Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 22, 2023 I t is simple. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. Consider the q uestions asked each day. What c onversion of heart, mind, and life might the Lord be asking of you in this moment of your life? Make a resolution about how your reflection on God’s Word might be lived out that day. Thank God for speaking to you through your reflection.

Matthew 22:15-21 The Pharisees went off and plotted how they might entrap Jesus in speech. They sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion, for you do not regard a person’s status. Tell us, then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not.” Knowing their malice, Jesus said, “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites? Show me the coin that pays the census tax.” Then they handed him the Roman coin. He said to them “Whose image is this and whose inscription?” They replied, Caesar’s.” At that he said to them, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.” Monday, October What word or words in this passage caught my attention? Tuesday, October 17 Today we might see the Pharisee’s question as political. How do I participate in politics? Have I ever thought of this practice as an extension of my faith? What role does faith play in my life as a citizen?

Wednesday, October 18 The image of Caesar is imprinted on the Roman coin. The image of God is imprinted within the human person, created in God’s image and likeness. Do I try to see God’s image in people, especially people I have difficulties with?

What might prevent me from seeing others as God sees them?

Thursday, October 19 Money along with all that it can bring can become an idol for some. What in my life runs the risk of becoming an idol? How do I spend my time, talent, and treasure? Does this spending align with what I claim to value?

Friday, October 20 What relationships do I have where I am in a position of power or authority? Do I exercise them in ways that are consistent with God’s vision of justice in the world?

Saturday, October 21 What can I do concretely to repay to God what belongs to God? How does giving back to God make me feel richer? How can I be a better steward of all that God has given me?
