Just a Word

MEET THE GERMANS!

The Campus Akademie comes to NYC.

What is it?

The “Campus-Akademie” is an Initiative of the Catholic Academy of the Archdiocese of Paderborn, Germany. In cooperation with the Catholic schools in the archdiocese of Paderborn, the Academy began a project for gifted students in 2006, which pursues a holistic approach to personal development in intellectual, social, religious, cultural and societal areas and supports young people in their choice of career, their life planning and their social commitment on the basis of Christian values.

Who are they?

In 2011 graduates of the academy organized themselves into an association, the “Campus-Weggemeinschaft” (Oh those German words. Weggemeinschaft means something like “companion community”) to continue the idea of the "Campus Academy" in their studies and careers.

This coming October, from October 1st through the 8th, 14 members of this “Weggemeinschaft” will be coming to New York as part of their ongoing formation.

The group will be led by Father Sebastian Springob, I.V.Dei. Father Sebastian is a member of the same religious community as our own Fr. Anthony Ciorra, who says mass here on weekends. Many will remember Fr. Sebastian’s first mass in the US as a newly ordained priest, which took place in our parish on New Year’s Day, 2022.

What can I do?

Fr. Sebastian is busy organizing the events and experiences this group of young Germans (all in their early 20s) will have. He is reaching out to us, his “American parish” for a favor:

Would there be any parishioners who would be willing to host one of these young people that first week in October? It would be a great opportunity for encounter and exchange, both for the students and their hosts. There would be a stipend of fifty dollars per day to defray and costs incurred by the host family. It would be important that they have an appropriate bed, with some measure of privacy.

The Campus Akademie and Fr. Sebastian are at this point at the level of inquiry. Would you be interested in finding out more about hosting a German member of this community to enable them to experience our city?

If so, you can contact me at: FRDCAB@stelmo79.org. I feel certain the Fr. Sebastian would also welcome any questions. He can be reached at: s.springob@web.de .
