We are encouraging everyone to be more aware of the amount of single-use plastic we throw away every day, and to make an effort to reduce our consumption. While it probably isn’t feasible to go without throwing away any plastic for an entire month, you can take the challenge to reduce the amount you use for just one day, or one week. Go to

Final event of the season: Our final event of the catechetical year will be a PICNIC for all Religious Education families, June 12, 1-3pm, at the St. Stephen of Hungary School play yard on 82nd Street.

Participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish. Don’t take a vacation from God this summer!

Registration for Fall 2022 is open. We plan to return to in-person sessions in the Fall.

Please remember that the Archdiocese requires two years of Religious Education or Catholic School prior to the celebration of First Penance/First Communion (2nd grade or older), and prior to the celebration of Confirmation (8th grade or older). Reflecting on Trinity Sunday This week we return to the liturgical season of Ordinary Time. This Sunday and next Sunday, however, are designated as solemnities, special days that call our attention to central mysteries of our faith. Today, on the first Sunday after Pentecost, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. This feast invites us to consider what we believe about God, who has revealed himself to us in the Trinity—one God in three persons.

The verses of today's Gospel come near the end of Jesus' long discourse at the Last Supper. In the early part of this discourse, as we saw last week on Pentecost, Jesus offers assurances to the disciples. Even though he must leave the disciples, he tells them that they will have a future because of the help he will send them in the Holy Spirit. In this section he focuses more on the shape of the future, which will include Jesus' victory over the world that they will share in. The disciples of Jesus cannot know the future. They can only know that, whatever shape the future takes, they will not have to face it alone. They have the Spirit of Truth, who will continue to provide the teaching of Jesus in the future.

Reading this passage on Trinity Sunday reinforces our understanding of the unity shared by the members of the Trinity. Although the idea of one God in three persons remains a mystery, we have the assurance that, as Jesus and the Father share all, Jesus and the Spirit share all.

Family Connection Think of the last time you witnessed an act of selfless love in your family. Parents and caregivers of all kinds are called upon to act selflessly every day. Family life calls us to share selfless love with one another.

God is the model for us of selfless love. There was no need for God to create our planet or the creatures that inhabit it; it was an act of selfless love. There was also no need for God to send his only Son to save us. That too was an act of selfless love.

As we draw closer to God and the mystery of the Trinity, we learn about God's love. God has lavished us with love in the persons of the Son and the Spirit, who in turn nurture in us the desire to do the same. When we open ourselves to be filled with an awareness of the divine life within us, we participate in the endless spiral of love that leads to eternal life. Whenever we share selfless love in the family, we are sharing in the life of the Trinity.

FIVE MINUTE JESUS Using the Gospel for Prayer –The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ June 19, 2022 It’s simple. 1. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Luke 9: 11b - 17

Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who needed to be cured.

As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve approached him and said, “Dismiss the crowd so that they can go to the surrounding villages and farms and find lodging and provisions, for we are in a deserted place here.” He said to them, “Give them some food yourselves.” They replied, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have, unless we ourselves go and buy food for all these people.” Now the men there numbered about five thousand. Then he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty.” They did so and made them all sit down. Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. They all ate and were satisfied, And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets.

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to me? Challenged me? What was it? Why did it have this effect on me?

Tuesday We are all familiar with the miracle of the five loaves and two fish. From a personal perspective, what significance does this miracle have for you? How does it show us that God is a God of compassion?

Wednesday In this gospel, we have a good example that God’s ways are not man’s ways. The Apostles are ready to dismiss the crowd failing to recognize that five thousand people do not follow Jesus just to be fed food. They have come to be spiritually nourished. Recall an experience of being fed by God’s word.

How has this experience comforted you?

Thursday Mother Teresa said about Jesus, “he uses us to be his love and compassion in the world in spite of our weaknesses and frailties.” In this miracle, Jesus takes the little that the apostles have and multiplies it a thousand-fold. No matter how little I think I have to give, once I freely place my gifts in God’s hands, they become limitless. Think, what gifts do I have that I can use in God’s service?

Friday God wants us to share what we have with those who are in need without expecting anything in return. Because we are meant to assist other people in the best way we can, think of ways that you have already improved the lives of others. How can you continue to do so?

Saturday In the Eucharist, Jesus comes as the Bread of Life. What does this mean to you?

From the Pastor 06.12.22 Eucharistic Revival The title sounds a little odd to some people. On the one hand it has the word Eucharist in it – something identifiably Catholic. On the other hand, there is that word revival, which evokes Protestant camp meetings, fiery preaching and altar calls to “get saved”. And yet, that is what the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is calling a three-year grassroots revival of devotion and belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. They believe that God wants to see “a movement of Catholics across the United States, healed, converted, formed, and unified by an encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist—and sent out in mission “for the life of the world.” These three years will culminate in the first National Eucharistic Congress in the United States in almost fifty years. Almost a hundred thousand Catholics will come together in Indianapolis for a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage toward the ‘source and summit’ of our Catholic faith.”

That “source and summit” is a quote taken from the documents of the Second Vatican Council. It refers to the celebration of the mass as the “source and summit” of the Church’s life. And when looked at from that perspective, the word revival is appropriate. We have just come through a bruising two-year pandemic with its lockdowns and disruptions of our lives. For months churches were closed, and then we labored under restrictions which turned the celebration of the mass into a meeting fraught with fear of contamination.

Despite the recent uptick in cases of Covid however, schools are open, tourism is growing, and the City’s economy is reviving. However, we were changed by the last two years. Many of us lost someone during the pandemic, or ourselves were gravely ill. We lost jobs, lost income, were evicted, moved, or somehow were displaced. Relationships were tested and some did not survive. And perhaps most importantly, we retreated.

We became afraid of one another and many of us still live with that fear. It is little wonder that so many people still avoid meals in restaurants and going to the theater. It is little wonder that many people still avoid Sunday mass. For what is mass if not a meal? What is it, if not a coming together with people the last two years have taught us to fear? That fear is understandable. And it is not limited to church.

And yet, we are being challenged to return to life: to interact with people, go to work, ride public transportation, and assemble again, in stores, at family celebrations and in the office. But it is difficult. We have been practicing social distancing to the point of isolation for the better part of two years, and that affects everything: including our practice of our faith.

Hence the challenge for a “Eucharistic Revival” from our bishops. First and foremost, it is a challenge to return to mass. But to do that, we also need to understand why. Why is the mass the “source and summit” of our Catholic faith? What should I get out of it? What do I need to give, so that the experience is a meaningful one for me? Over the next year we will return to this theme of the Eucharist. We will preach about it, I will write about it, but most importantly we will celebrate the Eucharist the way we always do here: with music and prayer, Scripture and preaching, and a welcome big enough for everyone.

Perhaps that is how we can begin this revival here: invite those who have been away to return, welcome those who are taking their first steps into this community to stay and follow the one who said to his friends, time and time again: fear not. “For I am with you unto the end of the world” (Mt 28:20). The Eucharist is the promise of that presence. May it give us courage and hope to continue the process of reviving our lives, our cities, our Church and our world.
