Stencili tegemiseks on mitmeid viise.

Iga kunstniku tehnika on erinev, aga kehtivad ka teatud üldloogikad, mis on universaalsed. Käin samm-sammult läbi kogu protsessi, seda on võimalik rakendada enamike fotode peal nii Photoshopi kui Gimpi või muu pilditöötlusprogrammiga.

Mina kasutasin Photoshopi.

HOW TO TURN A PHOTO INTO A STENCIL?

KUIDAS MA TEGIN FOTOST STENCILI?

There are many ways to make a stencil.

Every artist uses a different technical approach but there are certain guidelines that are universal. I will lay out a step-bystep process that can be applied to most photographs with Photoshop, Gimp or some other image-editing program.

I used Photoshop.

LIHTSUSTAMINE // SIMPLIFY Vähendan värvitoonide ja detailide hulka nii palju kui võimalik.

Minimize the number of colors and details as much as possible.

1. Keeran foto mustvalgeks, lisan kontrasti.

1. Turn the photo black and white, add contrast.

2. Teen näoalad ja muud tumedadamad alad käsitsi heledamaks. Heledad alad jällegi tumedamaks.

2. Make the facial areas and other darker areas manually lighter. Now turn the lighter areas darker.

3. Kasutan Posterize filtrit, et eraldada foto neljaks tooniks: mustaks, valgeks, tumehalliks ja helehalliks.

3. Use the Posterize filter to separate the photo into four layers: black, white, dark gray and light gray.

4. Kasutan Cutout filtrit, et lihtsustada joont ja vähendada detailide hulka. Selle jaoks sobib ka Paint Daubs väga hästi.

4. Use the Cutout filter to simplify the lines and minimize details. Paint Daubs does the trick just as well.

KIHTIDEKS TEGEMINE // LAYERING Eraldan iga värvitooni eraldi kihile.

Divide each color into separate layers.

5. Esimene kiht on siluett. Tavaliselt see toon, mida pildis kõige rohkem on. Mina võtan selleks helehalli.

Selekteerin alguses tausta, siis vastupidise ala ning tõstan kujutise silueti eraldi kihile.

5. The first layer is the silhouette. It’s usually the color the image has the most of. For me, it’s mostly light gray.

First select the background, then the reverse area and lift the silhouette of the image onto a separate layer.

6. Teine kiht on tumehall. Selekteerin Color Range tööriistaga (PS. Select - Color Range - Fuzziness 80) ainult tumehallid alad pildi peal ja tõstan need eraldi kihile.

6. Second layer is dark gray. Using the Color Range tool (PS: Select - Color Range - Fuzziness 80) select only the dark gray areas and lift them onto a separate layer.

7. Värvin tumehalliks ka need alad, kuhu must kiht hiljem peale tuleb.

8. Lisan valge kihi Color Range’iga.

8. Add the white layer with Color Range.

9. Add the black layer with Color Range.

9. Lisan musta kihi Color Range’iga.

LÕIKAMISEKS ETTEVALMISTAMINE// CUTTING PREP 10. Teen kõikidele “hõljuvatele” aladele sillad, kustutan ebavajalikud väikesed detailid. On vaja, et stencil oleks ühes tükis, et seda saaks välja lõigata.

Mida rohkem ühendavaid kohti, seda tugevam stencil on ja seda rohkem kordi saab seda järjest kasutada.

10. Make bridges to all the so-called floating areas, delete all unnecessary small details. The stencil needs to be in one piece so it can be cut out. The more there are connecting bridges the stronger the stencil is and the longer it’s period of use.

11. Siluett esimesena. Teen sillad, et käe ja keha vahele jääv ala lõigates välja ei kukuks. Kustutan teisele poole jäävad väiksemad alad, sest sildade tegemine oleks keerulisem kui väikse detaili kaotus.

11. Silhouette first. Make bridges so that for instance the area between the arm and the body wouldn’t fall out as you cut. Erase smaller details on the other side because making bridges is more difficult than losing a couple of minor details.

12. Teen tumehallile kihile sillad. Kaval on sillad jätta järgnevate kihtide alla ja muidu loogilistesse kohtadesse, siis ei ole vaja neid hiljem eraldi üle värvida.

