highlight that we ALL need to do our part in the fight against climate change and global warming. Let’s look at transportation: It is so nice to see many of our buses displaying a sign “ clean energy”. Have you noticed how fortunate we are?

Living in New York City most of us don’t have cars. We don’t worry about hybrid cars compared to old fashion gasoline or even diesel cars. But have you noticed that when we are in a car with friends or family the engine is always running.? Does anyone ever turn off the engine while waiting in front of a store? Does anyone ever turn off the engine when we are stuck in traffic and nothing moves? We should politely remind the driver to turn off the car. It’s a small step in the right direction and it counts.

This weekend and next, we are collecting items for our annual food drive. This year, the Food Drive will not only support those at the New York Common Food Pantry but also the community of the Little Sisters of the Assumption.

Please bring canned foods such as canned fruit, canned vegetables, stuffing mix, bread mix, cranberry sauce, gravy, pie mix, biscuit roll mix, etc. to the basket in front of the St. Joseph Altar by Sunday, November 21st.

The timing of Religious Ed sessions allows your family to attend the Mass of your choice (in person or via Zoom). Our parish’s annual Thanksgiving FOOD DRIVE runs November 13-21 this year.

Please be as generous as your means allow. This year, the food will be divided among the Yorkville Common Pantry, and the Little Sisters of the Assumption Pantry in Harlem, as both organizations have seen a steep increase in need over the past year.

Donations of non-perishable food (NO glass containers, please!) should be brought to the St. Joseph Altar in the church.

While technology does allow us to live-stream all of our Masses at stelmo79.org, as well as on Facebook and YouTube (stelmo79), nothing replaces the live Mass and receiving Holy Communion. It’s so good to have so many folks back. If we haven’t seen you in a while, know that you are missed, and we’d love to welcome you back. If you have serious reasons for needing to avoid live gatherings, we respect that, and encourage you to continue connecting with us online. But if you’re just enjoying the convenience of “home church,” please consider re-joining us in person. Your presence enriches our worship and our community.

Five Minute Jesus

Using the Gospel for Prayer – Solemnity of Our LordJesus Christ, King of the Universe–November 21, 2021 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to John 18:33b-37 Pilate said to Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "Do you say this on your own or have others told you about me?" Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my attendants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not here." So Pilate said to him, "Then you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say I am a king.

For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it and why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday On Sunday, we will celebrate the universal kingship of Jesus Christ yet when Pilate names him a king, Jesus did not identify himself as such. Why do you think that is? What does that tell us about Jesus?

Wednesday Usually, when we think of kingship we imagine palaces, royal robes, sumptuous banquets, silver and gold, power and glory. But in this Gospel, we hear about truth, betrayal, blood, and death. What does this say about Jesus’ Kingdom?

And what does it mean for those of us who seek it?

Thursday When asked if He was a king, Jesus answered "You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Had Pilate reviewed Deuteronomy 17 to better understand the Jewish understanding of Kingship. Jesus’ sole duty was to read the law of God and obey it. In what ways can you actively reflect the Kingdom you are called to be a part of ?

Friday Jesus’ glory reigns in our hearts as He directs us, guides us and helps us to discern our calling as His disciples. Are there any areas in your heart where you would like a little more guidance today? Spend a moment in prayer making that request.

Saturday The Lord’s glory is in us and around us. Spend some time this weekend noticing the many ways in which the Lord is present around you and pray a simple prayer of thanksgiving.

December 1, 2021 - A Night to Remember All of us are proud of the music program built by our Music Director, Mr. John Zupan. A growing children’s choir, an adult choir recovering from the effects of the Pandemic, recitals and concerts throughout the year and consistently great music at mass mark St. Monica – St. Elizabeth of Hungary – St. Stephen of Hungary as a place where music is integral to our prayer and parish life.

The concert series offers both parishioners and the larger Yorkville community an opportunity to spend an hour or so on Sunday afternoons listening to professional musicians perform, and at Christmas and in the spring, the parish itself presents themed concerts for all to enjoy.

However, on Wednesday December 1st at 7pm we are offering a very special musical event. It has its origins in the desire of a woman named Sabrina Kerkapoly to have Mozart’s Requiem sung in her memory after her death. A requiem is the form of the Tridentine Mass (now referred to as the “extraordinary form” of Mass) which was celebrated for the deceased. Over centuries it became a musical form, with the parts of the Mass becoming musical compositions in themselves. Ms. Kerkapoly’s daughter, Suzanne Cseh-Walsh approached us after her mother died to fulfill her mother’s wishes, and this concert is the result.

Ms. Cseh-Walsh and Mr. John Zupan have enlisted the services of Mr. Kent Tritle, the Director of Cathedral Music and Organist at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. He is the director of Musica Sacra, the Oratorio Society of New York, the Director of Choral Activities at the Manhattan School of Music and is a member of the graduate faculty of the Julliard School. He is the organist of the New York Philharmonic and a member of the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music. He will be our conductor on this evening.

This is a ticketed concert, and the tickets cost $20.00. Check our parish website www.stelmo79.org, or call the parish office for more information. Of course, in this time of pandemic, and due to the performers’ union regulations, proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid-19 test will be required for entry and masks must be worn throughout the concert.

It is seldom that a Catholic parish gets to welcome such an accomplished musician as Kent Tritle. But due to the generosity of Ms. Cseh-Walsh we welcome him, members of the Cathedral Choir of St. John the Divine, and our own orchestra, as they perform the Requiem Mass in D Minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. . . . and while it is just a coincidence, December 1st is also World AIDS Day. Following the custom of St. Stephen of Hungary Parish, we mark that day every year with prayers at the daily Mass and will do so this year. All are invited to attend this Mass. However, I could think of few better ways to pray for all the victims, living and dead, of that OTHER terrible plague than to also attend Mozart’s Requiem.
