SAINT MONICA CONCERT SERIES

MUSIC MINISTRY INVOLVEMENT

The month of October is ministry month. Each week you will hear someone speaking on how they felt called to serve as a lector, eucharistic minister, minister of hospitality or altar server. You will hear them speak of their involvement in one of our ministries and how it has touched and enriched their lives here at our church. Maybe you like to sing? Maybe you feel the “call to serve”? If so, why not consider one our ensembles?

Adult Choir sings weekly at the 12 noon Mass. The music repertoire ranges from Renaissance to Contemporary. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7 8:30 pm in the church. No experience is necessary - just a love to sing.

Contemporary Ensemble sings at the 5 pm Contemporary Mass. This relatively new group started to grow before the pandemic shut everything down. We are hoping to restart this ensemble again. It is geared for our young adults. We rehearse on Sunday afternoons before the 5 pm Mass at 4:15 pm.

Our concert series will return this month with a concert on October 23th at 3pm. Please check the bulletin, our website, and social media for information on upcoming concerts.

Eucharistic Procession through the Streets of Manhattan — On Oct. 11, all Catholics are invited to join in a Eucharistic Procession through the streets of Manhattan as part of the National Eucharistic Revival and celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the beginning of the Second Vatican Council. It will begin with Mass at 4:30 pm at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on W. 51 st Street and 10th Avenue. After Mass, we will process to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where there will be adoration and benediction by Cardinal Dolan, concluding at 6:30 pm. The procession is being sponsored by the annual Principled Entrepreneurship Conference of the Napa Institute. All are invited to join priests, religious and faithful to accompany Jesus through the heart of Manhattan and renew our city!

John Zupan - jzupan@STELMO79.org Director of Music

Children’s Choir sings at the 5:30 pm Family Mass on the first Saturday of each month and sings on the 2nd & 4th Sunday of the month at our new 10am Family Friendly Mass. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays from 4 5 pm in the church. They participate in the Xmas Concert and sing for Xmas Eve Mass.

If singing is not your thing, maybe you play an instrument? Anyone instrumentalist that is interested in sharing their time and talents please contact me.

Was there something in this reading that spoke to me? Challenged me? What was it? Why did it have this effect on me?

The disciples felt that if they had great faith, then they could accomplish great things. And although Jesus makes extraordinary demands, he is not expecting unshakable faith or spectacular accomplishments. Jesus truly wants us to experience God’s grace. For through God’s grace alone can we accomplish great things. Today, ponder how I can let God’s grace fill me up so I can be of service to those around me.

Gospel Luke 17: 5-10

Tuesday

We grow in faith as we act in faith. Faith means believing even when the outcome seems in doubt. At times when I am in doubt, do I let God in? Today, I’ll reflect on a time when I lost faith. Was I able to find God’s grace to help me through that difficult time?

The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." The Lord replied, "If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. "Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here immediately and take your place at table'? Would he not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished'? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'"

Using the Gospel for Prayer

It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

FIVE MINUTE JESUS

Friday

Thursday

The disciples had it right – faith is a gift of God. And we can increase our faith in very concrete ways. Obviously, time spent in prayer is paramount. Being more active in church ministry is another. We can further deepen our faith by spending time with people whom we believe to have great faith. Today think of someone that is faith-filled. How can I reach out to them? Spend time with them? How can we increase our faith together?

Monday

“Increase our faith.” Clearly, the disciples felt lacking and wanted reassurance from Jesus. They recognized that faith is a gift from God. Do we seek the same reassurances as well? What does it mean to increase our faith? What does an increase in faith mean to me?

In today’s troubled world filled with war, famine, and drought, it is easy to lose faith. It is easy to despair. But Jesus tells us that if we have the faith of a mustard seed, it is enough. Jesus assures us that even though we, too, are tiny, great things can happen. Today how can I get out of my own way and let God work through me?

Saturday

Still, it was time to invite the person who assigned me here, to come and see what we have done. Our Archbishop, Timothy Cardinal Dolan will come next Sunday to be the celebrant at our annual Patronal Feast Day Mass. For those who might not be aware, St. Monica’s had the custom of celebrating the feast of St. Monica, normally August 28 th, in September, at a time when more people could attend. Since St. Stephen of Hungary is also a summer feast day, we decided to celebrate all three saints on the last Sunday in September. This celebration also functions a “welcome back” to al l our parishioners who have been away for the summer, and to focus both parish and school on the coming year. Last year we added to this feast day a reception afterwards, where people contribute food reflecting their national or ethnic heritage. In this way we celebrate the diversity which is the hallmark of our parish and school community.

If you have never been there, walk by on East 80 th between York and First Avenues. You can see into the building now. Most notably peek into the Elizabeth of Hungary Chapel. We named the renovated convent chapel after St. Elizabeth of Hungary, so that that parish and its people would not be forgotten.

Over the past 7+ years Mike Ward and I worked with parishioners and parish councils, principals, and school parents to bring that plan to fruition. We have had to deal with changes in school administration, turmoil in politics, scandals in the Church, and a pandemic which threatened the very existence of parish and school.

Father Baker

From the Pastor 09.18.22

Back in 2015 I was appointed as pastor of the newly-formed parish of St. Monica – St. Elizabeth of Hungary –St. Stephen of Hungary. I was not supposed to be. I was told that I would become the pastor of another merging parish in Manhattan. This parish had a large Spanish population not unlike St. Teresa, my parish at the time. It had a school, something I said I would very much like to have. It was in a very diverse, in some ways post-Christian neighborhood, Chelsea, an environment like the Lower East Side and East Village neighborhoods in which I throve for 12 years.

The cardinal is coming specifically to bless a basic part of our plan: the parish center. Originally the convent for the sisters who taught in St. Monica School, it was neglected after the school closed in the early 70s. One of the first things I realized upon arrival was that for the parish to grow, we needed a place which could house offices and offer meeting spaces for education, planning and prayer. Aside from a few cosmetic touches, the parish center is finally renovated.

Just a Word

The Cardinal’s Visit

But the Cardinal made his decision, and Yorkville it was. When I arrived, I brought with me Michael Ward as parish manager. Together we put together a plan to unify, renovate and revitalize a Catholic community that had been traumatized by the Making All Things New program of parish mergers and closures.

We are now coming out of the pandemic. Our nation is lumbering to life, even as war and inflation threaten to sap the recovery of its strength. Yet surprisingly, that plan Mike and I drew up so many years ago, is largely complete. There are still a few items on the list of things that remain undone. Most notably is the parish hall, located underneath Saint Monica Church. But even that work would have begun this fall, had we not discovered damage to the façade of the church which needed immediate repair. That repair will begin in the coming months.

See you next Sunday at 12pm for the Feast Day Mass.
