The 14th Thanksgiving Dinner at St. Monica, St. Elizabeth & St. Stephen of Hungary Parish will be held again on Thursday, November 24th, 2022 As always, volunteers, donations and diners are required. Donations should be dropped off at the Parish Center on 80th street between 1st and York Avenues. When dropping off donation for Thanksgiving dinner please mark-THANKSGIVING DONATION. Tickets are available at the Parish Center for a small donation of $5.00.

There is a limit of 200 diners in the hall and 60 tickets for takeout . Tickets are first come first serve. Volunteers can sign up by contacting Jenn at the Parish Center.

Thursday, Nov. 24th (Thanksgiving Day) is our final setup, dinner service and clean up.

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time November 13, 2022

I t is simple. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells.

2. Consider the questions suggested for each day. 3. What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord a sking of you? 4. Make a resolution about how w hat you read can be lived that day. 5. Thank God for s peaking to you through this reflection.

Lk 21:5-19 While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said, "All that you see here-- the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down." Then they asked him, "Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen?" He answered, "See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and 'The time has come.'

Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end." Then he said to them, "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky. "Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. It will lead to your giving testimony. Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives."

Monday, November 7 Was there something in this passage that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it influence you?

Tuesday, November 8 Nowadays we hear many people say things like what Jesus says in today’s Gospel: that all the beautiful things in our world will soon be destroyed. How do we feel when we hear things? What is our reaction to this kind of doomsaying?

And why would Jesus do it?

Wednesday, November 9 Jesus’ disciples naturally want to know when the destruction of the temple will take place. If something bad is going to happen we want to know when so we can prepare ourselves and thus have some sort of control? Have we ever had something we feared would happen that would destroy us? How do we react? With fear? Or with faith?

Thursday, November 10 A very popular type of movie is the “end of the world” movie, where something is about to happen that will destroy us. We like them because they give us hope – that somehow, we will prevail. Jesus’’ words sound like one of those movies. How does his world relate to our present-day experience? Where do we find something to hope in in his words.

Friday, November 11 One of the things Jesus speaks to is persecution. If I were dragged before magistrates on account of my faith, would there be enough evidence to convict me?

Saturday, November 12 At the end we see why Jesus speaks in this way. It is not to frighten us, but to encourage us; he wants us to know that despite everything that happens in our lives, he will be with us, so we will be able to persevere. We will win. Have I ever experienced this? What were sometimes in my life where I held on, suffering loss or pain, and discovered, perhaps only when it was over, that I was not alone; that Jesus had been with me all the time? How did I respond to this?

Just a Word From the Pastor’s Desk 11.06.2021 Election Day 2022 Elizabeth II was many things for us. She was a symbol of duty, an example of steadfast faith. She was a model mother, for her country, her empire and her family. One could say that with her death, the last century was truly over. However, for us as Americans, one thing she was not was our queen, all respect and admiration notwithstanding. A fight we had about 240 years ago with her predecessor George III assured that our country would be a democracy.

Democracy is a word make up of two Greek words: Demos – people and kratia – rule. In a democracy the people pick their rulers. The idea has always warred with monarchy, where the one ruler receives their power through force of arms, political manipulation or simply through heredity. Western democracy came to our shores with the first American colonists, fleeing religious persecution. The “free air” of a new land moved them to envision a land where the people ruled and could live out their beliefs according to their conscience.

It was the conflict between their liberal democratic values and the conservative power of the British monarchy that sparked the Revolutionary War. The rest is, well, history.

When I was in school, we were taught that democracy “won” in the war for independence. But that presumes the battle for it is over. It never is. Many leaders around the world see democracy as a failed experiment, unable to foster the consensus needed to get things done. Many leaders in the Church, while paying lip service to democracy, see it as but a steppingstone back to some form of monarchical government where Church and State might rule together again, not only through law but also through faith. Increasingly we see a preference in our own land for the “strong man”, a nostalgia for the trappings of monarchy and a desire for a king.

And in a sense these critics are right. A monarchy is strong because it depends on the strength and leadership of one person. All the rest of us need to do support them. A democracy is weak because it depends on the leadership of all people. It depends upon consensus, voting, process, and procedure. That takes time – many think it would be so much quicker for the leader to just tell us what to do.

And yet such thinking is astonishing for its lack of perspective. Monarchy is welcome when it aligns with our interests, but what happens when it does not? When that happens, there is no recourse for the people save the bloodshed of revolution. America became a democracy by means of revolution to replace revolution with the peaceful transfer of power, where citizens vote for their leaders, and leaders rule at their good pleasure.

Everyone in the democracy agrees that if their side loses the election, their only recourse is to regroup and win the next one.

It is understandable that many take democracy for granted. But to do so is a sure way to lose it. Democracy is never stronger than it is this Tuesday, Election Day. In our imperfect democracy, many have become convinced that their votes do not matter. Yet given our divided nation, single votes matter more than ever. If you can vote this Tuesday, please do so. Exercise your rule as part of our democracy, so our country might continue being an example to all who yearn for the freedoms we so often dismiss.
