 English doctor, Nathaniel Ward discovered that plants could live in confined glass spaces, which eventually became known as terrariums. Then it was discovered that they could support life and give out oxygen, giving birth to the new concept of aquariums (Clary & Wandersee, 2005).

1853 The first public aquarium was opened in Regents Park, London; it was called “The Fish House.” The popularity of this aquarium grew so quickly that new aquariums were opened in the U.S., Germany, and France (Clary & Wandersee, 2005).

The first aquarium in the United States opened; it was an extension of the Barnum American Museum, in New York. The addition of the aquarium was inspired by the Regents Park in London. There was still much to learn about the captivity of sea life (Clary & Wandersee, 2005).

1970-1990

This was the age of aquariums.

Approximately 61% of those in existence were established during these decades (Clary & Wandersee, 2005).

2005 In November 2005, the Georgia Aquarium was opened. It was the biggest aquarium in the world. It houses more than 100,000 marine species and holds 6.3 Million gallons of water(10 Largest aquariums in the world, 2015).

2014 Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, is now the biggest aquarium with 12.87 gallons of water.

It is part of the Hengqin Bay Hotel in Zhuhai (Miller, 2014).

AQUARIUM TRENDS As the years have passed, more and more discoveries have been made about the care of marine life in captivity. Most aquariums aim to educate the public and in order to do that, they need to create unique experiences.

Through the use of floor-to-ceiling aquariums, Georgia Aquarium guests are afforded the experiences of actually feeling as though they are underwater. This allows them to observe the animals’ behavior in an unforgettable way.

Recent aquariums are being built within architecture that is reminiscent of the ocean.

The building form of Den Bla Planet in Kastrup, Denmark, is based on the waves that are formed within a whirlpool. This motion determines the shape of the aquariums as well as the circulation.

The image to the left shows how the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, Florida incorporates naturalistic environments into exhibits. Like for the interactive exhibits, aquariums are changing the look of the exhibits to enhance the experience of the user. Natural elements of the setting of the animal living conditions are replicated and used sometimes to cover systems such as HVAC. The replica of this environment helps as well with the education of the users while at the exhibits.

DESIGN GUIDANCE The aquarium space should have immersive experiences that allow patrons to feel like they are in a naturalistic environment.

With the advancement of technology the traditional classroom setting has changed and so has the way of teaching. Students have the need to be stimulated in the classroom in order to learn. These are some of the current trends in education.: • Interactive experiences • Advanced technology • Learning on-the-go • Hybrid environments (online & in-person) • Simulating real work environments

EDEN HIGH SCHOOL By simulating a real-life working environment, students feel as though they are actual professionals within the field. The fact that this process is more engaging facilitates the different types of learning which includes active learning, audible learning, visual learning, and practical learning which make this setting more successful than traditional learning settings.

Instead of banning smartphones from the classroom, this school encourages the use of these devices as a learning tool. The younger generation has become so dependent on their smart devices that the integration of phones and tablets stimulates people to build a natural interest to the subject being taught.

Nowadays, aquariums are changing the way people interact with exhibits by leaving behind the traditional, enclosed tanks for the open tanks. By doing so, users in the space are able to interact with the animals and learn new things about them with the help of interacting with aquarium staff. It will also help the user to understand animals and their environment better and to respect them more.

DESIGN GUIDANCE Educational spaces should promote the different types of learning: audible, visual, real-world simulation and interactive. Education should also be integrated into the rest of the space, like the aquarium and research areas

This chapter provides a description of the selected building’s location and its surrounding area. The research is an in depth understanding of the building including it’s history and architectural features. Also covered are the sustainable features of the building with regards to transportation and pedestrian access.

The current function of this building is the marquee office of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune where news is broadcast and ads and articles for the newspaper are written. If a proposed project would possibly replace the intent of the existing structure, we believe, it should cater to the community’s appreciation of marine-life. Aside from the vast amount of restaurants and lounges around the site, there aren’t many opportunities for entertaining the neighborhood’s population. Creating a building with an aquarium for the observation of marine-life will gratify the community’s love for all things aquatic while bettering the environment through research.

