FACING THE CHALLENGE BEATING THE ODDS THE JIMMY MULZET STORY

St. Monica parishioner, Jimmy Mulzet, will be having his “Book Launching” at the back of our church right after noon mass on Mother’s Day, May 8th. Copies of his book will be available for sale. Jimmy will personally sign all books bought.

BIOGRAPHY - AUTOBIOGRAPHY - MEMOIR Jimmy Mulzet nearly died before his first birthday. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at six months of age, it initially appeared that Jimmy’s journey in life would be full of challenges. Despite his diagnosis and prediction that he would never walk, Jimmy soon discovered that God sometimes provides miracles. All he had to do was be patient.

In an inspirational memoir shared to encourage others to be the best they can be despite their obstacles, Jimmy chronicles his remarkable life experiences that shine a light on the value of being embraced and loved unconditionally by both God and his family as he overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to lead a self-sufficient, accomplished life. Buoyed by his faith and prayer, Jimmy details how he achieved independence by eventually learning to walk—a life skill that allowed him to attend school, make friends, and later run in the New York City marathon, climb the stairs to the top of the Empire State Building, and meet Pope Saint John Paul II. Throughout his narrative, Jimmy inspires others with disabilities to never give up, find hope in the darkest of places, and always rely on God for strength.

JIMM Y MULZE T was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at six months of age and was never expected to walk.

Not only was he able to walk, but his path led him in many directions. Recently retired after thirty-nine years working for the City University of New York, Jimmy is a devout Catholic who intends to use his faith as his guide to achieve much more in life.

Upcoming Sessions: No sessions on May 1st (Sacraments Weekend!) We meet May 8, 15, and 22.

Participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish. Our 10am Mass on Sunday is now a Family-Friendly Mass every Sunday.

Sunday sessions run 11:11am to 11:55am on Zoom. The timing of Religious Ed sessions allows your family to attend the Mass of your choice (in person or via Zoom).

Registration for Fall 2022 will open later in May. We plan to return to in-person sessions in the Fall.

Please remember that the Archdiocese requires two years of Religious Education or Catholic School prior to the celebration of First Penance/First Communion (2nd grade or older), and prior to the celebration of Confirmation (8th grade or older). New enrollments this fall will be eligible to receive sacraments in 2024.

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – Fourth Sunday of Easter May 8, 2022

It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Jn 10:27-30 Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday Jesus refers to his followers as sheep. Sheep were common in his world. Sheep stuck together. They followed their shepherd’s voice. The image worked. What does being a sheep mean for me? Do I think of myself as a sheep? If being a sheep does not work for me, what kind of image can I think of from today’s world that symbolizes the faithfulness of sheep to their shepherd? Am I that?

Wednesday Sheep know their shepherd’s voice and follow them. Perhaps because they have learned that they are safe with the shepherd. They are cared for and fed. Jesus alludes to himself as the Shepherd. How do we feel about our relationship with him? Do I feel safe, cared for, and fed by the Good Shepherd? How? And if I do not, where do I need to begin to listen to find him?

Thursday Jesus has us in his hand. No one can take us out of his hand. But that does not mean we want to be there. That does not mean that we do not try to get away. Have there been times where I have tried to get away from Jesus, to take myself out of his hands? What happened? What did that experience teach me?

Friday Jesus says God gave us to him. This is important to those first believers who were getting used to the idea that Jesus stands in a unique relationship to God, a relationship with God which we would come understand as the relationship of the Father to the Son. That in both the Father and the Son God is fully present. Who is more important to me in my faith life? God the Father or God the Son? And why?

Saturday Jesus proclaims his unity with the Father. That means that if God is our shepherd, then so is Jesus. How does Jesus shepherd me? Do I feel guided, support and fed and cared for by him? Do I resist him, and run away? If so why? If not, why not?

From the Pastor 05.01.22 Sacrament Weekend Every year, somewhere in the spring parishes celebrate the first communion of the children and the confirmation of their high school students. At. St. Monica, - St. Elizabeth of Hungary – St. Stephen of Hungary we have done this all on one weekend, which this year is this weekend. On Saturday, the children in our parochial school and religious ed program, as well as the Catholic students at the Caedmon School (our tenants on E. 80th St.) all make their first communions. On Sunday afternoon.

Bishop Edmund Whalen is coming to celebrate confirmation with our high school students.

You might ask why we do it this way. We started celebrating them all on one weekend because, especially before Covid, our parish and school calendars were so full, that it was difficult to fit them in on different days. It was easier to plan a year in advance for one weekend and allow that to be the weekend upon which nothing else (e.g., weddings) could be scheduled. It also made scheduling for other people less complicated; If your child was receiving a sacrament, there was one weekend – no confusion about different dates. . . and frankly, it gets all the sacraments done before May with all its other celebrations such as Mother’s Day. Take a moment and remember our children, both in parish and parish school, with a prayer as they continue their formation as Christians in the Catholic Church. Congratulations to our students!

Next Door . . .

Astute observers of the empty lot next door have noticed changes. People, coming and going, making observations and measurements. Construction has officially begun . . . though we have not yet begun to see it. Still, those observers have commented that the bus stop on the northeast corner of E 79th and First Avenue is disappearing, piece by piece. It will be moved for the duration of construction to the other side of First Avenue. Other changes will undoubtedly be in the offing on our street as Extell ramps up its construction of an extension into our neighborhood of the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Many have asked about the ramifications for our building of the construction. We have been working both with the Archdiocese and with Extell to assure the protection of our building. Next week an independent company will be installing detectors to monitor the vibrations caused by earthmoving and construction. A wall will be built to protect our church during the beginning phases of excavation and foundation placement. Eventually our widows will be covered temporarily with Plexiglas to protect them as the superstructure begins to rise, though that is several months away yet.

They are saying construction will be complete in the fall of 2024. . . . And here?

The scaffolding surrounding our own church was placed there to protect pedestrians when we discovered that parts of the façade were unstable. We hope to have the work to stabilize the decorations and ornamentation of the front of the church done, along with the new roofs over the two side aisles of the church, by the end of the summer. . . . And the Parish Center?

We have been working since 2016 to turn the former convent of St. Monica’s School into a center for parish activities. We have used the building since 2016, though those of us more active in parish life who have occasion to go to the parish center on E 80th St have noticed all the work going on there. This summer we are wrapping up the last of the major projects there.

The big windows, roughed in months ago when we put in the new windows on the upper floors, and the kitchen, will be installed, hopefully in June. Air conditioning of the public spaces is complete. A new gas/oil boiler, which will heat parish, parish center and the Caedmon school is almost done. Handicapped accessibility to the first floor of the center is assured with the completion of a new front door ramp. A new roof was added.

So much work requires a celebration. That will take place this fall when our annual Patronal Feast Day. In September we celebrate all three of our patron saints together, with a reception following. Many will remember last fall’s blow out international food festival. We will have a similar celebration this year on September 25th, but with one additional element.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan is coming to bless our completed parish center and celebrate mass with us that day. Mark your calendars!
