Just a Word From the Pastor 09.04.22
The truth is that our Labor Day was established independently, around the same time as the May 1 st celebration to commemorate a successful march of various labor organizations in New York 1882. But whether on May 1 or on the first Monday in September, the idea that we would have a holiday that would commemorate, not a king or a president, not a saint or a victory in battle, but the common laborer was, and still should be, revolutionary.
The fact that it is a day where the worker does not have to work, reflects the original meaning of a “holiday” –a HOLY day – A sabbath, or in other words, a day of rest. A day to give thanks to God, in this case for the gift of labor, and everything that comes from it. Most of us Americans, no matter what our religious persuasion, have lost this connection – especially the giving thanks part. But this Monday take a moment – To rest. To give thanks. We have come through the past couple of years challenged but not conquered, burdened but not broken. As we move into the fall our nation and our world still face many threats and challenges. But Monday, we are given the blessing of rest. Use it. Maybe even attend daily mass, which on Labor Day will be at 9am.
The Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Chapel When people hear us refer to this chapel, they ask me where it is. Some think it is on E 83rd Street. But, no, that is the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, which was merged with St. Stephen and St. Monica in 2015 and is now closed. The chapel of St. Elizabeth of Hungary is in the parish center. The parish center, at 406 E 80th St. was originally the convent for the nuns who taught in St. Monica Catholic School, until the school closed in the early 70s. Many of our parishioners know that this is where the parish offices and our religious education programs are housed. But most are not aware of the chapel, which was originally the convent chapel. We put a public entrance on the chapel, and renovated the interior, making the space into a flexible room that can be used for sacred as well as secular events. I wanted to name the chapel after St. Elizabeth so that the merged parish might have some part of it dedicated to that saint which was once honored by the parish of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. If you walk past the parish center these days and look in the glass wall that makes up the street facing side of the chapel, you will see a large icon behind the altar. This icon is dedicated to St. Elizabeth and depicts scenes from her life’s story. In its center you will see her receiving bread and roses from Jesus, symbols which feature prominently in that story. This icon was just completed in collaboration with Father Peter Pearson, who comes each year to lead our icon painting seminars. It will be blessed, along with the rest of the parish center, by Cardinal Dolan when he comes to our parish to celebrate our parish’s celebration of St. Monica, St. Elizabeth and St. Stephen on September 25th.
The fall is coming!
Father Baker
Labor Day If you have any European friends, sooner or later you will have gotten the question: “Labor Day? In September? Why don’t you celebrate Labor Day on the first of May like everyone else?” Most of us don’t have an answer. It seems like everyone has long since celebrated the First of May as Labor Day, and we Americans changed it, because well, we did not want to celebrate it on the same day as those “socialists” who established the May first celebration in honor of the Haymarket Riots, a labor uprising in Chicago in 1886.