The building itself, though still relatively new, has become an icon to the neighborhood in which it resides so whatever the building is, it should enhance and reflect the overall culture that is Sarasota.

...IN ITS IMMEDIATE AND GENERAL CONTEXT The Sarasota Herald-Tribune building is situated on the east side of the Sarasota Bay and is approximately 0.6 miles from the Bay. Mote Marine Laboratory will be the client of our facility and serve as a support facility to our project. Mote’s central facility is located directly across the Bay and is just 4.5 miles driving distance from the prospect site. Mote has many facilities located throughout the city and state and our site will be one of their branch facilities.

Sarasota is a city with a very strong sea culture; the city pays much attention to the rehabilitation of turtles and manatees and the conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems. The primary functions of our space are to serve as an aquarium, research center, and educational facility all with the purpose to educate the community on the conservation and preservation of marine life and their ecosystems.

BUILDING PAST & PRESENT 1925

2001

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune was founded.

It was originally named the Sarasota Herald.

The original headquarters was on Oak Street in Sarasota (‘Sarasota herald building’, n.d.).

Architect Bernando Fort-Brescia along with the client, The New York Times, and a team from Arquitectonica (responsible for the building design) began the discussion for the current Sarasota Herald-Tribune Headquarters. The current headquarters is located in the heart of Downtown Sarasota (‘Sarasota HeraldTribune headquarters’, 2012).

2003

Bernardo Fort-Brescia had a vision for the building that would come to fruition in the coming years. He had six principles that he wished to implement into the design: • An inviting space • Promote collaboration • A reflection of the environment • Reflect the company’s culture • A celebration of city’s heritage • A space where the media can converge (‘Sarasota Herald-Tribune headquarters’, 2012)

2006 The building was completed under the supervision of Turner Construction of Orlando. The Sarasota Herald-Tribune moved in, the building is only slightly larger than their old headquarters.

When the building was envisioned, Bernando thought of the roof as a “fifth facade.” Not only does the over-hanging roof provide something interesting for high-rises to look at but it also serves to drain rain water down to the ground and helps with sunlight penetration (‘Sarasota Herald-Tribune headquarters’, 2012).

2010 The old headquarters was added to the National Register of Historic Places and is now the site of Sarasota Woen’s Exchange (‘Sarasota herald building’, n.d.).

The staircase is the strongest interior architectural feature in the place. It functions as a connector between second and third floors.

It can be used as a form of circulation instead of the elevator.

The open plan of the interiors allows freedom in the future design.

The picture below shows a corner space with views of the outside and a lot of daylight coming in into the space allowing us to save energy.

WHY IS THIS CONSIDERED A SUPPORT FACILITY? Mote’s main site is located on City Island in Sarasota just west of Sarasota Bay. This base site is the site that is open to the public and it includes research labs, educational classrooms, and an aquarium. The aquarium here serves as an attraction that brings local residents as well as tourists from afar into this city whose sea culture is prevalent throughout. Since the public only has access to the aquarium, there is a sense of ambiguity in what Mote is all about. Through extensive research, it becomes established that Mote’s main priority is the research that goes into the preservation and welfare of aquatic life. With this new proposal for a support site on the east side of Sarasota Bay in the center of Downtown, we aim to create a research facility that is not open to the public but exposes them to the impactful research that makes up Mote as an organization.

SITE DOCUMENTATION & SUSTAINABILITY ANALYSIS

This chapter is an investigation of the site and area surrounding the designated building. Through research and documentation of political, economical, architectural and cultural features of Sarasota, Florida, it has been discovered that there are various aspects that will help inform the future design. With the discovery of these features, it has been concluded that sustainability is an important part of the area. The chapter also discusses the sustainable features that the building already possesses and the features that will be implemented in the proposed design.

POLITICS OF SARASOTA JOE FARRELL Joe Farrell , pictured to the right was one of the first and most recognized Sarasota architects.

