ENGLISH AND MATHEMATICS GCSE English and mathematics are essential requirements for both employment and Higher Education.

Regardless of your achievement in English and mathematics, you will work to extend and optimise these core skills at Macclesfield College to ensure you have the expertise all employers are looking for.

Depending on your current grades, you will be expected study English and/or mathematics alongside your main course.

If you hold a grade 4 or higher in either of these subjects, then opportunities will be provided to you to extend your numeracy and literacy skills in context.

If you don’t have a grade 4 in GCSE English or mathematics when you come to Macclesfield College, then you will be enrolled onto a course to help you

improve in these areas. This will either be a GCSE or Functional Skills qualification, depending on which course is best for you. We have excellent English and mathematics departments to guide you through GCSEs or Functional Skills.

Both courses lead to qualifications that are recognised and desired by employers and F.E. establishments alike.

Our staff are experts in teaching both subjects to 16 to 18 year-olds, enabling you to build on the knowledge and skills you already have, whilst approaching them in an innovative and engaging manner.

THE RIGHT QUALIFICATION...

Whatever you want to achieve in your career, we have a range of vocational and apprenticeship programmes to help you get there.

VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS These are for people who like a hands-on, practical approach to learning. They’ll provide you with the skills and knowledge to progress into a particular industry or occupation.

Plus, they are available across all levels, so you’re bound to find the perfect course to suit you and your needs.

How many vocational qualifications can I study?

You can choose one subject which you will study full-time.

Your vocational course will form part of your larger study programme at the College which will include work experience, tutorial support and maths and English, if necessary.

Does that mean I can only work in that industry once I leave College?

Vocational courses are designed to give you transferable skills, which allow you to progress into a wide range of industries, to higher education, or a higher apprenticeship.

Can I go to University on completion of my course?

Our Level 3 vocational courses are equivalent to 3 A Levels and carry UCAS points, which means you can apply for university courses (subject to entry requirements).

What types of qualifications are available?

There are a variety of specialist vocational qualifications available, depending on the type of course you choose.

These include BTECs, University of Arts London (UAL) qualifications, NVQs and City & Guilds qualifications.

APPRENTICESHIPS Apprenticeships allow you to develop your skills in paid employment, whilst gaining an academic qualification. Apprenticeship programmes are available across a wide variety of levels, working with a broad range of regional employers, from Level 2 and Level 3, up to higher level, here at Macclesfield College.

What types of apprenticeship are available?

Apprenticeships are available across all industry sectors, and cover a wide range of occupations, such as business, marketing and accounting, to hairdressing, construction and science.

What does an apprenticeship entail?

The apprenticeship qualification is made up of three elements: knowledge, skills and behaviours. These are underpinned by English and mathematics skills, which all apprentices are required to develop.

What can I do after an apprenticeship?

Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you can progress into permanent employment, further study or on to a higher level apprenticeship.

LEVELS AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS At Macclesfield College, we believe that everyone has the right to achieve their full potential, which is why we offer courses across a variety of levels. Course levels and entry requirements are explained below, and will help point you in the right direction. You can achieve your future career goals with us.

Entry Level ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Initial interview These courses will allow you to develop the skills and confidence to progress to a wide range of higher level courses.

PROGRESSION: Onto a Level 1 course at Macclesfield College COURSE LENGTH: 1 YEAR

Level 1 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 2 GCSEs at grades E - G or 1 to 2

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 4 GCSEs at grades D - G or 3 to 4

Level 1 courses provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge for working within a particular industry or occupation.

At Level 2, you build on the skills and knowledge you have gained at Level 1. Once completed, you can achieve a diploma level qualification.

PROGRESSION: On successful completion, you can progress to a Level 2 programme, or take on an apprenticeship.

PROGRESSION: On successful completion, you can progress to an apprenticeship, or a Level 3 qualification at College.

These enable you to develop a more in-depth knowledge. On successful completion of Year 1, you will achieve a 90 credit Diploma. After Year 2, you will gain a full Extended Diploma.

This advanced level allows you to develop an in-depth knowledge of your subject. Once completed, you will achieve a Foundation Degree, HNC, a professional qualification or a Level 4 NVQ.

PROGRESSION: You can progress to a Level 4 programme, or take on an apprenticeship.

PROGRESSION: You can progress to a higher apprenticeship, a Level 5, go to university or into employment.

