“We want these to be more flexible, and we want these to be a way of helping business to grow. 457s are not a way of substituting overseas labour for domestic labour. They are a way of helping Australian businesses to grow so that Australian workers have more opportunities and higher wages. So, where there is the chance of more investment and substantially more employment for Australians if we are more flexible, that’s what we want to look at. “

i

The Mabo Case was a significant legal case in Australia that recognised the land rights of the Meriam people, traditional owners of the Murray Islands (which include the islands of Mer, Dauer and Waier) in the Torres Strait. The Mabo Case challenged the existing Australian legal system from two perspectives:On the assumption that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had no concept of land ownership before the arrival of British colonisers in 1788 (terra nullius). That sovereignty delivered complete ownership of all land in the new Colony to the Crown, abolishing any existing rights that may have existed previously.

GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRISIS 2008

“It’s a basic law of economics that increasing the supply of labour depresses wages; and that increasing demand for housing boosts price.” The financial crisis of 2007–2008, also known as the global financial crisis and the 2008 financial crisis, is considered by many economists to have been the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. It began in 2007 with a crisis in the subprime mortgage market in the United States, and developed into a fullblown international banking crisis with the collapse of the investment bank Lehman Brothers on September 15, 2008. Excessive risk-taking by banks such as Lehman Brothers helped to magnify the financial impact globally.

“It is too easy to import our skills than train our people. And too many work visas are being used as a lowcost substitute for employing an Australian, not to address a genuine shortage.“

What’s supposed to be an opportunity for young people to enjoy their stay while contributing to the agricultural industry in Australia on the working holiday visa is turning into a nightmare for many vulnerable travellers. As of August last year, the Federal Government has required backpackers to provide payslips when lodging their visa application to ensure their wages meet the minimum $17.70 per hour. However, there are claims some employers are reducing the amount they pay out by requiring workers to pay hundreds of dollars a week in cash to stay in run-down housing while offering few hours of work in return. This sort of housing involves illegal sheds, barns and cramped cottages shared with many in the one room.

Given the fact the international students wave contributes $32 billion in Australia $27 billion in the education industry, offering jobs and opportunities to 130,000 Australians. The defective policy leads international students vulnerable to exploitation who pay tens of thousands in upfront university fees that are three-times more expensive than what locals have to pay and are limited to 40 hours paid work a fortnight under the terms of their visas.

The humanitarian refugee visa allows a person who is persecuted in their home country to live in Australia permanently. However, the Australian government has forced refugees to first live in mandatory detentions centres in Nauru, Manus or Christmas Island while their visa is being processed if they come by boat without a visa. Defective and unsatisfactory laws mask the hurt these refugees and migrants face when they should in fact protect and celebrate them. The government’s failure to aid refugees in detention centres in addressing serious abuse, detaining them for prolonged periods in inhumane conditions and denying them appropriate medical care appears to be a deliberate policy to deter further asylum seekers from arriving in the country by boat. Refugees are victimised by precarious discourse for the benefit of only having selected superior migrants in Australia. The government is ensuring Australian needs are covered in order to boost the economy while the desperate needs of migrants searching for support is remained untouched.

The meaning of the Islamic veil, niqab or burqa has varied over time but what has never changed is the way the wearer is separated from everyone else. This separation is a barrier to the formation of relationships so necessary to integrate into the Australian way of life. I want to say that everyone has the right to their own religious beliefs but it is only Islam that threatens our way of life.”