He started his work in 1960 and now at the age of 84, he is helping and giving advice to new architects in the construction of the new Sarasota. He claims that “THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A NARROW AUDIENCE FOR MODERNISM, BUT IN SARASOTA THERE IS A STRONG AUDIENCE” (p, 2). He also explains that the current movement of architecture in Sarasota is centered on Philip Hiss (Lewis, 2015).

Hiss was a designer at first, then a photographer, entrepreneur, and diplomat second. He was on the board of trustees of the New College in Sarasota, and chairman of the Sarasota School Board. He was hired to design a significant amount of projects in the area. The architecture of Sarasota has been a reflection of their styles ( Farrell and Hiss) and they still embrace this architecture.

As of today, most politicians or philanthropists support MODERN ARCHITECTURE versus contemporary architecture (Lewis, 2015).

The majority of the current commissioners of Sarasota come from the south of the county. They claim that throughout the years, the FUNDS HAVE NOT BEEN EQUALLY DISTRIBUTED. Most of the funds generally go to the more affluent part of the county, which is the north (where the HeraldTribune is located), but recently they are looking to even out the funds with roads, parks, public safety, utilities and libraries equally around the entire county.

The Center for Architecture in Sarasota is a BEAUTIFUL, ICONIC, MIDCENTURY BUILDING THAT HAS A MISSION TO REANIMATE THE LOCAL ARCHITECTURE SCENE. They want to approach the new architecture based on the COMMUNITY NEEDS and young students’ solutions to current problems. This center is striving to [preserve and further] the city’s great MODERN LEGACY with the INSPIRATION OF NEW AND UNBIASED MINDS from the politicians and local jurisdiction. For this, they are getting help from the University of Florida’s Architecture Program. (Lewis, 2015).

SARASOTA 2050 Sarasota County Commissioner Shannon Staub and former County Administrator Jim Ley understood that there was a necessity for a future plan. This plan includes: • Preserving and strengthening existing •

Sarasota County is one of the most affluent counties in Florida. Many retirees are looking to buy a house in Sarasota primarily because of its great location, its scenic beaches, and the unique entertainment. The median household income for 5 of the richest neighborhoods in Sarasota is $100,000; the median household income in Longboat Key, pictured above, is $123,000 (Anderson, 2011).

Sarasota also has one of the lowest household incomes with less than $19,400 in the Newtown neighborhood, pictured below.

This is why politicians are starting to realize that the south end of Sarasota County is in need of new infrastructure, schools, parks, roads, etc. Politicians are aware that the funds of the county have to be better distributed and it has become a goal for the current board members (Anderson, 2011).

Properties in North Sarasota County can average up to 5 million dollars. From 2014 to 2015, there has been a 12% increase within a 12-month span in the request for luxury home permits. The European economic crisis is expected to get better and once it does, more homes are expected to be bought in Sarasota (Anderson, 2011).

ITALIAN INFLUENCE

ARCHITECTURE OF THE AREA From the inception of the historic Ringling mansion, the CITY’S APPRECIATION FOR ITALIAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE GREW AT A SUBSTANTIAL RATE. Statues of David can be spotted throughout the city and on street signs; it has become the OFFICIAL SYMBOL OF THE CITY.

It should not go without saying that much of the ARCHITECTURE IN SARASOTA IS VENETIAN INFLUENCED. The most apparent instance of this influence is at the mansion that belonged to notable circus king, John Ringling and his wife. They were inspired during their travels throughout Europe and wanted their home to be a reflection of the waterside palaces and hotels in Venice, Italy (‘History of Ca’ d’Zan’, n.d.).

