This is our fifth annual forum focused on exploring the best practices, scalable solutions, and promising initiatives that will help the United States step up its STEM education efforts and create a workforce with the skills it requires in an increasingly technical world. Many of you have been with us before, and I thank you for your support and participation. To those of you who are first-timers, please make yourself at home. Introducing a virtual learning and assessment system for science called Inq-ITS! Instead of taking multiple choice tests on rote science knowledge, students practice and learn real science inquiry skills with interactive, virtual labs in the Inq-ITS system. While kids “show what they know”, educators get real-time, actionable reports and on their mobile device. These reports and alerts enable them to pinpoint which students need help most, and on what skills. Students can also get real time feedback from Rex, a cartoon dinosaur, in real time as they work on inquiry tasks.

Creating IT Futures Foundation is working with Opportunity Youth and underserved adults to train them in the skills employers want, certify them for tech careers, and then connect them to more than 100 employers for jobs. Getting More Girls Into the Game Room: Holiday 2

The myth that girls don’t like – or can’t excel in – science and math is increasingly being dispelled, but a recent Gallup poll found that too often girls are still receiving that wrong-headed message and other damaging ones from parents, teachers and pop culture. A 2012 Girls Scouts study found that 74 percent of girls were interested in STEM subjects and careers but that interest dropped during two key periods: middle school and the transition between high school and college. Out-of-School Learning: Making a Difference for the Underserved Room: Holiday 2

Students spend limited time in the classroom learning science and math, so how they spend their time outside school can play a critical role in their success in STEM. Research from the Afterschool Alliance demonstrated that by almost every metric, students who were part of high-quality out-ofschool STEM programs were more interested in these subjects, more likely to major in them, and more likely to get higher grades. African-American and Latino students also participate in afterschool programs at a higher rate than the national average, so the opportunity to engage with these underserved populations outside of school hours is key. In engineering, African-Americans and Hispanics represent only 15 percent of undergraduates and 11 percent of grad students, as well as just 1 in 10 professionals in the field. To recruit and retain more students of color in the field, many engineering schools are offering real-world coursework, creating summer bridge programs, designing living-learning communities, expanding mentorship programs, hiring minority faculty members, and building cohorts and peer networks. Companies are joining the effort, too, by working with college chapters of professional engineering societies and also offering scholarships and internships for students of color, who they hope will one day diversify their own ranks. Priming the Pipeline: The Push for Diversity at Engineering Schools

Early College High School: A Tried and True Track Room: Holiday 1

Dual-enrollment schools allow students the opportunity to have one foot in high school and the other in community college, exposing them to critical skills and hands-on activities that can make science and math come alive at a crucial age. According to Jobs for the Future, 90 percent of students who attend early college schools earn their high school diploma compared to about 80 percent of their peers.

Students can save money on college, earn credit during high school, and connect with clearer career pathways in science and technology.

Many K-12 teachers and administrators are increasingly working with one another to develop cutting-edge programs that cross disciplines and enhance learning for students. An American history course could bring in lessons from chemistry and biology to discuss important discoveries in those fields, for instance, or a physics course might involve close reading of scientific paper in a way that might be more common in an English course. The Common Core State Standards, too, encourage teachers to collaborate across disciplines and to explore opportunities for co-teaching. Colleges and universities may compete for students and research funding, but many are coming together around STEM to try and determine what works to bring more students to these disciplines and keep them engaged for the long term. Many efforts are zeroing in on best practices for integrating more women and underrepresented minorities. Backed by the White House, 10 colleges and 11 nonprofits have formed the National STEM Collaborative, a consortium working to improve the advancement of women of color in STEM. The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities is examining what works in preparing effective STEM teachers as well as ways that higher ed institutions can empower minority males in STEM, while the Association of American Universities is studying strong strategies for improving undergraduate programs in science and engineering.
