K-8 Religious Education and Sacramental Preparation: •

Final events of the season: We meet June 5, via Zoom. Our final event of the catechetical year will be a PICNIC for all Religious Education families, June 12, 1-3pm, at the St. Stephen of Hungary School play yard on 82nd Street.

Participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish. Our 10am Mass on Sunday is now a Family-Friendly Mass every Sunday.

Sunday sessions run 11:11am to 11:55am on Zoom. The timing of Religious Ed sessions allows your family to attend the Mass of your choice (in person or via Zoom).

Registration for Fall 2022 will open soon. We plan to return to in-person sessions in the Fall.

Sacramental Preparation: •

Please remember that the Archdiocese requires two years of Religious Education or Catholic School prior to the celebration of First Penance/First Communion (2nd grade or older), and prior to the celebration of Confirmation (8th grade or older). New enrollments this fall will be eligible to receive sacraments in 2024.

So, what is Pentecost all about?

Pentecost is a feast of utmost importance in the Church. If fact, if you ranked feast days in order, Easter would have the most importance. Easter is the day that gives meaning to our faith and distinguishes it from all others. The great joy of Jesus’ Resurrection translates to the possibility that we, too, will have eternal life. As St. Paul writes, “If Christ has not been raised, then empty is our preaching; empty, too, your faith (1 Cor 15:14). In other words, our faith is worthless unless we believe that Jesus is Risen!

Again ranking, Pentecost would be the second most important Church feast day. St. John Chrysostom said in the fifth century about Pentecost: “Today we have arrived at the peak of all blessings, we have reached the capital of feasts, we have obtained the very fruit of the Lord’s promise.”

It was on Pentecost that the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus, first came to the disciples. It is the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, that helped early Christians to fearlessly preach the Good News. When the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in the form of wind and fire as they hid in the Upper Room, they were changed into courageous souls who preached the Gospel strongly, and eventually many were put to death just as Jesus was.

Pentecost is a Greek word that means “fiftieth day.” It is celebrated fifty days after Easter. Judaism also marks the fiftieth day after Passover with a feast called “Feast of First Fruits” or the “Feast of Weeks.” It was for this reason that Jews from all over the Roman Empire had gathered in Jerusalem, eventually to hear Peter’s bold testimony about Jesus. The Acts of the Apostles (2:41) reports that about three thousand persons were baptized on that day.

Pentecost is often known as the “birthday of the Church” because it was on this day that God’s final covenant with humankind was complete. Through the coming of the Holy Spirit, the first Christians could look back on the events in the life of Jesus with new insight and see how they fit in with all that had been foretold by the prophets of the Old Testament. Stamped with the Spirit’s approval, so to speak, they could preach confidently that “Jesus is Lord!” and that Jesus was equal with the Father, true God from true God. FIVE MINUTE JESUS Using the Gospel for Prayer - The Most Holy Trinity June 12, 2022 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2.

Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Jn 16:12-15.

Jesus said to his disciples, “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday Jesus spoke these words to his disciples at the Last Supper. He spoke of his leave-taking cautiously not wanting to add to their anxiety. What do you think Jesus means when he announces that he has much more to tell but realizes that they could not bear hearing it now?

How do you suppose the disciples received this message?

Wednesday How do you receive the message that Jesus has much more to say? Do I fear that what Jesus might ask of me is what I don’t want to hear? How can I let go of all resistance?

Thursday The mystery of the Trinity is difficult to put into words. Yet, we know that the Father, Son, and Spirit act in one accord. In Jn. 16, we learn that the Holy Spirit will, after Jesus’s departure from the world, “will guide you to all truth.” Reflect on that phrase. What “truth” might the Spirit reveal?

Friday Jesus wants to draw us into the life of God. He knows how hard it is for us to let go of the past and to trust what the future will bring. How can I speak to him about my fears?

Saturday The love that God the Father has for Jesus is the love Jesus has for each of us! How do I ask for this grace, of knowing and experiencing deep down, this awesome love?

From the Pastor 06.05.22 Covid, the gift that keeps on giving Only a few months ago, it seems it was everywhere: the coronavirus, the omicron variant, the 4th wave filled every newspaper every nightly news report. Now despite rising infection rates, we have moved on to other crises, both real (Ukraine, Taiwan and gun violence) and imagined (Monkeypox).

Many of us suffer from one form of “Long Covid” that we don’t hear much about – Covid fatigue. But then that is really a good thing. It shows that Covid is moving from a pandemic to an endemic illness – both medically as well as culturally. We’re moving past it – We’re over it – We’re done.

And yet. The effects of the pandemic are still everywhere. We see them in our streets, whenever we walk past still empty storefronts and closed restaurants. We see them on the trains, with lower ridership and higher crime rates. We see them in the parish in the turnover of so much of our actual congregation, and the presence of a virtual parish, from which I hear regularly – they either found us during covid and worship with us all over the world – or they are our own parishioners who are still afraid to venture out and join us in real worship. And we see them in our school, where we have lost students along with their families as they have moved away, forcing us to “tighten our belts”, reorganize our staff, and plan for smaller classes over the next couple of years, until will can reenergize our parent base – which was always our greatest source of new applicants to the school – and resume our growth.

The effects of Covid will therefore be with us long after the illness becomes just another virus we are vaccinated against each year. Still, even as we change here in parish and school, (and there will be more about those changes in the next couple of pastor’s columns: we will announce our new parish manager, a new principal at St. Stephen, and other changes in staff and staff responsibilities) our service of parish, school and community will continue.

All in all, we have come through COVID well. Let us all pray and hope that despite the crises in our world and in our Church, our parish and school will continue to heal and grow and serve.

Awards Night and 8th Grade Graduation This Wednesday, June 8th will be our second annual Awards night – a way of acknowledging the achievements of our outgoing 8th grade class at St. Stephen. On Friday evening at 6pm we will celebrate their graduation mass.

This 8th grade has had to spend almost their entire middle school years in the pandemic. They have had to sacrifice many things that kids in previous years took for granted. And not only have they survived but they have grown and matured.

Please keep our graduating 8th graders in your prayers as the complete this chapter in their lives and begin a new one. 8th graders, we are all so proud of you!