Sarasota is a city known for its STRONG HISTORICAL VALUE so it is to no surprise that the architectural heritage in this culturally-grounded city is prevalent from the neighborhoods to commercial buildings like schools and law offices. A vast amount of Sarasota’s most preeminent architecture embodies the architectural style known as THE SARASOTA SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE PIONEERED BY RALPH TWITCHELL. Not to be mistaken for an actual architecture school, the name is synonymous with Sarasota Modern. This style came into fruition following the conclusion of World War II in 1939 AS A REFLECTION OF THE OPTIMISM THE NATION was looking towards following a trying era of warfare (Howey, Sorkin, & Wilson, 1997). Specific to Sarasota Modern is the ALTERATION OF MODERN ELEMENTS SUITED TO FIT THE SUB-TROPICAL CONDITIONS OF THIS COASTAL CITY. Some key elements to this architectural style include the USE OF GLASS TO CREATE A CONNECTION OF NATURE TO THE INTERIOR SPACE, protruding ceiling elements that mask the sun, and orienting the building appropriately so that it takes advantage of winds (Muldowney, 2009).

THE PHILIP HISS STUDIO

Remaining true to Sarasota Modern is the Philip Hiss Studio. The geometry is particularly simplistic in form with a large rectangular mass sitting atop a smaller, yet similar mass which aids in giving the building a minimalist, floating appearance. As seen above, floor-toceiling windows are also included which create an honest linkage from the exterior into the interior of the building.

SARASOTA HERALD-TRIBUNE

The Sarasota Architectural Foundation was established in 2002 “to preserve or rehabilitate [Sarasota Modern’s] irreplaceable buildings and [demonstrate] its relevance to the contemporary built environment” (‘About’, n.d.). The Sarasota Herald-Tribune located in Downtown Sarasota is a more recent re-visitation of the indigenous architectural styling. Possibly, the two features that most effectively reflect Sarasota Modern are the FLOOR-TO-CEILING CURTAIN WINDOWS that create a transparent layer connecting the interior to the natural environment and the OVERHANGING ROOF that controls the level of sunlight that infiltrates the space.

SKY HOUSE

Young architect Guy Peterson is renowned in Sarasota for keeping the modern architecture of Sarasota alive. The main idea of the construction of the Sky House is to create a simplistic structure that controls sunlight and views. The “shadowboxes” seen in the towering structure above block out the sun and rainwater to create unobstructed views to the outside.

Peterson describes his use of white as bringing out the other colors in the environment; “IF YOU DO SOMETHING IN WHITE, YOU REFLECT NATURE. THE GREENS LOOK GREENER. THE BLUE SKIES LOOK BLUER” (Bubil, 2013).

The elevated structure of the building allows the wind to aerate the site with breezes coming in the morning and in the afternoon. From the chart, you can see that in the winter, the winds’ direction changes and it follows the design of the roof which resembles the rough, undulating waves of the ocean.

The building’s exterior is composed primarily of glazing which provides daylighting to the users. In order to maintain occupant comfort, their space needs to implement controllable shading devices, such as the image on the right. The third floor ceiling does not allow for shading devices to reach the ceiling so the implementation of light shelves helps in controlling the daylighting; Figure 54 shows how the interior architecture of the space utilizes the light shelf. The North, East and West sides have views of vegetation that is on the site which will provide users with a sense of rejuvenation.

ENERGY By proposing the use of LED lighting, it will help with optimizing the energy performance of the building. Energy consumption should be monitored closely in order to pinpoint problematic areas. The shading devices will also help with energy savings.

The building has raised flooring on the second and third floors, as shown in Figure 57; the A/C runs through the raised flooring which allows for more flexibility when redesigning the ceiling.

CLIENT RESEARCH

CLIENT INTERVIEWS INTRODUCTION During the Fall of 2015, we will be conducting a series of interviews to employees of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium on City Island in Sarasota, Florida. The purpose of these interviews is to understand the culture along with the operation and maintenance involved with this facility. With these results, we are expecting to come up with a set of design guidelines that will help us make more educated design decisions while maintaining the identity and culture of Mote. A set of interviews will be given to certain employees of Mote; the individuals will be selected based on their position and involvement with the animals. Due to the depth of the interviews, they will be kept confidential.

