A NOTE FROM JOHN ZUPAN, OUR DIRECTOR OF MUSIC OUR ORGAN How glorious it is to hear the full organ playing at in our church once again. Not since the fire in the 1950’s has the organ been fully operational. Even the big gold pipes from the 1900’s are playing again thanks to the Foley Baker Organ Company. Now that the organ’s winding system is fixed, pipes cleaned and repaired, the organ will resound in our beautiful church for generations to come. We now eagerly await the installation of a new oboe that has been anonymously and generously donated. Hopefully, that installation should arrive by Christmas. A heartfelt thank you to our parishioners and especially our pastor, Fr. Baker for all their support.

CHOIR NEWS Our Adult Choir started rehearsing a few weeks ago. We had a wonderful Mass with Bishop Whalen who blessed the new shrines, the confessional, and the shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe. It was amazing! Even our St. Monica orchestra was back to play for the festive Mass. I am thrilled to have the choir back at the 12pm Mass!

Our Children’s Choir began two weeks ago with 18 members. It was wonderful to have the children back and singing (with masks of course). The choir sang for the first Family Mass since the pandemic started last Saturday, October 2nd at 5:30pm. And with the new Family Friendly 10 AM Mass, we all can look forward to hearing the children sing on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of the month.

SAINT MONICA CONCERT SERIES Our concert series will return this month with a concert on October 24th at 3pm. Please check the bulletin, our website, and social media for information on upcoming concerts.

MUSIC MINISTRY INVOLVEMENT The month of October is ministry month. Each week you will hear someone speaking on how they felt called to serve as a lector, eucharistic minister, minister of hospitality or altar server. You will hear them speak of their involvement in one of our ministries and how it has touched and enriched their lives here at our church. Maybe you like to sing? Maybe you feel the “call to serve”? If so, why not consider one our ensembles?

Adult Choir – sings weekly at the 12 noon Mass. The music repertoire ranges from Renaissance to Contemporary. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 7 – 8:30 pm in the church. No experience is necessary - just a love to sing.

Children’s Choir – sings at the 5:30 pm Family Mass on the first Saturday of each month and sings on the 2nd & 4th Sunday of the month at our new 10am Family Friendly Mass. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays from 4 – 5 pm in the church. They participate in the Xmas Concert and sing for Xmas Eve Mass.

Contemporary Ensemble – sings at the 5 pm Contemporary Mass. This relatively new group started to grow before the pandemic shut everything down. We are hoping to restart this ensemble again. It is geared for our young adults. We rehearse on Sunday afternoons before the 5 pm Mass at 4:15 pm.

If singing is not your thing, maybe you play an instrument? Anyone instrumentalist that is interested in sharing their time and talents please contact me.

Sunday sessions begin at 11:11am on Zoom! We conclude at 11:55am. Zoom links are emailed to registered families each Friday. The timing of Religious Ed sessions allows your family to attend the Mass of your choice (in person or via Zoom). Participating in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish!

Our 10am Mass on Sunday is now a Family-Friendly Mass every Sunday!

We are accepting late registrations for the next few weeks. Please register online at stelmo79.org, or in person at the Parish Center (406 East 80th St.) You can now pay your fees online using a credit card.

First Penance is celebrated in December, so it is important to register your child now if they are eligible for First Communion this Spring.

The Archdiocese of New York requires a minimum of two consecutive years of either Catholic School or Parish Religious Education prior to the reception of First Communion or Confirmation.

Gather with other Catholics, and with those considering becoming Catholic, to learn more about the Scriptures and our Catholic Faith in a communal setting over a cup of coffee or tea. Bring your questions and musings! Expand your knowledge of the Bible and church teaching in a friendly, non-judgmental environment. No long-term commitment – join us when you are able.

Adult faith formation also benefits children and youth. An adult community whose faith is wellformed and lively will more effectively pass that faith on to the next generation. Moreover, the witness of adults actively continuing their own formation shows children and youth that growth in faith is lifelong and does not end upon reaching adulthood. Remembering the Deceased

Traditionally, our Church prays for all of our Faithful Departed throughout the month of November. Our parish Bereavement Ministry invites you to participate in any or all of the following parish ways to remember our loved ones.

St. Joseph Altar

Images and Names of Our Loved Ones

All are invited to place a framed photo of a deceased loved one on the St. Joseph Altar in St. Monica’s Church during the month of November. Simply bring your picture to the sacristy before or after Mass, and then you can take your picture home at the end of the month. Envelopes are also available for offerings – list your loved ones on the envelope and drop it in the collection. The envelopes will remain on our main altar throughout the month of November.

Memorial Mass

Prayers for All Victims of the Covid-19 Pandemic All Souls Day Tuesday, November 2, 6:30pm St. Monica’s Church If you have loved ones who have died from Covid-19 related causes, please submit their names on the parish website, or to the parish office, by Wednesday, October 27. We will then include these names in a Litany of Remembrance during this Mass.

Morning of Reflection

Facing the Holidays After the Loss of a Loved One Saturday, November 13, 9am – concludes with Noon Mass St. Monica’s Church If you are grieving the loss of a loved one, the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season can be especially painful. Expectations, seasonal events, and the celebration of those around us often collide with our loss and sadness. Join us for this morning of prayer, reflection, and ritual. Find comfort and hope in our faith, and in practical suggestions for navigating the holiday season.

Please RSVP to the Parish Center or on the parish website by Tuesday, November 9 so we have enough supplies and refreshments for everyone.

Five Minute Jesus

Using the Gospel for Prayer – The 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time – October 17, 2021 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Mark 10: 35-45 James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." He replied, "What do you wish me to do for you?" They answered him, "Grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left." Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking.

Can you drink the cup that I drink or be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" They said to him, "We can." Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink, you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but is for those for whom it has been prepared." When the ten heard this, they became indignant at James and John. Jesus summoned them and said to them, "You know that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones make their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it and why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday Like James and John, many people come to Jesus and a primary part of their prayers is “We want you to do for us whatever we ask of you”. How can we have a more holistic approach when we come before Jesus so that we are not simply making requests but also listening and obeying?

Wednesday CCC 1274 teaches, “The Holy Spirit marks us at baptism with the seal of the Lord for the day of redemption.”

However, there is no security in this seal, for the baptized Christian must be “faithful” to keep the seal “until the end.” With the help of the Holy Spirit, in what ways can you be faithful and keep the seal today?

Thursday Jesus asked, “Can you drink the cup that I drink…?” Through Holy Communion, you do drink from that cup. What kind of life do you think the Sacrament of Communion invites you to? In what ways can you reflect that life today?

Friday Jesus said, “For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve...”. In what ways can you serve your neighbor today?

Saturday What do you think is expected of Jesus’ followers today? and in what ways can that be reflected in all spheres of influence?

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Most of us sincerely desire to grow in wisdom and in faith. Today’s readings explore the challenges we face when we allow God to lead the way.

We first hear the author of the book of Wisdom extolling the value of wisdom in our lives. Then in Hebrews we are told that sometimes God exposes difficult truths about ourselves. These readings set up Mark’s story of the wealthy man. In his encounter with Jesus, the man faced a very harsh truth, that his possessions actually possessed him and blocked his path to God. We may have similar “moments of truth” when we have an overwhelming desire to minimize or to run away from truth that God reveals to us. In these moments, may we remember that God always seeks to bless and heal us. In these moments, may God open our hearts to receive truth with faith and courage.
