Last year we all witnessed Russia invade Ukraine on Feb 24, 2022. Since the original invasion of Ukraine, over 167,585 Ukrainian refugees have come to Canada. Immigration has been a normal and encouraged action in Canada since 1967, but we have rarely seen this large an influx of a particular group. Immigrating into a new nation is a difficult process and often has a level of culture shock incorporated into the process. This raises the question of how the Ukrainian immigrants in Canada dealt with immigration, preserving their culture, and finding hope in a new country.
Daryna Kolalenko is a recent Ukrainian immigrant who has made a life for herself in Canada; she recently found a place for herself in the local Ukrainian orthodox church. Daryna Kolalenko has found keeping in touch with Ukrainian culture increasingly difficult as she tries to adapt and immerse into the infrastructure of Canada. It is no secret that Canada’s western values are not shared with many parts of the world, and new immigrants often find it difficult to adapt to the current social structure of Canada.
“I often feel out of place in Canada, an outsider to the culture; because of this I have taken a lot of efforts to preserve my own cultural practices. However, I fear that this will take me out of the culture completely,” said Daryna in a recent interview.
This recent influx of Ukrainian immigrants has made us see first-hand how the culture of Canada often excludes others. In the past when immigrants had come to Canada, that would mean that you would cut off all routes with your homeland because there were very few cost-effective ways to communicate with family back home. Historically, immigrants would have no contact back to their homeland and would have to abandon their cultural routes. Today, we have the luxury of telephones, other ways of communication, and travel, so immigrants have the option to return home and keep in touch with their culture. Canada’s immigration policies have greatly improved and become more open to people from all ethnic backgrounds. However, after interviewing Daryna, I noticed that Canada often struggles with other problems regarding immigration. Canada often expects immigrants to assimilate to their culture when others do not want to or are not in Canada by choice. Many of the Ukrainian immigrants did not have choice when coming to Canada to escape Russia’s invasion, and instead came because this was their only option. As a Canadian society, we must stop expecting others to immediately leave their own culture and assimilate into ours. Oftentimes, immigrants don’t want to let go of their culture and Canada must stop expecting this from them. Holding onto what is familiar to you is one of the things that allows you to feel secure in unfamiliar and intimidating situations, such as moving to a new country.
Canada is one of the most diverse nations with over twenty percent of the population being immigrants. Canada’s population cannot function without immigration. This begs the question of why as a society we do not allow people from different cultural backgrounds to immerse themselves in Canadian setting while still holding on to their personal beliefs and tradition. One of the beautiful things about Canada is the way we all belong to different backgrounds and yet still come together. Being a part of Canadian culture does not mean you need to remove yourself from your own culture, but rather embrace and acknowledge it altogether.
This 19th century classical novel is based on the abstract themes of beauty and youth, the language of art, and the nature of society. The plot revolves around an innocent and becoming man, Dorian Grey, who is journeying into his newly begun adult life as an individual fitting into society. As his thoughts and beliefs are challenged by the nobleman Lord Henry Watton, Dorian Grey proceeds to drown in a life of crime and corruption that haunts him for the rest of his years. Instead of showing his crime on his young and beautiful face, his evil doings are reflected onto his self-portrait that grows ugly day by day. The writing style of the book is fairly slow and includes many metaphorical meanings that can be analyzed at a deeper level.
The Inheritance Games is a four-book series that is written around the themes of the value of family, money, and loyalty. This fictional mystery is written from the point of view of the main character Avery Kylie Grambs, who unexpectedly receives all the inheritance of the multimillionaire Tobias Hawthorne. Following the will, Avery is forced to live in his mansion with his four grandsons without knowing why she was receiving the money from the stranger. While solving the real-life puzzle Tobias left for his grandchildren and Avery, they come across many near-death encounters through greedy enemies, or false news from the media. Written in a fast-paced writing style, any reader who enjoys the thrill of mystery puzzles and family drama will leave everyone turning the page over “A very risky gamble”.