The nature of the interviews will be personal questions about their perception about the space, their programmatic necessities, and their involvement with the well-being of the animals. The scope of questions will vary for each interviewee for the purpose of garnering the most relevant and necessary information. Guests will also be interviewed about their perception of the space, their satisfaction of their visit, and their recommendations for improving the overall experience. At the end of the interviewing process, all answers will be organized, transcribed, compared, and analyzed into a series of documents that will be used as reference for our future design development into our capstone project.

METHODS OVERVIEW

WHY? For these interviews, we want to understand the culture of the organization. We can use this information in many ways during the design process. It can help with branding, concept development, schematic design, space planning, etc.

01 - SELECTING PARTICIPANTS The selection process entailed looking at the staff of Mote and determining which ones would be most beneficial in giving information that would guide in creating an ideal space for our capstone projects.

From the chosen interviewees, we want their perceptions on the following issues: • • • • •

02 - PREPARE Before the interviews take place, deep thorough research on the organization will be conducted. The research will tell us what Mote as an organization stands for, what it means to the community, and what information it presented to the public through all channels of media. It is important because the questions asked during the interviews might lead to another question or even into a discussion about the specific topic. Therefore, it is important to be prepared to sometimes go off on a tangent and engage with the interviewees on a more personal level.

03 - INFORMING It is important to inform the interviewers on why we want to interview them, what their role is in the process, and what we will do with the information we extract from the interviews. The information they provide will help us to formulate a complete vision of the work culture of the organization.

04 - WRITING This step is when we start writing down the questions to ask. Writing them down will help us reassure that we have covered all the topics we wish to know about. The questions package should also have a formal introduction, a set of questions to know the demographic, the base set of questions and a conclusion where you thank them for their time.

05 - TYPE OF QUESTIONS There are two types of questions that we will be using during the interviews: closed- and open-ended questions. Closed-ended questions will be used for the demographic questions. Open-ended questions will be used for the questions that give us insight on their scope of work, their opinion on the organization, and all other questions that let us know how they view Mote as a place to work and an icon in the community.

We were able to come up with nodes that directly reflect the mission at Mote. Those three nodes are: 1) research, 2) conservation & preservation, and 3) educating the community. These three nodes combined bring their mission of changing the way the community, and eventually the world, look at marine life and how we should take care of aquatic environments.

DEFINING MOTE The graphic above illustrates the focus of our interviews. We generated our questions so that we were able to learn more about the values of Mote, what inspires them to work everyday, how they view the welfare of animals, and how they feel about their workspace. We discovered that their biggest passion is the animals; this is why the work at Mote and what motivates them at work everyday. They strongly value educating the community on all they know with the hopes of improving the overall welfare of marine life.

One of the concluding questions that we asked during the interview process was what they believed Mote’s priorities are. The four priorities that they had to choose from were: Animals, Research, Education and Community and to rank them in order from most important to least. From the graphic above (root words) generated in NVivo, we see how the priorities were used during the interview process. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this assignment is to analytically observe behaviors in the client’s existing facility. This is done in order understand the functional relationship between user activities and behaviors in relation to the physical environment. The aim is to determine the values, traditions and beliefs of the culture.

There are three essential components to determining the client culture and the user behavior within the setting. These determinations are made by performing physical analyses through environmental theories, behavior mapping, and trace mapping. This helps to better determine the relationship between the setting and the users.

These observation techniques are most appropriate because they give us direct, quantifiable information which helps with understanding ongoing processes occurring in a setting. In this case, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is the setting under study.

To perform the observation technique the following tools are used: field notes, maps of the spaces, photographs, applicable environmental psychology behavioral theories, and videos.

The physical analysis is where the setting is analyzed for how it manifests three environment and behavior theories applicable within the space.

The behavior mapping is where the behaviors of the user in the setting are analyzed during different times of the day as well as on different days of the week. The behavior mapping allows understanding of how users relate and respond toward the setting.

The trace observation documents what, where, when, who, and how users leave traces in various setting.

