Five Minute Jesus
Using the Gospel for Prayer –Sixth Sunday of Easter May 14, 2023
It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.
Gospel John 14:15-21
Jesus said to his disciples: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live, and you will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him."
Monday May 8th
Was there something in this reading that spoke to me? Comforted me? Challenged me? What was it? Why did it have this effect on me?
Tuesday May 9th
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments” how do we hear this statement? As a threat, implying we don’t love him? Or as a promise that whenever we express our love for him, we naturally keep the commandments? Depending on which understanding we choose, how does that affect our relationship to Jesus and the one he calls Father?
Wednesday May 10th
Jesus says that the Father will send the “Advocate” whom he calls the spirit of Truth. IT is a Truth that requires the hearer to have the ability to see and know him. Is truth important to me? Or do I have no problem with lying, with fabricating stories to make myself look good? How important is it to me that news media tell the truth? How important is it to me that my friends and loved ones are truthful with me? What is my relationship to the truth? And what does that imply about my relationship with the Spirit of Truth?
Thursday May 11th
“I will not leave you orphans.” Have I ever felt abandoned? Abandoned by others? Maybe even abandoned by God? What happened? How was that feeling resolved? Most importantly, did we learn the truth of what Jesus says in today’s Gospel, that he will not leave us orphans? What did I learn?
Friday May 12th
Jesus says that when he leaves, he will not be gone, because “I am in my Father, and you are in me and I in you”. Somehow, we are all connected. This begs the question however: where? Where are you in me, Jesus? How do I understand this? Do I see Jesus in myself? What does this mean for me? Do I see Jesus in other people around me? If so, how does this help me recognize him in my own life?
Saturday May 13th
Perhaps Jesus answers yesterday’s question for us when he says that love is the way that Jesus reveals himself to us. Love is a word which gets used (and abused) a lot. But for Jesus, love is not so much an emotion, but a decision, not a noun but a verb. It is not something one feels but something one does. How do I express love for others? Do I see Jesus in that love? If not how can I see to it that my love for others expresses my faith in Jesus?