13. Mustaga täpselt sama.

12. Make bridges for the dark gray layer. It’s clever to situate the bridges so that following layers cover them up or in other logical places so you won’t need to paint over them later.

14. Ja valgega.

13. Exactly the same with black.

14. And white.

VALMIS! // AND YOU’RE DONE! Kihid võib välja trükkida ühes tükis suurele paberile mõnes trükiteenust pakkuvas firmas või rohkem DIY lähenemine on lõigata pilt A4-suurusteks tükkideks, välja trükkida tavalise koduprinteriga ning siis uuesti kokku kleepida. Mõlemal juhul on järgmine samm kleepida paber papi peale ning lõigata tavalise vaibanoa või skalpelliga välja korraga läbi paberi- ja papikihi. Paberi võib pärast ära visata, pappi hoida hoolikalt mapi vahel ja kasutada nii kaua kui võimalik :)

You can get a print shop to print the layers out for you in one piece or a more DIY approach would be to cut the image into A4 sized pieces, print it out with a regular printer and tape the pieces together. In both cases the next thing to do is tape/glue the paper over some cardboard and cut it with a usual box cutter or a scalpel through both the paper and the cardboard. You can discard the paper after, but keep the cardboard layers safely between folder covers and use as long as you can :)

Nagu ikka, jäime näituse ülespanekul plaanitud ajast kõvasti maha. Selleks ajaks, kui jõudsime näituse kõige olulisema osa – näitusesaali kujundamiseni –, oli avamiseni jäänud umbes kolm päeva.

Järgnevad päevad veetsin nendel paaril ruutmeetril, käies vahepeal vaid magamas ja söömas, ning ladusin kleepsudest kompositsioone kokku. Esimese vihma järel avastasime, et galerii katus laseb vett läbi ja kohati tekkisid kleepsudele seetõttu niiskuskahjustused. Peagi selgus, et kehvema liimiga kleepsud olid hakanud seina küljest lahti tulema.

Olime sunnitud superliimi abiga need tagasi panema. Õnneks oli mul ka paar abilist ja natukene tekkis seal autokastis olles tunne, nagu oleksin laagris ja näitusesaal on telk. Viimasel päeval kleepisime kella viieni hommikul, aga näitus sai üles. Ja ma olin rahul. Meie pisikene galerii oli kuidagi nii armas ja omanäoline. Igal kleepsul seinas oli oma koht, mis just talle valitud. Tahtsime panna kleepsud nii, et igat kleepsu oleks näha ja selle eripära tuleks välja.

Sobitasime raamides omavahel erinevate kunstnike kleepse ning need hakkasid täiega omavahel suhtlema ja üksteist täiustama. Nagu ka tänaval. Veel mõned ettevalmistused auto välises osas ning paar tundi enne näituse avamist tundus, et kõik on enam-vähem tehtud ja auto valmis. Oli selline tunne, nagu oleks maratoni jooksnud. Ja siis pani postiljon uued kleepsud postkasti.

As always, we fell severely behind with putting up the exhibition. By the time we got to the most important part – designing the exhibition space – the opening was due in three days. I spent the remaining days confined to these few square meters, leaving only to sleep and eat, putting together sticker compositions. After the first rain we discovered the gallery roof leaked and some of the stickers suffered water damage. Soon, the stickers with lowergrade glue started to peel off the wall.

We were forced to fix them with superglue. Luckily I had some help and being in that truck sort of made me feel like I was out camping with the exhibition space being the tent. On the last day we glued until five in the morning but the exhibition was ready. And I was happy with it. Our little gallery was just so cozy and one of a kind. Every sticker was in its own hand-picked spot. Our aim was to arrange the stickers so they’d be clearly visible and to showcase their individual characteristics. We fit stickers from different artists together inside some frames and they totally started to communicate and complement each other: the way it is on the streets.

Now only some last-minute improvements to the exterior of the car and with just a few hours to go, everything seemed ready for action. I felt like I had run a marathon. And then the mailman delivered more stickers to my mailbox.