PHYSICAL ANALYSIS OVERVIEW

The goal of this method is to use previously selected theories and see how they are applied to our case study in order to analyze the setting. The following theories were selected: - Collative Proprieties By Berlyne, - Legibility - Environmental Stress and Environmental Load - Personal Space and Environmental Design.

These theories give a better understanding of the relationship between the user and the setting which is an important consideration for the design. The analysis of these theories will help to improve the overall user experience of the space.

Collative properties are the characteristic of the setting that causes the perceiver to pay attention, investigate further, and compare elements in the space. The theory is composed by the following key elements: novelty (how new something is to the perceiver), incongruity (the perception that something is out of place), complexity (large variety of elements in the display, surprisingness (unexpected elements in the space), fittingness (how well a certain element suits a certain setting), and wayfinding (the thinking process that helps the users to navigate through the environment, estimate distances, recognize routes and read maps).

Legibility is the qualities of the setting that help us oriented the user in the space and help the user to understand it better and feel more comfortable. This theory is composed by: paths (routes along which people travel), edges (lines, not primarily designed for travel), districts (moderatesized areas that users identify as having a particular character), nodes (Well-known points in the setting that people travel to and from, often as junctions of important paths), landmarks (easily viewed elements, either on a grand scale or a smaller scale), and social legibility (the meaning of environmental elements varies in different cultures, which results in the same place having different legibility for different users).

Environmental stress and Environmental load are the qualities of the environment in respond to the users while in the setting. Environmental stress is when the demands of the environment exceed our capacity to cope with or adapt to them; while environmental load is the amount or rate of information in an environment at any given time.

Environmental design is the theory that concerns about how the setting is responding or offering to the users while in the setting. Sociopetal setting is the quality of the space to promote social interaction; while sociofugal setting is the quality of the space to discourage social interaction.

WAYFINDING The five major areas within the setting all lacked adequate wayfinding cues or signage. This results in some exhibits being under-visited or not fully understood by the public. For example, “Molly the Mollusk” is lacking audience due to poor signage placement along with underwhelming graphics.

In the image to the bottom right, the blue graphics of the sign blends in with all the blue of the background.

Also the sidewalk signage that connects the main building to the support building across the street appears to be underdeveloped. In the image to the top right, the graphics do not clearly indicate wayfinding but rather look more like playful cartoon imagery as entertainment for children.

The space has high amounts of information, with multiple signs and tanks that vary in size, shape, 5 color, etc.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS There is a lot of written information in the walls that is intended to inform guests on the exhibitions. This can become overwhelming and stressful along with the visual cues and the exhibits. The exhibit “Oh Baby!” has less environmental load compared to other exhibits; the written information is better organized, thereare places for the eyes to rest and it looks less busy. The acoustical tile ceiling above “Oh Baby” is more organized than the exposed ceiling in the main exhibition space.

Here, it is dark and minimally lit and makes the space feel less spacious whereas the ceiling is well-lit and more comfortable in “Oh Baby.”

PATHS The inside exhibition area provides a clear path to follow, when entering the outside area the path disappears and people wander around without having clear where to go. Wayfinding is also an issue, as stated before, and when users face wayfinding problems, the path vanishes and circulation becomes a problem.

Mote has 4 districts, 2 in the main building and 2 in the support building. The districts are: • The main interior aquarium (main) • The Shark Tracker area (main) • The Turtle Junction area (support) • Oh Baby! (support)

LANDMARKS Certain exhibits became landmarks because of the nature of them. For instance “Molly the Mollusk� is located in its own space creating a landmark. Also the Manatee tank would be considered a landmark.

NODES Most of the nodes where discovered when environmental behavior was analyzed. Nodes became the areas where circulations paths converged. In these areas, the flooring showed the most evidence of wear and tear.

CONCLUSION Despite the poor wayfinding that was prevalent throughout the space, the various forms of interaction between the users and the technology and the animals compensate for the overall experience that makes Mote a memorable place to visit time and time again.

