Redwood Coast Travel Guide

California’s Redwood Coast

Humboldt County is known the world over as the home of the Giant Sequoias. Half of the remaining old growth survivors of this ancient species reside here, including the world’s tallest tree in Redwood National Park and the towering champions along the Avenue of the Giants. Their magnificent size and age, and the quiet of the groves has inspired many artists, writers and musicians, but they need to be experienced in person. Smaller redwood forests impress, but here in Humboldt County, standing amongst the giants stirs profound emotions.

For those who make the pilgrimage, the 2,000-year-old big trees are only the beginning of a California adventure. The legendary Lost Coast, Bigfoot Country and Victorian seaports and villages offer superb settings for outdoor, art and taste discoveries. Come see why Lonely Planet, the world’s most popular travel brand, selected the Redwood Coast in 2018 as the best destination in the United States.

Redwood National and State Parks

Home of the world’s tallest trees, this World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve protects nearly half the remaining old growth redwoods, including champion-sized specimens more than 370 feet (113 meters) in height, or five stories taller than the Statue of Liberty. Notables include Big Tree, the Libby Tree, and Corkscrew Tree.

Walk, bike, camp or horseback ride along 200 miles of trails in Northern Humboldt park system, which includes Jedediah Smith Redwoods, Del Norte Coast Redwoods and Prairie Creek Redwoods state parks, about 40 minutes north of Eureka. The forests, mountains, rivers and coast support a rich mosaic of wildlife.

For memorable sightings of Roosevelt elk (North America’s largest!) visit Elk Meadow (Orick)with picnic areas and trailheads overlooking the parks. Accommodations available.

n southern Humboldt, the famed Avenue of the Giants, easily the most scenic among the redwoods, has been called the finest forest drive in the world. Lined by titan trees, the 31-mile stretch runs parallel to Highway 101. Mostly flat with gentle curves, it passes through secluded hamlets, campgrounds, picnic areas, river overlooks and trails.

Winding through natural wonders like the Founders Grove, which inspired conservationists to save the trees; and the Eel River, a federally designated Wild & Scenic waterway with idyllic swimming, fishing and paddling spots.

The Avenue passes through Humboldt Redwoods State Park, one of California’s oldest and largest parks, which includes the 10,000-acre Rockefeller Forest, the largest stand of old growth redwoods; and Bull Creek Flats, one of the densest and most awe-inspiring collections of champion trees.

Founders Grove. The giant trees here sparked the creation of Save the Redwoods League 100 years ago. The park has six such rare Albino redwood trees, including the striking Christmas Tree.

Picnic & Swim. Women’s Federation Grove has great lunch spots, kid friendly swimming holes and a Julia Morgandesigned stone fireplace.

Visitor Information Centers can be found at Prairie Creek (north of Orick) with on-site rangers, bookstore, restrooms, and picnic area. (707-488-2039)

The Lost Coast

In Southern Humboldt is the longest undeveloped shoreline in the continental United States, this nearly 110-mile pristine coast displays virtually no signs of civilization, except for the remote outpost of Shelter Cove. The reason? The imposing King Range Mountains rise 4,000 feet above the coast, ensuring that development could not detract from the breath-taking views. Here one can backpack on the coast for three days and share the company of only seals, seabirds, crabs and whales.

Lost Coast treks include a legendary hike-in surf break, hidden abalone crags and tide pools, cliff-top fields of wild poppies, one of the nation’s best single-track bike trails, and the abandoned but picturesque lighthouse, Punta Gorda in Petrolia.

Eureka - A Victorian Seaport

I

magine an era of gracious living, grand mansions, arts and fine dining. In the city of Eureka that era is now. Founded in 1850 as a shipping center for the Trinity gold mines, Eureka flourished through fishing, farming and especially logging. While the waterfront district built her reputation as a lusty, brawling timber town, her quiet neighborhoods grew more elegant as prosperous Eurekans built substantial homes from enduring redwood. Today the Victorian Seaport is an open air museum of architecture, dedicated to preserving one of the finest and largest collections of Victorian homes in the world.

Nowhere is Eureka’s heritage more evident than Old Town (below), a meticulously restored district of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums. Many special events, including the Arts Alive! art walk on the first Saturday of each month, take place in Old Town, which boasts a nationally recognized arts district. The Eureka Boardwalk,

Fisherman’s Plaza and Hikshari Trail provide waterfront views of Humboldt Bay, which teems with sea birds, seals, sea lions and fishing boats. Other popular attractions include the Samoa Cookhouse, serving lumberjack meals since 1890, and Sequoia Park & Zoo, a redwood forest with hiking trails, playgrounds and zoo with an otter water park, red pandas, monkeys, petting barn and cafe. Nearby Redwood Acres hosts fun events, shops and a native plant garden. The Madaket, the nation’s oldest passenger ferry boat, has offered bay cruises for more than a century. Below deck is the state’s smallest licensed bar. For history buffs, Old Town Carriage Co. offers horse-powered heritage tours and romantic rides. Pride Enterprises leads architectural tours in the Victorian business district. And Haunted History Ghost Tours in Old Town follows in the ethereal footsteps of many notorious Eurekans. For more ideas, stop in the Eureka Visitor Center (see map).

The most photographed Victorian Mansion in California, Eureka’s Carson Mansion was built 1884 by lumber magnate, William Carson.

Ferndale - The Original Victorian Village

Known as Cream City, Ferndale was founded in 1852 by pioneer families who farmed the Eel River bottom lands. The rich pastures were ideal for dairy cows and farmers translated their prosperity into lavish homes known as Butterfat Palaces. The Victorian downtown and neighborhoods have changed little. With historic bed and breakfast inns and an

unhurried pace, Ferndale is an ideal refuge from the hectic world. Of particular note are the Ferndale Cemetery, Russ Park, Centerville Beach and historic Fern Cottage. The Ferndale Museum has displays of area history, while the Ferndale Art & Cultural Building and Ferndale Repertory Theatre showcase the best of local artists, craftspeople and actors.

Fortuna - The Friendly Town

Sunny Fortuna is an all-American town with a lively Main Street, lots of antique shops and host to numerous special events. The Fortuna Depot Museum in Rohner Park displays local exhibits, while the River Lodge conference center overlooks the Eel River. Situated between Humboldt Bay and the southern redwood parks, Fortuna makes an excellent base from which to explore the Redwood Coast.