CONTINUING YOUR STUDIES Your choice of course may be influenced by your plans for future study, so it’s helpful to think about what you would like to do following College.

Macclesfield College offers a wide range of Higher Education (HE) courses for you to move on to, including: Higher Nationals (HNCs and HNDs) - valued by employers as a higher level qualification.

Foundation Degree - a HE qualification awarded by universities.

Professional qualifications - part-time courses to study alongside a job.

Higher Nationals and Foundation Degrees provide an affordable route into a full degree programme at many universities. If you’re unsure of which route to follow to get into your chosen career area, then speak to our Learner Experience Team and they’ll provide you with more information.

Macclesfield College Higher Education Bursaries are awarded to students who have progressed from a Level 3 course at the College (Level 3 Extended Diploma or Access to Higher Education) on to a Higher Education course at Macclesfield College (a Higher National or Foundation Degree). Bursaries for full-time students are up to £300.

Bursaries will be awarded at the completion of the course, and are subject to terms and conditions.

GETTING TO COLLEGE Here at Macclesfield College, we have excellent transport links with surrounding areas, providing safe, efficient and affordable travel for all of our students.

SUBSIDISED* COLLEGE BUS SERVICE As part of Macclesfield College’s Transport Plan, which aims to reduce traffic volume, we provide a subsidised bus service for all full-time 16-18 year-old students.

There are a number of public bus services that students can use. The stop is approximately a 2 minute walk from college. Please note that where a contract service (subsidised) exists for your home area, this is the only service that the College will subsidise for you. No support is provided for students living within 3 miles of the College.

PARKING We have ample parking on site, which is barrier controlled. This provides a safe space for our students to park during the day.

RAIL ROUTES Macclesfield Train Station is the nearest train station to the College campus and is situated in the town centre.

Distance from the station to the College campus: 7 minute drive, 22 minute walk, 9 minute bus (every 15 minutes from Macclesfield Bus Station, which is a 3 minute walk from the train station.)

Direct train lines: Poynton, Adlington, Congleton, Stockport, Cheadle and Bramhall.

GENERAL AND AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING Macclesfield College’s Engineering department utilises specialist facilities and resources to provide the very best educational experiences for you.

WHO IS IT FOR? These exciting, industry-standard courses are perfect for those who wish to become qualified engineers and technicians in the fields of mechanics, aeronautics, refrigeration or performance.

Engineering students at Macclesfield College benefit from a mechanical science workshop, modern electronic laboratories and a dedicated computer suite and lecture rooms. What’s more, our highly qualified lecturers benefit from extensive industrial experience across a wide range of mechanical and electrical disciplines.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? General and Aeronautical Engineering learners study a wide range of both

practical and theoretical subject areas, from the necessary health and safety to the maths and physics behind engineering, electrical and electronic principles, material science, computer-aided and engineering design. In the final year, you will undertake a project that incorporates all of these elements.

For the aeronautical course, specialists units are studied, such as theory of flight, gas turbine engines and other specialist units.

Staff teaching in this area benefit from a wealth of experience in civil and military aircraft.

The Engineering department also organises STEM master classes with local employers such as AstraZeneca, Airbus Industries, BAE Systems, Jet2, the Manchester Airport Group, Proseal, Ricoh Printers and Senior Aerospace.

There are also strong links with Staffordshire University to open up pathways for further study in this dynamic area of our region’s economy.

WHEN I FINISH, WHAT’S NEXT? You could progress onto HNC/ HNDs in Aeronautical Engineering, General Engineering or Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Alternatively, you could embark upon an Apprenticeship with Macclesfield College, apply for a related course at University, or move straight into employment.

ANIMAL CARE AND MANAGEMENT If you love animals, and you want to work in this challenging yet rewarding field, then take a look at our animal care and management courses!

WHO IS IT FOR? These specialist courses are perfect for those who want to work with and care for animals. They will provide you with a broad spectrum of industry-specific knowledge and skills, such as maintaining the health of animals, feeding and watering, animal nutrition, behaviour and communication.

You will develop your knowledge in all aspects of animal care, gaining hands-on, practical experience in our dedicated, specialist animal management centre, situated on campus.

You will also complete work experience in placements such as animal health laboratories, dog grooming parlours and farms. Developing your employability skills is an essential element of all courses.