The goal of this observation is to analyze the space itself and discover its characteristics by observationing by products of use and public messages. In this case, the observation helps to understand the behavior of the user in the space as it relates to respecting the environment. Traces are what the users leave behind in the setting and also the way they behave toward it. Photos and notes are important and support any future discoveries.

TRACE ANALYSIS MAIN BUILDING

In the main aquarium, there is an open plenum.

The plenum has alot of dirt and dust accumulated on it making it unapplealing to the eyes.

In the main exhibition space, some of the tiles are worn out, pictured above. They are cracked and they show significant damage.

We can determine the most successful tanks based on the wear of the tiles around them.

There is a pipe inside one of the tanks to the right that is broken and laying down in the floor surface. of the tank.

Taking care of the tanks will provide a great experience for the users and also a great stay for the animal during the rehabilitation period.

Some signs also need to be replaced and fixed. Signage is very important for wayfinding, Mote has a current problem with it. Keeping the signs updated and legible will help with the circulation issue.. For instance, the image above is the “Molly the Mollusk” exhibit and there is little trace due to the fact that no one knows that its there. The image below shows the wearing of signage and the image to the left shows missing signage. Also the “NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY” sign by the cuttlefish could be integrated better.

Some of the screens, pictured to the right, were missing and dirty. Also, the overhead screen causes water to leak on top of the main circulation path.

Signage in the middle of the circulation path is not an efficient way to convey the message; they only interrupt the circulation and make the circulation path less clear.

The outside furniture show signs of decay due to the weather and traffic.

Limited seating is provided in the most successful tanks. this shows that people do enjoy the view and prefer to linger a little longer if accommodation is provided.

Oh Baby!! Exhibit has a carpet that has a wet odor; this might be a sign of a broken pipe.

Making sure that we prevent odors from happening has to be a priority, so that the user experience is unforgettable.

The concrete in the support building is cracked in various places. Taking care of details like this one will allow us to keep the facilities up and running.

The barricades and signage that divide public from personnel areas are old and worn and they need to be replaced. Again, this signage can be integrated in the design of the space in a way that is visuallly pleasing for the patrans.

CONCLUSION When entering Mote, one can see that there is heavy traffic of people but there is really no traces left behind. The community of Sarasota looks at Mote as a jewel in their city and they take pride in having Mote in their backyard. There were no observations of garbage left behind in the facilities.

BEHAVIOR MAPPING OVERVIEW

The goal of this method is to be able to track, observe and understand the behavior of the user while they are in the settings. An analysis of the observations gives indication of what is working and what is not working for the user. It can be used to understand what elements in the setting keep the mind active during the experience. To perform this observation, a map of the space is required with the appropriate symbol legend for each of the activities that the group thinks are important for understanding the project. The behavioral observations are performed at different times during the day, on different days of the week in order to catch and understand the behavior at different times.

Once you enter the space, people are mostly observing the animals,; they usually spend an average of 2 to 4 minutes in each tank. Some of the tanks are more successful than others and they keep the attention of people a little longer.

They want to learn about each species and they want to pass that knowledge to the young generation by reading to them. It was concluded that the outside area has more space and the circulation is more spread out. Looking at the map to the left, people do not bump into each other so much. The indicated path of travel that exists on the inside exhibit disappears when going outside.

It was observed that people have long and engaging conversations with the volunteers generally asking more about the species on display. The volunteers are very helpful and they reach out to people to start a conversation. They are conveniently placed in the busiest districts especially where the most popular animals are. If there is a volunteer in an area, it is because that is a successful exhibit and where people strike up the most conversation.

There are very few spaces for interaction. The main spots for interaction are mostly targeted towards kids like enjoying the video game stations, the hurricane simulator, and the touch tanks.

Most of the exhibits do not engage the crowd to have a more sensorial experience other than visual stimulation; only three tanks allow you to do a twofinger touch to the animals and they draw the largest crowd.

