FINE JEWELLERY COLLECTION
THE BRIEFING BENCHMARK
This collection was developped during my Bachelor's degree in jewellery design at Académie des Métiers d'Arts. The goal for this project was to create an iconic and affordable entry level collection that is both commercially attractive and easy to mass produce. The final target price was between 1000 € and 8000 € and we were only allowed to use white, yellow, and pink gold metals, black or white diamonds and mother of pearl.

From left to right: Louis Vuitton's Blossom, Dior's Rose des Vents; Van Cleef's Alhambra, Bvlgari's Serpenti, Chopard's happy hearts, Cartier's Amulette and Fred's Chance Infinie. These collections focus on creating iconic and easily recognisible symbols of the brand's identity. Some of them such use a superposition technique in which a three dimensional metal design is placed over a round cutted plaque of semi precious stone or mother pearl, variating sizes to create designs (Dior, Vuitton), while others create simple shapes in metal to be incrustated with semi precious stone or mother pearl. I have chosen to use the first technique.

THE THEME
As a mass produced and general public product, the theme should have mainstream appeal and be timeless. Since this is an idependent collection and not related to a specific brand it has to have an identity on it's own. For this collection, i have chosen a theme that is still mainstream but steps aside from the traditional cliches of femininity: Female pirates.
By the way, did you know that the greatest pirate in the entire history was a woman? Ching Shih, also known as Cheng I Sao, commanded more than 300 ships and had between 20,000 and 40,000 pirates under her command. Other notable female pirates include Anne Bonny and Mary Read who also inspire this collection. Their fearless and bold nature is reflected in the collection's name: Coeur de Pirate (Pirate's heart).

TARGET: GENZ & GEN Y
Pirates have fascinated people for over 300 years, being a recurring theme in pop culture over the years in video games (Assassins creed Black Flag 2013), tv shows (Blacksails 2014-17), movies (Pirates of Caribbean 2003-17), music and social networks (the hashtag #Birates, a.k.a bisexual pirates has over 22 million views on TikTok in 2020). In fashion, many designers make collections inspired (Alexander Mcqueen, Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier) and in jewelry as well, even if in jewelry the theme is much less explored. The romantic idea of pirates, symbolizing freedom of expression, rebellion, adventure, independence, travel, androgyny, multiculturalism and a lifestyle of carefree pleasures resonates with the lifestyle and values of millennials and Gen Z.
The theme of female pirates also fits into the larger theme of the current moment of feminism and women's empowerment as well as historical revisionism of woman’s history.

VISUAL RESEARCH
To design this collection, i started to look for references of the jewellery of the time ( Golden Age of Piracy is a period between the 1650s and the 1730s), as well as pirate flags, treasures, and gold coins and boat and navigation elements from that period. I wanted to create a collection that reflected the theme with an elegant, mature and contemporary aethethic so I've focus more on these elements in order to avoid the risk of it looking to childish or stereotypical like a Disney movie or a Halloween's costume.

FIRST SKETCHES
Here are some studies of the cetral motif as well as some ideas of jewellery.

MOTIF

The final design is inspired by historical jewelry, making refrence to the intersecting vertical and diagonal shapes of crosses, helms and pirate flags The premium version would has diamonds all around and the entry level version just has one diamond in the center in order to keep up with the budget.

BENCHMARK THE BRIEFING
This collection was developped during my Bachelor's degree in jewellery design at Académie des Métiers d'Arts. The goal for this project was to create a unique cocktail ring. The final target price was between 100 000 € up to one million using a large gemstone.

From the benchmark research four categories of cocktail rings arise: savoir-faire - rings that focus on exquiste craftsmanship, scultptural - rings that prioritise form, precious - rings that favor a large quantity of precious gemstones and out of the box - rings that favor originality and new techniques. Please note that this categories are not mutually excludent and one ring can fall into more than one category.

THE THEME
Metamorphosis: defines a phenomenon of transitional change from one state to another, wheter in the strict sense material (physical property, body, form, appearance...)or, by extension, immaterial (psyche, spirit, idea, emotion...). From Latin metamorphōsis, from ancient Greek metamórphōsis (“transformation”), derived from metamorphoûn (“transform”), metá (“after”) and morphḗ (“form”). In greek myhtology Morpheus, the god of dreams also shares the same ethymology and gives the name to this collection, inspired by transforming, colorful and mutable forms that fits Gen Zs fluid identities.

TARGET:
GENZ & GEN Y
Young consumers, such as millennials and generation Z, will be the driving force of the precious jewelry market. Not only because they are the main bridal jewelry consumers, according to the survey, more consumers aged 18 to 45 years old intend to purchase non-bridal precious jewelry during the next quarter and during the next year, either for themselves or as gifts.
With Generation Z, the purchasing power of millennials will represent 45% of the market of personal luxury goods by 2025, according to a study by Bain & Company. The high jewellery is one of the fastest growing categories in the luxury market. According to a recent report from management consulting firm McKinsey and Company, the category has increased by 5-6% each year.

VISUAL RESEARCH
I took inspiration in the collectives of butterflies and how they pile up by the thousands together against each other to form an abstract shape. I also wanted to incorporate the geometrical aspect of their wings and the vibrant metallic colors of their coccoons and wings into my designs, so I've translated this effect into different metals. Lastly, my goal was also to translate the metamorphosis passage of one state to the other into visual form.

FIRST SKETCHES
My first ideas consisted on a collective of abstract shapes of stylized articulated butterfly wings that would move to imitate the flap movement when the buyer moves their finger.
I've also aimed to simulate the shape and feeling of the thousands of butterflies moving in different directions.

3D MODELLING
To create the shape of thousands of butterflies together I've decides to do some experiments using the Zbrush software. I've started from one simplified butterfly wing and used parametric components to create the form. Than I've created constructed the other shapes around the central gemstone in a repetitive manner mirroring elements on the top and sides to imitate a butterfly shape in an very abstract interpretation.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING
I HAVE WORKED IN THIS FIELD BOTH AS A DESIGNER AND IN OPERATIONNAL AND IN-STORE

THE BRANDS I WORKED FOR INCLUDE:

FRED JOAILLER (LVMH)
During my time working as a visual merchandising assistant at Fred jeweller I've created designed window concepts and gifts with purchase for clients, handling production with our existing and new suppliers according to deadlines and budget. I've also established guidelines to dispatch the products, supervised the installation of scenography on the stores among other tasks.

BON MARCHÉ
Design for Fred during one of Bon Marchés regular themed events. The theme of this event was luck and every brand was doing a particular decoration and/ or animation.
Fred's animation was called "Try your luck" , and consisted on a window desgn with a wheel of fortune anda vendin machine containing capsules with gift coupons.
I designed the concept of both the window and vending machine and also supervised production with our supplier.

SUMMER GIFTS

As part of the Summer campaign I've designed and developped different brand gifts such as the beach towel, fan and beach cushion. It was challenging to find suppliers that meet our demands and budget and also harmonise all colours and designs when producing with different suppliers. I did all of the propositions in photoshop using pictures of their standard products as well as logo and pattern placement.