For the BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Animal Care (Land-based Studies), you will study areas such as: caring for and feeding animals moving and accommodating animals investigating the land-based sector.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study a range of animal collections, including large and small mammals, farm animals and exotic species. Units of study may include animal health, wildlife management and rehabilitation, exotic animal health and husbandry, farm and livestock husbandry, animal behaviour and genetics.

The Level 2 Animal Care course includes a compulsory unit of animal health, and other units such as: animal handling and accommodation the principles of animal behaviour.

This is a vocational qualification, so time will be spent in the animal room and outdoor pen areas, handling and observing the animals.

For the Level 3 BTEC Animal Management course, you will study a total of 18 units in areas such as: promoting animal health interpreting animal behaviour and communication the principles of inheritance and gene manipulation the principles of animal nutrition.

You will also complete a variety of both practical and research-based activities.

Alongside your main programme, you will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills in English and Maths if you have not already achieved a GCSE grade C/4 or above. If you have, then you will extend these skills through your main curriculum area.

HEALTH ACADEMY If you have dreamed of a career within nursing, then our new Health Academy is for you.

WHO IS IT FOR? Our Health Academy is the ideal place for those who are looking to pursue a career in adult nursing, paediatrics, mental health and disability nursing, occupational therapy or ODP (Operation Department Practitioning).

This prestigious and highly sought-after course is run in partnership with the region’s healthcare employers and will provide opportunities for you to go straight into an apprenticeship or degree in nursing. As a result, there are only 20 places available per year.

An integral part of this programme, is attending a rotation of placements at Macclesfield General Hospital, which will offer the opportunity to develop skills and relate theory to practice.

WHAT WILL I STUDY? Our innovative Health Academy Programme (BTEC Extended Diploma in Health Studies) is aimed at providing an industry-relevant pathway into the skills, qualities, knowledge and experience you will need to be successful in your chosen field.

This two-year course is run over five days per week, based on three days in college and two days at the hospital.

Macclesfield General Hospital is fully committed to our Health Academy, and will train you as if you were part of their own staff team, whilst also enabling you to spend quality time in different areas whilst on placement. These include physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, acute surgical and medical wards, outpatients and community.

Janine Oldfield Business Admin. Apprentice A highly focused and driven individual, Janine joined the Clinical Skills Team at the East Cheshire NHS Trust, as an Administration apprentice on a 12 month fixed-term contract.

Over the last year, Janine has learnt how to set up and support simulation events with the clinical trainers, as well as handling day-to-day admin duties. She has also recently sat her Level 2 Amspar exam. “Janine has been a real breath of fresh air since she’s joined us,” says the Trust’s Workforce Development Advisor, Elaine Bradbury. “We are delighted to offer her a permanent contract and look forward to her developing her skills further with us.”

HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS With the increased emphasis on developing a skilled and sustainable workforce, higher apprenticeships combine the best of practical, on-the-job training with higher level study - without the tuition fees.

WHAT ARE THEY? Higher apprenticeships are available at Levels 4 to 6. They combine work and study and may include a work-based, academic or combined qualification, or a professional qualification that’s relevant to any given industry.

Higher apprenticeships are equivalent to a Foundation Degree and above. On average, they can take from 1 to 3 years to complete, and involve part-time study at Macclesfield College, coordinated by our dedicated

employer-responsive arm, Maxim Business Training.

HOW DO THEY WORK? A higher apprenticeship programme can be structured in one of two ways: 1. Employers, training providers and professional bodies come together to co-design a fully integrated course specifically for apprentices, which delivers and tests both academic learning and on-the-job training.

This may be the preferred approach for many sectors, as the learning is seamless and doesn’t require a separate assessment of occupational competence.

2. Alternatively, sectors may wish to use existing programmes to deliver the academic knowledge requirements of that profession. They would then combine this with additional training, to meet the full apprenticeship training requirements, and have a separate test of full occupational competence at the end of the programme.

“Then I woke up one morning and decided instead to pursue an apprenticeship at the College, in the marketing department whilst working towards a Business Admin qualification, before moving on to Embrace in Bollington, where I did my higher level course.

“Now I’m back at the College as an Employer Engagement Officer, because I am so passionate about opening doors for young people like myself.

My job here enables me to go into local businesses and speak with experience to some really great people about taking on apprentices.”
