FATHER SEBASTIAN SPRINGOB, IVDei Many of you know that, at least before CoVID, the rectory had a string of visitors from Germany. One of them was Sebastian Springob, who is studying to be a priest. We would have all come to know Sebastian, as he was supposed to come to New York to do his year of pastoral study as a deacon with us! Unfortunately, the Pandemic dashed those hopes. Nevertheless, on Saturday, June 12th at 10:00 am he will be ordained a priest by Auxiliary Bishop Matthias König in his home church, St. Johannes Baptist in Attendorn, Germany. On Sunday, June 13th he will also celebrate his first mass there at 11:00 am.

While Sebastian was not able to be with us this year, he hopes to come this winter and will celebrate a first mass here at St. Monica on January 1, 2022. It will be an opportunity for all of us who know him to celebrate with him, and for the rest of us to get to know him, as he will return again and again.

Sebastian is also connected to us, as his superior in the religious institute he is a member of, Voluntas Dei Institute, is none other than our weekend associate, Fr. Anthony Ciorra!

The founder of Voluntas Dei Institute composed a prayer that will accompany Sebastian and the members of his community for the next week. Soon-to-be Father Sebastian sends warm greetings to us all here in New York and asks us all to pray with him and for him as he takes these first steps in his new life as a priest.

Let us pray: Lord Jesus, Give us the grace to think of you every hour, Just for today.

So that we may live in your presence.

Lord Jesus, Empty our hearts of all sadness, hate and spite.

Just for today.

So that we may love without criticizing And serve without complaining.

Lord Jesus, help us to follow your footsteps.

You can begin this process at any time throughout the year. We gather occasionally over the summer, and weekly beginning in September.

Five Minute Jesus

Using the Gospel for Prayer – Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time-June 20, 2021 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for next Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions suggested for each day of the week. 3. Make some resolutions about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

Gospel - Mark 4:35-41

On that day, as evening drew on, Jesus said to his disciples: “Let us cross to the other side.”

Leaving the crowd, they took Jesus with them in the boat just as he was, and other boats were with him. A violent squall came up and waves were breaking over the boat, so that it was already filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion. They woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing!” He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?” They were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey.”

Tuesday, June 15th A storm is an atmospheric disturbance marked by strong winds and rain. They were frequent on the Sea of Galilee. A storm can be a metaphor for crisis moments in our lives. What storm do you have in your life at this moment that you need Jesus to calm for you?

Wednesday, June 16th Jesus was asleep when the storm came up and threatened the boat the disciples were in. They woke Jesus up and asked him whether he cared that their lives were in danger. Have you ever felt that the Lord might have been “asleep” when you needed him?

Thursday, June 17th When Jesus rebukes the storm, he says, “Quiet! Be still!” We live in a very noisy world. At times we are uncomfortable with quiet and silence. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” We need to find quiet time so that we can hear God speak to us. Do you try to find a quiet time each day to be with God in prayer? What have you heard him say to you lately?

Friday, June 18th Jesus challenges the disciples about their lack of faith. Have you ever felt that your faith was lacking?

What do you do to help your faith grow stronger?

Saturday, June 19th After Jesus calmed the storm, the disciples “were filled with great awe.” When have you been aware of God’s power and majesty? How can you show greater reverence for God in your life?

From the Pastor 06.13.21 Reopening . . . Gradually, but finally!

Over the last month our city and our nation has reopened. The news has been full of family reunions and public celebrations. Museums are opening, sports arenas are filling and most importantly masks, which have been the symbol of the pandemic, are neither required outdoors nor in an increasing number of indoor spaces.

We at St. Monica – St. Elizabeth of Hungary – St. Stephen of Hungary have chosen a gradual approach to reopening, so that, following CDC, state, and local guidelines, as well as the rules of the Archdiocese of New York, our parish can welcome those who greet reopening with joy, as well as those who remain fearful.

Basic to our reopening strategy is the trust we place in the honesty of our parishioners regarding their vaccination status. We will not take temperatures or in any way single out non-vaccinated versus vaccinated people. We will trust that non-vaccinated people, as well as vaccinated people who still wish to, will remain masked.

However, starting this weekend, June 12-13th, we will begin to designate areas of the church “Open Areas”. In these areas physical distancing will be relaxed, and masks will be optional. These areas will be clearly visible due to the lack of roping on the pews. In the areas still roped we will continue to wear masks and maintain physical distancing. If you do not wish to wear a mask, please sit only in the Open Areas. Once the entire church returns to open seating, we will still have people who will be wearing masks. Please respect those in the parish who feel the need to wear masks no matter where they sit. We plan to have the entire church open by the middle of July. After that time people who need to or want to wear masks will use the same prudence they use in grocery stores, on subways or any indoor area where masks are no longer required.

Several things will remain in place for the time being: • Hand sanitizing stations will continue to be provided.

• Holy water fonts will remain empty (though priests can bless water for personal use at home).

• Communion will continue to be under the form of bread, and we will not distribute the cup.

• Communion will continue to be in the hand and not on the tongue.

• The priest will not invite people to share the sign of peace with each other.

• The bringing forward of the gifts of bread and wine at the offering will not take place.

However, several things have been or will be reintroduced: • We will return to previous patterns of singing and responding at mass.

• Processions in and out of the church will be reintroduced.

• Worship aids will no longer be discarded after one use.

• Bulletins will be distributed by ushers/hospitality people.

• Priests will once again greet you at the end of mass.

• Multiple servers will become a regular part of mass and they will be vested in cassocks and surplices (come September).

We will of course continue to be present online for those who cannot attend. But I hope that this gradual approach will make it easier for all our parishioners to return to worship as soon as possible. See you at mass!
