While it probably isn’t feasible to go without throwing away any plastic for an entire month, you can take the challenge to reduce the amount you use for just one day, or one week. Go to

Please remember that the Archdiocese requires two years of Religious Education or Catholic School prior to the celebration of First Penance/First Communion (2nd grade or older), and prior to the celebration of Confirmation (8th grade or older). FIVE MINUTE JESUS Using the Gospel for Prayer –Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 26, 2022 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Luke 9: 51-62 When the days for Jesus’ being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village. As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go. “ Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” And to another he said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” And another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home.” To him Jesus said, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday This is a difficult gospel. The people of the Samaritan village reject Jesus. However, Jesus does not reject them. In fact, Jesus does not exclude anyone. What might this mean for you in your life? Is there anything or anyone holding you back from letting God into your life? Take some time to think about this.

Wednesday In today’s gospel, we hear the words, “I will follow you.” Is that where you are? Is that where you want to be? Talk with Jesus about “following” him.

Thursday Yesterday you thought about following Jesus wherever he may go, did you add: “BUT FIRST LET ME GO AND…” How have you put conditions on the unconditional?

Friday If you feel that you have lived a “BUT FIRST LIFE,” wonder what your life would be like if you were to love, give, welcome and forgive without a “BUT FIRST?” Saturday What has been the cost of discipleship for you? What has been the richness of discipleship for you?

From the Pastor 06.19.2022 Goodbye Ms. Burke Most of you know that I am not only the pastor of a church but a school. Saint Stephen of Hungary has been the parish school since 2015, when it was merged with the parish of St. Monica. While my role in the day to day running of the school is limited, I am still very much involved in the administration of the school, and of course the faith formation of the students.

Central to my role in the school is my relationship with the head of the school, i.e., the principal. A couple of years after I arrived here the principal resigned, and it fell to me to shepherd the school through the search for a new principal. It was a difficult search. The school community was still feeling the uncertainty of the Making All Things New process which closed their church and merged the school with St. Monica’s. I, of course, knew nothing about searching for a new principal! But in collaboration with the Department of Education of the Archdiocese, we began a search, interviewed candidates, and one of the candidates was Ms. Kelly Burke.

Ms. Burke hails from the south, but I came to know about her during her time as principal at Sacred Heart School in Hell’s Kitchen. I spent three years on the school board for the Archdiocese and knew the troubles that school was having. I remember the board meeting at which we were informed that they had hired her to fix things there. She turned that school around. We were fortunate that, when we began our search, she was interested in a move. We hired her four years ago, and as they say, the rest was history.

Ms. Burke has done so much for our school. She turned the academic program, which was strong to begin with, into a powerhouse. Every year our graduates get into the best high schools in New York. Of course, the lion’s share of the work in achieving this comes from our students together with their teachers. But the organization and the emphasis on data driven education excellence comes from her. She believed strongly that St. Stephen was a Catholic School and worked with me to bring parish and school together, integrating its students into parish life. The reason we have so many young people serving and reading at mass, is because of her openness and generosity. Moreover, she worked to grow the school, and shepherded it through two of the most difficult years in its history – 2020-22. Where many schools offered part time education or only taught remotely, we offered five-days a week schooling as well as remote learning. Ms. Burke has also overseen the byzantine maze of changing covid regulations to keep both students and teachers safe. Bringing us through that time intact was one of her greatest achievements here.

After four years, Ms. Burke has decided that she would like to be closer to family and friends and so at the end of this month will be leaving us. If you have noticed the stress in my face over the last month, that has been because we have been conducting another search for a new principal. That search is concluded (more on that next week), and there will be a smooth transition from one administration to another. The new principal will begin their work in July.

A principal, like a pastor has the obligation to leave their place better than when they found it. Mission accomplished Ms. Burke. Thank you for all you have done, and for all you have meant to the school and parish communities.
