We have written about recycling, beach and water pollution, so we thought we might do a brief series and talk about global warming. We all have seen the recent events hitting closer and closer to home. Pope Francis has given us a clear message as he is calling for urgent actions. How many times have we heard him say that global warming is mostly due to human activity. It is such an important subject, so much has been written, pg. 5

Welcome Back Family Picnic – September 12, 2021

FIVE MINUTE JESUS Using the Gospel for Prayer – The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 10, 2021 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

Gospel Mark 10:17-30 As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother." He replied and said to him, "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?"

Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings it is impossible, but not for God. All things are possible for God." Peter began to say to him, "We have given up everything and followed you." Jesus said, "Amen, I say to you, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive a hundred times more now in this present age: houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come."

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to me? Challenged me? What was it? Why did it have this effect on me?

Tuesday Today we hear the story of the rich man who could not let go of his wealth. What Jesus asks of him; he asks all of us. How generous am I with what I have?

Wednesday Wealth can certainly make life easier. How am I easing the lives of others with what I have, instead of myself?

Thursday Jesus calls us again this week to reach out to the most powerless in our world. In my community who is that?

How can I reach out to them?

Friday Jesus stresses that relationships are more important than possessions. How can I shift away from possessions, entertainment, and comfort, and focus on others?

Saturday Jesus paints a challenging ideal: Give up everything and follow him. Do I take him at his word? How can I get closer to that ideal?

From the Pastor 10.03.21 Ministry Month Begins I don’t know about you, but I am already tired of news media pronouncements that “New York is OVER!” or “New York is BACK!” due to the effects of the pandemic. It is too early to write the City’s obituary, and way too early to pretend everything is back to normal.

One thing we can say however is that New York is CHANGED. our population has shifted. After months of dark windows and empty apartments there are new people living in our buildings and walking on our streets. The student population in our schools has convulsed, as many families make their second home their first home and move to the suburbs, even as new students arrive, due to families moving in, and old schools closing.

Restaurants and bars now spill out onto sidewalks and streets and almost hide the empty storefronts of closed businesses. For those of us who have lived here for a while, the change can be confusing, even unsettling.

We even see it in Church. A sizeable percent of our parishioners relocated during COVID, especially young people. A measure of that relocation is the number of laypeople active in various ministries in the parish.

Before COVID we had approximately over 150 people, men and women, boys and girls, serving as lectors, eucharistic ministers, altar servers, ushers/hospitality ministers and choir members. A check of the parish ministry software today notes that right now we are at 92 ministers.

Now, I am not complaining! Moreover, many of those people served all through the pandemic, and we should be thankful for their service. However, when we share our gifts and get involved just like in the Parable of the Talents in the Gospel of Matthew (MT 25:14-30) our talents are not just used, they are multiplied. Over the years I have watched as young people begin to read at mass or serve at the altar and through that, learn how to speak and comport themselves in public. I have watched as older people learn that serving at the altar is not just for kids, but is a ministry for all the baptized, and delight in doing as an adult what they were afraid to do, or were not permitted to do, as kids. And I have watched time and again as people who are new to the parish find not only a way to serve, but a community in the other ministers they serve with.

Here at St. Monica – St. Elizabeth – St. Stephen we have a custom during the month of October where we reach out and encourage everyone to serve. Called Ministry Month, each week we focus on a different ministry. This weekend it is Altar Serving. October 9-10 it will be Lectoring. October 16-17 we will speak about being a Eucharistic Minister. October 23-24 we will talk about our parish choirs, and October 30-31 we will speak about Hospitality and Ushering, and add to that our newest ministry: Livestreaming.

Ministers from these various ministries will speak at the end of the mass for a couple of minutes and invite everyone to consider becoming a parish minister. Then at the back of the church there will be a sign-up form.

Just fill it out and return it to the priest or place it in the basket provided for the forms. At the end of the month, we will be in touch to set up training and preparation for your chosen ministry.

One of the things that marked our parish before the Pandemic was the large number of people, young and old, who served in our church. We took a big hit in the last 18 months. It’s too early to say that St. Monica – St. Elizabeth – St. Stephen is BACK, but we are COMING BACK. And that happens because of the service of its parishioners.