The Hobbit is a prequel to the main series The Lord of The Rings. J.R. Tolkien wrote this introductory book to describe the dystopian world of Gondor, which consists of small, human-like creatures called Hobbits. Bilbo Baggins, who is a Hobbit, joins the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves on a quest to take back the dwarves’ home and their treasure from Smaug the dragon. As a dystopian novel that is written in third person, the story is formed similarly to a fairy tale, with many problems arising as the tale progresses down its path. While on the quest, the dwarves and hobbit encounter many dangers and come upon a ring that makes one invisible. Through the importance of the rings, the next books in the series “The Lord of the Rings” is based upon the destruction of the rings. The main character, Bilbo, represents the theme of bravery as he continues with his quest in an attempt to display his courage and become a hero.
This high school murder mystery is not only a popular bookstore purchase, but also famous on many online platforms such as “Book Tok”, and Instagram. Written by Karen M. Mcmanus, this novel revolves around four high school kids who become prime suspects for the murder of Simon Keheller. As each of the four highschoolers have secrets of their own, they try to determine who the killer is between the four of them without spilling any mysteries of their own. The writing style of the book is very fast paced, as it transitions from each of the characters’ point of view. The themes of suspense, mystery, and the impact of gossip or rumors are present in the book as the author translates a regular high school setting into a thrilling book plot.
The Hobbit by J.R. Tolkien:
Because of the increasing influence of Artificial Intelligence in various fields, Open AI has announced the release of their newest model, GPT-4. Developed by their team of software engineers, GPT-4 was produced to surpass the capabilities of its predecessor, ChatGPT3. GPT-4, which was released on March 14th, 2023, is a generative AI that excels in replicating human interactions, code outputs, and image comprehension. ChatGPT3 is unable to process and produce images because of its limited cognition. Conversely, GPT-4 generates intricate images through artificial neural networks. This breakthrough will have tremendous implications, as it can assist in efficiently processing data, specifically in industries where immediate and accurate decision-making is essential.
Another notable difference between GPT-4 and GPT-3 is performance on simulated bar exams. GPT-4 scored around the top 10% of test takers, while GPT-3.5 scored around the bottom 10%. This demonstrates the remarkable progress made by OpenAI in just six months of iterative alignment, drawing from lessons learned from their adversarial testing program as well as ChatGPT, a key component of their development process.
Moreover, GPT-4 has undergone extensive training and fine-tuning in mathematical reasoning. Chatgpt3 was critiqued heavily on its mathematical comprehension as it failed to simplify equations from Algebra 1. Consequently, GPT-4 was trained on a collection of mathematical statements that encompassed algebra, calculus, geometry, and probability, allowing it to refine its fundamentals and compute with increased accuracy. As a showcase of its improvement, ChatGPT-4 has achieved an impressive 40th percentile score in the AP Calculus BC examination, demonstrating its advanced mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
In benchmark evaluations, GPT-4 outperforms existing large language models, including GPT-3 in few-shot evaluations, where the models were tested with minimal training data. For instance, in multiple-choice questions spanning 57 subjects, GPT-4 achieved an accuracy of 86.4% in 5-shot evaluations, surpassing GPT-3.5’s performance of 70.0% in the same setting.
en AI has also highlighted the potential of GPT-4 in real-world applications, such as in Python coding tasks, where it achieved an accuracy of 67.0% in 0-shot evaluations. Software engineer David Rahmuni states that “GPT-4 will work as a partner coder in the near future, working to correct the primary coder’s bugs and clean up the code.”
If Artificial Intelligence could employ a Socrates-based education format, or behave as a tutor, students unable to afford formal, after-school tuition may reap the benefits of oneon-one education. Programmers at Open AI recognize the potential of GPT-4 as a substitute for an educator and are allowing users to prescribe the AI’s response style by defining it in the “system” message. Developers have sample conversations of Socratic tutor, Shakespearean Pirate, and “JSON AI Pirate” system messages.
As AI continues to evolve and integrate into our lives, it is crucial to develop ways to work alongside it and leverage its capabilities rather than viewing it as a threat. Experimenting with Artificial Intelligence can allow users to identify how it can serve as a personal assistant by customizing its output through the system message. So, if you want to avoid being overtaken by Artificial Intelligence, it might be in your interest to familiarize yourself with GPT-4... in-case it begins eliminating those who cannot harness its abilities.
