A long time ago, Mama had planted a tiny pumpkin seed. Now, it was so big it blocked her vegetable patch! She decided to move it.
Ask: Why did she want to move her pumpkin?
She pushed and pushed. It didn’t budge. Mama called the village aunties to help.
The pumpkin was just TOO BIG!
Everyone was exhausted.
Mama left the enormous pumpkin and came to sleep. The caterpillars had a feast in the silver moonlight. But the enormous pumpkin was still too enormous to move!
Ask: How many caterpillars can you count in this picture?
Just as the Sun peeked over the horizon, the enormous pumpkin started rolling down the hill.
It
stopped in a field full of sheep, where Pablo the shepherd was sitting with his friend.
“That’s a baa-rilliantly big pumpkin!” they said.
Pablo tried to take a big rock and break open the pumpkin.
“This pumpkin could feel the whole village for a grand feast!” he thought.
It split open, just a little bit.
As he peered inside, Pablo saw some small, oval white things.
Pablo ran home to tell his mother about the enormous pumpkin.
Ask: What do you think is inside?
Pablo’s mother smiled wisely: “If you wait, I promise you could feed the village all winter,” she said kindly, “Then, we will have many, many pumpkins to eat—not just one!”
And so it happened. The next summer, the enormous pumpkin burst open. It was full of many, many seeds.
Ask: Have you ever seen the seeds of a fruit or vegetable?
The seeds grew into beautiful big pumpkins. That winter, everyone in the village had lots of pumpkins to eat. They went to Mama. “Thank you!” they called.