The number of volunteers doubled in order to accommodate the influx of visitors during the weekends. It also can be observed that there was a puddling of people where the volunteers were standing, . Because of the amount of visitors the more interacting areas were more visited. Available seating was more crowded compared to the weekdays where no visitors used it, as well as, water fountains, and bathrooms.

CONCLUSION The areas where the volunteers were present were the most successful. People want direct interaction with other people to better understand the animals and their behaviors. Guests prefer the more unconventional means of learning instead depending on reading signage to inform themselves about the animals.

CLIENT SURVEYS

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this assignment is to measure the client attitudes. Surveys we administered to Mote’s employees in order to understand the level of job satisfaction in their workplace setting, type of activities they perform on a daily basis, and most of all if they felt motivated to achieve Mote’s overall mission of conserving the marine environment and educating the community.

The surveys developed had a combination of methods in order to receive accurate responses. In order to receive some background on the respondents we had basic demographic questions such as how long have they been working for Mote, Age, Gender and department they were affiliated with.

There were 11 Likert Scale questions that measured the intensity of the particular respondents attitude.

There were also four semantic differential questions which also measures attitudes. Lastly the survey had ranking questions that measure the preferable choice from the list of answers.

The surveys were created using Acrobat Pro and were administered via email. The employees filled them out and sent them back via email. In order to make them anonymous we printed the surveys and mixed them up so that we wouldn’t know who filed it out. By using multiple excel templates we scored the surveys and created graphs based on the information.

CONCLUSION We have concluded that 70% of the respondents are females who are mostly in the ages of 26 to 35. 30% of the respondents are males who are mostly in the ages of 35 to 55. Some respondents have more years working for Mote that others, but this aspect of seniority is balanced out by the new employees, we can say that Mote welcomes young employees and appreciate their new and updated ideas. Mote also has a lot of different departments, the responses received belong to employees from all different departments.

The Likert Scale questions measure attitudes. By using a “bipolar” method we were able to gauge whether the respondents had a positive or negative attitude/response to the question at hand. We concluded that Motes employees are happy working at Mote, they have a sense of accomplishment after a day of work and they feel that Mote provides them with all the tools necessary for performing a good job. About 50% of the respondents do not feel that they are involved enough with the animals, this is due mostly because they have administrative jobs and do not interact as much as they field employees. We also concluded that the administrative employees do not feel like the mission of Mote is directly related to their jobs, and this might be perceived as a lack of identity and full immersion in Mote’s DNA.

CONCLUSION The respondents think that Mote is a casual work environment that provides some collaboration among the employees. Mote falls more towards the liberal side yet is balanced in its organization. Mote’s employees feel attentive, productive, and happy. And they feel mildly creative, powerful, or valuable. They feel that their work is unpredictable, motivating, but is not that exciting.

They have a vision of Mote’s work as being high quality, important, and balances well the community and the organization priorities.

CONCLUSION According to survey analysis we concluded that the typical work environment that Mote employees prefer is a cubical space. Because they usually work alone and on a computer all day they feel that the cubicle environment gives them a sense of privacy. Depending on the department they work in dictates the activities performed most on a daily basis.

CONCLUSION It was interesting to see that the oranization as a whole has a different priorty ranking then the personal priorities of the employees. As concluded from interviews and observations we knew that Mote prioritized Research and then all the other core competencies went down the line, but when asked on a personal basis employees believed that animal welfare was more important.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN

This chapter exhibits the implementation of all the research conducted and reviewed in the previous chapters. From the initial phase of concept development to the final phases of 3D development, the chapter covers the entire process to create an efficient support facility that meets the needs and goals of Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium.

. . . EMERGING INTO NEW KNOWLEDGE At Mote Marine Laboratory, they center themselves and the entire organization around conducting groundbreaking research to then transmitting it to the public. The overall goal of this project is to create a facility that is transparent in their research and nurtures a symbiotic relationship between human and marine life in order to maintain the mission, integrity, and culture of Mote. Creating spaces that afford users to submerge themselves in the research and then emerge with new knowledge will create a memorable experience that will stimulate them to make a change in the world of marine life.
